I noticed all of these tattoo regret videos boil down to: "I was young, impulsive, and uninformed about the tattooing process. I did not think through my tattoo designs, size, or placement. I chose designs that I found online without considering my own body, style, or personality. I did not give myself time to be sure that's the tattoo I want, nor did I bother saving money to afford a quality tatttoo, so I went straight to a questionable artist/shop."

What I notice is that being young/ a teen is often about rebelling against mainstream society and expressing that rebellion and as people get older, they find they want to fit into that society more than stand out and suddenly all the things they did to stand out as unique becomes a detriment rather than a badge of honour.

Well but sometimes you don't know and you're not even aware you should know all these things. You can't blame sometime for being a beginner at stunning and not having knowledge from the perspective of sometime who's many years engaged in something. It's not like she didn't give any thought at all. The gothic cathedral looked amazing at the beginning and seemed great as an idea. She might have simply not known all the things she could pay attention to, or even had she knew, it's different just reading/knowing about something, and actually knowing/imagining how that will turn out in practice. You need some experience to be able to do that. I think you're too much victim blaming here.

Well. Tattoos are still fairly popular, although the fad is fading fast. Thank goodness. People are inherently social, and we judge based on our social norms. Tattoo'd people judge just as hard as anyone else, if not harder. Many have some sort of axe to grind.

I got my first tattoo when I was 18, it`s a half-sleeve to cover up SH scars and I am absolutely grateful that I was able to get it at that age. By covering up the scars I was able to close this chapter and got the confidence back that I lost from feeling like I always had to hide them. The tattoo transformed something I was ashamed of, into something I was proud to show.
I think people who want tattoos to be for 25years+ sometimes forget, that for some people tattoos aren`t just a style choice, but have reasons, purposes or huge emotional values and you`ll never find an age where you can be sure that everyone has found themself and won`t regret anything. There are 40 years old people who still have struggles knowing who they are.

    • @hawkeyescoffee6399
      @hawkeyescoffee6399 8 месяцев назад

Exactly that. There will always be something and if we follow that logc we won't be letting anyone under 55 get a tattoo. Hell, I was in my early 40s when I finally figured out that I am asexual & biromantic rather than simply bisexual...having got stuck on "oh, I'm equally sexually attracted to men & women" (not much was really spoken about other genders in the 90s)...equally _zero_ for both that is lol, but would happily date any gender and had no idea that different kinds of attraction existed, so just assumed that was what being bisexual was... and "what do you mean people don't just pick any asthetically pleasing person to act as their crush, but instead actually do get the hots for someone?!" 😅😂. Like, for reals, I was maybe 44 or 45 (I'll be 50 this year) when I discovered that "having the hots for someone" wasn't just a saying, that people really do get hot & horny for some other people...even over strangers.
The point of my oversharing is, there will always be something we are still discoverin, whether about ourselves or the world in general and I don't think tattoo regret is just limited to the things done when young. Fir example, my older brother got a memorial tattoo for our dad in his late 40s, within a year he started to get it lasered off because he had chosen a shitty tattoo artist and it aged very badly very quickly (not that it was great to start with). He got it completely removed and found a decent artist to do it right. He was old enough and smart enough to know the importance of finding a good artist, it wasn't his first tattoo (two of his others are huge pieces on his back), but he still screwed up and regretted it.

25 is too old for the limit. Even 21 pushes it for me… like, I understand people make dumb decisions at 18, but if you can have a baby, or join the army, or take on thousands of dollars in student loans at 18, you should have to option to get questionable tattoos. And honestly, 18 year olds would still get tattooed, just at sketchier places that may or may not follow health guidelines so like 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is why tattoo artists are always trying to explain to clients that some things don’t work. I’ve retired now but clients were constantly coming in w grand ideas for small spaces and it seemed like no matter how I explained it they did not want to hear that you can’t pack that much detail into a small space, that it’ll end up collapsing and becoming an ugly blob. They just couldn’t understand, it always took an exorbitant amount of time to get them to understand what happens. Sometimes I just had to turn them away if they weren’t willing to hear what they *could* do or listen to other options

    • @joanabug4479

That church tattoo seems like the one exception I would hold the tattoo artist at least half accountable for. Just like architects are hired for being reasonable when telling you how the whole house will age, materials, maintenance and so on - why the hell would that guy accept doing a tattoo he knows will look like a block of green-ish black nothing in only a year or so? Get the money and bail? Care close to 0 about the craft? And she said it was a reputable studio... I think this just does more harm to the industry itself if high-ranked folks don't take some responsibility or the creative industry doesn't have any standards like others: construction, medical, etc. Clients may think getting tattoos is for fun, that's their thing - but why is the tattoo artist dealing with it as if it was a joke and not actually changing that person's life when the whole point is that it's permanent? Why agree to make shitty tattoos when he's the one with experience and the know-how about how tattoos age? Now I have to spend decades filtering tattoo artists before I'm convinced I make the right choice, as a client? Isn't THAT rather hurting the industry more?

