Place it on top of your carpet, make your mix in another bucket, then simply pour it into the one with holes and quickly pick it up and it basically is like a watering can. Makes it so much easier to disperse the solution all over without missing spots.

If you have never wet a rug you have never cleaned a rug! Pet stains go all the way to the backing so rugs need to be washed all around.Only wall to wall can not be cleaned.

My cat got sick on the rug a few weeks ago and my daughter reached for a bottle of spray cleaner which had oxy in it. She left it sit and when she cleaned it , I had a bright spot on my carpet. I went and bought more bottles and put it in a sprayer, and then I ran my Bissel over it. My carpets look brand new!

I had it in my head to clean my carpet in a similar manner... great to see you do it and it works. I didn’t use the glass cleaner in my mix... now a new subscriber
You need to use a garden hose with a spray nozzle and spray the carpet down with clear water. This will remove excess dirt and soap build up, which will cause you carpet to get dirty more quickly. It is a good idea to do the backside of the carpet too.
Thanks for the video. I found it to be very meaningful and educational. I particularly appreciate the science lesson about OxiClean at the end. I wish I had some of your energy!

For all that effort and mess, I would recommend taking it to a professional rug cleaning place. White carpets have to be the most impractical color for anything other than out-of-the-way decoration. I have found that for darker, shorter nap carpet, a spray of stain remover and a damp mop will take out stains. Let the stain remover sit for about five minutes, spray again, and mop well. Rinse the mop and go over it again a couple of times.
Great video!!!I'm in the middle of doing mine..I started with my power washer....wow!!! Then got my carpet cleaner machine to suck up all the water. Next I'll try this mixture and see what happens. I've got white in my rug too. Thx for sharing ur experience!!
If I don't clean it, it won't E-VER get cleaned. And if I don't cook it, we don't eat and if I don't launder it, there are no clean clothes (sigh). And they say women are high maintenance!
If the foaming is a problem, fill the bucket with water first when making up the cleaning solution. Then add the other ingredients, stirring gently to mix. Also, be VERY SURE the attachments for your shop vac are clean, or they will leave streaks on the rug. The rug will dry faster if you get it up off the ground, and drape it over something like saw horses or even the backs of furniture. Allowing the air to move under and around the rug will help it dry more evenly and quickly.
Dry it with fans next time. The longer it takes to dry will cause alkaline browning. Also if you do get browning just mist it with white vinegar, this will neutralize the ph level and clear the browning. Just thought I’d share some knowledge here. Your video was great and spot on(no pun intended). Thanks , I hope this comment is not over stepping my boundaries here, just being helpful. Keep the videos coming. :)
Washington Pro Carpet Cleaning thank you so much for your response! Comments like yours are always welcome! I did underestimate the drying time, so I appreciate the tips and will certainly use them in the future!
Awesome job! I have a couple of tips.. 1. Saturate the carpet with the hose first before using the solution. 2. Use a 2 gallon watering can to spread the solution more evenly. 3. Drape carpet over 2 saw horses to speed up drying time. I hope this helps! BTW thank you for the science lesson!
Thanks so much for the tips! I actually made a video with the same rug a year later. I did a better job of saturating and drying. I love the watering can idea! Here's the video if you want to check it out! ruclips.net/video/HzHwarjdW4E/видео.html Thanks for checking in and have a great day!!
You also needed to add 91 percent alcohol! Dawn platinum, alcohol picks up tar shoe polish etc. Used in detailing cars and use a shop vac just a small one will do.
Back in the day my father used to pull the mattress and box spring out and use boric acid and hot soapy water. He would scrub each side and let them sit in the sun. Good idea.
Honestly I took my rug that was about this size to a nice laundromat and it has XL washer and dryers and dry without heat and they come out brand new and smell amazing!
Jasmine Escobar Perry interesting idea. I’d be willing to try but this rug is pretty big (8’x10’) and rigid. I’m not sure it would even fit in a XL washer. Lol. It’s been a little over a year since I made the video though and the carpet is ready for a good cleaning again! Hmmmm
Excellent video! Again the science at the ends of your videos makes it interesting for me. Now, I'll have to get a few kids and a dog so I can try this one out.
Rachel Barnhouse exactly lol! We did the carpet 9 months ago and it still looks great! The family was just playing on it last night. Thanks for watching and the support!
Because most people would rather overthink and do nothing, all the while criticizing those of us that DO. In the era of google everyone has a online PHD. Or as Dave Ramsey says, a PhD in DUMB Oxi Clean works. PERIOD. You can add other ingredients to make it even more effective.

