When my sister told me she was in a RUclips video today I didn’t think it was gonna be my favorite mountain biking channel, nor did I know she was training to be a bicycle cop 😭😭😭
To be fair to Seth, if you've ever done cyclocross on an MTB, it is definitely slower riding on grass than on a cyclocross bike. Really the only advantage of a MTB is if there are very rough or technical parts. It's more or less like taking a MTB to a road race.
I believe every police officer should be required to do at least one rotation on a bike patrol. The benefits seem incalculable. - improved cardiovascular fitness for the whole squad - improved mental state (something sorely lacking it seems among many officers) - better understanding and mental map of the built environment (think about all the things you miss behind the wheel of a car) - more empathy for cyclists and pedestrians - Improved response times in dense areas - more opportunities to have healthy interactions with the public (builds better relationships with police) - saves police departmentments boatloads of cash I could go on, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.
I'd also like to see cops while in school required to take cycling classes. Who knows maybe one of them will like riding down the stairs & start advocating for more cycling infrastructure & trails.
All of those points aside I think it would be one of the best jobs to do as a police officer especially because after a few months at a location you will know the best places for coffee etc and be seen as a pillar of the community by interacting with people in a more casual manner
More departments across the world need to implement this idea into their communities. Like the Chief said, you are more accessible to the community and, therefore, more approachable.
I'm the chief training officer for a new campus EMS 911 program at my alma mater, and we're rolling out our program of student-EMTs on bicycles responding to 911 calls this winter. Since we're on bikes, I figured we should have some bike training, and this actually gave me some ideas for what to incorporate (slow race, stairs, and curb mounting) Really cool video, seth!
I have once seen a bike patrol cop chasing a suspect - I was working gate security at a college football game and there was a fan who was drunk and threatening, so I call for police backup to my gate on my radio. The police officer arrived on a bike, quite quickly, and as soon as she was in sight, the drunk guy took off running. The officer had to dodge another fan in the crowded area near the gate, and caught a pedal on a cement column - but as her bike went down, she basically took a leap off of it, landed running, and took off after the drunk guy. I thought I would never know how it ended for sure, except that a few minutes later, that office along with three others brought that guy back into view outside the gate, where the drunk guy decided it would be a good idea to take a swing at the officers. He was arrested, taken away to jail, and I assume woke up in jail the next day with a wicked hangover and ALL the regrets, as well as a collection of charges against him.
I'm a Bike Medic at my EMS agency and I loved taking the BERT classes! The box, and key hole were my favorite. As long as you look over your shoulder and ride your brake a bit you can pedal in circles all day without hitting the cones.
@jaystarr6571 pretty cost prohibitive. We only use the bike team for a few days 8-10 times a year. The longest we ride is about 10 miles. The furthest I've ever gone was 14ish miles at the US open in 2014. That was a miserable day lol
@@GianMariaRomanato it looks like this department lets them use their own bikes. Usually, department issue bikes are Treks or Schwinns and will actually have "Police" on them.

When I was with the Ft Worth police department back in the late nineties I enquired about the bike patrol. Found out they were kind of an elite group and not easy to get into. I eventually went on to downhill/Freeride for several decades.
I live in Jackson County in Southern Oregon and am part of a search and rescue bicycle response team. We do things like trail, searches, urban searches, or ride along with a community ride, and provide first aid or just help.
Seth if you're interested in the EMS bike team side. Guilford County NC has a great team. It is a whole different game maneuvering when your bike is loaded with 50lbs of gear.
I started Bike Patrol in the early 90s here in S Fl. It also got me into mountain biking. I had a lot of good times patroling. It was a good way to learn shortcuts in neighborhoods. There's nothing like doing a traffic stop on a vehicle when you pull up on a bike. Drivers always have that suprise look.
I think even moderately skilled mountain bikers would have an advantage with anything involving balance and negotiating obstacles but would get absolutely demolished in the endurance test. We're just not used to riding flat out like a road biker.
Yo! It was cool to see you in Boone. I was the guy you talked to on King Street! I was super awkward because I was rushing to work, but I wasn't gonna miss a chance to say hi.
I met Paula Tricky from Pacific Blue once. While it's true the actors weren't hucking to flat off the Santa Monica Pier or ramp jumping cars, they were still required to learn basic skills like riding over curbs and down stairs so they could get facial shots in the chase scenes...which was still impressive.
This was a lot of fun. Respect to you featuring the police and not making them look inferior. Respect to the officers for being humble and knowing your skills

I feel like rigid forks and hardtails might have an advantage for these challenges. No compression when pedaling hard. And some other things that may come up. But sure with suspension you can rip it on stairs, curbs, tree roots, etc. Maybe the hardtail is lighter for a pick up and carry move. Either or is fine I guess.

Great video, Seth. I was recently wondering how our bicycle partrol officers (Im in the UK) are trained, we certainly dont have many where I currently live, though i did see a couple during a festival in the city. The main thing i noticed was how poorly specced the bikes were - basically your standard cheap imitation "MTB" and the riders (1 male, 1 female) looked uncomfortable just pedalling along (the dude was like a newborn deer) I dont think they have this level of training, based on times ive seen them. Ive rode mountain bikes since my early teens and was just thinking to myself how easily i could outrun them even on my singlespeed rigid park/jump bike. I think it would be cool to see some reasonably good riders and half-decent bikes protecting the peace. They would look a lot less goofy aswell 😅 hard to take them serious at all currently
I would think the more serious bike patrols would have E-Bikes nowadays but I suppose there would still be downsides. That and drones. Technology has come so far.
It's a compormise for either ebikes or non-ebikes. Ebikes are very pricey and weigh more. Regular bikes are lighter, cheaper to maintain. Most agencies either don't have the budget for bike patrol or they can only afford a few bikes