To be very candid, I'm tired of the few that make impulsive and silly choices wanting things to change that will punish the many. I started getting tattooed at 18 and out of all my tattoos, I only have one that I want gone.
On top of that, she started getting tattooed by a teenager if I heard correctly? The laws being changed to a higher age wouldn't have prevented that.
Poor decision making happens at all ages and many things factor into that. I just dont feel sorry for someone claiming they own it, when they clearly stereotype tattoos and think their mistakes should apply to everyone. 🤷‍♀️

And I honestly like her the most the way she is now on RUclips. And I honestly feel a lot of respect for her for posting this video. I think this is a good video for pretty much anyone to see, and talks about tattoo regret in a hindsight but respectable way where no one is ”blamed” for it.

my first tattoo was done by my aunt. ever since i was little, i told her she would do my first tattoo. i spent YEARS coming up with the perfect tattoo, and 3 days after my 17th birthday, we found a little orange kitten on the road. that little shit got me through a lot, and i cant express just how much he saved my life. when i was old enough and had the time to drive the 6 hours to go see my aunt, i changed my plan last minute and got his paw outline tattooed on my shoulder. im now 21, i got another cat about a year ago, and im gonna get her paw just below his once i can afford it. both of the cats are laying on me while i type this, actually! i dont think i could ever regret that tattoo- even if it faded or distorted, i think id still adore it just because of how important it is to me.

That's not fair. Her tattoos are not well thought out. They honestly don't look nice. It's a mish mash of random images with different styles. I can see why she regrets them. Also it's fine to change personal taste. I mean she probably doesn't wear same hair cut or has same fashion taste. She doesn't have to keep the old as "a reminder of a journey" It's ok to change, let go and move on. Everyone does it all the time in different ways. It doesn't mean that they don't know who they are. I'm glad that the THICK eyeliner I used to wear in my early 20s wasn't permanent. Loved it then. Would hate it now. I know very well who I am though.

. . . I was not prepared for her strange and unfortunate line about the Lithuanian person. Of course, going by your reaction, neither were you! 😂
Her decisions about who to get tattooed by and why to get tattooed were regrettable, and I would understand why she would wish she could change that. Having said that, someone saying they wish they just weren't tattooed at all anymore is like . . . just an alien thought to me. The shame she seems to feel is like the absolute opposite of how my tattoos have made me feel. More confident, proud, accomplished. Not many people are as tattooed as I am, and I have never regretted them. So, while I obviously would encourage her to do what's best for her (removal, finishing the sleeve, blastover), this is just . . . it's like her attitude has been poisoned by the attitudes of others, and that's just tragic to me.

Some of us are very particular about tattoo imagery, placement, tattooers, etc and we get labeled as gatekeeping by these same type of people (Sara). I have been getting tattooed for a long time and I've made plenty of mistakes, but I genuinely believe there needs to be more education or sharing by tattooers as to what kind of stuff you should get and where. Tattooers have been getting a lot of hate recently on TikTok, IG and RUclips for refusing to do tattoos on places like hands, neck/face, but we're starting to see the first generation of people who got these done early and already regretting it. Older millennials and especially Gen X and older people were not rushing to get their first tattoos done on very visible places. A lot of people getting tattooed seem to be rebelling against tattoo industry standards and etiquette which is kind of weird to me.
These tattoo regret videos by influencers are only going to become more common. People are getting tattooed for very different reasons than they were just 10-15 years ago.

I’ve seen South Africans sport a similar style. Your style isn’t better or more correct because it feels more cohesive to YOU. This is why all art is subjective.

