Surface Pro 8 review: the best of both worlds

- The Surface Pro 8 is the Surface device we’ve been waiting for. It’s a well-made, modern Windows convertible powered by Intel’s 11th-Gen Core processors. It starts at $1,099, a price that doesn’t include the keyboard or stylus. But its high price doesn’t make it a bad device-just one that’s perfect for a fairly specific audience.

Is the price worth it for you?
Yes
You really have to love Windows and circling things with the pen to buy this instead of much more capable MacBook Air 🥶
NOPE NOPE NOPE
Yes it has a full os not a stripped down tablet os
nope, its a nope
Thanks for the transparency about the pricing of the model YOU are reviewing

It has always seemed absurd to me selling the keyboard separately. I can’t imagine anyone using it purely as a tablet. Like I understand selling the pen separately (and keyboard for iPads) as not everyone will be using one and seems more of an optional extra, but keyboard seems like a necessity for surface pro.
Yeah
You're simply wrong.....
Lol my dad did. Literally told me to return the keyboard I bought for him.
Eh, all depends what you're using the device for. Bit of light browsing and media handled through Windows Store apps? Probably don't need to touch a keyboard. Using standard Windows applications or tapping out a hundred words a minute for work of hobby, yeah, probably best to get a keyboard. But even then, a cheap bluetooth one will do the same job if you only need to use it occasionally.
some people think that "keyboard" such as Microsoft or ipad magic is not good enough. Even with Apple magnetic stand features.
They will buy a proper keyboard instead of these two.
At least people who choose desktop OS over mobile iPad OS will.
Well it is better since that's just an option, the price tags alone mean "We don't expect you to bought this, but pay attention that it is not worth it" kind of vibe. All you need is wireless keyboard with dongle or Bluetooth that would last year or two in single charge or replacement battery.
The pricing is absurd, especially for a keyboard that isn't included.
Who buys tech (or anything) at full retail price? I have purchased three SP7s and three SPXs and all have been discounted by 30% to 60%.
Same for all my Surface keyboards/pens and all my other tech purchases...
@@RK-um9tu What even is this comment? Microsoft is selling it at a certain price. OP is criticizing said price. The fact that you wait months to get tech for less is completely irrelevant.
@@RK-um9tu you sound like : who buy a new car at full retail price, Just wait a couple years and buy it at a lower price
I mean it is a touchscreen, pen capable, 2800 x 1920, 120Hz panel with a computer inside it in light body. How many productivity notebooks can you find with exactly that at $1100?
Plus, its Microsoft: like Apple, they have their "branding tax". This isn't exactly suprising especially since Microsoft offered a i3 4GB RAM 128GB at $900 for the Pro 7 without the keyboard or pen last year. Better resolution, refresh rate, i5, 8GB RAM and upgradable SSD seems like a better deal than the 7 for the added $200.
Most people aren't going to get it at launch because it's price will fall at around Black Friday/Christmas/New Year anyway.
Also most people interested in the surface most likely already have a keyboard and pen to attach so don't need to buy it again.
Only thing that desperately needs to improve is using AMD Ryzen 5000 processors or at least higher powered H series Intel processors. 4 cores shouldn't be a thing in 2021.
@@jonathanbaird I think is perfectly relevant. Guy complains about price. Then another guy tells him to wait for it to go on sale so he can get it cheaper. Makes sense to me.
Well done review. It would be nice to see you do more hardware reviews in the future. Great job covering all the important details for anyone who would consider this device.
Great detailed and clean review. thank you.
So excited about this Surface- Been waiting a long time for these updates!
I'm blown away. I guess I haven't looked at laptop pricing in so long that I didn't realize they rocketed to outer orbit. I'm only eyeing the Lenovo Duet 5 right now, but just had a flashback to scoring a Broshiba Satellite 15.6 with an i5 in college for $500, and the crucial 10-key. Modern computing is so foreign now.
Thanks Monica! Love your reviews!
Love that we'll finally be able to use an egpu + video card for more demanding renderings.
I think this might end up being the successor to my Surface Book. The 'Laptop Studio' looks great but I think I'm among the few 'book' owners that actually regularly detaches the screen portion (when windows allows me too!). I like having a lightweight screen I can pop off the keyboard and chill on the sofa with.
Great review, I'm tempted to upgrade from my surface pro 5. The firm factor is perfect for reading sheet music off of.
I'm still on a pro 3 and have been thinking of getting a newer version and this one is finally looking like the one to upgrade to, but that price is a big put off at the moment. I'll wait and see how long my current one lasts, hopefully another year or two and see if there's a reduction in price by then.
@@lordgemini2376 just get a Mac for the same price…
Hardcore Windows user and composer here, I'd recommend an iPad/iPad air for this. Any particular reason why you'd want a Surface?
You know you could just get an android device for 1/10th of a price of surface or ipad if that's your use case. How you would justify upgrading from SP5 to this for sheet music reading is completely beyond me.
@@shadowflar3 ^
The screen has improved greatly this time but the price is still unreasonable.

