  • I am not an outlaw trucker!!!!! Thats what we are going to talk about today. We are traveling from Sioux City Ia to Topeka Ks and St Joe MO. Along our travels we find a quiet spot to talk about Electronic Log Books Vs Paper Log Books. Then finish our day feeling great. Thank you for watching.

    I totally agree shipping and receiving should be held accountable for loss of hours, when you set at a dock for Five hours to unload two pallets it’s time to hold them accountable for your suffering and I do mean suffering

    You Sir, are speaking the truth. People drive when they are sleepy with electronic logs. If fact, I believe there should be no logs at all. There will always be a few that will make poor judgement but the vast majority of us will stay safe. These rules cause more accidents than they prevent. Great video.

      These laws were put in place because fatigued drivers could kill people. There is a difference between a fully loaded semi truck and passenger car.

    I'm not a outlaw but I'm realistic like you I still do paper logs and do what I need to complete the day. The crazy running is over but I'm not stopping 30 miles from home

    In my opinion paper logs are safer. You can nap when you want to nap. Etc.

      Totally agree. You still have to match fuel stops and tolls and such. ELD for the driver mills so they can get them on the road quicker. LOL

      Most def. and your point goes back even further before the HOS rule changes, you didn't have to push or pull logs, for that purpose anyway. Your clock didn't start and stay on sleep could be broke up without wrecking your day.

    I had a level 2 inspection the other day in Oklahoma with my paper log. Lady had zero problem with it actually said I was writing a little bit to much information down on it every time I stopped. lol

    You said it best when you said you were a "realistic driver." That's how I feel about it too. I drove back before the hours of service change, when we could drive 10 hrs before having to take 8 hrs off...When my 10 hrs of driving came, I pulled off because it was the rule although i still felt fresh and could keep going. Now, I'm spending 8 hrs in the truckstop, not able to sleep because I'm still "fresh." My 8 hrs of "rest" are now up and it's time to hit the road...now, I'm too tired to drive, but I have to drive because I just wasted 8 hrs trying to rest in a truckstop when I could have been down the road had the government let me decide on my own when I was tired or not. These people are making rules from "science" and have no clue what it's actually like on the road.

    Yeah, I personally think paper logs are the way to go. I mean, I understand that drivers aren't exactly supposed to be driving all day long, but it's realistic trucking if you stop to rest when you know you need to, not when the ELD dictates it.

    Back in the day we’d run 2 comic books if not more. The industry has changed so much and I believe not in a good way in many ways. I also run paper logs.

    When I ran ELD company would tell me to slow down when I kept going 5 over. They’d call me to ask if I broke down if my 30 minutes break went couple minutes over. I was happy when I got a older truck to drive with paper logs. For me 10 hour sleep break was to much

    You’re realistic and logical and that’s how it should be. My dad is on his 55th year of trucking and he’s doing well at 75! So, he’s pro paper logbooks. He’s home every day now so he’s put in enough time. Plus knowing your limits is essential. I’m starting with my new company tomorrow but I have not been out since 2017 (personal and family life) (skin cancer and new grandchildren)it’s all good!

    It’s nice to watch you have a personal relationship with First Class I did the same and it’s important to take care each other but if you take care of her she will want to keep running her BEST. Didn’t know other drivers considered each truck has their own personality. It’s home away from home. When it’s time to give her up you will want her to have the best.

    Oh boy - this is a loaded video! I liked paper logs, you were flexible to the things that were happening around you. But I did sign on with one company and I remember being told "if you cant give a 1000 miles a day, I don't need you" with paper. There were good and bad companies in days gone by with paper but we're not going to talk about that.
    I was going to comment about the 86' Freightliner - the salad days of truck evolution. The T600 was new for 86' and the 377 for 87' all set back axles, the FLC120 being the only truck with a chrome bumper and still looked good, can't wait for the video!

    Either way I don’t stop unless I have too and I normally run about 5 over the speed limit and just pound some ground. That’s how I was raised and taught and that’s what I like to do.

