I met Steve at a back stage meet and greet in 2005. I told him I was doing a paper on him for my history of rock 'n roll class. He obviously didn't have time for in depth questions back stage, but he got me over to his business manager who setup a skype interview. The interview was supposed to be 45 minutes, but he was so gracious with his time we ended up chatting for over 2 hours. He's legitimately one of the nicest and most gracious people I've ever interacted with. I met him again a few years later at a G3 show and while he didn't remember my name he asked if "we" got an A on "our" paper lol
Lots of people say Steve is one of the most gracious guys out there and he's been at the music game for a long time.
Allan Holdsworth is a huge influence of Steve’s and Steve has talked about meeting him and how gracious, warm and attentive he was. He sited that as the kind of musician he wanted to be towards others. Glad to know he’s held on to that state of mind

I saw him play this live last summer and it was absolutely insane. I've been a fan of his for over 20 years now, and he still never ceases to do new things that blow me away 🤘🏻

I know it sounds crazy, but you really should listen to Yankee Rose from David Lee Roth. Steve Vai was in his prime in that era. His sound was unreal!
Also, he's in a movie called The Crossroads where he plays guitar for the devil to gamble for souls. Very much worth a watch.
I’d also recommend his work with Whitesnake. Love that album.
you should check out Tender Surrender and For the Love of God...the live versions. Steve Vai is a master. The "hydra" guitar is his own creation, its a master piece

AS OTHERS have said...PLEASE PLEASE check out the official "For The Love Of God" video, from 1990 I think...very similar passion and gorgeous soloing but from a much younger man... I think this was basically a commercial a few years back for his new guitar!!! Not that I'm criticizing!!!

You've now encountered one of the best guitarists out there.
Continuing in the same vein, I'd suggest at some point in the near future you check out Buckethead, Joe Satriani and my personal favorite of the four, Yngwie Malmsteen.
It's very much a case of: not one of them is better than the other, they're all absolute legends; it just comes down to personal preference - but you'll have found something incredible once you've listened to them.
This the most STUPID thing I have ever seen - his playing doesn't mean anything - it's SO STUPID as "musician" - SO STUPID !!!
For some added trivia about this guitar, during the pandemic (Dec 29, 2020), Steve had surgery on his right shoulder. A scary time to get surgery indeed. During that time he wrote a one handed song since he couldn't use his right arm. The song is called Knappsack. But he decided once he had two good arms he would do something special. So he was inspired to create the Hydra guitar and play this song.
Other Vai trivia, Steve Vai had Devin Townsend sing on one of his albums called Sex and Religion. Devin was insane vocally on that album.
Yes, there are TONS of cool features on this thing. I'm sure he had it made just for him.
The first neck is a bass, with half of the neck fretted and half fretless...essentially two basses in one.
The second (middle) neck is basically a conventional guitar, but with extra strings.
The third neck is part 8 string guitar, with half of the neck being fretless...this allows it to be used as both a hybrid guitar and sitar.
There is in fact a mini harp strung across the "open" section of the back.
There are also some cute electronic gadgets that he can use to make a few other electronic sounds.
Well, the middle guitar is his standard 7 string setup, the top one is 12 string not 8.

Steve Vai did an album in 1993 with a 19 year old Devin Townsend on vocals. The album was called Sex & Religion. Check out Deep Down Into The Pain.

Steve has a very good relationship with Ibanez Guitars and they collaborated to build the 'hydra' basically they asked what he wanted and built it. Such a cool track.

You definitley need to check out Tender Surrender
Steve not only has this type of "rare" guitar, he has a similar one which is the Ibanez Jem triple, He also has a heart-shaped one that he used for the Whitesnake concert in Donington 1990 (for the song "Bad Boys") He has an infinite number of guitars, mostly Ibanez Jem, there are some even with Steve's own blood mixed with the paint but These are a limited edition of 300 copies (the Ibanez Jem 2KDNA).
To summarize, The Ibanez Jem is his characteristic guitar created for him and by himself in conjunction with the Ibanez brand, being the Jem was a bestseller for the brand, followed by the Universe model, which was the brand's first 7-string model, and as a matter of fact, something very interesting! The Ibanez Universe (also Vai's signature model) were going to be taken off the market due to their low sales, they were going to be discontinued because no one Ibanez thought that anyone would buy a 7-string guitar, but Vai told them to wait a while longer, he had a hunch, and it was not until the late 90's that Nu Metal bands emerged, and bands like Limp Bizkit, Deftones and especially Korn, took 7-string guitars to capture that characteristic sound, so yes, thanks Steve Vai, Nu metal has that characteristic sound, creating a trend for 7-string guitars and generating successful sales for Ibanez
In June 2023 I had the opportunity to meet Steve at the meet & greet, he signed a book and a pedal from him, and seeing the Hydra in the front row is something unbeatable. Steve for me has been one of my biggest influences in the guitar, every music he makes is something mystical and wonderful

