The idea that "no one talks about" people regretting tattoos is the biggest joke. That's literally the number one thing people say about tattoos. I cannot think of a more common saying from people without tattoos, it's like their motto

I hate when people make light of addiction like this - I somewhat doubt she had a psychological dependency on tattoos or was prioritising them above basic needs :/ it really cheapens the concept and hurts people who actually have addiction.

    • @scarletsletter4466
      @scarletsletter4466 11 месяцев назад +9

Agreed. Hot take: as a clinician I don’t even like the colloquial use of the term “addiction” to refer to compulsive behaviors like gambling or gluttony in basic human functions like eating & sex. Sure, you can FEEL like you crave those things, but the human body is wired to get satisfied by food & sex, not crave more, as with addictive drugs. You have to eat to live, so “food addiction” is a total misnomer. The misuse of the term addiction isn’t helpful for patients trying to change their compulsive behavior. It actually makes it harder for them to change.

      CW- talk if self harm
This is just anecdotal , but I do think you can have addictions to things that aren't substances, as I had what I would describe as a self harm addiction that went on a few years. I was institutionalised and literally had spasming shaking episodes that went on hours because I couldn't self harm anymore.
I would imagine that this experience could be mapped on to any experience that changes your brain chemistry significantly, like adrenaline seekers, or even to things like food and sex.
There definitely is a current in popular vernacular to use therapy speak inappropriately though, which sucks 😞

I'm now 23 and have gotten 2 gorgeous floral tattoos (1 of roses across my collarbone/upper chest, and 1 with sunflowers on my shoulder blade). I don't believe I will ever regret them. They are gorgeous and meaningful. However I could see it being possible that in the future my floral patterns won't be my style anymore, but that's not a reason to regret them! Just a reason to get new ones that match future me

  • @ian_snow

I can’t believe any tattoo artist would agree to do this. Also, I love my girlfriend, but if she came home with my name tattooed across her forehead, I would immediately break up with her. This screams poor decision making, and I don’t want any part of that in a partner.
As for regretting getting tattoos, maybe don’t get some spur of the moment pos, or a meme or something. I’ve been getting tattooed since 1989 and I don’t regret any of them. Each and every one of them were well thought out ahead of time. If I ever have any tattoo related regrets, it’s that eventually I will run out of room for more.

This is so effin frustrating! As someone who is semi tattooed (1 each shoulder, calf, biceps, and ankle) the "you'll regret it" argument is why my family have NEVER seen one of my tattoos before it was half a year old. I canNOT show them anything without getting that regret speech (happened with my asymmetrical piercings, too), so I make sure I've lived with anything for months before they see it; I can always answer "haven't regretted it in # months, so..." 🙄
And, honestly, even if I do regret one of them eventually, I love them all NOW, and they make me happy RIGHT NOW. Listening to people talk about regretting tattoos seems so pessimistic; anything could go wrong, bit you've got to at least try to assume not everything will.

Doing a spouse’s name wouldn’t make me feel much more comfortable than doing a BF/GF’s name because my husband got a shitty tattoo of his divorcée’s name back when they were married.
It is now hidden by a badass dragon.
Only reason it didn’t bother me when we first got together is because it was relatively small, faded from it being so old (I think I was like 9 years old when he got it so I that would mean he was about 23) and it being on a part of his back that is inconspicuous enough that I only saw it rarely

As someone who’s got her first tattoo in her 20’s, took LOTS of time to chose the pieces that I wanted and has commitment anxiety, I’ll say something I personally haven’t seen before: I have tattoo regrets of tattoos I DIDN’T get. In other words, I regret NOT getting tattooed sooner. Yes, while I’m glad I didn’t get the classic Pinterest tattoos in my teenage years, I also regret not getting the deeply meaningful tattoos at specific times and locations in my life. Of course, someone could say that I could get them now, but it wouldn’t be the same. I hesitated for so long before actually getting tattoos because of the pressure to remain “clean”, and everybody telling me that I would be regretting them. Now I regret not living for myself sooner. I see my tattoos as timestamps of meaningful snapshots in my life, and I feel like I have “left out” significant timestamps from the story featured on my body. To me, getting tattooed is the one thing that I can do for myself, as an act of ultimate trust fall with myself. I claim my body to be mine, and my choices to be mine and mine alone. I’m slowly getting more and more, and with each tattoo, I feel more like myself. So while I wouldn’t have wanted to rush the process, I have some regrets of specific times where I really wanted to get a specific, significant tattoo, and didn’t, out of fear. It’s like my anxiety won then

Although my father does not like tattoos, he always told me to wait until my brain was more mature before getting one. He told me that the longer I thought about it, the less likely I was to regret the tattoo. I can safely say that he was correct. I did not get the tattoo when I was younger, but waited until I was 33. The tattoo I ended up getting is a treasure for me.

You're not being controversial, I think lots of people get tattoos just because everyone else has them. My brother got a sleeve and he regrets it, wore long sleeves in the summer for a while lol. If you put a lot of thought into and get something truly meaningful, you're less likely to regret it.

I got my first tattoo on my 18th birthday, in 2004. Have been getting tattoos ever since and I have yet to regret a single one. Even the ones with negative experiences attached to them, they're part of my story. Even the mistakes my artists made over the years are part of the story and I wouldn't change them. I feel sorry for people who regret their tattoos, but I do think a lot (but not all!) of tattoo regret is due to getting tattooed for the "wrong" reasons, i.e. trying to impress your buddies or having your cousin "tattoo" you in their basement.

