Imagine their surprise when the very first rainfall flooded their backyard six inches deep. The one reason that I love watching these shows is that you can see professionals at work. You can see how it’s supposed to be done.
That, and learning about bonehead mistakes I can look for, or even avoid doing myself!
Being from SoCal, I have no appreciation for thermal differences. I had no idea it could lead to mold. Luckily I'm not a builder!
Having said that - would have preferred to see the electrician using torque driver when doing the panel swap to make sure everything was at the correct torque.
What I love is that Holmes approved homes in Meaford are being demolished because of insufficient structure because he likes to bad mouth everyone on TV but in reality he is just a failed contractor a few times over. Thankfully for him his wife worked for a TV station. Much of what he says is right but notice he is the host of the shows and others tell him what needs to be done (and do the work).
also , seeing proff's not being shy about asking each other to confirm x things between different expertise areas to coordinate etc

crap loads of grass root 'do it right' or 'this is how do x' mixed in with cute kitty stuff for people to watch in handy ways ..realy hoppe the idiotic overlords of the tube wakes up and not continues down the same ''leets try turn this into old customer abusive cable tv'' crap like netflix started lean into

Imagine nowadays you have to call a duplex a house. Also let's remember something. Inspectors rely on word of mouth to get work. If they go over the top in their inspections and cost realtors sales they lose work. So the problem is they have to do that, I feel like inspectors should be part of a blind assignment pool and force realtors to use it. This allows inspectors to do their job.
But if they go over the top they can get a good reputation as inspectors for buyers. I know the inspector I am going to call when I want to buy a house, he generated a 45 page 'summery' report of issues. The full report had 80 pictures and was nearly 200 pages long.
I love like 5 seconds Mikes there he spots something that needs fixing.
Every episode basically has the same problems over and over again.
these home inspectors should watch all the episodes and they would immediately be able to do a much better job of what they are paid to do.
Nice thought, but you are assuming that they care. There have also been dozens of documented cases where the real estate agent collaborates with home inspectors. The real estate agents were giving kickbacks to "inspectors" to pass houses.
Aye right, the inspector sitting on their comfy sofa with a cup of tea while binge-watching one episode after the other... get real mate, these inspectors should be in a prison and not ruining people lives.

I would hire an electrician to look over the electrical. Not sure if they would do that. I would pay them their regular rate.🤔

I love watching Mike at work. I wonder if the Home Inspector really did their job or just scammed the couple. I am not professional but I could see all the problems. I am glad Mike and his crew finds the problems and fix them.
Do these home inspectors ever get sued?
Suing the inspector is fruitless. The best the homeowner can hope for is a refund of the service. There isn’t any further liability

A home inspector ignored the big patched bubble in the bathroom of the house my daughter bought. I brought it up and he said, I know. She needed a roof, a new bathroom and her chimney fixed.

They DID buy a fixer upper, starter home. They just didn't know it at the time.
Anyone else wondering how they're going to open the clothes dryer? Looks like it's going to hit the bifold door.
YUP! terrible placement of the washer and dryer, what if the homeowner wants to replace them almost no room to move anything anywhere, or even if they need service/repairs. If they opened up the basement they should've placed the electrical and water lines elsewhere. And those useless doors, just leave it open or put something more like an accordion door so it doesn't take up space when you open it.

Home inspectors do a perfunctory review of your property within a timed schedule. I have purchased 3 properties and the inspectors have ALL missed major flaws/problems on all 3 homes that cost me thousands later.
Good to know, but if that’s the case what would you suggest for individuals who really have no expertise and rely on professionals like this.
@@ACsPianoCorner get a better inspector than they did. We've purchased 2 properties and have had excellent inspections each time. Look at ratings, get recommendations from friends & family, don't just hire the first or cheapest person you find.
Great job EXCEPT the doors to the washer. That should have been a sliding door so you can go from washer right to sink. The way it looks you have to go out and then to sink. 😢❤
If you look at 41:35 - 41:40 it kind of seems like the dryer door might not even be able to open with the accordion doors in the way.

I wonder how these houses are doing 10-15 years later, be really interesting if they went back. I know spray foam, certaintly in the UK is not liked and you cant even get a morgage easily due to it.
I love this show too - but it is a bit unrealistic in that no certified home inspector will ever open up a wall or remove a ceiling. Sure, this show points out that a lot of home inspectors are either lazy or incompetent - your best bet would be never to use one recommended by your real estate agent and instead go research one on your own and make sure the one you use isn't beholding to the local real estate agents for work.
One issue I question is using gable vents and soffit vents with a ridge vent. It's redundant. Normally, we install rafter vents just beyond the top plate and insulate to the vents to allow proper airflow into the attic space, in conjunction with a vented soffit and a ridge vent system. By adding gable vents to the equation, the air won't draw through the soffits sufficiently. Air is like electricity in that it will take the path of least resistance. Gable vents don't need a ridge vent. I don't like the gable vent system for multiple reasons, but under certain circumstances, you have no choice.
If i were an inspector, id red flag that flimsy garage overhead shelf

When the house was sold why did no one check with the city to see what kind of permits had been pulled for the house? The basement renovation looks DI as if a previous homeowner did the work.
one reason to not pull permits is to keep the government from seeing any improvements you have done so they can raise your property taxes.