  • @ndawn90

I'm in my mid-30s, and I got my first tattoo at age 22.
There are a few that I'm not super crazy about anymore (more specifically my Deathly Hallows tat), but regret is not the word I would use.
Even though I've grown and changed as a person, my tattoos represent moments of my life. Whether or not that point in my life is still relevant, it's still part of who I am, even the Deathly Hallows tat.
I've gone back and forth about covering it up, because on the one hand I don't like the fact that people try to talk about HP with me when they see it (and after the rampant TERFery of the author, I really don't want to have that conversation), but on the other hand I really was a huge HP fan throughout my childhood and early adulthood, and the series really meant a lot to me back then. It's a part of who I was, which is a part of who I am.
All of that is to say that the one tattoo I could even be considered to possibly regret was one I got after the age of 25. So I really don't feel like the age limit is going to make a difference.
I'd also like to point out that 18 year olds can get married, have babies, buy and drive vehicles, buy guns, commit to joining the armed services, open a bank account, all of these really permanent adult decisions, so the idea of restricting the age of tattoos to age 25 is a little ridiculous. Like, you can birth an entire human being, but you're too immature to get a little ink in your skin that can be removed or covered up fairly easily.

At 21 I am the person that I have always dreamed of being - tattoos, piercings, dressing alternative, listening to alt music, etc - I’ve always know. I’ve wanted to be tattooed, and to have a good amount as well. My tattoos (combined with my weight loss) has given me so much confidence - I genuinely feel like myself now that I have tattoos. There are so many people 18-24 who already know themselves well enough to get a tattoo they likely won’t regret - and if you’re a part of the crowd who isn’t getting tattoo to be trendy, but being tattooed for yourself, you’re more likely to end up not regretting them. The whole “age limit should be 25+” for tattoos is stupid, just because some people make poor tattoo decisions before 25 doesn’t mean all people under 25 will

I would still get the same tattoo idea, but completed by someone who is more well-versed and responsible within the tattoo experience. If I could go back to my 18 year old self I would definitely say to be more patient and research the artist you choose. The shop closest to you will not always be the best choice lol. At 45, I’m an elder inky here. I first tattooed MYSELF at 12 with some India ink and a needle and thread. I got a few more in a kitchen in a trailer park before I was of legal age. I collected even more in the 90’s (pre-internet, when shops were mean and excluding and you could only look at a portfolio book out front to see their work) and they were mostly bad 😂 Fortunately, I slowed down and put some effort and funds into coverups, reworks, and one laser removal of my crappy old stuff. And then once I was in my 30’s and could afford good work and had Instagram to find good artists, I’ve gone on to sporting around 30-40% body coverage. I’m not done either.
Honestly? I’ve never regretted it! I always feel more like me every time I get something new and beautiful.
I’ve gotten bad tattoos that I didn’t like, but it’s not regret.
I’m glad that I stuck with the 90’s trend to avoid hands and face ink (although I think it can be beautiful!) Because I can easily go “undercover” and with long sleeves and pants I can look tattoo free in social situations where it’s beneficial. I’m an introvert and don’t always want the attention that comes with heavy work.
I have two teen daughters that will probably go on to get inked. (They’re already pierced) I’m fine with it, even at 18. Although I’ve begged them to listen to my advice on how to go about it to avoid long term regret.
It’s not for everyone, obviously. Making long term permanent decisions as a teen/young adult has real risks. I think as we go on as a society to be more accepting of tattooed people, it’s important to get good education and advice out there to people thinking about inking so they don’t have such massive regrets.

I got my first tattoo at 16.
My mum took me to get it, paid for it, and got one the same day.
I unfortunately picked something that I thought my grandparents wouldn’t hate as much (they’re religious) and was just so keen to start getting tattooed.
By 18 I was already second guessing my first tattoo, but didn’t let that stop me from getting new ones anytime I had an extra $100-200.
From 18-19 I got a bunch of stuff that I barely thought about (song lyrics, so many owls - it was 2013/2014 after all)
I lived in a small town with not many options in the way of tattooists, and it was before instagram.
I moved countries at 20 & 98% of the tattoos I’ve gotten since then I’ve loved, because I’ve made sure to go to better artists & think about what I wanted more in depth.
I started my laser journey last year, and I’ve faded out most of the bad ones on my inner arms - I’ll get a sleeves once they’ve faded more.
(Still have a terrible owl back piece to start chipping away on though 🥴)
If I could go back, I would’ve just waited till I lived somewhere with a better tattoo community & sat on ideas for minimum 6 months before committing.

Regarding the people who can get only one tattoo: my boyfriend is like that! He says he's open to getting another one if he can think of something he really wants but right now, he can't see what that would be so no plans whatsoever. It's actually insane to me, who is actively working on covering my whole body. But I'd never pressure him to get anything.

