I took an Amtrak train from NY to Ca this past Nov. and I was shocked and saddened with the homeless situation in all of America. It was like a tour through Homeless America. This is not only in California, this is every where in America, even the smaller cities and towns have a MASSIVE homeless situation. Tent cities in snowed and freezing below ‘0 temps, too. So embarrassing and sad, so much hopelessness, yet America sends trillions of dollars to other countries, it baffles me.
Yes, the U.S. politicians are always concerned about other countries, sending trillions of dollars. Nothing is ever done about the homeless situation here. It is totally frustrating and infuriating.
We also bail out the banks and other big businesses. What if instead of giving business all that ppe money, the government had paid people who lost their jobs due to COVID money based on their tax return

I been attacked 3 times living in East Village in the past 5 years. The last one I got hit from behind by a crazy person and was rushed to the ER in an ambulance. The cops did nothing, they issued a citation to the crazy person that attacked me from behind and the City Attorney refused to press charges. I called them for a year and they finally returned my call a day after the one year statute of limitations to file charges ended asking me how they could help me. Absolutely ridiculous! Two weeks ago I went to the post office and a crazy man comes rushing out of a camping tent chasing me with a crack pipe and a gas torch in his hand, I literally ran to the middle of the street as cops were passing by and I flagged them down, the cops waved at me, laughed, saw what was happening and kept driving. I called SDPD to report them and when they found out why I was calling they put me on hold for 2 hours on the phone and then hung up. That's SDPD for you. But you will see them taking naps while on duty around the community college and other quiet areas. Why are we paying their salaries for? BTW All three times I was attacked was in plain daylight going to the grocery store. I carry a high powered pepper spray gun concealed in a bag now every time I walk out the door, its simply not safe!

@Max Ter Rent and house prices has little to do with people living on the street. If people made enough to pay rent months/years ago, they should at least make enough to afford a monthly stay at a decent motel. Remember, there's many options in California. No one has to live on the street unless they're jobless and don't have assistance from any organization that assists homeless people.
People living on the streets is a byproduct of drug addiction, most of these folks come from out of state because California offers them free money and doesn’t require anything from them. There’s lots of places where you can go into drug-free transitional housing, none of them want to. They like living on the street…and using drugs freely. The problem is liberals in government, the state and city.

When you realize the government employees that are hired to fix this issue earn almost 6 figure salaries, it's easy to see why this homeless issue has perpetuated for this long.
This, instead of building entire bureaucracies around problems the state and feds should cut funding for failing to deal with the problem or even pass laws holding mayors criminally liable for persistent tolerance of vagrancy. The problem would disappear overnight if just those two things were implemented, I'd gamble my left nut on it.
Most homeless hav alcohol or drug addiction. A good portion have mental health issues. But thr alcohol and drug addicts won't go to treatment. They are not interested in cleaning up. What do th4y have to look forward to if they get clean? Hlth4y might have to get a job working for minimum wage taking orders from some pompey faced junior assistant 2nd shift supervisor. They don't want to work, they won't pull their weight, they're just a drag on society. They are human vermin. So th3 best thing is to run them out of town and push them into the desert. Push them into Brawleey, Plaster City, Holtsville, etc. They can camp out in th4 blistering desert all they want. They want to live like animals, push them out to live loke animals. Don't make working people have to suffer with them parasites. I've dealt with them for 20 years as a prosecutor. Helping them don't work. They need to be shoved off thr planets edge.

I was poor and scared growing up. My parents were the paycheck-to-paycheck type. I saved up so much of my low income that I'm now well off. This country is not one big lie. Stop making bad decisions. Stop smoking and drinking and having kids until you're finances are in order. I also see "broke" people with new cars and new iphones. Bad decisions will keep you broke.
My Dad was a psychiatrist for the County back when they closed the mental wards. Prisons were full so many borderline violent offenders were released into the public. Dad predicted a huge rise in homelessness, crime and assaults and the change started immediately. The lack of enforcement allowed tents, then structures, couches, BBQs leading to fires, rats, feces and crime. It was considered inhumane to keep those suffering from mental illness confined against their will but this is not humane either. Our city needs a large urban campground. Ours are small, always full and cost $40 a night. I've been telling the Mayor about the abandoned Hunte Pkwy golf course. It's ready made with nice spots for customers on the greens in front and a big hidden valley behind that was the driving range. It could be a low/no cost tent area with showers, soup kitchen and internet access to social services. Have a shuttle bus to transit stations. If we say no camping on streets and parks there's got to be a legal solution.
I don't know what to say, having experienced mental illness from a prior family member and now someone close to me, it's tough to see them locked up, they seem to always have some very good qualities, but their Dark Side can be extremely dangerous and destructive

