I really like your take on geometry. It feels like manufacturers (and many cycling journalists) are pushing everyone towards super-slack, super-long bikes that don't make sense for many riders, especially those of us on the East Coast.
I agree. Most bike companies will say I should be a large, but I feel more comfortable on a medium. I have ridden a large but never really like it or being so stretched out.
@@TeddyParker no one listens when I tell them this. If you need the aggressive numbers for the trails you ride go ahead. But mf's out there being 5'6" on a large with a 480 reach is genuinely insane.
Interestingly, as a tall person I love the way geo is going, I just think manufacturers need to add a larger size or a smaller size or both to just fill in the gap, because the slack is nice, but only when the reach and stand over are properly fitting to the rider
Atherton bikes offer custom fit for like $100 extra, apart from the ~20 sizes they already have. May not be a very economical business idea but it’s the best for the riders

It is a HUGE eye opener when you ride a bike built just for you. Many of the people worried about trendy Geo would get shut up pretty fast when they first try a bike REALLY fit to them.
I bought a gravel bike from Sage. We used dimensions that I got from a fitter. Dave was a blast to work with. When I got it all put together this summer I was blown away on how comfortable the bike felt, especially for long rides. I am now a total believer that getting a bike fit and getting a custom frame is the way to go, but wholly cow was that an expensive way to go. Why would you wish Merry Christmas to someone who is Jewish? If the name Seth didn't give it away, if him specifically mentioning both Hanukkah and Christmas in the video didn't give it away, nor his looks, I'm not sure what would. When in doubt, happy holidays is best.