People will make good and bad tattoo decisions no matter the age and no matter what. If the age restriction would to be 25, younger folks would get them done in shaddy shops and at kitchen tables anyway. The real solution is education tbh.

I’ve been watching your videos for YEARS and you are literally the reason why I have tattoos I won’t regret. I’ve always always loved and wanted tattoos, but I started watching you as a teen(now 22!) and your advice helped me to actually take my time with my tattoos. I got my first at 19 after more than a year of thinking on it, I got this big gorgeous starry moth on my sternum and although it’s a bit blown out now ( learned my lesson with a not super experienced artist lol) I still love it SO much and what it means to me.
Now I save up and I wait and really think about what is going to be on me forever. I pay more for truly good work, and it’s so worth it. I have the most beautiful shoulder piece of this moon lady with clouds, I’ll have to add it to the react submissions but I paid $600 for it which was $200 more than what I paid for my moth sternum tattoo, and it really shows in quality and craft.
For my birthday last year I made a tattoo appointment to get a star on my neck/collar bone and I PLANNED on getting a moon on my middle finger (wanted that for years upon years) and I was also gonna get a bunch of little stars in constellations and stuff on my hands.
I decided at the appointment I should wait on the stars, so I only got the outline of the moon and my star on my neck which healed beautifully. Now though, I’m really glad I didn’t get my hands covered in stars, all your videos are not only entertaining but informative and helpful to making informed decisions like this. I know that those little stars wouldn’t heal that well, it’s also a trend tattoo, and I don’t know if I could deal with wonky stars on my hands if it went wrong.
I’m glad I didn’t rush too many tattoos either, cause I have so much space to work with in the future for beautiful pieces!!!
Long way of saying thanks for being a good tattoo influence lolllll

also, as someone who is 24 and will be 25 in May, I got my first tattoo at 18 and could never regret it. I had planned that tattoo since I was 11! I think it's impossible to generalize when someone would be ready to get tatted based on age, it makes way more sense to focus on educating young people about finding a good artist, and recommending that they only get a piece when they can afford to go to the artist they really want.

I think education and standardization is the solution rather than putting higher age limits. Definitely in support of the limit being 18, bc anything younger is just wayyyy more likely to make a decision without properly thinking about consequences. But in general just knowing more about consequences, risks, and important considerations for getting tattooed would help a lot with the problem of impulsive regrettable tattoos. People in general just change sooo much between 18-25, it's impossible to say what is right in every circumstance. I see it the same as informed consent for medical decisions. People have the right to bodily autonomy and to make those decisions for themselves but they also have the right to be informed about everything involved. It's a complicated issue that needs to involve the responsibility of the person getting tattooed, tattoo artists, and the general public/culture around tattooing.

  • @dorkyKittyXoX
    @dorkyKittyXoX 8 месяцев назад +3

See, as a tattoo artist, I think the problem lies more with artists not educating and holding accountability with their clients, not the age. If we change the legal age, people will go get tattooed in someone’s basement anyway, just like teens do right now.
The crux of the issue is the fact that some tattoo artists aren’t educating clients thoroughly for fear of losing that appointment, which in turn makes them lose money. Her hand tattoo is unfortunately a good example of that. That artist should have told her no, and explained to her why that tattoo wouldn’t heal well in that spot.
I know that adults can make their own decisions, and it’s not the tattooers’ job to be completely responsible for people, but I think as tattoo artists it’s our job to make sure the client is completely educated about the decisions they’re making.
I hate that she regrets her tattoos, unfortunately it’s something she’s going to have to come to terms with, and I hope she’s learned how to execute her boundaries better, but that hand tattoo could have been prevented.
But yes I agree, do not get tattoos for the sake of tattoos. Please, take it from me, just take some time to think about it.
Sadly for her I think a lot of the reason why she doesn’t like them is her own preconceived notions about people who have tattoos, just based on her comments about looking like a “delinquent” 😅 so I hope mentally she realizes one day that those two things don’t correlate, regardless of what others think.