    I said this before but I will say it again I love the sound of your truck. I like how you ease through the gears. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like to hear more of the truck as you go up through the gears.

    I remember the 20 hour days, and 100 hour weeks. That was when I was young lol. Too old for that now. I like the paper logs for special situations, like coming home, and an e-log would require a 10hour break 100 miles from the house LOL. Or about that far to a shipper and you just want to get it done before you go to bed. But I do like the E-logs for the convenience of it does it all for me, and my companies can’t push farther than what that says. Got my CDL in 2000, I’ve done both, and see good and bad of both.

    Just found your channel last week and I'm really lovin it! I'm currently taking a class to get my CDL so I have been watching some vids when I came across yours. You have a new fan...you are driving my all time favorite truck and you have to same breed of dog I have been wanting for a long time also. Creepy or what? LoL

    With the new "split sleeper" rules you can take a long break at the shipper and then run into the night. That may get me home a few times but I'd rather have the ability to run 11 after taking an 8 hour break so, like you said, I don't have to run my ass off to get to the customer at the right time and I don't have to keep extending the work day.

    Partner I've done the electronic log and you ain't missing anything. I've done paper logs and run the outlaw life. Honestly sitting back enjoying your job and lifestyle is alot better and Honestly you ain't making anything more either way. I'll get there when I get there

    You are not an outlaw don't even think that Kurt. When I drove with my late Richard we had to do the paper logs and they worked out just fine and dandy. I just hated writing all that info down lol all the roads we took and where we stopped we had to have out maps handy indeed. back then I could tell you every road we were on, not today but I do know a lot of the interstates to this day. last time I was behind a semi steering wheel was back in 2002. but my late Richard drove till 2007 he retired. Love all your videos you bring up great points to the trucking world all true indeed!! I've lived the life so I know a lot myself. You stay safe also!!

    Been out here 42 years, I still run 170 plus k miles a year as company driver, ( pneumatic food grade) e logs don’t bother me one bit , but I get your point of view completely,👍

    Hey mr Schmidt, I see both sides of running paper vs E-log. I think that it really comes down to each individual drivers preferences as to what they use. But this is becoming harder as both Canadian and us governments are pushing E-Log to be law. Personally I like my E-log as I am not that great in math and I know that I won’t get any violations due to incorrect math LOL. The down sides to Elog is that it gives a lot of companies more power and they can then tell you how to drive their trucks and if u don’t drive the way they want you to then simply let you go. In the truck that I drive we have a tablet E log called Isaac and it basically does our Elog and it also has a coach built into that basically tells the driver that he is accelerating to hard or turning to hard or even braking to hard. All this info is sent back to our admin in the office. I find this a little bit over board as each individual has different skills and abilities. And different driving styles. Like myself I learned on a 13 speed and using my jake to slow down combined with down shifting and now driving an auto where I basically have to use the brakes makes me feel uncomfortable. The nice thing with paper logs is that there is more flexibility and being able to stop and take that nap that u may need as to an Elog may not allow it. Your advice of not over using ur mirrors and not allowing people make me feel pressured to drive faster has really hit home with me. As I have been dealing with this lately. I am looking into becoming an o/o and my truck I’m planning to buy is an int. Lt with 18 speed stick. As for the logs and which is better they both have there pros and cons. Stay safe and stay healthy.