Eh. Most things of this caliber is gonna be pricey. Your paying for the Microsoft brand name more then the tablet/computer

@@PSYCHOV3N0M lol wth bro
Finally MS has got the right balance b/w form and function!
Of course cheaper would be nicer, but the price is reasonable considering there's no other device offering the same specs/performance.
I might consider upgrading from my SP6 once I'm sure Windows 11 is a good user experience. Despite the overheating, my SP3 still works as a sub-office computer. Considering the lack of repairability of these devices, Surface Pro has been a reliable business solution.
Surface pro has a glitching screen problem that is common
Thank you for your review - from the Whitsundays, Australia! I recieved a surface pro 8 for Christmas 😍
I cant tell if the person in this video is the person I watch in class all the time from Crash Course Kids or like a science kids thing.
She uses “that is” a lot and it makes her words make more sense.
If that really is you, I am legit so happy to see you here. You make things fun and entertaining.
$1879 for a device with 256GB is absolutely insane in 2021
You can literally get a M1 13” MacBook Pro with 16GB of ram and 1TB of storage for $20 more from Apple. And it’s not like their storage or ram upgrades come cheap in the first place.
Also, the M1 easily outpaces the i7-1185G7 in Geekbench.
M1
Single Core: 1705
Multi Core: 7381
i7-1185G7
Single Core: 1417
Multi Core: 4854
And if you prefer 120Hz/Tablet form factor, 12.9-inch iPad Pro with 512GB, M1, MiniLED, Apple Pencil, and Magic Keyboard is $2 cheaper than their review unit.
And to anyone saying that you have to buy both to get all those features, no you don’t. You either primarily use Surface Pro as a laptop or a tablet, picking either an iPad or a MacBook doesn’t significantly handicap you. I agree Apple is constraining iPadOS and they should provide a touchscreen option for MacBook’s (though I doubt I would ever want to use it). But while the Surface Pro is a jack of all trades master of none, iPad and MacBook are each best in their class.
And people thought Apple overpriced their devices, Apple seems like the budget option compared to this.
It's obviously for existing surface pro users. And i'll definitely upgrade
Throw in an ipad pro price in there. Then, only its a fair comparison
You are paying for the form factor and the huge possibilities that come with it. To have the same experience on Apple, you need to buy the Macbook M1 (not 120Hz, not touch, no pen, classic laptop) AND an iPad Pro (for 120Hz screen, pen and touch and thinness and portability). And a keyboard case for your iPad Pro i guess. Two devices, thousands of dollars... that you can get with a single device, the Surface Pro 8. And the Surface basically has almost no competition, almost no one else makes a decent Windows tablet like this. So yea, I guess they are expensive, but if you think about it, maybe they still worth it
Next year this same model with a with and without a keyboard will be $600-$800 from many retailers especially during the holidays.
I really appreciate Monica's breakdown of everything here. It's the kind of review that I'd share with a relative if they asked about buying the surface pro, and I wouldn't have to worry about explaining anything else. I love it!
The surface pro 7 had a microsd slot on the back. This dissapeared on the pro 8. That's something she didn't cover.
Good comment :)
Nerd
She sounded whiny looking for things to complain about - Like the better refresh rate. If you're on the go, use Battery Saver, if your at a desk, use High Performance - nothing different from any other laptop.
Great review, dig your style Monica!
I still use and love my Surface Gen 1. The biggest feature I love is the detach, rotate and use a screen with the keyboard folded back along with a connected full size keyboard for work. Then converted back to play. Will this do that also?
How loud is the fan at full tilt and is the sleep bug (not waking up) finally fixed? I had to sell a SP4 at a huge loss due to all the bugs and awful fan noise.
SP4 is almost 5 generations old. Surely it's been fixed.
Wish there was a fanless option. :(
@@drnewbury you would need a arm chip for that

