Yeah I’ve been binging all of his content after this lmao, he has a few really good hidden gems. Steve definitely has grown as a composer, I have to hand it to him
When Steve says "...but I knew I could do better..." you know there will be a new high bar set. Amazing concept and instrument. Amazing dude. Amazing composition and performance. Love you, Steve. You're in a class by yourself.
Yes . It would have physically HEAVY alright . Half a Tree , right there . An AMAZING build by the Ibanez Luthiers . If the inspiration was Mad Max , then it MUST have a Flame-thrower too .
He invented his own language when he was a teen and he keeps imagining and inventing. His new music is also a testament to his continuing growth. He's a renaissance man.
Pretty positive you made that up, but even if he had, I'm guessing it had no actual grammar or anything to qualify it as a language and not just some doofy made up words by some goober everyone thinks is a god.
@@mu4990 No I didn't. Years ago he did an interview in which he said he kept a diary of his dreams. As a teen he came up with an alphabet and wrote the dreams down using his own alphabet to keep it as private as possible. He still keeps a journal but I don't think he uses the language he came up with as a teen anymore.
I can’t believe he’s sixty years old. Vai looks better than people I know who are half his age and they take good care of themselves. More power to him 🙏
You did such a good job Mr. Vai. What an incredible piece written for such an incredible instrument. I have new found respect for you after already having a lot of respect for you
Can anyone imagine what the Master Player Michael Angelo Batio would do with this Hydra Guitar ? He would use both hands at once to play break neck speed Arpeggios with all of these necks , at the same time . 😍🙊🙉🙈🙏⚡🌋🤑🤑🤠🤗🤔🙄😳👀💦✨🌟💫💥🔥
A couple of years ago i was thinking that i was surprised that no one ever made a guitar that was built with the features of a synthesizer . AND THERE IT IS !
Stevie looks sleep "deprived" or stoney, smoking that sticky icky icky, he blazed yo, and able to discuss his new damn guitar... a frigging Hydra. Music is love.
@@StevenSiroVai1 Seriously Sir, if this is you, I cannot describe how big of a fanboy I am of you! I’m 14 right now and I can say safely that I am your biggest fan in the whole wide world. I did a school presentation on you that lasted 4 times more than anyone else’s from memory (we had to cut it short and the teacher was getting impatient lol, I only got up to your PAW years because the bell rang, but I was going to go for 40 minutes haha), “Tender Surrender” helped me to win the school talent show, and you are my favourite guitarist ever! That’s not because of your superb technical skill (which can outshred 99% of shredders, mind you), but because your music connected with me on an emotional level and captured me. My dad showed me “Fire Garden” and “For The Love Of God” before I even played guitar, cause he has good taste (he’s not a guitarist, just to show you how meaningful you are to people of all professions and levels of musical understanding). I cannot begin to describe how important your music is in my life, you inspired me to use ALL my time for practice and creativity, and to follow my dreams to be a successful professional artist like you. I base my philosophy of what music should be off of what you have said in interviews, and trust me, I’ve seen all of yours. And because of the practice you inspired me to do, I now improvise and play Jazz Fusion, and have really great chops similar to Paul Gilbert and John Petrucci, I know the people in the comments are going to deny this but it’s true. I even went through a massive phase of ripping everything you play off (yes the quick slides, legato, Lydian and everything else that is yours), so much so that I had to remove my whammy bar and tell myself not to listen to your music for a while even though I enjoy it the most, just so I could get further from the idea of copying someone who’s style is so recognisable 😅. Wow this is basically an essay, I never post long comments like these at all, but I was so excited and I hope that no one is bothered by this. Thanks for your legacy that you have left, and I wish you a long and happy life, Andrés Olan, Auckland, New Zealand (Please remember the name 😉)
@@StevenSiroVai1 Sorry for saying things that might not've needed to be typed, I edited that post. Did you know that the tab book for your Story of Light album says that the Russian lyrical spoken words are Spanish? Also, can you make a video of the chord Mr. Zappa asked you to play before he said, "I heard Linda Ronstadt is looking for a guitar player."? Is it kind of like the 5 note chord during the outro of "Skyscraper" by you and David Lee Roth? Also please share your experience playing on the PIL album, including John's reaction the first time he heard your playing on "Ease". Thank you Mr. Vai.
When I first saw this beast I thought this isn't just flash and gimmick, he's going to USE that thing in some amazing way. I feel that indeed the case.
Awesome Song Teeth of Hydra, That is Awesome But geez imagine carrying that thing around in its case, you would need a hand cart / Dolly to move it around.
MAD MAX and Steve Vai - It kind of makes sense ! This thing ius steam punk all the way. Very cool, Ibanez ! Ibanez has ALWAYS been leading the way, not following. Not my favorite brand now, but I have mad respect, pun intended.
Its so funny that Steve referenced Fury Road as the influence for the Hydra because that was the first thing I thought of when I saw the Hydra! Steve, they shouldve hired YOU to be the guitar player in Mad Max!
I love steampunk myself it looks like the guitar was envisioned out of a movie it's true, I like that it's actually functional everything has a purpose it's not just for show, I like that you can play different instruments at the same time and get multiple tones of sound and I think only Steve Vai himself can make up a song like "Teeth of the Hydra" just amazing! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 👍🏻
Makes Paul Gilbert's 2000 guitar look like child's play, and they didn't like building that one. I wonder what the guys at Ibanez really thought about this Hydra, "jesus, here we go again...", lol.
Maybe the challenge of moving while playing the hydra can be met by being airborne..I.e. flying over stage and audience using ropes, pulleys and weights..and would suit the otherworldliness of the instrument & it's music. Then Ibanez could make a mini consumer version for mass production.
Surprised he doesn't mention/credit the movie Jason and the Argonauts (1963), as it features a multi-headed beast called "The Hydra" and it's (dead) extracted teeth are used to sprout armed skeletons from the soil.
Thanks for this video, and after watching Steve's music video I had to read the credits to answer my question, "Did Ibanez build this guitar, too?" I really appreciate the partnership they build with you, Joe Satriani, and all their guitarist customers. (I picked up an Ibanez AS73FM-TAF, a pleasant break from heavier acoustic strings, and the stock pickups are well balanced. They may have a similar design philosophy to Toyota, designing and building a balanced vehicle to transport you to new places... as AMD explains on The car Care Nut channel, "They build their vehicles with the philosophy "If it ain't broke don't fix it!") Enjoy your tour in the Pacific Northwest! (from the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene region, I have some kids moving back to the west side of WA. Thank you all!)

It is fine line between genius or mad. This is both!? Now it is more is more(quote from him) Yngwie Malmsteen like this 7-string guitar, bass, harp, and twelve string. It needs two guitar straps or you have to play it on your knees? How much weight?
I'm rather curious as to *exactly* what those three vacuum tubes at the top rear actually do. i.e. are they are pre-amp or part of one of the on board FX etc? They never seem to be fully explained in any of these videos that cover the Hydra.
コレを弾きこなしてちゃんといい曲を作ってしまうのが凄すぎる。
Tenacious D must borrow this guitar for one gig at least.
Imagine Steve using the pick of destiny instead

He’s probably cussing Steve under his breath every night... 😆🤷🏼♂️
I'm sure he gets paid handsomely to do so (I hope lol)
I would be like "you were the one who wanted to build this thing, you work on it."
You don't know many tech guys, they would love to work on that.
3 necks and a harp....so damn near an electric version of Pat Metheny's Pikasso guitar from 35 years ago.
I'm really glad he did a demo in this video.
I thought it was too far out of this world already before seeing the electronics! WOW! Magnificent and kudos to the builders!
