One of the most anxiety-inducing types of online gamer I've encountered is the Accidental Stalker. Typically, they do nothing to earn this title; it's a quirk of the matchmaking system entirely. And yet, there they are, game after game, round after round. Sometimes they're on your team, sometimes the enemy. It's an eerily intimate thing. You know nothing about one another, you share nothing but the same rough time slot for game-playing, but due to the system assigning you as unanticipated besties for the last hour and a half, you're used to them. You know how they jiggle back and forth around the corner before an ambush. You know they like to spam their ult the second they get it. You can't help but wondering if they're gathering the same information about you. It's profoundly paranoid and it only gets worse the more random matches you share with this perfect stranger. You begin to wonder if it's truly, entirely random. What if something... deeper is at play here? This can't be coincidence, and yet there they are, again and again, jiggling in proximity. It's somehow weirder if you don't make the active effort to send a friend request. Your brain has already gone to the trouble of recognizing all those patterns for what it thinks is a whole new person you're going to need to be concerned about, and that doesn't go away. Next time you sit down, you find yourself looking for them. You wonder where they've gone, who they were behind the screen. But their time has passed; the system has moved on, eager to present a new crop of randos for you to figure out. They're a memory now, and all that unasked-for familiarity with it.
Definitely had this happened to me and I was the one who got sent the friend request and I did notice me and the other constantly being in the same match/team or opponents at times
My favorite personal example of “the entire family” is a game friend who has a parrot named Shmoops. Shmoops loves to interrupt, loudly, at critical moments, scaring everybody out of their wits! He also likes to talk incessantly, LOUDLY, with lots of swearing. We’ve lost a few battles because of Shmoops!

Carrying players gave them the ability to save time by starting the grind for endgame gear right away rather than wasting months grinding for earlier tiers of gear.