Wonderful job with your review. I do like that it has a fan.
I'm gonna wait a year and then get a bundle deal. I definitely want this machine, as nothing else on the market suits my use case even remotely as well as the surface pros.

I got this for birthday, thank you for this video. I love this laptop/tablet
Are you having any overheating issues with the pro 8 . Would you be able to do a video review on the pro 8.
A really terrific review, I am sold on the Surface 8. Very, very, very informative!
"wanted a a redesign"
I had the pro 3 and pro 7. The design is fantastic! Minimal upgrade needed. Less bezel is good but obviously the keyboard decline is optimal and you don't want that covering the screen.
The price is honestly worth it for me, since you can take handwritten notes + type/use computer-only software on the same device. That saves physical room in my bag compared to using a tablet and laptop, and also saves me a lot of paper in the long run.

@@yourapexgod2317 I just got an i7 16/256, and so far I have no overheating issues. I've heard that the Whiteboard could cause some extra heating, but OneNote is a good alternative for writing with the pen.

And for the handwritten notes, is the pen on par with Samsung and Apple's pens?
Mine comes tomorrow! So excited!
The host did an excellent job reviewing this. Great breakdown video.
No mention by Verge or MS how well Win11/SP8 work with Adobe creative suite, the biggest use case for the pen. Until tested, difficult to say whether $2k is worth it.
Great review Monica. What was it like having both USB-C ports on the same side of the device? Also, what was palm rejection like while writing with the pen? I noticed in your video that most of the writing was done with your hand off the device.
Windows palm rejection is pretty good using the 6 I could take full notes without problems.
Unless theirs new software kinks with the 120hz, new pen and windows 11 which is a possibility

Great review. Just snagged an i5, 16GB refurbished from Microsoft for under 1K with the signature keyboard & slim pen 2. Excited to use it for grad school.
I am wondering what about pen jitter in 3rd party apps like Adobe Photoshop? Is it gone? With the palm resting on the device and being on charger will it still jitter as previous generations does?
From what I read it's just as bas as on previous models. But not easy to draw any information from these "I kinda opened some tabs lol I guess it works" reviews.
Is this a new host? Nice job!

Wait until next year when Costco and other retailers will have package deals with the stylus and keyboard for sub $1k. Happens every year with the Surface Pro. I got my Surface Pro 6 (midrange model) (with keyboard) for like $800 a year after its release
100% correct. I got a Surface Pro X brand new in early 2020 for £700 on eBay and the signature keyboard with integrated stylus at £200 (discounted from £250) on the UK Microsoft store.
My biggest concern is the fan. We know that after a while the computer gets dust and starts to heat and fan goes crazy. I would buy this surface pro 8 tomorrow if it has no fan like other surface pro models with no active ventilation at all and using similar i5 intel ships.
should i get the base model pro 8 and keyboard pen bundle or the surface laptop studio? i like having a nice screen and good battery life for watching videos and web browsing. which should i go for?
I'm happy with my Surface Pro 7 which I bought a year ago. Got the i5 with 128gb storage that also comes with the keyboard for £750. In the UK, the Surface Pro 8 starts at £999 with no keyboard. The prices gone up. Yep it has a better screen but it's currently not worth the upgrade for me.
Indeed.. You Also dont have a fan in the 7 i5 model. The fan is a pain
What are the differences between the pro 7 and 8?

