This is why I've always been partial to single kick drummers. I believe it takes more creativity and technique to pull off a good solo and Vinny nails it. Much respect to Portnoy, one of the best, but my ear always gravitates to a single kick player with a fast foot and good technique.

Mike is a brilliant drummer..who plays completely different then Vinny. To suggest that Vinny is less "equipped" is nonsense. He plays HIS way...Mike plays his. There is no winner...but us for being able to hear them both play. You are entitled to a preference...we are all human with different tastes..but if you think for one second one is BETTER then the other..you're a complete idiot.

I love both Vinny and MP but if you give them each a 5 piece drum kit, or simply a snare drum, Vinny is going to benefit because he is a rudimentally stronger player than MP. That's not taking away anything from MP. Portnoy is an extraordinarily creative player. They both groove like mothers, but Vinny has a f**king ENORMOUS pocket. They are both huge influences on my drumming.

It was a typical rock solo style with some Peart influences from Mike but I know he’s a great technical player when he has to Vinnie is a legend if you wanna say playing with Ozzy and all It was nothing amazing here to be honest but it’s all in fun to have two known drummers playing together

Saying Portnoy can't play a heavy groove is not only a lie, it's just a cop out for tryin to make Vinnie look like he can do something Mike can't. There are Far better drummers out there than either of them. But Mike CLEARLY possesses more skills in every facet of drumming regardless of simple grooves or complex polyrhythms. Overall it was fun to watch the interplay but don't take something away from Mike in an effort to make Vinnie look better. You're only kidding yourself.
Vinnie is way more expressive. Hands down ! I always preferred Gene Krupa over Buddy Rich for the same reason. Musical expression always beats pure technique EVERY time.
As a drummer..I really respect Buddy, but I still yawn at his playing...I saw him in late 70s and he invited all audience members to come up on stage..saw him play from 5 feet away!
My opinion: both fantastic drummers, but Mike Portnoy is the technically better drummer with super fast double base drum technique, fantasy and more varied drum rolls.
Mike showing his confidence and maturity by giving Vinny his praise, it really was not close, but respect for both, Mike is the number#1 progressive rock drummer right now and always a student.
Portnoy is very talented no doubt but he has way more drums, cymbals, and options. I love Vinny's style and grooves. He is one of my favorite drummers. Some people are also born with more speed than other and you can't teach that to anybody. They were both very good during this session.
I love Vinny and grew up listening to him. I respect Mike a lot, one of the best drummers of this generation. I think Mike has the technique and the speed over Vinny. Vinny has awesome groove and is a beast but i can't help but notice how much this small drum set he has been using for the last couple of years limits his playing so much. The same happened with the duel he had with Carmine. Listen to that monstrous drum solo from Live Evil and you can hear the difference. No pun intended to Mike because he is the beast!!!!!!! But wish Vinny would build up his set how he used to or close to it. Awesome solos from both!!!!
Having lots of drums doesn't make you a phenomenal drummer , I play a 4 PC kit and sing lead vocals and I try my best to deliver, now alot of phenomenal drummers have the big kits and that Kool, but Vinny does it with not so big of a kit and is phenomenal , he not better than Mike and Mike is not better than Vinny they are just different bottom line

Mike kicked Vinny's ass in the same way a Ferrari would kick a dump truck's ass at a drag race. Vinny is an old dinosaur, but he's played with the best and laid much of the the foundation for modern drummers to build upon. Vinny is Obo Wan Kenobi. Mike is Luke Skywalker.
People talk about Portnoy as some technical genius....and yep he’s a very good drummer....but he would get absolutely smoked by Virgil donati as far as technique and chops are concerned... he’s on another planet

I prefer Vinnie's technically much less accomplished style, but which has a certain feel I can't find in Mike's drumming.
