  • Mississippi moved to San Diego for a new job; after being laid off, he was evicted. Mississippi and his girlfriend lived in a car. She decided to go live with her daughter. which put Mississippi on the streets homeless in San Diego.
    When we asked Mississippi what was keeping him outside, he responded with one word - HOUSING, as in the lack of housing. He continues that nonprofits in San Diego promised him housing last year, and he's still sleeping outside.
    San Diego is one of the most expensive cities in the world, and it's no wonder that so many people are homeless. This video is a sobering reminder of the challenges that people facing chronic homelessness face every day.
    In the US, homeless people are increasingly criminalized, with politicians on both sides passing laws to push unhoused people out of sight over providing them with the support they need. This homeless man in San Diego is one of the countless victims of this trend. By sharing his story, we are hoping to raise awareness about the struggles faced by homeless people and the urgent need to fix the affroble housing crisis.

    About Invisible People
    There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
    We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
    This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
    However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
    Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

      @@purewonkaong. Talk about things you know about. California has the nicest weather year round in the US. Most other states have deadly cold winters or deadly hot Arizona hot summers, so it's worse to be homeless in most other states, because the weather is terrible.
      Homeless people in California get no money, unless if they actually qualify for Calfresh, GR, or SSI/SSDI. Most homeless people in California do not get these benefits, except maybe for food stamps, which is only enough to buy food for about 2 weeks.
      The real estate industry is just another business. If everyone had affordable housing, then a lot of rich people would lose A LOT of money.

      @@purewonka he didn't choose to be homeless, though. Listen to his story, it's similar to most. Dude came out for a job or some connection, got laid off, and lives on the street because savings and affordability don't mean shit in most of the US unless you make good money to begin with. But even if you do make good money, once you're out of a job, it don't matter anyway because you're back to square one.
      It's not about choosing to live like this. The precarity of people's lives, most being 1-2 paychecks from being on the street, shows it clearly isn't about individual choices or responsibility. If people dont have anything resembling financial or housing security, then of course when their income goes away they are basically back to nothing. This is the reality for a huge majority of people in the US.
      We cannot continue to think that individuals "just getting jobs" or "turning their life around" will change this. Yeah, maybe 5% of people will be able to do that. But that is no marker of substantial change, and doesn't address the root problem of this crisis. If there is no incentive to re-enter society other than individual monetary incentive, their "choice" to be homeless (if you can even call it that) has already been made by systems outside of your control

Never give up. If my mom can beat cancer, than anyone can. You have the same 24 hours as Beyonce. If Heidi Klum can be a successful supermodel, than so can you. If Michael Jordan can be a successful NBA player, than so can you. Fox News says to never choose to have a victim mindset. If you can't afford where you live then move to Afghanistan because it's cheaper. So never choose to be homeless, to have cancer, to be disabled, to be sad, depressed, or offended, even by Holocaust denial. Being offended is a choice. Good Vibes only. Life is in your hands.

      I can't imagine why the government (federal, state or local) doesn't contact investors to build big buildings with thousands of small apartments that people can afford. It would be a good business deal for them! Unless they do something like that, the problem will only get bigger and bigger.

    • @norvikvoskanian4294
      @norvikvoskanian4294 10 месяцев назад +1

      Depending on the state a new apartment complex has to have a certain % of the units dedicated for low income housing and builders bend over backwards figuring out how to get out of that, let alone entire buildings. The margins are much higher for luxury apartments -__-. The incentives aren't there with high government debt burden there is resistance to offer more money so either demand for luxury apartments has to go down or more money for low income housing. Either way this trend is not sustainable and will sadly get worse

    I'm homeless in the city of angels and I can attest to the hell. I pray for a shift in humanity because it will be the only way to solve this crisis and it will take all of us. This is pure corruption and a disease of our society to allow this to become people's reality. I am so sorry to all of us living through this tragedy. Blessings.