I grew up in San Diego and lived back east during grad school and my first job before moving to Austin in 2002. Austin reminded me of San Diego back in the late 70s/80s and it felt like Nirvana here. Not anymore. First, the requisite spike in property values and cost of living (a lot of Californians sold up and moved here)... and then the inevitable spike in homelessness and then the sharp rise in crime. Austin is a shadow of its former self. Horrible shame about San Diego... this is going to be the reality in every city in the US before long.
The nonprofits do not spend money on the homeless. All of the federal funds that they get is either funneled into unnecessary expenses or written off as an expense that it's not really used for. The next time you're confused about this problem you can refer back here.
I totally agree. A democrat gets a buddy to open a non profit. Most of the money goes to running the place while just a little goes to the homeless. Then the person who got rich running the non profit gives money to their favorite politicians next election and it's a cycle of corruption. No democrat is going to solve this problem. They make too much from this scam.
BINGO! The only thing "nonprofit" about a nonprofit is the corporation itself. There's big money, a free car, and many other perks for the already wealthy CEO running the nonprofit. And....like any other business, the main concern is growing their customer base. Who in their right mind would want to solve the problem and lose their financial windfall.
High rents are only a minor contribution to the homeless problem. 180 people were offered shelter vouchers. Only 8 took them up on their off. That something like 5%. Problem is you could every one of these folks a place to live and one year from now you would have a whole new batch of homeless.
They treat people in shelters like they are all murderers that are absolutely crazy as well as child molesters and like your filthy and diseased. And although many of them are actually that way not all homeless people that go to a shelter are that way but all of them are treated that way by the staff the staff treats the homeless people in the shelter's like absolute dirt. So I can see why someone would rather live in their car or in a trailer rather than go to a homeless shelter. The first thing they do when you go to a homeless shelter is they take all of your possessions away from you including your phone claiming that it could be written with bed bugs so they put your belongings in a freezer for 24 hours. After that they store your belongings in a room that you cannot access without their permission and they watch you as if you're going to steal something. You are not allowed to have your belongings with you they are kept in a separate room. This includes your phone. They also lock the bathrooms in the middle of the day for 2 hours claiming that they're cleaning them.
Voice of Rasin That is because it's backwards, and also pepper m is right. You can't fix this with a temporary bandaid. You have to stop corporations and rich people from buying politicians so they do what WE need. Did you know that since Regan, the people's voice has been ignored? The rich get richer, and the rest get poorer through no fault of their own. I think about my parents having 5 kids on one income and living a middle class lifestyle including many trips to Disney, and camping and owning a boat. Now two incomes with no kids can't have that lifestyle. Stop blaming the homeless, and put the blame where it belongs: The Supreme Court for passing Citizen's United which allowed rich people to buy politicians away from the people. Get your head out of the sand.
We moved out of the East County of San Diego almost 5 years ago to another state. It saddens me to to see this situation growing. My heart goes out to the REAL homeless people out there who have illnesses and nowhere to live. However, not all are this way. The majority of them aren't homeless or have illnesses. They just check out of society and choose to live this way. Many of them just want to be free of paying rent and bills or pay child support or wanted criminals. Many young women that are out there have children and abandon their children with family members to go live on the streets because they don't want to have responsibilities. Many of them are drug addicts who don't care about where they live, they just want to be near where their next high is easy to get. Many have been offered vouchers to go stay at motels and they refuse it. Many of them like this lifestyle and they have no plans to get off the streets. The worst part of this all is that they are dirty, throwing trash everywhere they go. They have no respect for others. They deal drugs, poop on the streets, do drugs right out in the open, and basically do not care what others think or say about them. It is out of control and someone needs to do something about it ASAP. Our beautiful cities in California are being destroyed right in front of our eyes! It's is sad and at the same time a bad sight to see. There should be laws against living on the streets. And if there are laws, why aren't they being enforced? Way back in the days most people had self-respect and dignity and were ashamed of being homeless and didn't want others to see them or hear of them being homeless. Now, it's become a trend to be living on the streets.

@@hellofriends1516 Agreed, though the “genuinely homeless “ actually use the resources available and transition back into housing. That’s unfortunately not the vast majority
It’s the culmination of a decade”s long problem where federally subsidized residential rehab centers started cropping up like weeds in the coastal counties in California. Patients were being flown in from out-of-state so these facilities could claim the funding. When the funding for any particular patient expired, they were released without any means of returning home and ended up on our streets, destitute and still struggling with drug addiction. The state is at fault for allowing so many facilities to crop up despite city and county resistance to these facilities. And the federal program that funded these now defunct treatment facilities is at fault for failing to stop the misuse of those funds. It’s a human disaster that requires multiple levels of government to correct. The first step is getting these chemically dependent homeless persons to retiring or defunct military bases where federal resources can be allocated to alleviate the suffering and get them back to their home state where their families can provide a better network of support than the street.
You say that the government caused the problem, and I agree. But why then is it that you and so many others think that the solution is for the government to fix it?! We need to go back to being a people who don’t turn to the government to run our lives. It’s probably too late for that though. We are Rome towards the end.
@@jiujitsustudent604 The easiest government fix is to stop funding these facilities by how many patients they admit. Funding should be based on outcomes, not addmissions. This has a self regulating effect. If you want positive outcomes, then you have to be more selective about who you admit. The easy patients will be picked and treated first. And only the most successful programs can afford to take on the more challenging patients, which is as it should be. Positive outcomes mean that patients are not only off drugs, but functioning at a job with means to provide for themselves. It also means the treatment facility is more invested in the patient's long term prospects, which include housing and employment. Treatment facilities that have no interest in making a long term commitment need not apply and will disappear to their community's delight.