    Your 100 percent correct. The realistic trucking is the right answer. Racing the clock is wrong and as we have seen its dangerous just look at racing in truck stops construction zones etc. Realistic trucking is alot more safer thats how I run and have more than enough time .it's Ole skool with pride.     I want to buy an older W900 and operate under my own authority and run paper logs. I have had bad experiences with the newer trucks and all the emissions; more electronics, more things to go bad, more time sitting waiting for repairs--once sat in Miami for 2 weeks waiting on a sensor to arrive. Not that I really minded cause of breakdown and per diem pay... spent a lot of time at the beach and lounging in the hotel that the company paid for. I have had some decent experience with elogs and it does allow you to tell the company off because they can't push you to mess with the paper logs... I remember my dad running with a small company and having 3 log books and running hard; 6,000+ miles a week. He loved switching to a bigger company that had elogs as it was far more relaxed and he could actually take his breaks.
    I hated getting to a shipper and sitting for 4 hours in line for an open dock and then 4 hours as they took their time unloading you and then wouldn't let you park overnight and the desk jockey saying I got hours because of a split break and I needed to start going... look man, I just drove 6 hours to get to the shipper and then sat 8 hours waiting. I'm tired and I need to sleep--yeah I got a nap here and there but the truck shaking every 45 minutes or so as the forklift came in and out woke me up so I didn't get a restful sleep. The worst was the places that wouldn't allow you to be in your truck because of safety issues so you had to sit on a metal folding chair in a metal cage by the docks so you didn't wander around the factory. Union places were the worst for that with all their union mandated breaks... easily spend 8-10 hours at a shipper/receiver just waiting around. Non-union places would usually have me in and out in 2-3 hours.
    But operating under my own authority using load boards or have my wife be my dispatcher I will be the one deciding how hard and where I run.

    WARNING This post is long. This was what i sent on when FMCSA was wanting feedback on possible changes to HOS. I believe worth reading.
    To whom it may concern,
    Just want to put my two cents in on comments for HOS adjustments. I started driving in the early seventy's (chauffeur license) and old HOS. Took a break in early ninety's then came back to the industry in 2012. ( Drove part time during break) WOW what a change the HOS made in how one would go through their day!! Under old HOS a driver could take a rest break, stop and have a cup of Joe with a friend or or just stop for no particular reason any time they wanted.
    Drivers had no problems finding parking spaces (my experience) any time of day at truck stops all because when the driver stopped for the above reasons the clock could stopped. Looking back it just seemed the pace was more relaxed. Yes there were times that appointments needed to be made or there was the driver that just had to go but overall more relaxed.
    Now all driving has been since new(2003) HOS were brought in to affect, has come down to BEAT THE CLOCK!!! SAFE???
    Under new HOS truck stops are full at night and all but abandoned during the day. Old HOS truck stops were (seemed) about on even keel as far as parking
    Yes there were less trucks then but the we're less truck stops then also. Personal experience from working graveyard shift at New Point IN truck stop. Back then (72-73) pump jockeys would park some trucks for some drivers. Never had a problem finding parking.
    Now there is no more stopping for a cup of Joe with a friend you may meet on the road.....got to go, running out of time. SAFER??
    If by chance you didn't get a good night's sleep, tough... got to go! Old HOS a driver could take a short nap and still get freight there same day or maybe a little late. New HOS it will be a day late and the driver will still be rushed trying to make up time. SAFER???
    Shipper /receiver screw you around? Old HOS hit the bunk or lay back off duty and wait to be called in. (Depending on situation) New HOS clock is ticking. Another day screwed up, can't make next pick up or appointment. rush try to makeup time SAFER??
    All I hear is plan your trip better. Well. ....if you can tell me how to plan for traffic accidents, road construction, traffic jams, trouble at shipper /receiver pop up weather events, I would be willing to listen.
    THIS IS NOT AN OFFICE JOB!!
    To me since the new HOS were implemented it is what "the powers that be" seem to want to make it.
    It all comes down to more flexibility. Even doing away with the mandatory WTB (wasted time break) and allowing for two or more breaks at random times with clock stopped then start up again will not solve problems. You still will be trying to BEAT THE CLOCK. SAFER??
    Old HOS a driver could have several sleeper periods (if I Remember correctly 2hr minimum) to stretch hours and miss traffic and still be able to make delivery instead of having 10hrs continuous and throwing timing off
    Go back to old hrs of service rule. You can still have 11/14 but have them in 24 hr period. No more than 11 or 14 in any 24hr slice of time. With today's technology times can be tracked easier than they could back in the days of paper logs
    Just a suggestion and this not meaning to be sarcastic.
    Run your office like a truck driver with current rules. Eight hour day at office with 1hr travel per day. Take into account the report that someone gave to you last minute that must be turned in at days end when you want to take a break with a coworker or you are a little sleepy during the day. "Just have to plan your day better".
    Be sure to count travel time back and forth to office and any work you may take home with you or meetings you may have beyond office hours Remember, if you exceed 9 hrs you can't drive except to the first safe place to sleep/stop. Such as hotel you pay for even if only a mile from your home.
    I know this comes off as sounding crazy or sarcastic but this is what most (my opinion) truck drivers go through every day.
    My suggestion is go back to how old HOS were calculated and then you will have flexibility.