Horizontal breaker panels are A NO-NO.... *in USA.
Because of the old adage ... up is on ... down is off. >This means ONLY one 'side' (the bottom) of the available breaker slots can be used.

Why didn't he say anything about the location of the windows in the basement. Shouldn't it be no higher than 44 inches from the floor and the opening should be a minimum of 20" wide by 24" in height for egress. If so then the 2 windows are incorrect. Just wondering what if they convert it to a living / bedroom space.
Our Minnesota code required fire code drywall under the stair stringers. Good for egress and also the firemen.
i sure love a nice warm carpet..
but if i have to chose between no carpet and hard floor... or nailed down 'built' in carpet.. i pick chilled hard floors and keep my warm socks and hot coca brew near anyday instead :/ nailed down/built in carpet is both a nightmare to keep clean and an even worse nightmare as far i care for any repairs or moisture/infestation etc risks
I believe people doing home inspections should have a minimum three to five years in the trades before becoming a home inspector so they know what they're talking about and looking for and I firmly believe the same goes for people that do code inspections cuz there's a lot of inspectors out there that don't know what a hammer is doing inspections.
Maybe have classes and have them pass them before they can be a certified inspector.

Never worry and do not fear Mr. Holmes is there to inspect your house right.Then make it right the way it should have been done the first time.
I had a cousin buy a house that was empty for a while and hire an inspector to inspect it. He was horrible. They actually sued him because the water pipes inside was busted where he didn't check them. The owner had the valves shut off in two of the bathrooms and kitchen.
PS, the owner was not trying to pull anything over on any one he just shut them off and didn't drain the pipes thinking that would keep the from busting
I wish I knew all I have learned from these episodes when I owned my old 4-square beauty. With age comes much wisdom.
I wonder if the home inspector ever watched the episode of the house that they inspected.
I'd have to think someone THAT bad at their job is so confident in their skills they'd never watch a show like this. Or if they did, they'd just argue with every finding, calling Mike a hack.
Lesson learned on home inspections. Even going with the inspector, the couple was completely failed by the licensed inspector. Someone should have their license revoked.
Finished basements are just a bad idea. All they do is cover up sources of water leaks, HVAC issues, electrical issues and floor drains. Back when I was growing up in the 60s nobody had finished basements because back then people were smart enough to know they were a bad idea.
Why does Canada plumbing code still require house traps? And it looks like they used ABS glue for the PVC joints? in USA PVC glue is clear or blue
The more of these shows I see, I think that the inspectors were in with the sellers. Normally we call that fraud. Hopefully the rules have changed in Canada.
Why don't the workers cover their heads when they're doing all of that dusty work. They do when they're removing asbestos and stuff like that. But they don't when they're cutting and putting up all of that drywall. Even the ladies don't cover their hair. That grainy stuff can cut strands of hair just as sand does. I was just wondering.

Ontario doesnt use a national plumbing code.. it has its own provincial building code. Building traps aren't installed anymore but many houses were built back when they were used, and thats why you see them here. Also, ABS glue is for ABS, and PVC has its own designated cement. The 2" drain going into 1-1/2" isnt going to cause a flood but its against code regardless.. so its a problem unless youre a hack and dont care to follow rules. /shrug

Not to shame the owners, but all people should know, water from the sky need a place to go and unless you pump it, it will go to the lowest point... How could that come as a surprice?

The thing that sucks about this episode is (maybe it’s different in Canada) but the work being done is in a townhouse or condo and usually the HOA for places like that are tough to work with.

@6:08: This is a bit of Mike's melodrama. The code requirement for laundry drain used to be 1.5". I get that you can't drop from 2 to 1.5", but acting like that's going to cause a flood is pure melodrama.

Brit here, the more I watch these programmes, the more annoyed I get with the situation regarding "Inspectors" Almost every programme is due to faults undiscovered by the supposed "inspection" This just goes to show the total lack of governmental backup for house buyers. Why aren't "Inspectors" on a recognised national list, with a National Certificate and Qualifications listed? Why is everything left to the private sector rip off boys? A free for all for "jack the lads" con artists. Its the most anybody spends in their life and to be left to just a bunch of thieves is outrageous. Its no wonder Mike and his crew are in such demand.

i have watched so many of your videos and a home inspector is useless, as a home owner looking for an other home i need to equip myself and study a lot before i take my kids and myself to our other home ... scary as F**k !

1) nobody runs their car in their garage anymore
2) nobody backs their car into their garage anymore
3) none of these tiny Canadian garages are big enough to put a car