Remember to thank Ronald Reagan, he emptied the insane asylums onto the streets of the inner cities in CA, since his voting base was rural. Support systems have been overburdened ever since.
A homeless guy got really aggressive with me when I was getting off the trolley last. The guy started to follow me because I told me I haven't carried any money in at least 4 years when he asked for some change. While walking around the corner of a building I waited for him and when I saw him I kicked him in knee as hard as I could with steel toe boots. He went down yelling in pain and swearing. I told him next time it will be worse.
If the police aren't doing anything about it, we have to take matters into our own hands. Homeless are being handed money but then stalking & assaulting hard working people. Homeless throwing scourching hot coffee on shop employees badly scarring them for life, but then no consequences for the homeless. This needs to change. The law/government isn't doing anything besides making the homeless more comfortable.
Ironically these people never had a problem with this before when the homeless population knew to stay in poor neighborhoods. Now that they’re at their doorsteps, SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE!!! As long as we keep cutting taxes for the wealthy and corporations, cutting social programs, even small things like music programs from schools, while Bezos and Friends keep filling their pockets this problem will only get bigger.
Why do people like you always complain or mention Bezos? You talk about "filling their pockets" but REFUSE to talk about the POLITICIANS who take money from the people who ACTUALLY work.
So it's corporations fault huh? Not the wasteful spending of the democrats? 30 billion was spent on the homeleess issue by Newsom and 14 billion more is going to be spent. They got 115 units built for over $600,000 per unit. Seems like corruption to me. The democrats don't want the issue fixed because it's how they make easy money. How about the democrats stop wasting money on crap we don't need. Their corruption is massive. You do notice how they are doing just fine money wise in this inflation right?
As a NYC resident who knows all too well about homelessness problem, getting worse because many are mentally ill or with substance abuse problems, we have problems with some comitting violent criminal acts, can tell you not much will change, there isn't the will by leaders to change it.
few are mentally ill. They are likely stoned when you encounter them. 80% stoned hiding behind 20% ill. The handouts and squatting enable them to be homeless. you are 180 degrees out of phase.
I live in the East village and experience this every day. When COVID hit it really did get bad and it’s been like that ever since. For the past two years, I tried to bring attention to this issue as well. It’s exhausting and very time confusing. One of the major barriers to solving this problem is when the city tries to enforce they get sued by homeless advocacy groups. It’s very difficult to find a common solution that will work for everyone. I do think that mental facilities should be a requirement for those that needed and the government will need to step up and determine how to address individuals who aren’t mentally able to make a decision for themselves.
IMHO the best solution to this problem is to export them to "ghost towns" and let them figure it out. Give them the bare minimum necessities to restart their lives and rebuild these ghost towns and create farm land and fix up old homes. Once they do that theyd be contributing back to society while not making a city look disgusting and if they cant do that and end up dying from lack of effort then thats on them. If they do manage to get a mini society functioning they can sell farm goods for money to bring in more things to their towns. Also if theyre in the middle of nowhere where would they get drugs? theyd end up getting clean bettering their lives.
You’re inconvenienced by people who don’t have homes? Considering the rent you must pay in the East village it’s hard to drum up sympathy for you, not that you explicitly asked for it
Then don't vote Republican because they destroyed this State's capacity to do just that in the 80s. And to add insult to injury; in the 90s they gave the non profit treatment money to Churches and religious groups that used to go to trained and educated professionals.
Years ago, I used to work in a psychiatric facility. When Reagan closed many mental hospitals, it was sad. Later on, as I drove through downtown, running my errands I'd see many of our former patients on the streets. Having worked there,my heart would break, when young people came there. Some had fried their brains, I assumed. There was a girl, I recall from my elementary school, when I was a kid. I didn't know her personally, but recall seeing her in school. So sad.
100 years ago, During the height of the great depression, Many Americans were lining up for bread and soup. There are many pictures of that. There were shanty towns but there were not block after block of mentally ill people defecating on the sidewalks. It took drugs and an over reliance on government handouts to get to this level. This is worse than most third world countries.
@@oncho1960 Yes he closed a lot of mental hospitals which is part of the reason why we have so many mentally ill out in the streets. His administration did good in other areas but in this area he screwed up and now we are seeing the results of his policy.
Yes. I noticed the same thing. Cutting the funding seemed like an acceptable thing to do- but this is what came if it. Most of these homeless people can never work.
Why didn't you help them when they were your patients ? You can't house mentally ill people forever . They obviously didn't get help from your facility . Open borders , and not enforcing laws isn't helping the homeless or taxpaying citizens .Allowing mentally ill people to loot , steal and bring drugs and bring violence into neighborhoods where people are raising families is only going to build resentment and frustration which will make the situation worse. Most of this is drug related and our open border policies are a big part of the problem !
@@jasongates- both parties are thieves but one side is intentionally destroying America and every single thing democrats have done in recent years is bad for every American. I am intelligent enough to understand reality. Thats something democrat voters are unable to do. Open your eyes. Tell me one thing any democrat has done that is good for America? Just one thing? Open borders? Killing oil and gas? Putting people out of work causing inflation like we have never seen? Is this good? Is your life better now than it was a year ago? Is Biden restarting the iran nuclear deal good for you? Democrat politicians Cleary do not work for Americans and they have even said so.
A nation that doesn't care about their citizens living in the street won't care about their citizens living in a house, either (unless the house is a mansion, of course).
@@jacobmulligan5962 not true, San Diego like the other big California cities has always been a top destination for homeless. Social services and sunny weather will do that. The difference is they used to keep them limited to east village and the like, now as part of their “equity” program or some bs they let them camp up where they please
That’s a great question! I remember when democrats would push and vote for laws that help the unprivileged Americans who are stereotypes of a minority and republicans who were against these programs used them for their states because they’re highly segregated in class and ethnicity and now these so called legit programs are so confusing with bureaucratic red tape that you have to be foreign born in order to receive the benefit’s.
@@Tepaneca that’s a valid answer, and I’d imagine that there’s some truth to it. If I was comfortable at the bottom I’d flee to a warm weather blue state and let the state subsidize my existence (no shade). I think the “middle class” has a decision to make: are we gonna continue to pay “blue state” taxes and participate in subsidizing the less fortunate or are we gonna bet on ourselves and flee to red states and pursue a thriving outcome?
@@jonathandow684 that makes sense that democrats started the policies and made it so comfortable to be at the bottom that people stayed there and that class of people grew. They incentivized the behavior. Maybe being at the bottom of society isn’t as rewarding in red states as it is in blue states?
This is a substance abuse issue and a mental health issue. It has nothing to do with being poor. The problem is the city doesn’t want to enforce certain laws because it may violate a federal law that you can’t take down encampments unless you give the homeless proper housing. On top of that, statewide though a ballot initiative we legalized personal drug use with the intent to keep drug addicts out of jail but with legalization we didn’t force people to get treatment so now we have open drug markets. The way to fix this is to force another ballot initiative that requires mandatory rehabilitation and mental health services through state conservatorship. Also we need to build temporary and permanent homeless shelters away from major urban cities and suburban areas like in the desert and do forced relocation for non compliant people. If you just let people stay and camp and do drugs or whatever they want then no one is encouraged to change.
ABSOLUTELY 💯 AGREE. BRILLIANTLY SAID. Programmes like the housing first policy are an out rage where they are given accommodation but don't have to do anything. In regards to their drug or mental problems. That policy should be abolished. I ABSOLUTELY love all your ideas!!!
We were there recently for a trip and stayed at the Hilton on the bay ,it was horrible to see all the trash and drug addicts and the mentally ill wandering the streets and the trash . I would advise going somewhere else until they fix this issue !
I use to live in California it has ALWAYS been a state where they don't offer a lot a State help and have ALWAYS been out of touch of reality so far how the average American lives and what they can afford. At this time due to those two things this is the outcome and unfortunately it's not going to get any better only because California is truly out of touch and to far gone.