Custom sized bikes are the way to go once you work up the nerve to spend that amount of money. Cannot wait to get my Neuhaus Metalworks Humgingbird in the spring. Hardtails are so much fun. Enjoy the bike.
The bike looks incredible. So happy to see a small business get the widespread publicity they so clearly deserve, even more so a bike manufacturer. They have to be almost as stoked as you are!
Thank you for the kind words. Yes, we are stoked beyond words. It was a pleasure to work with Seth as he is truly as genuine in person as he is in the videos.
I went to 165mm cranks this year as well and really like them. Helped with my occasional knee pain along with slightly improved balance/stability, tech climbing, and acceleration have all been my experience. Might even try 160mm or 155mm...
When I first started watching this channel Seth was teaching me to hone my bunny hop and wheelie drop skills. He was hitting little dirt jump loops and some occasional street riding in South Florida. Now the channel is based in one of the MTB meccas and is responsible for the construction of a public bike park. It serves as a desirable showcase and proving ground for new products and brands. All the result of lots of creativity and hard work. Keep ripping and sharing it all with us, what a great way to while away the hours until we can all be on the trails
Sweet ride. Love the paint scheme with the personal touches. When you find or build something that fits like a glove the confidence it gives you is intoxicating and dangerous
I'm a similar height to Seth. I recently went from a reach of 450mm down to 435mm and loved the change. I ride janky trails on the North Shore so I like slacker HTAs (I ride 63). But with the reduced reach, my bikes came to life. I like the stability of the slacker HTA combined with the mobility from the shorter reach. I also went from 165mm to 155mm cranks. LOVE LOVE LOVE the shorter cranks. I'm not sure why we've been so stuck on 170s for so long. I'm telling you, if you're in that 5'7/5'8 height range, and liked going to 165, don't shy away from trying 155! Less pedal strikes, easier on the knees on the climbs, and better foot position on the downs (for people in that height range). One formula to try, is take your inseam in mm (with bike shoes on) and multiple by 0.197 to get your crank length.
if you're comfortable sharing, it'd be very interesting to see your body measurements to line up to how this bike fits you (height, armspan, inseam, etc.). really excellent explanation of how geometry depends on all parts of the bike and body. also would be interesting to see you get a professional "fit" from a road bike expert, they've been doing these calculations (as best as they can) for a long time!
i told myself at the beggining of the video that Seth was gonna realize he's been riding the wrong size bike his whole life lol. that is a beautiful bike, and i cant wait to see ti featured more. great work Sage!
Great Bike Seth. Nice to see someone else going all out on a Hardtail. Looks like you’re going to be having huge fun on that bike. I’ve a similar spec’d HT with the Berd spokes. What a different those wheels make !!! Enjoy !!!
Evans MTB Saga was complaining that you spent so much on this bike. I feel like if you enjoy mountain biking and you want a really good bike and you dont car about the price you should do it.
For me a custom bike would solve a whole other set of issues. I'm a mountain biker at heart, but since there are very few good challenging trails within reach for me, I mostly ride and enjoy paved paths now with some light unpaved sections, so I just want an all-road bike (between road and gravel) with MTB inspired characteristics. Basically this means I want a longer and slightly (not too much) slacker road bike for smoother cornering at speed, better control and better comfort. I think I should start saving up for a custom geo all-road bike..
I felt this way when I discovered gravel bikes. While I thoroughly appreciate feeling the need for speed, I also thoroughly enjoy going off-road. So I'm mentally preparing for a future custom Ti soft tail gravel bike with adjustable drop outs for touring. Lotsa luck with your dream bike!
As a 5'2" man, THANK YOU! I highly recommend looking into Lee McCormack (Lee Likes Bikes) "rider area distance" and his other work on bike fit. He's done a ton of work on it, and makes a very good case that almost all people ride bikes that are too big for them these days.
Makes a very good case? Bud, that’s easy…people are different sizes and bikes come in like 3…not difficult knowing that things mass produced aren’t custom fit. I’ll blow your mind some more. “Fitted” hats are just elastic stretchable hats and aren’t custom fit. I know, mind blown right?
YES!!! Just asked Seth to watch those episodes of “Joy of Bike” and the R.A.D measuring system to see how close Seth’s new bike is to Lee’s measuring system. This could help so many if the R. A. D. Is legit.
@@kmazzanti It's debateable. RAD is probably more applicable to old school riding technique (the hang off the back style) vs modern technique (stay centered and get low)
@@mrvwbug4423I calculated my RAD and found that my setup at the time was +6mm off my ideal. My stem stack height at the time was already too low and scary to ride steep descents in. Some of your videos have made me want to get into mountain biking, it looks fun and I already like to bike not only for fun, but as my form of transportation since I dont want a car. I've also realized that I want to go into bicycle mechanics as a career path with help from your videos. Keep up the good work with your videos and enjoy that awesome looking bike
The way you have the saddle jacked all the way forward makes your effective STA even steeper than 76.21. If you leave it there you could have gone steeper. Great bike!
having the perfect bike is great, I rode every XL model offered by all the big bike companies before i decided just to build my own frame, and it’s literally the best bike i have ever owned and ever will own
Congratulations! It is a beautiful bike. I just got word from David this week about the Storm King GP frame that they just built for me. They just sent it to the person who does the cerakote, and I am very excited to see what he comes up with. I hope to have this bike finally built this spring. Woohoo!
I'm on the shorter side too. What I miss in a larger bike is the space to add things. I can't put 2 large water bottles in my frame. I can't put a rear light below my wedge because there is no space. When I rent bikes on trips, the dropper can't fully expand because I can't reach the pedals. Cycling for me is always about adapting what I want vs. what I get.
I just got my first 130mm travel hardtail which is perfect for the flat southwestern Illinois terrain that I have and I took it on its maiden voyage today and it is FREAKING AWESOME!!! I can't compare it to much because I'm coming from a very upright gravel/xc hardtail with a coil shock (I'm like 110lbs) that was WAY too stiff for me and it is game changer it. I know I have been rambling about, but I'm trying to say that once you have something that is tailored to you for the first time it is incredible!!.
I'm right there with you, it took AGES to find a bike that I felt comfortable on; I'm 6'3, but my legs are pretty long, so no matter how far up i oushed the seat, I was always feeling like my quads were working overtime, and at worst - it was like my knees were in my ears like I was some kind of clown on a small bike. After watching and enjoying your videos for the past few years i've learned how customization is a big part of riding, and back then I didn't even know that changing something as small the pedal arm length could make such a difference - but it changed my enjoyment massively! I can go for (no exaggeration) 3-4 times longer out on trails without all that extra stress being directed towards my knees and quads, I feel like I can take big strides when I'm building up speed, much more comfortably - THANK YOU
Been watching you for a while. I love your channel. I just got into riding. I'm a bug guy 6'6 280lbs. I bought a ascend fat tire rigid frame XL. I've never been on a bike that feels great and fits me. All other bikes have always felt small.
My son has Achondroplasia and is about to get his first bike. It is customized to him as his limbs are very short. It’s very cool to see he will have more options as he grows. I love your new bike by the way, and the knife is very cool.
Between the weather and having a two year old, I too finally got to ride my new bike! When a new bike rides better than you expecting it’s an amazing feeling.
Best way to see if a bike's geometry is right for you - just go ride it. Thanks for pushing the importance of geometry without telling me what geometry I should ride.
I feel you on the properly sized bike. I'm 6'6, and though i don't ride mountain bikes, I do ride road bikes. I got a vintage 10 speed that was abnormally big, and have been riding it every since.
I look at a *TON* of mountain bikes on Instagram. It's the only reason I use it, and the number of times I've stared at them is probably in the thousands. This is one of, if not *THE* nicest bikes I've seen. That blue camo with the raw titanium asthetic, and how contrast with the kaahima looks so dope.
Ok Seth, I’ve been watching you for a few years now. I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned and how much I’ve enjoyed your “shows”. Needless to say, I’m so proud for you and this project. What a great bike. I bought my bike a couple years ago and I love it, although I really haven’t been able to do much with it other than riding it around my neighborhood. I have some medical issues that prevent me from really getting after it. The real reason I bought this bike to begin with is that I have macular degeneration which prevented me from driving. I also have COPD which limits my stamina. I’m hind-sight, I wish I had bought an eBike!i I’d love to convert my bike to electric but I just don’t have the skills or vision. Again, congrats my friends. Keep the rubber on the dirt! Be safe, God bless! I’ll keep watching!
totally with you Seth- i’m six foot but run the 165mm cranks on my trail bike for the extra BB clearance, cadence offset on climbs and the input-damping when dancing the feet around at speed
There's nothing more satisfying than choosing every part on a bike to make it fit you. Although I didn't get a custom frame I built my own bike, I'm 6ft tall so always fall in between large and medium on almost every size guide. After 15 years of riding I knew what I wanted. I found a size large steel frame 17" (which is considered medium in other brands) so has low standover like a medium, but a decent large reach for my body shape. Built it up a few times and experimented with different parts and finally got it dialled. Love it and will never ever sell it. It's like an extension of my body now 🤟

