I needed to hear that! I’ll spend 2 days creating 80% of a video and it will sit for months on my timeline because I keep re-editing the 20% improvement that nobody else notices. The struggle is real.
Man, I feel that all the time! Usually, I’ll give myself artificial deadlines for videos like, “This has to post next Monday at 6am” and force myself to do what I can and then hit post no matter what. What I could do, I did, and now it’s done! Sometimes the only way I can get things posted!
The main reason you are successful, a few things. One, you aren't egotistical and condescending. As a software dev/multimedia developer for over 35 years, I find your channel one of the best out there. I am a fine artist abstract artist, so i know the creative struggle when creating anything, but your videos and content is always concise and relevant to us the viewer and not just to make a buck off a sponsor video.
super helpful and it's clear that you actually take your own advice. the fact that you reply to my comments and even subscribed to me just means so much and it's something that you didn't have to do, but did.
The coolest thing about this channel has been the people I've met because of it! For sure amazing getting to do what I do, but man, the community aspect is the coolest🙌
Great advice, David! I got similar advice a few years ago from a friend of mine with a very successful YT channel and it has served me very well. :) I think a couple of other things I'd add as critical components are: Be Your Genuine Self...and...Always tell it like it is. If you try to be someone you're not, people will see through that immediately. And as a content creator, TRUST is your brand...so tell it like it is and never betray that trust with your audience.
great video. Ur not just spitting out words to make a video, you talk about relationships, I bumped into you at CES and asked for a selfie and you were very nice. you didn't just ignore me , you even asked me questions. I think that is why you are at +400 k subs as you are a genuinely nice guy.
Im also a wedding photographer, now a year into the youtube game and you are so right about always wanting things perfect. Last year I started doing the same "if its 80% it ships" rule and it is honestly life changing. I freed up enough time to start a youtube channel and take my dog on an extra walk every day!
Another great video David! I remember when you were starting off & I actually contacted you because I was looking to buy a sticker set but the shipping to Canada was more than the actual stickers. You sent a pack for free with a hand written note & honestly it meant a lot. I have been a fan since & it’s great watching you grow & evolve the channel to what it is today!
So dang grateful you've followed along for so long! I think that's the coolest part of this whole RUclips thing is the community that forms and the amazing people I've been able to meet because of it. Thank you again!!!
I’ve seen a lot of these videos with this theme, and sadly most of them don’t really go anywhere or offer real constructive advice. But you really nailed this one! Fantastic job!!
My experience is that "free" gets too strongly connected to $$$ when in reality we should be looking at everything is a potential cost / benefit. By that I mean exactly what you and others say: While one might not be getting paid, they're still gaining in other ways, whether it be experience, connections, or even just enjoyment. In the end, you're still getting "paid" only not in the form of a check that you can deposit into a bank account.
That's exactly how I think of it! Sometimes I'm gaining financially and other times I'm gaining in other ways, but if I see a benefit to me shooting something, I'll be there!
Great tips! For the third one, I had that revelation when a fellow content creator told me to stop focusing so much on each aspect of the video. Just get it out and move to the next one. Since then, I’ve had a much more efficient workflow, and the views have not suffered.
Lots of respect David (and family)! I can really relate to the "do some free work". It has gotten me to where I am today (with my channel). The other advice I may add is to always tell yourself to keep going. While progress is nice and important, consistency is the real key!
Thanks for the words of wisdom David... It does seem counterintuitive... I can confirm it is relationship. It was why I continued to tune in. I watch to support your channel, and I appreciate your "Be a Good Human" philosophy... So important... I also appreciate that you listen to subscribers (again it's relationship) and if you missed something, you will come back and say, hey when I did that last video, I missed this or that. And of course the humor at the end. Relationships and laughter... It's what makes us good humans. We need more of it. Thank you.
For real, that's the greatest part of this whole RUclips thing! The community formed and the people I get to meet are the best! Also, always appreciate you watching until the end🙌
People will have someone with a cell phone shoot their wedding photos that are "good enough." A lot of people don't see the value of hiring a professional and clearly the cell phone photographer who works for free has hurt our business.
Hahaha I love the end …, “You’re still here….huh?” Yup I am! Love all this advise relational and practical. Oh and love that first mountain photo! Beautiful couple.