I know the entertainment in Cali is fun but when it comes to housing and rent is ridiculous… people and society are the things expensive in San Diego like it’s not fair and making people leave the state or become homeless because of no recourse or any help to support themselves and living cost. Like shouldn’t California should be cheap cause it was owned by Mexico in the past .
@@Brett1997 I lived in San Diego as a kid in the early 80s and my parents were able to buy a duplex 3 bedroom in south bay area new for $73,000! The average price of a single family home was about $150k. Since then things have skyrocketed and priced out the average middle class family.
Are the freeways still old and ragged from the 60’s? California charges a state income tax but doesn’t do anything with the money and Nevada doesn’t charge a state income tax and is always under construction.
Father Joe's gets a ton of money from every lunch being served. Mike McConnell also is worth I believe $2 million dollars. I'll have to look that up to make sure. But I know he can afford to live in Del Mar or La Jolla with no problem. And I know they wouldn't want it to stop or severely reduce.
A compassionate approach would be either open up more jails and/or mental institutions like we had 50 years ago. There, these vagrants will be off recreational drugs and alcohol. They would receive clean drinking water, good food, showers, a clean bed, medical/mental care and not living on the streets where they will eventually die face down in the gutter. Crime will also reduce by not having police, fire, and paramedics responding every few minutes.
We have PLENTY of facilities Good try blaming Reagan when Ds have been running this state for decades. The issue is, current leadership. We can't arrest drug addicts and we can't force sick people into treatment because "they have rights" Nothing from 50 years ago makes a damn bit of difference now. Do you know how many psychiatric beds are available in SD? I bet more then you know
@@Lunnalee100 Then that's where these vagrants belong. Available? Perhaps. Actually using them? No. $1 Billion from taxpayers in L.A. spent flushed down the toilet recently. Reagan was only part of it. Closing down mental institutions started with JFK. This political football was bounced from Federal to State and back for many years. Since you think Democrats do better, why aren't you blaming Governor Gavin "Pretty Boy" Newsom instead of just blaming someone 40 years ago? Democrats don't seem to take charge and do something constructive. All they do is monitor, discuss, or tear down.
This city is dealing with a large homeless population, who are thugs and bullies, and don't care about themselves or this city. If these fools want to be treated humanly, then, I suggest, they begin acting like a human being. First off, clean up after yourself.
Very privileged statement from someone who like most Americans is only a couple paychecks from homelessness urself ... Don't expect anyone to treat u like a human if u hit hard times or face mental health issues ... U must think Ur exempt
I live in a small suburb in SoCal. There was never homeless encampments before covid. Now they are both under the freeway near me, but literally just a block away. The city “cleans up” the area and less than 12 hrs later they are back up. I moved here because it was a small, quiet, safe neighborhood. Not anymore. It is not just a city issue anymore.
You think drug addicts/mentally it’ll just showed up after Covid ? No the drug issue has worsened over the years.majority of homeless are there because they refuse to take accountability in their lives not because of effects from Covid
I live at least a 12 hour drive away in Northern California and it is just as bad here. Trash, human waste, needles, all on the streets, bike paths, and parks.
The average rent for an apartment in SD is $2,610. Landlords require proof of income 3.5 x the rent. You would have to make over $109,000 a year to get one. Now that we've done the math, my friends, why do you think people are living on the street?
Alcoholism, drug addiction, mental illness, no job, and hundreds of state, federal and local programs that reward them with even the needles they use to inject themselves with illegal drugs that they always have the money to buy.
it will only get worse. They already imported 60k illegals and rented up a ton of apartment complexes to house them, practically pricing citizens out of rent.
Because people choose to live on the street. Nearly all of the homeless don't want a job, mental health treatment, and they certainly don't want to follow the rules. San Diego will remain expensive as long as people keep purchasing real estate there and touring the city.
Because 40 years ago Ronald Reagan and the ACLU made sure the asylums and mental hospitals couldn't keep them in. Simple answer. When I see Hispanic illegals at Home Depot lining up for work (and getting it) and living in apartments and houses in the neighborhood (and paying the rent), and white and black American homeless living on the street right NEXT to the Home Depot, I ask myself, who do I want for my neighbor???
I was homeless back in 2019 one of the shelters I was at did not help one bit we used to get lots of clothes donations and they never gave us any there was a mom with a new born who had no clothes what so ever and when she asked for baby clothes they never gave her any I happened to start working where the donations come in from and took a bunch of baby clothes and bottles for her since the shelter didn't wanna do it themselves I worked as a client there for at least close the 30 hours a week sometimes more and only got paid about 20 dollars after 2 weeks of working and yall like to say homeless people are lazy when you have no idea what goes on In shelters
Shelters aren't good things. Because you're homeless, they treat you quite badly. I was in one once. The only reason they weren't (overly) cruel towards me was because I had no interest in drinking or drugs so they didn't know what to do with me.
Once you become homeless it's as if you lose your humanity. No one will hire you and if you have a job you're most likely to lose it since you no longer have an adequate place to shower or sleep.
High rent, inflation, $15 minimum wage which is totally ridiculous and you will be replaced with robots, finding anything and everything to tax us over when we pay enough! This homeless problem is literally everywhere! I understand some of those people are only homeless because they couldn’t keep up with the ridiculous prices for rent but the majority of homeless people are either mentally ill (most likely from drugs), addicted to drugs or alcohol or just don’t want to be in a place where they aren’t free to do their bad habits. Where are all of our tax dollars going?? You take so much from us and yet you do nothing but put hard working peoples money into your own pocket!
"This homeless problem is literally everywhere! " Not really, Calif. is by far the worst we have over 162,000 homeless compared to a place like Utah 3000, This stuff isn't rocket science, most homeless want to live this life, they get money from the government, and they can hang out and get high all-day with there drug addict friends.
⬆️ there's your holdup on fixing this. No one wants to see them but when efforts are made the same complainers are worried about "free hand outs". So nothing gets solved. It's a revolving door.
We live in the middle of nowhere; in the Mojave desert! And there's loads of home less people out here. And its best to stay away from them. It's not safe.
Same thing going on in NYC. Every morning on my way to work, seeing filled syringes and spoons is the norm. The safe houses for drug addicts to 'use' Is not helping. Untreated mentally ill people are every other person you dodge to walk past. On the trains, in your neighborhood because of the shelters put in place...everywhere. There is an obvious epidemic from city to city.
That is so sad to see. I live in canada myself and was homeless myself for 4 years. It wasnt until i came to the city of kingston did i finally find a really good, honest working system for homeless people. They had an amazing shelter in a brand new building, clean beds, excellent food and proper supports that helped me go from living outside to an apartment now affordable on fixed income. I struggle with alcohol addiction myself and it wasnt easy when i would be taken to the roughest shelters that were unisex, there were alot of mean people who were hardcore druggies, even witnessed overdoses happening, to hearing fights between males and females or couples swearing at eeach other that i could not stand to stay another day at those shelters, the one in kingston saved me. I still drink but at least in the comfort of my own home now and without stealing to fuel my addiction. I really hope they get the help they really need, addiction and mental health are huge contributors to homelessness and i know because i was one
I am happy to hear that you managed to leave the streets. Hopefully, one day soon, you'll be able to kick the alcohol habit. Always remain strong, positive, confident, and treat others like you would expect them to treat you. Good things will eventually happen to you. Good luck!!!
People who live in East village are part of the homeless problem Downtown! I'm old enough to remember when that area had older hotels (that were transformed into SROs) and charged people only $500 a month for their rooms. There also were plenty of group homes, substance abuse centers and other social services in the area. When Petco stadium got the green light, owners were forced to sell to make way for expensive high-rises now known as East Village . This displaced a lot of people on fixed incomes and those that couldn't move elsewhere ended up on the streets. So all of you that have relocated from the San Diego suburbs to live the hipster life in Downtown San Diego, will have to keep on dealing with the people you have displaced. They were here before you.
There are answers to this problem. But politicians need the homeless. When they run for office, they can always claim they are going to starts some program, it will cost a fortune and then the problem will be worse. Rinse repeat.
The same with power. A trash to electricity plant would reduce the cost of electricity, but the city receives more largess by restrictions on alternatives.

