      @@Paios That's true! Our cable stretcher is known as the "fourth hand" as we had already introduced a "third hand" brake tool. The third hand was a device that held brake calipers together to make it easier to install the cable. Similar end result, different approach.

    The knobby knife was really intended for motocross knobbies that get worn down rounded really fast on rocks, and square knobbies give much more traction in mud and sand. It can extend the useful life of the tire. It's not that motorcycle tires are more expensive, they're just much much harder to change.

    I've got a couple things to add as a bike mechanic
    -there is an attachment you can get for your truing stand to true disk brake rotors, it can either be an arm that you can adjust in tiny increments and hear when it's rubbing, or it can be a gauge that has very fine measurements that are felt by a spring-loaded piston.
    -Another thing that can work for pulling cables through a frame is a vacuum and either dental floss or fishing line. Feed it into one end and use the vacuum to pull it through the other hole, then similarly tape it to the cable.

    • @Coastal_Cruzer
      @Coastal_Cruzer 7 месяцев назад

      Save yourself money and just use an old brake caliper on your bike as a truing gauge. That way however you tune or tweak it, that's how it will be on your bike.

  • @octaviangusgus
    @octaviangusgus 3 года назад +6

    The third hand tool actually has a much more practical application. When you replace housing, it can be hard to get new ferrules seated all the way. Customer picks up their bike, shifts it, ferrules settle on there more, and now the bike shifts like garbage and the customer is unhappy. This is what a lot of mechanics call "cable stretch" because it makes it sound like it isn't their fault. The third hand let's you put tension on the housing to seat those ferrules completely so you know it is going to keep shifting well when it gets picked up and ridden. I use it on every new bike I build and every time I replace housing or ferrules.

    The WH-1 is the most useful, underrated tool that Park makes. Literally all tasks involving a wheel are improved by using it. It boggles my mind when I walk into bike shops and see mechanics trying to set up tubeless or change a rotor with the wheel on the ground.

    A bigger version of the knobby knife is actually used on offroad motorcycle tires to improve grip on them, since they dont have that many knobs it wont take as much time.

    The Park DT-2 rotor truing tool is one of my favorite tools - it's surprising how many times I reach for it to get my rotors 'just right'
    spoke wrenches also can remove presta valve cores too,
    wd-40 in the chain cleaner works great for getting a dirty chain clean
    Tire knob cutter - mostly for dirt bikes and flat track race bikes....far fewer knobs than a mtb tire!!!

    The knob knife is actually quite often used by pro mechanics. They cut down the middle knobs of heavy mud tyres in order to decrease rolling resistance (and therefore increase speed) without sacrificing cornering grip.

    You left out a number of incredibly helpful tools such as a tube expander, spoke cutter (phil wood being my favorite), spoke punch, ultrasonic parts cleaner (far superior to the chain cleaner with the brushes), vernier calipers, impact screwdriver, riv-nut kit and seat tube reamer. Yes tube expanders are a real tool.