    • @kaelacoughlin1988
      @kaelacoughlin1988 10 месяцев назад +13

      @@marcopolo3109 Since you posted this as a question. I will attempt to answer from my experience and from an empathetic standpoint. If one was to put themselves in our shoes and begin to think about the situation, hardships, life adversities, traumas and so on that led people to this situation of homelessness. Many people have mental illness, from mild to severe, and that can lead someone here or be a result of being here or any combination there of. People have disabilities, again in a whole myriad of conditions. Lots of folx out here have substance abuse issues. I would say all of us are in financial ruin. And because of all this, we face immense discrimination and stigma and leading to shame on a daily basis. Up to and def not excluding finding housing or a roommate situation. Not to mention, the $400, $600, $800, or here, $1000 plus a month for a bedroom.And then to include insurance, security deposits, first and last if you are renting a new place. It is largely unobtainable for most. And I feel this may come off as a lot of excuses. But this is reality. Not many can uphold a job out here without access to safe storage of their belongings, no safe place to sleep and rest, showers and hygiene is few and far between out here. We are being left to suffer out here with lack of suitable shelter, resources, financial and social saftey nets are non existent for most. And that needs to change. People need not be in this or fall into this. This is a humantarian crisis and needs to be met with all hands on deck. People aren't digging themselves out of this. Hell most of us in LA live off $220 a month which is cash benefits for the homeless. Can you imagine coming up with only $220 a month. Plus the myriad of other factors, pets, children, or others one may be caring for might be keeping one out here. Not to also mention for the ladies, sexual assault is basically an ongoing experience for us out here. To find a trusting roommate when your boundaries and trust in people is majorly broken. Lastly I've met Soo many people out here that a roommate situation led themselves to homelessness. I speak for myself there as well. Affordable housing, social and financial safety nets, mental health services, substance abuse treatments, physical and mental wellbeing therapy, and a whole lotta compassion, empathy, and support from our communities, we need to demand change. This will be the only way. You offered a solution that is only a tiny small fraction of possible for people out here. Keep fighting. Blessings.

The people making it a crime to be homeless should be arrested for crimes against humanity.

    I used to think homeless was a drug problem or lazy issue. Then I came back from the Marines in 2021 and was homeless living in my car in San Diego. Didn’t want to touch my TSP and didn’t want to reenlist. San Diego has changed a lot. What people see now is not what is used to be. A lot of gentrification happened and kicked Natives out and got out priced by out of state people who in reality had a better fighting chance in their little hometown to save money and pay less taxes. God bless everyone who’s struggling and still putting one foot in front of the other

    Our government gives billions of taxed dollars to foreign countries.
    Cities with millions of taxed dollars built civic buildings, museums, libraries, parks, roads, animals adopted centers, etc. ( For homeless no night shelters with showers and toilets available. Why?)
    Every American needs a safe place to sleep, shower and toilet use daily.
    We pay taxes, pay taxes, pay taxes to have these if we ever become homeless.🤑🤑🤑🤑

Is it to enable people to keep on driving by. Once you have a vehicle you are occupying a vehicle of dispossessive security enabling a forgetfulness of the necessarily enabling left behind. If the city wants to help homeless, help them with gym memberships where they can workout & take showers and help with storage facility where they can store seasonal clothing and food supplies. With those two things homeless can function in society only needing a place to sleep at night while carrying minimal gear. Homeless should never plop a tent down on the sidewalk and decide they live there now, get up every morning, pack up, and move on with their lives.

    I wonder if we as a society could at least provide the bare minimum of shelter to these people. Instead of tents, how about the concept of an RV park, with just the shell of a car (no engine, maybe seats removed, with comfortable bedding). There would have to be a way to heat and cool it, of course. There would need to be restrooms and showers, also, kind of like a campground. And an address and a way to receive mail. As far as cooking, I haven’t thought about that yet. But at least it could be a way to safely sleep and store a few possessions without fear of theft. And undoubtedly, rents need to come down, otherwise there will just be more homeless. It could at least be a temporary solution. Animals are treated better than humans a lot of times. Or may work better on a smaller scale, so there is not such a high concentration in any one area.

    He seems a nice chap. Very clear of mind and certainly does not like a dope addict. I wouldn't just "Give" him a house. I think he should be able to work to keep a house like everyone else. I wish they could give everyone access to a Section 8 style apartment where you must play 30% of your income for rent. There should be enough housing so anyone with a Section 8 voucher should be able to get a clean descent apartment. I would not give dope addicts apartments till they were clean so I don't agree with housing first. If an addict gets clean he shows he is responsible enough to handle living in a house. Part of the problem is the government blew up the projects and did not replace those units on a 1 to 1 ratio. Blow up 3,000 low income units replace 3,000 units. The projects were hell but they beat the heck out of living in a tent on the streets. Also single room occupancy hotels are pretty much gone now.
    IF I had Mark's infamous three wishes. I'd wish for enough money to create Single room occupancy hotels where each room had its own toilet sink and shower. Every working drug free man could have their own clean nice room, toilet, shower, sink, bed and a small storage area. The only people I'd exclude are active druggies\alcoholics, ex convicts and sex offenders. I'm not saying the people I'd exclude don't need help but I don't trust such people so I'm not the one to help them. My brother used to be a druggie but, I could always trust him to never hurt me even when he was using (meth and heroin). My brother was a meth head, a drunk and a heroin addict but he never hurt me or stole from me so I could always help him. He did his last drug on November 15th 1985 been clean ever since. I'm proud of him. That was his last day homeless because I took him in my house. Been with me and clean ever since. Like I say I'm proud of him!
