His solo album Passion and Warfare is a must listen from start to finish for all guitar players.
I agree…but I couldn’t get into Passion and Warfare like I could Fire Garden. That album was so important to Vai that he releases Alien Love Secrets while recording Fire Garden just to keep the record label happy. Dude is just…built different-but also worked his ASS off to get where he is.

Nearly all of top guitarists say he's the greatest guitarist ever.
30 yrs ago he was considered the next step in guitar playing and was the God of the guitar magazines for years.
For the Love of God - it is an amazing song and he reworked his original for playing with a full Orchestra, it is great!
Also he has a new one called Teeth Of The Hydra, which he plays a Guitar that is actually 3.5 Guitars in 1, one is even a Bass and he plays them all at once.
little pretty is an underrated steve vai song. he released it like 1 month or 2 before hydra and no one cared. for me, a composition at the level of tender surreder or for the love of god. i highly recommend it

Steve Vai designed this style of guitar, He called it a Gem (he's a Gemini). He took the blueprints, that he drawn, with the exact specifications and dimensions to Ibanez. He had specific woods, that he wanted used. He has the higher register frets scalloped, for ease of play. He had specific hardware/components, as well. The thought he had about the monkey grip, that he had cut into into the guitar, was to make it a "grab and go" instrument. An interesting fact about this guitar, is the floral pattern paint job, was based on a set of curtains he had. Ibanez originally made 2 prototype guitars, they had a rep bring it to Steve for approval. Steve preceded to completely disassemble them, the rep, started to kinda freak out. Steve told him "relax I do this all the time" (the 5 guitars he had at the beginning of his collaboration with David Lee Roth, he built from various guitar parts). Steve reassembled them and gave the approval to produce them.
The Ibanez Jem series guitar, is not just, "The Steve Vai signature series guitar", it Is from Steve Vai, himself.

The Monkey Grip, as it's affectionately known, was simply a quirk that Steve came up with to make it "something nobody else would ever do" that would help give the JEM an identity all its own. He's talked about it in an interview or two before. I can't remember which ones. But yeah. That's the reason. Lol.
From what I've seen, he uses it mostly for extended hammer/pull off sections to get extra stability for the guitar or for sections with the whammy bar and open strings
When he was with David Lee Roth, he would take the monkey grip and hold the guitar up.
Vai has an honorary PhD in music from Berklee, and did music in 2023 with the Polyphia guys; 100% legendary guitarist even in this day. I've seen him live 3 times. The dude is crazy good. When he comes out with lasers on every finger, and fog machines smoking away... What a sight!
Vai always looks like nothing is hard. He is just so fluid in his movements.
Bro this Dude is in a league of his own . I’m a bass player that bought his guitar because he’s freaking Awesome. He over 60 and still getting better. Listen to his newest records. He not a great singer but I don’t care. Believe all those guys you mentioned except for Eddie V got all that from him.
He has played with many bands and was playing from the 60s.
That was recorded before Herman Li, John Mayer etc. Ever recorded a note. Steve has been around since 80

Yeah, he has been playing a long time, played with Frank Zappa in 1980. Was in a movie, crossroads, in 1986. Played for David Lee Roth, and Whitesnake.
The Octave Riff always made me think of Wes Montgomery's style!

Taught by Joe Satriani when he was a teenager. Join Frank Zappa when he was 20. Did the 1st 2 David Lee Roth solo albums....... This guy has been a guitar God since the early eighties.
I got to see him play this live.....I went to the Satch/Vai tour on 4/20 of this year. They both played all the hits...then did a cool ass version of Enter Sandman.
Joe Satriani was Steve Vai's guitar teacher when he was younger. Steve said Joe pushed him very hard and is the main reason he is where he is today.
Joe even taught Steve how to put strings on a guitar. Joe taught him literally from scratch.

The first time I saw Steve perform live was Halloween 1982 at The Palladium in NYC when he was a member of Zappa's band. Even way back then he was stellar, unorthodox and draw dropping. He's from my old stomping grounds on Long Island in NY. He took lessons when he was starting out from another Long Island boy, Joe Satriani.
Vai is quite simply otherworldly.
Vai calls the handle on the body “monkey grip”.
Steve Vai came up with Frank Zappa and this video is from the late 90s. His idol is Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin although his sound is more relatable to the 70s version of Jeff Beck. Incredible guitarist. Played with David Lee Roth and one album of Whitesnake in the 80s. For the love of God live and Building the Church live. Both are incredible.
The stories of his audition with Zappa are *great*.
The basic version is that Zappa was brutal on an 18 year old Vai. The rest of the band attests that they think he was pretty sure the kid would be in the band as soon as he saw him and heard him play a single lick, and that he was just having fun with him. But Vai's memory is a two hour torture session.

Another of Steve to watch would be from the movie 'Crossroads', the guitar duel at the end is legendary.
Steve Vai is probably the best guitarist of all time. Freak Show Excess is probably my favorite of his.
Steve has a lot of amazing songs. But I couldn’t think of a better one than this one to be your first listen.
They call it a "monkey Grip. Vai wanted to be able to do more stuff with the guitar while carrying it but no one made the guitar he wanted. He ended up taking a drill and carving out the monkey grip on his guitar and Ibanez eventually started making the JEM and JEMJR with the Monkey Grip. The history videos are here on youtube.
Really envious. You have all the back catalogue of Vai and Satriani to look forward to. Some amazing playing to enjoy.
Have you seen that he plays finger style while holding the pick hidden on his right hand taking it out instantaneously to use it when he wants?
A good place to start is The attitude song. It all sums up mr Vai. First time listening was from the inside of a GuitarPlayer-magazine.
This is what it sounds and looks like to have total command of your instrument.
The most impressive thing about this video every time I see it is how well that guitar held tune…. He would go to jail in most states for what he did that guitar.