    I hate the ELD. Just as pointed out, STOP for lunch, STOP wash the truck, STOP and take a nap. ELD.....run, run, run. When that clock starts its go time. I run like you said 65 and at the end thats where I make it, frustrating about of days. Sure is. Enjoy the video.

    I’ve only watched a few of your videos, but as far as I can tell you don’t seem to be a "Complainer" unlike a lot of drivers out there. I really appreciate the content being less dramatic and over hyped. More truckers need to be calm, collected, stop rushing and have pride in what we do, and also take some time to enjoy the little things. That being said keep up the good vlogs.

    I know of guys that were driving back before e logs even came out and they were driving many days not stop (granted drugs were involved) but they said they had multiple paper logs.... one for DOT/troopers, one for the pay check.
    Like you said electronic has helped some and hurt some..... seen guys get their hand slapped because elog was having issues. Seen it let drivers be able to drive realistic hours.
    Like you said, gotta know you’re limits...... mine is when the sun is coming up..... really really drains me.

    I've been in retail delivery trucking for 23 years at only 2 employers....I taught myself on paper logs and never had a problem.
    Did I fudge a little? Sure. Retail delivery on a dedicated out of state route is a different animal than OTR A to B ship/receive....I made it work to get me home then out again....I loved that job...for 10 years....alot of physical work, but only worked 14 days per month!
    That job ended eventually, and a couple days later, I ended up in my current job....almost 13 years now.
    ELD ruined the job I do now, and, the company turned the trucks down to 62 from 68 mph! Talk about self-defeating!
    They eventually got us up to 65 mph, but geez louise.....I can't believe I still work there.....taking a hotel room with only 30 minutes short for the day?
    It's miserable....made trucking suck for alot of drivers, and now, conditions are more dangerous for everyone!

    I've been off the road since 06 and if I were to go back I'd buy a pre 99 truck (last truck I drove was a 93 FLD, the oldest in the fleet and STILL outran the "new" Volvos they had..

    I agree over 100%!!! I haven't driven in twenty years (got tired of speed dispatchers) I'm not sure I even like the hours of service today
    To me It seems to me both only benefit the company. (More drive time & more control over the driver.) If I want or need to stop for a soda or take a pee break I'm going to do it...
    I'm not going to let some device tell me to keep going. (!!!!!!!! NOT SAFE , NOT HEALTHY !!!!!!!)
    I was for the twelve on twelve off hours. If done right a driver could be relaxed and not stressed to the limit. (Twelve hour on twelve hours off in twenty four hours. With a minimum of four hours sleeper time) A driver would have time to eat, shower, destress and then get a good night's rest.
    But as you said there will always be the ones that abuse the system.

    Hi I drive a company truck with a electric log I work Monday through Friday I don't let my log run me I work at my own pace and at the end of my day sometimes I run over 600 miles and other times I may only run 300 mile but I'm still home every weekend and every holiday and still make 6 figures plus full benefits . So I have no problem with the electronic logs been on it since 2001 with the same company.

    G'day Kurt, when you mentioned camera's what type of camera do you mean?, down here we have Point to Point that photographs trucks as they pass under them, spread apart on every highway and your travelling time is averaged out. Is this the same type of camera you mean?. I run E Log's on my trucks plus Fleetcom's to protect the driver's incase of mishap's.

