BC wildfires: How did the Kelowna fire spread so quickly?

  • A state of emergency has been declared in Kelowna, B.C., over a small wildfire near the city exploding in size, putting thousands of people at risk and triggering mass evacuation orders and alerts.
    Farah Nasser explains how the situation spiraled out of control so quickly, then speaks with West Kelowna Fire and Rescue Chief Jason Brolund about the long night for emergency crews battling flames.
    "Awe-inspiring" and "gut-wrenching" were words Chief Brolund used when describing what he saw and how the fires behaved when surveying the initial damage in Kelowna.

    I have relatives who live in the Okanagan, I haven't heard anything from my parents or other relatives if they've been evacuated or how close the fires are to them. But I really, really hope they and everyone else will be okay. This is just awful.

      I live in Vernon and my front yard is full of ash. It’s so thick. The winds are absolutely crazy. It’s apocalyptic here. The sky is red and the sun the colour of blood, when you can see it. It’s raining fire in Kelowna. We have had no rain in 6 months. March we had highs of 32C. . Last week we were in the high 30’s and low 40’s . The trees in Vernon that are watered by the city are brown like fall. They crumble when you touch the leaves. We had historical dry lighting this year, it’s terrifying. So many on evacuation. It would help if the tourists went home but many aren’t. They are actually driving into the evacuation zones just to get video. It’s disgusting. I live at the head of the lake and I’m ready to go. We are literally surrounded by fires. It’s terrifying to say the least.

    If people are ORDERED to get out of harm's way and they still stay there, I do not see how it is mandatory to put other people in grave risk to try to rescue them still. They chose to stay? Let them deal with it themselves.

    Ponderosa pine. Douglas fir. Each year these trees lose some of their needles. Typically low ground fires will burn up these layers. The bark on the trees is thick and protects the tree. After years of suppressing natural fires the layers of shed and debris has grown. People built homes, towns and cities in these forests. The resulting affect is higher risk of fire related disasters and the potential for lose of life.

    • @garionporter5961
      @garionporter5961 Год назад

      yes/no - an area could actually go many many years without fire naturally. I would assume they only let burn what is not a danger to people/property...on a scale assessment (like triage: worst in need first) But there is some merit to what you are saying - too much unnatural suppression can create a bigger danger down the road. I don't think thats what we see here though - the whole atlantic side of NA is dry dry dry...add some wind... O.o

    • @timh1187
      @timh1187 Год назад +1

      When you need to start a fire you literally walk underneath one of these trees and you can scoop up a 12 inch thick bushel of pine needles that will ignite better than matches. People don’t seem to understand forest fires are a natural occurrence that helps regenerate a healthy eco system in the forest. It sucks that so many people will be affected but watch how beautiful and green things will turn over the next couple years.

Those trees are basically dry tinder because of how much water they lose from the hot dry summers we have now. They know it's going to happen before we do...For example I've noticed the increase in pine beetles in Ontario after the fires in Quebec.
      Actually before we got here wildfires were pretty common place in the rain forests of BC. It's nature's way of clearing out dead plant matter to allow room for new healthy plants to grow and also adds nitrates to the soil.
      Usually they do controlled burning to initiate the fires in a less destructive way before they get unpredictable and out of hand like we're seeing now...I suspect liberal government shinaniganz.