The problem is, nobody has been able to honestly define what "Doing something about the homeless" really means. Does it mean providing housing and food to get them off the streets? Does it mean arresting and evicting the homeless, shipping them off to parts unknown so we don't have to look at them? Does it mean building internment camps out in the desert with forced labor to make them earn their keep? Can their be implementation of a new WPA kind of program to provide meaningful work to those that are willing and able to help solve public infrastructure issues or meet other needs? Anyone can easily identify there's a problem with homelessness and demand "Something" be done about it, but what?
I’ve carefully read through the comments listed here, and no one is mentioning the core reasons for this social breakdown. Some suggestions would be effective, but would take systems-change to implement, and given American political divisions (Dem vs Rep) I don’t think it could be sustainable. First and foremost: the capitalist system doesn’t work for the majority of humanity. The fact the top richest Americans have increased their wealth by 20x-200x in two pandemic years, while personal wealth for the rest of humanity has plummeted, says it all. Second: the number one cause of “mental disorders” in men is the military industrial complex, which destroys young men who are deployed to wars. Many Iraqi and Afghan vets are disturbed, and PTSD shuts down the ability to personally pick one’s self up. This is a fact which isn’t even discussed. Third: Brain injuries have been lumped as mental illnesses by most municipalities and states, and the services and medications they provide worsen brain injuries and the possibility of healing. Those people need customized cognitive therapy, and help to survive because brain injuries sometimes don’t rehabilitate. Forth: mental illnesses are complex, from passive aggressive behaviors by people wrongly incarcerated to full-on schizophrenia. This is where evaluations must be done by knowledgeable professionals, who can effectively maneuver through the master manipulative personalities of some of the homeless. So many homeless men are just angry that they couldn’t make it in the system, or were “wrongly” accused of a crime, or who’s lives were ruined from the war machine this country has become. Some are seriously ill from an accident or mental illnesses. Some are drug addicts and fell through the cracks. Some are alcoholics and don’t want to quit. So you can see this has many layers of breakdown.
@@uslee19 @L The capitalist system is the main reason why we have social media, food companies, electronics, large amount of GDP, and so much more. Capitalism may not work for most of humanity because almost all of them make stupid decisions that could make it extremely difficult for them to become rich. Main reason why the top richest Americans had their wealth increased is because me, you, and others keep on purchasing their products. Try not to shop at any grocery store owned by a rich person, take a big break from social media, and quit purchasing Wi-Fi that is also owned by a rich person. Then, those people will stop getting richer. Everything else you said is agreeable.
I come all the way from Escondido to watch the Padres at Petco park. When I tailgate in the parking lot I'm always blown away when I see how bad the homeless problem is in downtown.
Your are totally right, I spoke to some home less and the police in laguna beach, they told me that they have a net work from all over the country. Their know what time of the year to get from Florida to California and in-between from the different states. Not only that but in california they have laws that helps them. The big problem is a lot of the homeless don't want help, they like living on the streets. Once a friend of mine came down to laguna beach to visit, walking down on the board walk. He says to me, there right on the edge of the beach by the ⚾ baseball court. Right to the right side is a lawn with grass, my friend says look at this. I said yes ,they have there free ocean front condo for free when other in the city spend million on a house or condo for a ocean view. That person that wrote that is correct. I just wonder, and I try to have compassion for all, but when you are living on the street in a community and refuse the help offered, maybe at that point it's time for serious jail. Because honestly that kind of isolation and time to recover is what they need. They almost need to be locked up so they don't die from their addictions. Or maybe that's what they want. I really have no idea. It's a tough issue to solve.
Some commit crimes just so they will be arrested. That way, they at least have a roof over their head and a meal each day. Because it's such a desperate situation, and those who stoop to committing crimes just to get arrested have, or feel like they have no other option. But, I don't think blanket arresting is the solution, either. You don't want to be on the street, but you also don't want to be in jail. I wonder what happens for some to refuse help. I wonder how many are truly addicted. I'd say only a few actually want to be homeless or dead. It IS a touch situation.
Ukraine borders are more important than United States borders. So you can see how this could be a non-issue for some of our important leaders. Obey Propaganda.

