    General bike park etiquette signs would be helpful. I remember noticing in the opening day video it was a little chaotic with people stopping in weird places (that’s also cuz opening day) but I think it would be helpful for the uninformed. Like the pre ride re ride and free ride and how to safely scout features, making it obvious that bikes have right of way on the trails that sorta thing. Or just release another trail etiquette video! Great video Seth

      Agree to a point - couldn't help wincing at how many people were just mulling about in bad places in opening day videos - but I also have to wonder if those people would even bother reading signage.

      I know it is overkill but I kinda expected to see an etiquette/rules plaque near the entrance to the trail. I ride in an area that is mostly enduro style trails and all the downhill trails are explicitly marked with rules reminders that are hard to miss. I know it's a high cost but I expect this park will see alot of newbies.

      the signage wouldnt matter at all because people 1) dont pay attention or 2) dont think the rules apply to them. before i moved we had a pretty good local trail system in our state park. what they built with the elevation available ( not a hilly state) was pretty impressive we had jump lines and all that fun stuff. we have about 9 trails that are mtb only. there are big signs at the entrance of the trails saying no hiking, horseback, ect... mtb only. also on every exit there are two big red posts. one says one way, the other do not enter. i cant tell you how many times me or someone i know has almost hit someone alot of times coming up the wrong way. my friend actually plowed into a kid because they ignored clearly visual signage. the trails are very narrow and very hard to see far off friend came around a corner and a kid was standing on the downslope of a massive table top and couldnt see him till it was to late. parents were obviously furious. my friend apologized multiple times but said said its partially thier fault due to hiking on an mtb only trail and going the wrong way one a one way trail. dad was getting so hostile i actually had to step away and call a park ranger. even when the park ranger came and explained that we were in the right and it was their fault for not paying attention. they still sat there an argued with the ranger. they didnt care there were signs and they didnt care they were in the wrong. they were going to do what they wanted regardless of what signs or people told them. its not a signage issue.

    im actually blown away and baffled that someone literally left their bike straight dab in the middle of the landing like that... The guy was geared up too. Even if you never been to a park before isn't it just common sense not to leave your bike in the middle of the trail let alone in the middle of a LANDING? You don't need to be a mountain biker to know that's not ok. It would be one thing if he was standing on the lip like that with his bike off the trail, saw you coming and got outa the way but to stand there like that and then jump at the last second just for you to land on his bike is insane lmfao.

The downside is that there is an influx of new riders who haven't yet absorbed the trail etiquette concepts. If you're an experienced rider taking a group of new riders out, just give them a rundown of the basic rules.

    Hey Seth, I've been watching the channel for many years, thanks for the great content. I've only been mountain biking around home in NE Florida for the last two years. I was working in Greenville SC a couple weeks ago and was able to visit Berm Park on a day off. The ride/mostly walk up was brutal for this Florida boy, but beautiful. Due to skill level, I only rode chain whip and high roller, really enjoyed high roller. My only comment is about bear country. A bit more signage that it is a bit more sketchy than beginner/intermediate. I was also talking to a guy at the top of the trails that on a previous trip had the same person stop on the top of a table top twice. All in all great trails and can't wait to make another visit. Keep up the great work.

    Perhaps you need some bike park etiquette signage. Simple stuff like who has the right of way, no stopping in the middle of the trail, don't leave your bike in the middle of the trail, avoid skidding, etc. Word of mouth is important in addition to this, but signage goes a long way as the primary safety.

    We have a black diamond trail here that starts off quite basic then gets steeper, it has some large jumps towards the bottom. There’s always people stopping at the jumps, walking on them, sessioning them to try clear them.
    It’s terrifying coming over a jump and seeing bikes and kids everywhere near the landing. I’ve stopped riding the trail on weekends as I can’t ride at any pace when I know the risks involved when the trails are busy.
    It’s also a shuttleable trail network via the train. So it encourages people to ride the trail who haven’t even touched a black diamond trail before.

      You're right. I should have stopped, and I would recommend anyone in that situation stop for their own safety and for others'. But in this situation, I looked up right after landing a jump at full speed, and didn't make the right decision. If your friend is injured on the trail, you should immediately run down the trail and wave your arms and yell (from the side) to warn others. I've had to do this before.