How is the fan noise? Pretty crucial info was left out. Like I went for the i5 the last time around with the Pro 7 since it didn’t have a fan at all, and for those tasks I’m running with it, it’s fine for the performance vs. throttling.

Amazing review! 👍
I've been using the 2018 iPad Pro as a full-time laptop replacement for just over two years now. I am looking to upgrade next year and the Surface Pro 9 or perhaps a refreshed Surface Pro X are on my list too since I might want to switch to Windows.
However, the steep price is really off-putting. Matching Apple's prices is not the way Microsoft can take some of the iPad market share, it needs to undercut it by at least a $100 or so. At least for me.
😎 we all know Microsoft gonna have sales in about 3-6 months from now for that surface pro 8 lol
"by at least $100"
That's a WEAK undercut.
Really nice review!! Personally, I don’t need such a power and I prefer a traditional 15,6” laptop. My Lenovo with its 10th gen Core i5 works like a breeze with my usual workflow (Lightroom Classic, 5-6 Edge tabs open and Apple Music the same time) and it cost me about 700€.
LOL, it's like saying "I don't like to eat Hokkaido strawberries just normal strawberries is fine" in a gourmet video
I'm watching this review on my Surface Pro 8. I bought the same model, i7 256gb with 16gb of ram. Thanks for the info of having to go to advanced settings to switch to 120hz

Great review! Thank you!
I just watched a review where they compared the i5 vs i7, both with 16GB of memory and there was very little ‘practical’ difference between the two.
Well duh... after the first few generations, the improvements get smaller and smaller
can you make a student-brakedown of the device?
How does it handle the usual productivity Taks? (image, video edditing)
And sprecial question, does it run CAD well? (NX, SolidWorks)
ill buy it after a few years when people start selling them on ebay, I still have my surface pro 3 and its still working great for what I need it for. Battery is probably going to kick the bucket in the coming years so that's going to be the time I make the switch.
I would assume the refresh rate would and should scale with power settings examples being on power saving mode it will decrease to 60Hz and on performance mode it will default to 120Hz wether you toggle those modes yourself or not.
By far the best Surface Pro 8 review I have viewed.
merh, she called a pretty intense workload watching a video.. even if its 4k that's not really intense for any intel chip past 8th gen, no thermals and graphs with comparisons to other devices in price range, its a basic review if anything. Nothing against her its just the way the Verge operates. Well edited and retains viewers attention.
Great review, so thanks for posting. Currently, I'm running an iPad Pro 12.9, 2TB, Magic Keyboard, and Pen2. Clocks out at $3k-ish' with AppleCare. Please know this is not bragging as I'm not all that impressed with it. I've been using Apple products since 1983, and over time, my allegiance to the platform is running thin. With the release of Windows 11 and the refinement of the Microsoft Surface line, I'm planning to switch camps. My last two Apple MacBook/Pros broke twice, and they didn't last as long as the older Apple MacBook series. In my view, Apple is now no better than some WinTel machines. My Dell XPS 13 (11th gen) cost $1,699 and had similar specs to the test model shown here. Pricing isn't that much different.