LOL, so much truth in this video. As far as "doing it for free" - that's no joke. This is my fun channel, and I used what I learned to start a 2nd channel on video editing... and got it monetized in 7 months and 45 videos, which I think is doing OK. So, it's OK to "start over" [or in my case, split, and keep going with the 1st channel] on RUclips, using what knowledge you gained to better propel the new venture :D
The "work for free" part is literally describing what studying is. You can go to an university for 5+ years in order to get qualifications for a job, and that's literally free work you're doing. I think it's also contributing to how you see work. If you work some time for free, you learn to work according to your enjoyment, not just for the money. And if you enjoy your work, it will improve much better in quality, just like the interactions with clients, viewers etc. In the end, it's about making ends meet by themselves and working towards finding the right environment for that, rather than forcing the ends together, thus creationg tensions that might pop apart sooner or later.
Love this video. As an athletics photographer , I have heard the "don't work for free...." so many times....and I have and still do defy that with those clients that appreciate my efforts. I cannot count how many times I have worked with a contact that really didnt have appropriated funds but really wanted the images....likewise I have been repaid 10 fold.....As far as the 80% theory, I agree...images I have edited meticulously receive no more kudos than those I slap a preset and minor adjustments! Of course I built that preset for the venue I regular use. You tube is a frontier I have always shied away from as I dont feel I have anything anyone would watch......I use it more for a storage place for promo videos I have created or had created....
Good advice. I began my photogrpahy business by working for free for, ready for this??? 20 months. Funny , I also agree with your second point. Im currently working on a video that talks about the paradox of give and receive. Thanks for the vid.
i always look forward to your vids, i often don't have much to say, but "hi" and I stay to the end... always. and, today ? was no exception.... i feel called out 🤣🤣🤣
Good advice! Yes I was still watching at the end….i mean I don’t really have a choice just on the playlist while I am grinding on the workout lol 😂 Still going strong!! 💪 I look the same as when you last saw me lol 😂
Thanks for the advice. I enjoy your videos. I make bicycle ride videos mainly for my friends to see themselves when they ride with me and creating a record of my rides. I enjoy making and editing videos and am not really interested in growing a brand or “blowing up”. However, getting views is nice.
Dude! What an awesome video! As someone who has been creating content off and on since 2017 but really wants to take it seriously now, this was loaded with incredible advice. I just posted my 2nd video in 2 weeks and your comment about posting every single week for 52 weeks and not expecting any $$$ out of it hit me deep!
David, feel free to delete this message but I wanted to reiterate the giving with no expectation of receiving. Couple years ago I mentioned that I loved your Be A Good Human merch but with the duty and Canadian dollar exchange your hoodies (or as some Canadians call it Hug Bunnies…don’t ask, this Canuck does not know) would cost over $100. Being the great guy you are, you sent me one for free. I offer to pay something but you said no need. So, what I did, is I bought another for $100 (with a couple other things), so it was like paying $50 for each of them. I don’t know if you still lost money in that or not but you weren’t expecting me to buy 1 after you gave 1 and I did not expect the free one. It is all about the relationship you build with your hardcore viewers/subscribers. Also, to support your family, I bought your wife’s single on iTunes.
Be very careful with the "If its 80%, it ships." philosophy. It can be an extremely slippery slope! 80% can easily turn into 75%, then 70%, etc. I would argue it's the main reason many of us feel like we're beta testers with so many products and services we buy. My 2 cents.

Yep. Still here. Always waiting for the after-end screen 😁
I'm gonna make End Cap Crew t-shirts! Hahhaa!
100 percent agree. No such thing as "free" work when you gain knowledge and experience instead of monetary compensation. It's a win win.

David, it was a good to see you at CES!! Full time RUclipsr is my dream!
Keep putting out awesome value to your audience and you'll get there sooner than you think!
I’m not a photographer but enjoy your content for your reviews and your positivity. 😊
Thank you David, for your sound advice. Always a pleasure watching and listening to your videos. Keep up the great work!

10 years in and I still do some free thangs here and there. My favorite advice to give!
Great advice! Sometimes the free work creates the strongest connections because of the mutual passion for the project.
David, amazing. Cheers!
I love the 80% rule!!
Insanely useful to get more done!
9:00 YES gotta follow the 80/20 rule!
It's applicable in so many ways!
Hahaha I love the end …, “You’re still here….huh?” Yup I am! Love all this advise relational and practical. Oh and love that first mountain photo! Beautiful couple.
You are spot on with all the points you touched on, especially the part about limiting output because of perfection.
I don't know if I mentioned this quote, but it haunts me all the time. "Perfection is the enemy of done." So good!

Love these! Thanks for this reminder!