Steve has been an avid Ibanez user for decades. He got with their design team and it took 3 years to design the “Hydra” guitar, to Steve’s one of a kind specifications.
It has 6 “heads”
1. 12 string fretted guitar (top of top head).
2. 12 string fretless guitar (bottom of top head. Sounds like a sitar
3. 7 string guitar with sustainer pickup (middle head)
4. Fretless bass (top 2 strings of bottom neck)
5. Fretted bass (bottom 2 strings of bottom neck)
6. Harp (the circle area you noticed)
It also has built in effects generators (the knobs you saw him play with).
I hope this helps clear up the Master’s vision on what an instrument can be.
Steve Vai is one of the few men in the world who is considered a GOD of the guitar and it is not for less, the way of playing is inhuman, it is beyond comprehension. The Hydra is not a musical instrument, it is rather a machine that only he is worthy of playing, just like Thor's fucking hammer only he is worth touching, so is Steve Vai's Hydra.
Yes, he has played it live in concert. It weighs 50 lbs, so he had to create a special belt level attachment that hooks to the back. Its made by Ibanez, which is the brand he always uses and it took them 7 years to design and make it.
Steve doesn’t use the special belt anymore. The hydra is place on a stand designed by Doug MacArthur Steve’s current tech

Steve Vai has me really inspried as a guitar player. He is my number 2 after John Petrucci(Dream Theater). I recommend you his song "Tender Surrender"(he literally seduces you), "For the love of god" and also "Knapsack"(he played only with one arm, because he had a surgery). He really found so many techniques and helped modern guitar players alot. Still he has his unique play that is shining bright.
He is by far one of the most influental guitar players in the world. He often played two or three headed guitars and really the best legato player. The instrument was created after his ideas together with Ibanez. Ibanez is a famous guitar brand from japan. He has his own line of signiture guitars for this brand and they sell like crazy.
I recommend you also Dream Theater "Under the glass moon". The solo in this song had thousand players all around the globe in aww. I needed months to learn it and its really beautiful composed. Allmost any technique is used and its very jazzy.
Also hard to get sadly i recommend you the G3 concerts from Japan. G3 is a super group Steve Vai and his Teacher Joe Satriani as a duo and another great guitar player that changes every tour. Japan Tour is very old but it was Vai, Satriani and Petrucci. It was insanity, so many awesome solos i could cry in hapiness.
To explain a little, the Hydra guitar has a 12-string neck (I think electroacoustic) the science of the 12 strings is that like a 6-string guitar but with double strings, and obviously it sounds double hahaha and half of this neck is fretless , that makes it possible to play the notes like a violin.
The second neck has 7 strings, with a sustainer, this makes the notes you play infinite until you stop pressing the string.
The third neck is a 4-string bass, semi-fretless only for the third and fourth strings, which, as I explained before, has an easier time sliding through the notes.
On the side of the hydra it has a small harp and an effects PAD on the top, I think it has a USB input and everything, the guitar in terms of electronics is very sophisticated and was built in Japan in conjunction with Ibanez guitars

I find the Internet less interesting than I think it is supposed to be, for example listening and learning about Steve Vai !! Who are these people I first saw him with Zappa in 82-83, then Alcatrazz and was a huge fan by David Lee Roth Band .. I mean I learned about music from friends other players and now we are seeing people do reactions to things and player's that have been around atleast 2 decades not to include Vai who I think is 64-65 just recently and the man knows more about music than most could wish to learn in a lifetime.. Now reactions, seriously were you born in a box in Iceland ? Nightwish,Linkin Park , Slipknot and so on are main stream music for generations of people,so what makes your thoughts special.. As a musician my parents made me respect all music from day one, so I learned about Mozart,Handel, schumer and so on country, blues , jazz and by 9 i was into progressive music, Jethro Tull, Steely Dan , King Crimson and the 80's brought us progressive Metal Queensryche amd then Dream Theater , and a generation of instrumental heroes , Satriani, Vai , Richie Kotzen,Marty Friedman and Jason Becker, Tony MacAlpine amd your now realizing and experiencing what people have enjoyed for 60 years . This youtube actually charges people money to see this without commercials wow this world has truly turned to shit !!!

the guitar was made just for him. he had the idea, told the techs and worked with them to build it. its a one of a kind guitar and he is the only one to play anything like it so far.

Steve Vai was taught by the great Joe Satriani or "The Alien." Satriani also taught Kirt Hammett of Metallica. Vai and Satriani are known as guitar virtuosos. Both are definitely worth a deep dive along with other virtuosos like Yngwie Malmsteen, John 5, and Michael Angelo Batio. Pretty much just instrumental guitar shredding. I think Batio would be the most mind-blowing based on the guitars he uses.

He did design this guitar and he then had to figure out how to make a song using everything together to make something musical and interesting to perform. Steve is one of the greatest guitarists of all time as you can probably tell.

This is the sort of music that I appreciate but don’t love. Creating a track like this, and being able to play it is beyond mind blowing but it’s not something I’m going to listen to on repeat. I suppose really it’s something for the time when you’re not going to be disturbed and you can listen through high quality headphones, the car stereo or some AirPods won’t cut it

What you don't understand, because you're not a guitarist, is the extreme complexity of having both hands playing simultaneously on different hydra necks. The brain has to totally dissociate what it used to associate over decades of practice. And this is obviously pushed to the extreme by Steve Vai.

It’s a 12 string guitar/sitar, looks like a seventh string electric guitar in the middle, a base on the bottom the top two strings fretless, and harp strings, on the back. And I believe the guitar is actually called the Hydra. I believe it stands for the three heads/necks.