Regarding Surface Pro 8, any feedback on how it might run Blender (can you comfortably grease pencil / sculpt)?
Woohoo! I've been waiting for the Surface Pro X, but useable! This will probably be my next purchase.
That price tag is steep, especially for a mid-spec model, even if you skimp on an SSD and upgrade it later it is still quite a chunk of cash, but it might be worth the premium for that beautiful super light form factor. I will wait for a price drop or perhaps an future AMD version which may offer better battery life and better pricing in lieu of Thunderbolt, if it ever sees the light of day that is. But it is safe to say it is indeed the Surface Pro most of us were hoping for!
Inflation buddy lol
Would you buy it for 700$?
@@indicamoon7717 It depends on the specs, but I’d definitely consider it. An HP Envy x360 2 in 1 with the top specs is closer to $950-$1200 range, but it’s definitely a balancing act between performance, and power efficiency, battery life and the ability to run without overheating. I guess we will see what these super lightweight form factors will do with the the newer processors like Intel’s 12th gen.
The fact that it hasn't changed much in 4 years tells how far ahead it was to it's competition
Not really. SP7+ was the only decent Win tablet specs wise, and that came with a cheap pen with plenty of diagonal jitters and a screen incapable of handling 4000 levels of pressure.
It was a nice device for office work, but SP8 is the first one of this line I would suggest towards artist, for technical drawings and in general for more taxing software on the go. The much better pen and running Win11 - a much better OS for touch screen with Teams integration - also means you get a better whiteboard and writing experience.
SP always had the brilliant 2-1 for factor, only Lenovo came close to it, but cheap hw and tools not up for their tasks hold it down until now. But now we got overpriced hw as a huge counterweight!

Nice review, but I would have mentioned the fact that the pro 8 is quite a bit heavier than its predecessors, at 2 pounds (almost 900gr). Personally that’s beyond what I consider usable as a tablet (the surface pro 7 and pro X, at 100gr less were already at the limit of that)
Yikes that is quite heavy
They are leaning into this as less being a consumption style tablet you hold, but rather as a drawing/writing tablet. That's where the form factor really excels
@@Jayy997 yeah, at this point, I was thinking of an Apple ad and asking myself, what's a tablet? I don't draw, but I do annotate and at that iPad and Windows devices are similar, except if you want to hold your device, at that point even the 12.9in iPad is much lighter that this....

I want surface neo :(
Wonder if they finally fixed the issue with the hinge. Mine starting have problems last year and I ended up buying a tablet cover (or three) with built in hinges due to Microsoft not having a "fix it" policy. I'd have paid to have it fixed but there is nothing to support that. You could trade in your Surface Pro but that's about it.
Basically my Surface Pro would start to slide out of the tablet, the flexible plastic material would come out a bit and wouldn't go back in or work correctly. I ended doing a bunch of Googling on how to fix it and finally found RUclips videos on how to do that. Once you do figure out how to fix it yourself, it's still doesn't feel too secure so again a tablet cover becomes a must with a hinge to prop your Pro with. :/

Never buy the newest version of a device. You can get the previous versions for half the price and still enjoy 90% of the what the newest device is capable of.
Great, *balanced* review of a great, slightly overpriced product.
Question: can you buy a replacement SSD second-hand? Or do you have to buy it from Microsoft?
Clear and neat breakdown thanks a lot. The price is def a problem for me
Would you buy it for 750$?
Well, the Surface Pro line has always been far from wallet-friendly. I remember when I bought my first Surface device back in 2017, it cost nearly as much as this model does considering that the keyboard and the pen has been sold separately and how limited the storage they has provided since then.
And note that the standard warranty only last for 1 year, which is below par with its competitors except Apple.
My biggest concern about this device is its battery life. Despite the improvement made this year, the battery health may deteriorates rapidly like its predecessors do, some of which even swelled severely, causing issues like chassis distortion.
They don't hold well over time
Depends which country you buy it from... my device came with a 2-year warranty.
Previously only the Core i7 variant has a fan. Is this still the case? I'd happy sacrifice speed for no fan. Fans are just awful. Thanks.
Nope, it's all ruined by fans now from what I read. I guess I'll wait for SP9...