Who doesn't...?
I have been following you, Brian and Alex for all about the same time. You 3 are the only ones I do follow...
Love what you do!
That's awesome that you were able to do this would love to see a full suspension setup with adjusted geometry.
Note to self: Never buy a custom bike frame; I will be ruined for life.

First
Finally for once
So glad to see you actually riding again
I’m still so excited that this is your first 29er
Thanks for posting!
The way you have the saddle jacked all the way forward makes your effective STA even steeper than 76.21. If you leave it there you could have gone steeper. Great bike!

Love the bike, Seth! That "Blue Ridge" camo is sick! Enjoy!

having the perfect bike is great, I rode every XL model offered by all the big bike companies before i decided just to build my own frame, and it’s literally the best bike i have ever owned and ever will own
You deserve that bike. Thank YOU for riding with me :)
Congratulations! It is a beautiful bike. I just got word from David this week about the Storm King GP frame that they just built for me. They just sent it to the person who does the cerakote, and I am very excited to see what he comes up with. I hope to have this bike finally built this spring. Woohoo!
At 5'0" I have had five custom bikes, still ride four of them, also riding on 135mm crank arms for over 10 yrs....Great Video, Thanks
The way you explain things is on point, especially for someone who is getting into biking.

I can go for (no exaggeration) 3-4 times longer out on trails without all that extra stress being directed towards my knees and quads, I feel like I can take big strides when I'm building up speed, much more comfortably - THANK YOU
Congrats on the bike, seems like everything fell into place on that build. I’m really happy for you! Cheers to 2023.

Great bike! Congratulations, your videos are outstanding; thank you for sharing.
Man the sages are sooo sick!!!
Much appreciated!
I love the bmx roots on that frame
It definitely has that vibe doesn't it.
Best way to see if a bike's geometry is right for you - just go ride it. Thanks for pushing the importance of geometry without telling me what geometry I should ride.
Thank you for making these videos they have changed my riding for the better see you in the new year
Congrats Berm... enjoy your build, Blessings to You All @ B.Peak !

The custom fit shows, super dope Bike!
I'm 6' tall and ride a large V3 Santa Cruz Bronson and I switched to 165mm cranks about a year ago. I love them 👍
Ok Seth, I’ve been watching you for a few years now.

Dude that is so cool!
What a way you’ve come since your days on your Trek
It’s so cool to see you build and ride a bike as amazing as this
The bike looks and is something amazing

Such a beautiful steed
There's nothing more satisfying than choosing every part on a bike to make it fit you. Although I didn't get a custom frame I built my own bike, I'm 6ft tall so always fall in between large and medium on almost every size guide. After 15 years of riding I knew what I wanted. I found a size large steel frame 17" (which is considered medium in other brands) so has low standover like a medium, but a decent large reach for my body shape. Built it up a few times and experimented with different parts and finally got it dialled. Love it and will never ever sell it. It's like an extension of my body now 🤟