Help those that will accept it but for the bums that like this life, get out the fire hoses, the bulldozers and dump trucks and start clearing the streets and parks.
My family from Mexico laugh at homeless people here in the United States because they're so entitled but my mom said she came the USA homeless and within a week she got a job in agriculture working 60 hours at 100 degrees and within a month got a car and apartment. 😂 She also said in Mexico the homeless have jobs because they have to work or die
Wouldn’t be surprised if Comic-Con International in SD makes a return this year and the mayor, by brute force, moves homeless out during that time like they did with the homeless at LA’s Super Bowl.
Comic Con is coming I believe in July. The homeless have been moved out of the SD Convention Center a long time now.( sometime before April or May of last year) I did hear about the L.A. Super Bowl one.

It can buy a bed, but not a good night's sleep; a dog, but not the wag in it's tail; food, but not an appetite. We can't take money with us when we die, yet the top charities are museums, hospitals, and universities. Stanford was founded by a rail baron. Duke was founded by a tobacco heiress. Hershey's chocolate supports a school that has a $7 billion bank account. Harvard University also has a $7 billion bank account.
@Sandra Radhay BILLIONAIRES DON'T HAVE TO HELP THE HOMELESS. PLEASE SHARE YOUR HOME AND YOUR BANK ACCOUNT WITH A HOMELESS STRANGER BECAUSE ONCE YOU LEAVE THIS EARTH YOU CAN'T TAKE THOSE THINGS WITH YOU. See how stupid your comment sounds? @@ozzierabbit587 Yeah, like North Korea. Every time when someone mentions something about other countries' lack or small portion of homelessness, a stupid American shows up and starts talking about communism. Housing and medical care for mentally ill and addicts are basic human rights and nobody even talks about it. But for the regular Joe, tent cities in the actual cities are something perfectly normal. What a sad and pathetic country...
It's only going to get worse. Rent is up by double digits % in every state from 2020 - 2022. There are a lot of people who are closer to homeless than one would think. I've worked at the same place for over 5 years now. I started making $10/hr in 2016 to making literally over double that in at $21.50/hr and it's still a struggle just to get by. Most people I know where I live go from paycheck to paycheck. My rent went from $750/mo to $950/mo for just a small two bedroom apartment and that's actually cheap as I'm in Pennsylvania right now. I lived close to Fort Myers and the same apartment I have here would be close to $1400/mo there. I barely make over $2100 a month after my insurance and taxes come out, 401k etc. With my car/phone/utilities I have around $1500 worth of bills per month. So if you do the math I have a a about $600-$700 a month extra after my bills. That's not counting food, gas etc and I have a six year old. I would never give up but I understand completely the people who just saw fuck it. It's sad actually.
I'm not trying to be rude, but why do poor people bring a child into their world if they're barely scraping by? Now the working class taxpayers have to give you money. Maybe we can't afford your child either.