    • @dvs620
      @dvs620 2 года назад +3

      @@SethsBikeHacks I know this wasn't the case, but take that bike on the trail and place it upside down further up the trail where people can see it in time to stop. That's a universal sign of someone being hurt if I'm not mistaken.
      Every now and then, I'll stop to scout something get off my bike, take a few steps and then remember, get the bike off the trail. It's not that I have bad etiquette, it's just that sometimes I get hyper focused on something and temporarily forget that I didn't move the bike.
      It might have been extreme bad luck, he stopped for a bit and you snuck up on him. Or, maybe it was just bad etiquette.
      Let's all be safe. It's easier for the person stopped to get out of the way than for a rider to stop at full speed. So make the easy call and clear the trail.

      @@dvs620 was just going to post this. if somebody is hurt in the trail that shouldn't be moved for fear of hurting them more, then place a bike upside down up the trail a few feet.
      would it have been safe to try to stop completely? Seth was going too fast and half the time he had to react he was in the air.

    • @dvs620
      @dvs620 2 года назад

      @@rcranes2227 There's so much more that it could be than what we saw. Maybe the guy tried to stop, bailed, the bike went over and he stood on the lip to just collect himself for a second and Seth comes flying by. I know when I've had to bail, I kind of just sit for a second, then get up and grab my bike. But I'm not at a bike park. Happened last week at a pump track. I bailed on a high banked berm. The next time, I had to bail again and was able to climb on top on the berm while my bike slid. Since no one was coming, I just sat on top, calmed myself down for a second because I was annoyed, then grabbed my bike and pulled it to the side. (Side note, I got in my head and kept coming into the berm low and hot and was getting spit out the top. I never did get through it.)
      Or, maybe the guy just left his bike there while he hung out doing whatever he was doing. Point is, we don't always know the reasons.
      For the most part, be mindful of others, stay off trail if you're looking at a feature first. If you crash/bail and are able to move quickly off the trail, do so. But don't always assume it's bad etiquette.

    • @rcranes2227
      @rcranes2227 2 года назад

      I would say there's very few excuses for being unhurt and not clearing the trail absolutely immediately. especially in a bike park, especially after a blind turn and especially after a section where a good portion of the approach has a rider in the air (where they can't do anything). I don't really care if somebody is gathering themselves after bailing, that was extremely dangerous what they did.
      I paused the image and the bike is pretty darn entry level. so I'm sure they didn't know better and now they do. but I am reticent to comment here and say "if you bail and need to gather yourself it's ok to leave your bike on a landing."
      Just assume there's somebody barreling behind you and move out of the way accordingly, is my motto.
      ok, that's probably not my motto but I think it's a good way to go.

    Maybe on the trails there could be signs like "do not stop" for newbies and remove crashes from the trail etc. Seems obvious, but for new people, not so much. Rules sign in funky color or bullet point signage. Excited to get started

  • @ckepka04
    @ckepka04 2 года назад +5

    Seth, if u place a QR code (leading to a donation page) on all the signage in the park it would be a great way to raise funds to maintain the trails...of course u would want to disclose what the QR code is for. But I think it could be beneficial to keep the park funded.

    A buddy from PulpMx Nation told me about this place this last summer. I already had a big trip to the Motocross Des Nations last month. This next summer I'm definitely going to try and make the trip from Cookeville Tennessee. I've only been once it was at Snowshoe WV and I loved it, with my moto background I'm hooked. Being that I have family in Asheville plus BP is a fo sho in '23 😍

    You should do more videos like this, just riding with people on trails, the highly produced videos are great, but just seeing you ride trails is great.

    Hey Seth!! So I had the chance to travel from Atlanta to hit Berm Park this weekend. First I would like to say that NC is way steeper than N. GA. We'll just say that my lungs were on fire on the way up. =) In the end I thought the trip to Berm Park was well worth it. GA doesn't have the speed or elevation that NC has. I will need to come back so I can spend a few days Berm Park so I can ride the lines a little cleaner. Also, you should talk to Howard over at Philly Italian.. He pitched me a video on how he can become RUclips famous. Its pretty sketchy though. lol. Thanks for all that you do for the MTB Community

    I made it out to Berm Park on a Tue (after driving for a week and half from Santa Rosa, CA). there were only 3 other people on the park. it just rained the day before so it was a little muddy. I had to ride it after traveling so far. It was a blast.
    I must recommend anyone after riding take a right out of the parking lot and drive 10 minutes to Dr Brown's BBQ. excellent family owned BBQ joint and great food and cheap prices.