      Yes we have the same thing in certain states, but we have an insane amount of interstate cameras that just show traffic flow and accidents.

    My last job before hanging up the keys was the first MN company to install ELD s in their tractors. Being an older driver was fun to learn but was not excited. They are OK I guess.

      Our safety manager brings down the wrath of God if we go over our hours by one minute using ELD

      Exactly the HOS unable to stop after starting them is the problem. Give us timeouts to stop the clock or more hours for specific/special circumstances during our work schedule.
      Personal Conveyance is not the answer!!

    I have mixed feelings about elogs. On the one hand, they are easy. Park up, post trip, change lines, done. No more "Where the heck am I?", wondering where my ruler is, pulling staples...uh, I mean ensuring my logs were correct. The biggest issue I have with them is they are zero tolerance. Can't find a parking spot, feeling good and want to drive for 8:30, accidentally go to fast in the yard and drop onto the drive line at 9:55? You're screwed. They need to have a little give for drivers to work with.
    On another note: You have your own authority, right? Do you book your loads through companies you already have a relationship with or through brokers? Just wondering how your business model works. Thanks, enjoying the videos and getting to see a little of the Iowa I miss. WLBS Ken

      Loads out are 95% dedicated with business around home. Coming home from any further then 1,000 miles is usually broker loads. Yes on the authority part. And thank you.

    3 decade truck driver here and I think that both paper and electronic logs suck. I'm a local regional driver thats home every day and only work about 8 to 10 hrs a day and as far as im concerned the less I need to be in that truck the better so why should I have to tell everyone about my day because Im surly not going to be wanting to work any longer than I have to that's for sure. Maybe if this industry actually paid us for everything that we did in our daily work then people wouldn't have to do stupid things to make a living in this business and then not have to have a need for everyone to baby sit us as we work. Love the videos keep up the good work and love the sound of that big Kitty purring down the road I sure miss my cat engine.

    Papers log is better than ELD because we can rest if we get sleepy in the road, the ELD is worst for owner operators because i got stuck in the shipper for 7 1/2 hours and the ELD eat all my driving times and cannot drive anymore.

    I found Elogs to be very efficient. What I imagine would be best is, like a train that doesn't have much traffic to deal with, trucks should have their own roads for hauling commerce. Completely separated from cars. I don't think that trucks and cars have any business being near each other.
    To go with your tight spaces video, I had a dock I needed to get into that wasn't happening. After waiting for the other truck to leave I sat in the dock for 45 minutes for two pallets just to tell me that they don;t have the other half. Then, I went to pilot to shut down. Wasted over half a day.
    I do appreciate that I wasn't forced to run an obscene amount of hours, but I feel as though HOS needs a serious overhaul and shippers need to be held into account for delaying a driver. For example, I am of the opinion that if a driver gets into a wreck because the shipper decided to take their sweet time, they should also be held accountable. That is my opinion only you guys may disagree.

    I now prefer the ELD over the paper log. This is coming from a guy who started trucking in 94.
    I'm not going to try to change your mind.

    I'm just starting back after more than ten years off the road. I'm going with Swift and going to be running an e-log. I have serious doubts as to whether I will even get two thousand a week.

    35 years on the road. ELD is a learning curve, like anything else. You can still be flexible with an ELD. I'll say that a friend of mine was kinda thankful. Being a company man, there were more then a few 20hr days that are a fable of the past. "One more run" took allot of years off drivers heath and family. ELD came about because of bad company's.. anyone who's been around for 15 years or so knows exactly who I'm are talking about.
    ELD is not so much a concern as the medical is starting to be. They keep tightening up the requirements. I fly also, and it might surprise everyone that the medical requirements for CDL are leaps and bounds more restrictive then it is to be a pilot. How nutz is that?!? Let me put it to you this way.. you "big" guys are in a world of hurt, as they lowered the BMI. If your over your BMI, your going to need more exams that's going to put you down for weeks.