I don't get food stamps, you need to make like 12/hr or less for them I think but it might differ state to state. In Pennsylvania where I live I'm pretty sure that's how it is.
Also I make a shade under 45k/yr and you're calling me poor. That's part of the problem. 45k/yr living in a modest 2 bedroom apartment shouldn't be considered poor. That's crazy.

When we have over 17.1 million homes sitting empty all over the United States, rents increases without increases in salary and a minimum wage that hasn't changed since the early 90s, how do you expect them to survive or become independent? When our broken medical systems is not able to properly take care of these people, how do you expect them to manage their illness? We have money for everyone else around the globe except the American people, this is completely unacceptable.
Over 17 million homes wouldn't be empty if all adults had a job and made smart financial decisions. Problem is people nowadays are not being informed on financial literacy. Not only that, but many who live on the street refuse to get help. Are we supposed to force them into medical treatment?
This problem won't go away, it will only get worse. When I was younger less than 1% of the people had 41% of the money, now they have 50% . What happens when less than 1% have acquired 70% of the money? Also factory workers made 40% more ( adjusted for inflation) in the 80's.
A lot of those homeless aren't even from san diego. They come from other states and cities in the country. The weather is good and they coddle them here. They have the license to do whatever they want. Cops dont want to deal w them and they cant pay any fines. The cops dont even want to touch them. They make a mess and leave feces and needles wherever they want. I know thats not all of the homeless and i know not every homeless is a bum. Im speaking of the selfish, lazy, entitled, thieving, careless individuals that even burned bridges w their families that even they dont help them.
I was on the street in san diego county for 2 years and hanged out in downtown. They go where the drugs are. They don't want shelter, because shelter places usually have rules including no drugs or alcohol, and since southern california has really good weather, its easy to survive outside. I know it might be inhumane but if you want them inside instead of outside, let them fill up a huge warehouse where they can set up their tents and do their drugs. All you need is a few security guards and a cleaning crew. Its the only way to get them off the street and it'll be cheaper for the city.
I guarantee if you did that, the security would end up murdered or severely injured, the warehouse would be absolute filthy chaos, and from them using drugs and flame/cooking with fire, the warehouse will just end up on fire 🔥 and tax payers will have to pay for the fire department putting it out, and for workers to come clean up the burnt mess
@@ozzierabbit587 Thank you for posting Mr. Original. To answer your question, admittedly I don't know the solution but my point is more about the hypocrisy that Gavin and others show towards them. Agreed. They can turn the old library can be turned into something! That library has been closed for over 10 years. They need to turn it into something. I get that some people like being homeless and like being on the street, but the mentally ill need a state hospital program to assist them. The city is doing bare minimum.
Another consideration is that everytime the government proposes anything, the rights group get all up in arms and file lawsuits saying they go against the homeless people's civil liberties. They apparently believe that the rights of a relative few outweigh the rights of the entire rest of the population. They insist that throwing even more money into programs that have already proven to be ineffective is the way to go-because, y'know, you don't want to disturb a homeless person's right to live however they want.
Stop calling it the "homeless problem" because it really is an issue of the "High Rent problem". And forget living in a shelter if you have a pet, like I do. San Diego and Los Angeles have "gentrified" neighborhoods and built new apartments and condos for people earning a 6-figure income, leaving behind those that are still working for a bit over minimum wage, like cashiers, customer service reps, retail reps and so forth. Where are THEY going to live? Even for us teachers, earning over $20 an hour and just under the Full-time hours to be considered for health benefits, cannot afford to live in San Diego and Los Angeles. WE have to live across the border, in Tijuana, which is the only affordable option we have. It's either that, or the streets.
Omg! This is America now, I hope the government will have a sustainable solution for everybody...instead of supporting wars to other countries why not help their own population...

And sent 300 million to Ukraine.
You are correct. These 'non-profits' are a major scam.
@@georgeyoes3130 I think the politicians are profiting from them. This is why the problem will not be solved. Why solve it when they make money on it?

Now, it's become a trend to be living on the streets.

@@hellofriends1516 Agreed, though the “genuinely homeless “ actually use the resources available and transition back into housing. That’s unfortunately not the vast majority
A drug and Democrats problem
Rehab is over 90% in effective and that is for people that want to be there so clearly rehab is not a solution of any kind.
OCFilm- Dream on
You say that the government caused the problem, and I agree.

The main problem here
Is that most homeless in the street. Are young
With mental issues. Due to over use drugs
😁😵😵😬
IMHO the best solution to this problem is to export them to "ghost towns" and let them figure it out. Give them the bare minimum necessities to restart their lives and rebuild these ghost towns and create farm land and fix up old homes. Once they do that theyd be contributing back to society while not making a city look disgusting and if they cant do that and end up dying from lack of effort then thats on them. If they do manage to get a mini society functioning they can sell farm goods for money to bring in more things to their towns.
Also if theyre in the middle of nowhere where would they get drugs? theyd end up getting clean bettering their lives.

