Billy plays a mike portnoy beat at 5:08, it's the beginning of the song "6:00" off the awake album from dream theater. Pretty cool, you can tell he's got some respect for his elders. New school cats will always be better than older generation guys chop wise, but the respect is there from billy which is cool.

Too bad he (Portnoy) botched the Dream Theater gig; he'll never get it back from Mangini.
@ARKAEA33 Zach Hill is in that 'new school' demographic bubs. Just of the top of my head- check out Eric Moore; that dude is a session drummer but puts Zach's speed and endurance to shame when he's just goofing off and that's one of a multitude of drummers out there right now.
I came here to point this out! Also with this 'new school' referencing... Billy is much more Gadd/Porcaro in his execution, nothing like Hill who is more like Keith Moon in the way of artistry and the abstract. Ilan Rubin and Billy Rymer are the best of today's drummer imho.

In the late 70's and 80's, the stuff Peart was doing within the realm of technical Rock drumming was so forward thinking and darn near impossible--which is why he inspired so many drummers and still gets named dropped as an influence by most Rock drummers worth listening to. Like everything else, a newer generation will come and raise the bar even higher from the previous generation (see the video above)...but, in order to get to the guys that YOU consider "the best" today, you had to have guys like Peart first. Billy Rymer wow killed it!
I've never seen this Rymer dude before... But damn he definitely won this fight in my opinion!
Both guys are great, but I'm not a Dream Theater fan. I think Portnoy has technique and style, but I'm giving it to Rymer on technique, rhythmic expertise, and (least of all) I'm a HUGE fan of The Dillinger Escape Plan.
Some classic reggae right here!
Portnoy vs Ulrich, now there's a challenge for both parties
The battle our humanity needs , but doesn't deserve..
That. Was. Epic.
Billy drumming is so good, i started headbanging when double bass came in...
Love Billy Rymer's percussion
:○)
that beat that billy lays into at 2:31 is insane
Absolute awesomeness from both of them but even though I am a Portnoy fan I have to give this one to Billy.
Hell yeah I definitely was caught off guard with that.
The talent level of drummers from Long Island is unreal! Mike is from KP I believe, and he's not even in the discussion of top drummers on LI.
I would love to see a Minnemann/Rymer battle. It would be a lot closer.
"Billy! ...Holy shit.."
crowed member "Nice!"
I fucking love Billy - he's only the drummer on their most recent album as well - all there drummers have been ridiculous!!!
I love how Billy Rymer owns the shit out of Portnoy in this video yet basically every one of the related videos are all about Portnoy. Loooool.
Rymer has played with better bands. The Dillinger Escape Plan is probable one of the most original sounding bands ever.
Is it just me, or has Rhymer developed Chris Pennie's signature chin-jutting pose?
I was running out of characters to use so bands with short names were applied. What's your beef with Trivium? I really like their lyrics.
Two extremely different and talented drummers :P
Which china did Rymer use ? Can anyone please tell me ?
Thank you .
and that's why i listen Dillinger.
Both are awesome and clearly respect each other. Rymer stole the show though!
Both are amazing drummers but I liked Rymer a lot more, much more pleasing to listen.
Well, he does occational triplet-feel stuff, polyrythms, and 3-beat pulse etc.
Not sure if I used the correct term, I study music in Swedish, but you get the point.
I’m Seven years too late but billy crushed it.
I really gotta see Rymer face off against Zach Hill
Mike Portnoy had allready used up his drumknowledge by minute two...whilst Billy could go one hour without boring the audience ! And I am not disrespectful bla bla I'm just stating facts !
Teethclenser2007 but then solo drumming was never portnoy's strength, its his team composition
Mike Portnoy signed my Snare saying "hit me" lmao.
Billy 110% technique, rhythmically creative and originality.
Mike Portnoy is really F'ing amazing at being mainstream as F. Billy Rymer is really Fucking amazing at being mathcore as Fuck. They're both really fucking good.
This video pleases me.
