The beginning of this video explains perfectly what I loved about 40k when I started playing. The great stories that came out of those games of 2nd edition were what made it so fun. Same with original Warhammer Quest. The newer games just don't seem to have that.
The fact the game was so damn broken and so stupidly OP in some small things make it definitely a gentleman's/gentlelady's game: you are allowed to play stupid things, but you are not allowed to be an absolute WAAC idiot.
Don't you ever stop restoring those old figures to their former glory!! I could watch on for hours listening to you while you breath second life into those ebay rescues. Good job, Miguel. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Cinematic moments are what set 40k apart from every other game. Trimming the crunch meant trimming the flavour, removing a lot of potential cinematic moments. That’s why I have played a combined 10 games of 40k in editions 7, 8 and 9. I like to return to 5th edition once or twice per year. Thank you for sharing!
My feelings exactl: holding your breath rolling all those armour penetration values, sustained dice, tables, scattering templates... So many things happened that you had barely any control over them beyond making decisions on where to move your attention to! It felt quite more "real" and similar to how destiny and life do things sometimes.
2nd edition is still my favorite edition of 40k by a very long shot. Everything about those rules is just so metal. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, fellow grognard.
I really love this project! Second edition is, by far, the best edition of 40K! I can't wait to see more videos of you painting the forces of chaos and maybe playing one or two games with it. Please don't stop here.
Don’t know if I can love this video more, but all of this is super awesome. Everything you’ve said about earlier editions really captures what made them so special, and the game these days can feel less exciting than it used to back in the days when the rules were super crunchy. Chaos space marines were my first army so seeing your restoration on this army brings back a lot of great memories.
I am very happy to see that you had some flashbacks with this video :). It is the same with other games: I used to play D&D, and although I enjoyed 5th edition, I much prefer the clunkiness of aD&D 2e. Not sure why. Same with this. Once you get used to the quirks and nonsense, knowing how to play a crunchy game becomes a ritual of sorts.
Thanks! It isn't intended, just that my sculpting skills are limited and might ressemble those of the guys who started doing this for a living in the 80s :)
I totally get it, I've literally this past weekend pulled out some Space Wolves I converted about 10 years ago from a drawer and made a squad from bits, plus found a landraider I'd part built. I'm not sure many of the minis I've kitbashed together are game legal but I'm having a whale of a time again. So you keep doing that thing you're doing as you do it so well!!!
And because the armies are smaller, you probably are in the process of having a whole army ready in a couple of months. Tell me if this isn't such a great motivator! Instead of spending months getting minis ready, you could have a playable force in weeks!
2nd edition 40k, space hulk, heroquest, advanced heroquest thats all im really intrested in. Zero intrest in anything else. IMO the 80s to mid 90s models have such a charm and character that i cant get enough of. Absolutely love painting those minis.
Wow your into space crusade as well!! Gonna be checking out all your vids! Just saw your dreadnought! Awesome job! You have inspired me to attempt that box art version as well! I'm lucky enough to have four. :-) two I have painted but really wanted to try doing one with flames. Cheers mate .
There is a whole playlist as I go from restoring it to painting each mini in the game: Space Crusade: ruclips.net/p/PLsmgNXe0eIaAly0pwkQLR49IlQzuxrPmq Enjoy!
I am chaos player that started with 2nd ed. To me 2nd is the best edition, mostly because of all the fun I had back then. Still love my metal dreadnoughts.
Imagine playing it now, with all the skills you have got on painting and modelling, plus a cool looking table and the maturity to try to play it for fun and not for ego! That is my goal!
This reminds me a lot of good things. A younger me reading about 40k in white dwarfs, and more recently reading and enjoying all your photo logs in Marcus Beli... your high elf army was a beauty to see. Also your restorations almost convince me to paint an army and go to Piñera, even if I never played warhammer before 😅
I need to start running those tournaments again, I swear! We have so much fun every time we do have one going, it is a pity I don't do it, but, since GW killed WHFB and Covid happened, it became more difficult to find the motivation and the players to do one. Thanks for the reminiscing of the good ol' days of MB. Qué recuerdos. Igual hago un video de mis elfos este verano que vuelvo a casa!
That dreadnought thunderhammer arm... Took me 3 years to finally find one a few weeks ago. I rescue models from Ebay a lot too! You are going a few steps further though. That must have been a shitton of work.
@@rushthewash Maybe, but I don't know much about that stuff. I want everything to be original and my pile is big enough to take my time searching for bits.
I know exactly how you feel like, but I think we are going to end up relying more and more on 3d printing for those old-style-looking pieces: the good news is that we are not alone on this nostalgia trip and there are many many talented people out there willing to put the time and effort to create the things we love. Why is this so? I don't know: I am just very glad there are maniacs like ourselves feeding our old school cravings! :) Worth trying to find some of that cool stuff online! I understand drilling barrels... but lascannons should have a lense on the end not a hole? that's just one little nit-pick I have, I still love what you're doin with the restoration though.
Hi Miguel, I love your channel man! :) Do you plan to run a video series on building and painting an army for the Warhammer the Old World? That would be awesome!
@@rushthewash I soak stuff in warm soapy water for about 30 minutes, then put it in a bag, and put it in the freezer overnight. 2nd edition, the best edition. Only thing I disliked was sustained fire dice and characters being way OP. We changed some rules a little. Armour saves before wound rolls, sustained rolls before hit rolls, for example you roll 3 on your sustained dive then rolled all 3 to hit dice so you might only get 2 hits for example, seemed to iron things out a bit for us.
Those are very good tweaks. How do you work out sustained fire vs different cover miniatures? Roll each hit according to the cover? This "armour before wounds" is something I remember discussed quite often in old forums for WHFB. Why was it done this way, I am not sure...