I don’t like one of them anymore, bc it’s all blown out and wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but I was 25 and I wanted to get a tattoo and wasn’t willing to wait! lol (so yeah changing the age to 25 won’t help 😂) I made the artist redraw it like 3 times (she was an apprentice and came out with something SO FAR from my initial request that I was shocked) and I eventually was just like close enough! And I went for it. If I get an opportunity to have it covered up I will, but I don’t have time or money for that right now. It’s easily covered up with clothes so I don’t think about it too much. As a really heavily tattooed person who got first tattoo at 19 (I am now 31), I can only give one advise: please get tattoos when mature, when you have money for a proper studio, when you worked full time at least for a while (unless you are full time artist or a freelancer etc...). So to me 25 sounds like an ideal age for tattoos and especially if you want to become heavily/visibly tattooed. I'd never get tattoos I got when I was 19-20 old and more I wanted at the time, but never got them. 😆 People might be: but you started way younger too!!! Well, that's why I am writing this comment. I definitely can compare tattoos when people get them at 18 or 25+, really...
Don't want to be rude either, but her tattoos are kinda ugly, so no wonder she regrets them.

I was given similar advice by a lovely, very visibly tattooed woman when I was around 19 or 20 - she didn’t regret being tattooed, just that the ones she has didn’t reflect who she was now and that she wished she had that space for better/more meaningful art. So that stuck with me, and now in my thirties I’m personally happy I waited until I was older.

    • @demonsalwayswin

@@Tara_stara Totally! I fortunately got only two small tattoos until when I was 20 as a student, so I did not have money for artistic or bigger tattoos. But in retrospective I'd never get those tattoos. I would get for sure something way more bigger and what's matching my current style. I do not regret them either, but one of them is already covered up (and could not be completely covered up with the newer design unfortunately even if was small) and the other one - well I'd be happier if I did not have it. 😆

The whole age thing, I think, has a connection to the traditional way of thinking about where to place a tattoo...at a younger age, you should probably choose placements that won't be as visible & make sure it's something that is either really important to you or you've loved for as long as you can remember already. That way, when you've matured, you can make a confident decision to have more visible tattoos, getting more creative & know for sure what you want the world to see. Basically, earning a different level of accomplishment to unlock more realistate. 🤷‍♀️ As for what exact age to start at, I don't know; I waited until 33 years old to get my first tattoo 🙃 everyone has their own reasons & life path.

I spent nearly a decade watching tattoo content before getting tattooed (my parents would have kicked me out if I started before I moved out). I’ve wanted to be tattooed since I saw a good tattoo for the first time when I was in high school. I started getting tattooed in 2019 when I was 23. I think there’s definitely a process to understanding yourself and what you want to look like permanently, if you want to be part of the tattoo community and what tattoo society is like, learning what your tattoo style or styles are, what makes a good tattoo, and how to strategically place your tattoos depending on what kind of societal interactions you are comfortable having. I think it was crucial for me to start getting tattooed in non-visible places and move to more visible places when I found my groove and my style and artists I trusted. You also have to understand that being visibly tattooed is going to lead you into some interesting, sometimes unpleasant conversations and sometimes discrimination. So dipping slowly into being treated differently is usually better.

He still loves us, of course, but let his disdain be known. However, when my sister delivered her daughter stillborn last year, he announced that he wanted to get a tattoo in her memory! that will likely be the only tattoo he ever gets in his lifetime. As a 20 yo planning on getting my second tattoo this month, I think raising the age limit is dumb. I already complain enough about the drinking age being 21 in the US cause there are so many "mature older adults" with way worse drinking habits than some of my peers. Anyone can make dumb decisions at any age, if I can go die in a war at 18, then let me at least have a cool piece of art on me too. It always feels so condescending when people talk about how my "prefeontal cortex isnt fully developed yet" so that must mean I'm an idiot, right? I'm doing my best to make sure these are tattoos that will last through the ages with me, I'm not just making these desicions on a whim like what all these people seem to always imply is the case when you get tattoos before 25. I've done my research, tested out drawing things on myself with just a pen, and have enjoyed the subjects of my tattoos for years, how much more "mature" can I get?

I think 25 is just stupid. Like that’s so old to wait, you’re an adult, like you can buy a house if you have the means to buy one, you have your own financial decisions, you can have children, like come on. 21 is the oldest I would say to wait. The ONLY tattoo I have a little bit of regret for is one that fit a mild infection from the artist being WAY too heavy handed and sending me off without even Saran wrapping it. Even then I don’t regret it, I want it touched up by someone else but I love all of my tattoos, especially the first one I ever got. It’s so special to me, it’s my first, it’s from lil peeps album who was my favorite artist. I cried so much when he died and his music helped me sooo much during hard times. I got it on SH scars which had helped me. I’ve relapes a few times but that tattoo has helped me in that regard. It’s just so meaningful if it was to disappear I would cry so much. I’m 24 right now, I think I should be able to get tattooed. I can’t imagine not being able to just because some people might make poor decisions.