Gavin Newsom sure doesn't help ether
@@Brett1997 I lived in San Diego as a kid in the early 80s and my parents were able to buy a duplex 3 bedroom in south bay area new for $73,000! The average price of a single family home was about $150k. Since then things have skyrocketed and priced out the average middle class family.
Are the freeways still old and ragged from the 60’s? California charges a state income tax but doesn’t do anything with the money and Nevada doesn’t charge a state income tax and is always under construction.
All the homeless losers are drug addicts you idiot.
Anytime someone wants to do something about the homeless problem, there are "homeless advocates" that refuse or challenges the change.

They would receive clean drinking water,
good food, showers, a clean bed, medical/mental care and not living on the streets where they will eventually
die face down in the gutter. Crime will also reduce by not having police, fire, and paramedics responding every
few minutes.
We have PLENTY of facilities
Good try blaming Reagan when Ds have been running this state for decades.
The issue is, current leadership. We can't arrest drug addicts and we can't force sick people into treatment because "they have rights"
Nothing from 50 years ago makes a damn bit of difference now.

Drug addicts lie all the time
I live in a small suburb in SoCal.
They’re gonna creep into your home. Soon.
City police should walk through every day with drug sniffing dogs and confiscate the illegal drugs.
Covid allegedly puts people in the ground, not out on the street.
Make some examples.
Well that’s when you leave SD lol are you insinuating they absolutely NEED to live in San Diego ?
No one will hire you and if you have a job you're most likely to lose it since you no longer have an adequate place to shower or sleep.
you are lazy. It is Your problem. Deal with it and stop mooching.

There is an obvious epidemic from city to city.
i'm surprised the US govt hasn't blamed this on China yet
What a loser

Gentrification is a problem.
Good point

@@uslee19 @L
The capitalist system is the main reason why we have social media, food companies, electronics, large amount of GDP, and so much more.

@@kellyallen8528 I worked two jobs for 30 years and saved every penny to get out of poverty. It does take hard work. Good on you for taking your nephew in as your own. If you claim your son then you could get a huge tax deduction and/or a big refund at the end of the year. Good luck and work hard, keep your head up and seek God. It will all get better.
Sad!! I never felt safe Downtown and I would never go there now. El Cajon has their own skid row popping up over near the old police station. I'm sorry but the way things are going with gas, inflation on food, housing, etc. it's just getting worse. This is disturbing times. We shut down the country and now they're sucking us dry. Wtf?! 😣😣😣😣
Downtown San Diego is among one of the safest downtowns in America having traveled to 48 of the states, but the homeless issue is definitely out of hand. Instead of being afraid and spreading that mentality go down and talk to some of people and hand out some lunches if you can...you’d be surprised that they are HUMAN just like you ❤️
@@taylorparker8912Just now read this comment. Wow. Um thanks for coming to judge. I wasn't bad mouthing them and I have handed out sandwiches AND leftovers from a restaurant before thank you, I always will try to hand someone some water or something. I've just had a sense of not being safe. 👍🏼✌🏼Also, handing people meals doesn't help the situation, maybe for a moment. One last thought, are you female? Because that could explain safety for you vs me.

Exactamundo!!! That’s the problem 1000%
Late stage capitalism is feudalism
A lot of those homeless aren't even from san diego. They come from other states and cities in the country. The weather is good and they coddle them here. They have the license to do whatever they want. Cops dont want to deal w them and they cant pay any fines. The cops dont even want to touch them. They make a mess and leave feces and needles wherever they want. I know thats not all of the homeless and i know not every homeless is a bum. Im speaking of the selfish, lazy, entitled, thieving, careless individuals that even burned bridges w their families that even they dont help them.
Can't pay any fines yet have money for illegal drugs. Go figure.
Maybe even bus them to Sacramento. 👍
The warehouse will just get burned down..
I don’t wanna treat them like a burden but I’m so tired of seeing it. Especially in places that are supposed to be nice.
You guys in San Diego should drop the homeless on Gavin's front porch.
Gee whiz, how original. How would anyone else solve homelessness?
@@ozzierabbit587 Thank you for posting Mr. Original. To answer your question, admittedly I don't know the solution but my point is more about the hypocrisy that Gavin and others show towards them. They say it's great to help the poor and destitute, as long as it's nowhere near their neighborhoods of wealth and privilege.
Agreed. They can turn the old library can be turned into something! That library has been closed for over 10 years. They need to turn it into something. I get that some people like being homeless and like being on the street, but the mentally ill need a state hospital program to assist them. The city is doing bare minimum.
A closed library. Oh, the incredible irony.
I knew the homeless situation was bad, but I didn't realize how bad it was until I got stationed in California. They are everywhere!
Why would the government fix a problem that the same government created?
The US helps the world community because we're a part of it.
I love how the news always asks people with homes how the homelessness problem is affecting their sensibilities
They're usually the sober one..

@@bigthunder7002 You’re confusing addiction with mental health. Plenty of stable people are whacked out of their minds on a variety of substances daily, but they can hold it together and stay functional because they aren’t also dealing with mental health issues
(in the only first world country to reject a public option for healthcare and a ravenous inequitable housing market)
Please, why don’t you try taking your dog for a walk when a super cracked up person with mental issues tries to attack you and let me know how you think that could affect your sensibilities!
The housing problem has been caused by real estate investment and investors. There is no easy solution. I hate that there may be a possible remedy in creative taxation that helps private homeownership and small investors and puts the burden on the larger investment firms. I do not like the sound of it though.
You are EXACTLY correct!!!! Massive corporate greed, not only in California, not only in US but also in Western Europe.