Ana’s reasonings for regretting the tattoos whether she actual believes them are legitimate regrets I’ve heard. I have a few friends and my brother who have used tattooing in place of self harm, so while they don’t hate how they look, once they entered a place where they didn’t have SI anymore the tattoos became reminders all over their bodies of dark days just like SH scars.

98% of the time I don't even notice my own tattoos. They are such a part of me now that they are like any bodypart, they are just there. Then 2% or the time I go like "ooooooh, I forgot about that tattoo". Seems funny to someone not tattooed, but I really don't see them in my everyday life even if the are always in my sight. Just like I very rarely notice like my hand and go "oooh, yeah I've got a hand on my body".
I can honestly say that today I might not have gotten the same tattoos as I did like 20 years ago, but there is no regret. Just like I have scars on my leg from a surgery gone infected or limp chronically because of an injury the tattoos are really just a visual reminder of things gone through and living a life where I actually have lived a little.
On the other hand I can say if I did get a tattoo of someones name in my forehead I probably would regret it. Face tattoos are still not looked at like a normal thing, and names are still a bit of a stretch anywhere on the body. But if you have ANY common sense while getting the tattoo you should not have to be ashamed or regret.

Once I seen this yesterday I couldn’t wait for your vid cause at this point people who regret is really pushing it down others and giving them the idea that “oh I might actually just regret mines” or scaring others who wants them not to get it. I understand that some younger folks who do it before 25 might regret it. But some actually knows what they want and believe in. Like I wanted till this year when I turned 29 cause I did say too myself “let me wait till my late 20s” cause I definitely didn’t have the funds and wanted to go to a reputable artist. But if I started young the regret thing wouldn’t cross my mind. It’s my story and shit maybe in my next life I will plan definitely 😂.

Portrait theft is so crazy, like how narcissistic must you be to genuinely believe that's you, instead of the billions of other people it could be? This reminded me of a situation from when I was in school many moons ago - one of my art projects for GCSE was a big portrait of my two friends, a guy and a girl, that was pretty decent. Decent enough I guess for a guy in my year to take photos of it, post it online and say it was a self portrait of him and another girl. A bunch of my friends called him out, saying the portrait was obviously not of him or the girl and people knew I had done it cause I'd been working on it for a while. The portraits were by no means perfect, but it was obvious it was my friends, not him and this girl. The school got involved and told me that I could decide whether he lost that GCSE for plagiarism. I let it slide cause I was a pretty big push over and wanted to avoid confrontation, he didn't physically steal it and submit it as him own, but tried to steal it for clout. Fuck it, we were kids, I hope he's learnt.

My mom made me promise I wouldn't get tattoed until I was 25. Instead, everytime I would get a tattoo idea I drew my design in a notebook. I still have that notebook and flicking through it... yeah I am so grateful to my mom. Some are no longer my aesthetic, some are now a bit cringe, some I don't resonate with anymore...and the ones I would not have minded having gotten is not like it makes any difference that I don't have them. I am 28 now and I don't think I'll ever get tattoed, the risk of regret for me outweights the benefits of having tattoos.

My tattoos are pretty young. My first one is like 3 or 4 years, my newest isn´t even a year old but I think that today there is so much information out there to educate us beforehand and tattoos aren`t as permanent as they once were. So I fully know that if I ever want to get my tattoos lasered or covered up it is going to cost money but it is a possibility. People regret stuff all the time that is what happens in life as humans. People who constantly berade people for doing or not doing something don`t really care that that person has a choice and that it is ok to be wrong. Sure the decision should be done as informed as possible but no one can predict the future even if I could do that, no thanks xD! We do the best with the information we have, what else are we supposed to do?

Also, I'm 35 and I've always loved the idea of tattoos but I could never make up my mind, and I know I would end up regretting what I chose, so I just never committed to anything. And it's not that I'd regret getting a tattoo, I just know I'd brain-spiral and start nitpicking it and end up being tired of whatever design I'd picked, and end up not liking it or wishing I could change it... but that's my brain. I know how my brain works, so I knew it was a better idea not to go ahead and do it.
And I'm glad I didn't. All the ideas I ever had for tattoos were definitely spawned from ADHD hyperfixations.... and I'm not interested in any of the things I previously was.
Some day I might still get something art or pet related, but til I'm absolutely sure, I'm not taking the plunge.

I regretted one tattoo I got at 18 and I got it covered up last year, but I didn’t like the old one because it was done poorly. Some of my tattoos I’ve had for about 7 years now and I don’t regret any of them, even though they don’t fit my current “aesthetic”. I feel like the way I dress will always change but my tattoos are more of a reflection of my life, moments of time and memories. If I regret them someday, at least they will always be a reminder of who I was and where I came from. But the key to not regretting your tattoos, I think, is to avoid getting things because they’re “trendy” or because you’re trying to fit into a certain look. Sometimes the need to fit in and be accepted by people around us overshadows what we truly want for ourselves and what makes us happy.

They’re not getting them for the right reasons, they don’t understand the process and the experience means nothing to them. Tattoo enthusiasts understand that sometimes tastes and people change and you might not love *all* your tattoos anymore, but you don’t *regret* them because it’s about the experience and doing it for themselves.

If I’m gonna regret mine then that’s on me, at the moment I love them and for anyone that should be enough. If they love being tatted great, if they never want one great.