The look on your face watchin Steve Vai cut all the heads in the solo said it all, it was a look of amazement all over your face lol. Thats the same look I had when I bought the Album Alien Love Secrets when it first came out in 1995. Supposedly that album was just a collection of songs that Steve had recorded, one of them being "Tender Surrender" and just threw them on that Album. The are very few guitarists who are in the category of elite and Steve Vai is one of them.

What's scary is that you're watching a video of Vai that's over 30 years old! Try watching "For The Love of God" or "I Know You're Here".....now THAT is a stunning solo on a triple neck guitar!

The guitar is the Jem-777 The guitar is a 7 string guitar by Ibanez. The guitar is one of the first 7 string Guitars ever made. The guitar was first used on the Passion And Warfare album. Steve vai has played and recorded with Frank Zappa and Whitesnake. You should also check out the guitarist that taught Steve Vai how to play Guitar. I saw a video of Steve Vai, Vince Gill and Albert Lee onstage at a Crossroads concert. Very interesting...three of the best players on earth with drastically different styles.
He has the pick nesteled in the crook of his middle finger. He uses it briefly, on occasion, for the different sound. Watch his right hand and you can see him take it, use it, then put it back.

One of my faves from this man is Building the Church Live from minneapolis or Crying Machine Live from Minneapolis cuz he had two violin players with him on tour on that particular time. Check it out. But his most popular song is of course For the Love of God.
About your question on how long he's been playing. He was taught by a young Joe Satriani when he was going to school . He started at around 1980 when he was 20 and joined Frank Zappa's band. From there he got to a few bands like Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake, etc. until he made an even bigger name for himself when he got into his solo career. Dude's been going strong until today, I heard he's about to release a new album this year.
The monkey grip if i remember correctly was a way to make the guitar distinctive from the rest so nobody would ever try and copy his design . The JEM I think had a lot of distinguishing features from other guitars like claw tremolo etc. Its a pretty convenient tool for Steve to use cuz of the way he plays, as you saw he whirls and do a lot of things with that thing. Probably why he's referred to as a "stunt guitarist" or being credited for impossible guitar parts from Frank Zappa's band.

Another great guitarist is Rik Emmett from Triumph. Lots of great rock songs and a master at classical guitar. Steve Vai played with David Lee Roth after Dave left Van Halen. Also in White snake for a while.

Steve Vai also played on David Lee Roth's first two solo albums. That's Vai doing the talking guitar at the beginning of "Yankee Rose". A fun Vai tune is "I'm the hell outta here". Watch the live version from the Crossroads Guitar Festival.

The handle is part of the design mainly because Steve and Ibanez wanted something to make it personal that nobody would copy.

One of the best things about Vai is that that was almost a carbon copy of the album version down to that last plink at the end. Dude doesn't play the guitar, he makes music and the guitar speaks for him.

You should check out Buckethead‘s Soothsayer. The live version named „one of the best, most emotional“. If you like Vai, you‘ll also like Buckethead.
I agree. Vai, Satriani and Bucketead are my top 3, not in any order. They are all Masters. Love you work thus far, CA. Add Gary Moore and Bonamassa to that list as well.
Bucket releases far too much stuff. Like everything he comes up with, he releases, good, bad or plain awful. I have “Crime slunk scene” and there are three good tracks, one being Soothsayer. The rest are shite, silly noises and robot sounds.
agreed a must listen for ALL guitar players. I'm an old guitar player from the 80-2000's (retired) and I love ALL music but this album is the quintessential Guitar album.

Yes Steve absolutely influences and predates all the guitar players you mentioned!! Lol don't mention Steve Vai around old head guitar players who think Jimi Hendrix is the only guy to take the guitar to the next level.. Mr. Vai has shattered the ceiling on guitar exploration and has made the impossible possible. As far as pushing the limits goes He is the greatest guitarist of my generation there is no argument..
Remember that most all of the people you might think you hear in KIng Vai's playing came after Steve.
The original Gem had a slightly different "handle", called the monkey grip, lol. The only reason was he was just being himself.

This video is off of his store bought DVD, Alien Guitar Secrets or something of that nature. All of the videos on that DVD are not live and some videos, they use a double to fill in for Vai. To get a real feel of this amazing song, you need to listen to it live.
You really need to go back to the 80s and learn about his catalog. He in my opinion is the greatest guitarist ever.
This is an amazing master class level performance. His solo on zombie woof with Zappa plays Zappa is at whole new level. Leaving scales behind and venturing off into a stream of sound manipulation.

There's another famous guitar connection with Satriani too. Kirk Hammett (Metallica) also learned under Joe Satriani. Steve, Joe, and Kirk are, and have always been my top 3.

Steve Vai Lives in a Different World than the Rest of us Mortal Guitar Players. Steve goes way back. Played with David Lee Roth in the 80s. Played with Frank Zappa as well
Steve Vai - Juice (his official channel is SteveVaiHimself). From 1m40s to 2m40s starts out "hey, this solo is cool. I should learn to play it" and quickly becomes "ok nevermind that thought."

I consider him to be the top guitarist of all time imo. He literally probably has millions of hours of playing under his fingers.
I will recommend listening to this girl Arianthi, she's kind of a Vai protégé. They have a killer duet together, but she's absolutely her own musician.
You spotted lots of guitar influences in the song. Nobody has mentioned that the intro is reminiscent of George Benson and Wes Montgomery, great jazz players.
I believe his Jem (his signature Ibanez) is the second most sales signature of all time behind Les Paul, which technically is classified as a signature guitar. I have a few myself. But, I'm a huge Ibanez fan so of course I have some. probably the most versatile guitar ever made. Love them.