@bikeit 32 lol at the thinking a rug costs $50 😂. I can only assume you don't work hard for your money or you've been giving everything in life, we all don't have that luxury. Thank your parents
Call a decent owner operated carpet cleaning outfit, like mine... lay out ALL your rugs on the driveway and they can be hot water extracted with proper cleaning solutions and techniques for like $150. Also the steam and massive, gas powered truckmount blower will leave them nearly dry before you can say, "What is my time worth?".
I know I sound lazy but that is what I was thinking. I wouldn't want to waste a sunny day (it is pouring rain right now) on cleaning a carpet when I can get a professional to do it for me. BUT he wanted to do so more power to him.
Had to laugh a little. That is the same carpet I have and I am trying to clean. It's too cold to do this right now in WI, but I will try to spot clean with this mixture. Thanks for the vid.
I actually use that oxiclean all the time in my clothes. It really works wonders. Used it since I was a kid and I have never had a bad experience with it.
I would love to try this, yes it takes work but a rug shampooer never gets it this clean as the solution stays in it. Keeps a perfectly good rug out of the landfills as well.
Totally agree! Thank you! I made another video on the same rug a year later comparing a rug shampooer to this technique. Here's a link if you haven't seen it... ruclips.net/video/HzHwarjdW4E/видео.html Have a great day!!
This is the way a local rig company cleans carpet in house . Watched the process.my suggestion don't put plastic under the rig.water hose a sponge mop with a rounded sponge and not square.you just need to turn the rug over a couple times to let sun dry it.worked for me and I have three dogs.
I sorta do this, I put my carpet out in the driveway before it rains, covering it with baking soda. The rain and baking soda does most of the work. When its finished raining, I let it sit and let some of the water run off, then move it over on the driveway and keep doing that until its dry. I use baking soda as it cleans and deodorizer and I don't have residue on the carpet.
Pretty much EXACTLY what the professional carpet cleaning guys say NOT to do, ie never use Vinegar, don't scrub the carpet as it damages the fibers, and don't super saturate the carpet as you'll probably damage the underlay. An ingredient THEY tend to use in their mixture is 90+ percent Rubbing Alcohol. For drying, use a wet/dry shop vac to soak up the solution without scrubbing. Also, don't use excessive dish soap as you'll end up with a foamy mess which is harder to extract. In this case, less is more. At any rate, it's your carpet so do whatever the hell you like.
I know this is an older video, but I wonder if you could use this recipe to put in your carpet cleaner for furniture too.???? I subscribed as soon as I saw the backsplash removal video. 👏 👏 👏
Hi Donna, thank you! I imagine it would be okay for some furniture, but if there's wool or natural fibers in the upholstery, then I wouldn't use this recipe. What kind of furniture did you have in mind?
@@Donna-vh5ym I'm sorry Donna. Natural fibers are a little trickier. Depending on the stain, anything from warm water to glycerin might work on linen. Whenever I'm not sure, I call a local professional and ask. In this case perhaps a local upholstery professional could tell you what chemicals they use on natural fibers when they clean furniture. Please let me know if you find a good answer! Good luck!
Yes, I pressure washed some area rugs at the car wash 25 years ago and they looked like brand new, even the outside rug by the front door. They even have heavy duty clamps at the carwash. You can then throw them in the back of the truck to bring home. For large rugs like this I've also used the driveway. The pressure washer is definitely a much faster and deeper clean.
👍 Peroxide works well to bleach out the white while in the sunlight. A condescend shop light, not led, also works well too. (Also I recommend a cheap 2gal pump sprayer)
Thanks! Great question, and OxiClean is safe on colors. It is chlorine free which is the chemical that normally does damage to color on clothing. Good luck!
Thanks! Line drying isn't a bad idea. Perhaps you can hang something over the line first (like a towel or blanket) so pressure of the line from the wet rug is more distributed over a larger area? Let me know how it goes! We've been having our cool mornings down here in Florida (65F) 😂 I'm sure that's not your idea of cold.
I recommend a few adjustments to what you do with this. First I would wet the rug first before you put you mix on that way you don't have to do that later, second I would suggest you get a curved squeegee to push more of the water at a time and lastly I wouldn't worry much about the tarp just lay it down then put your carpet on top of it that's it. Other than that this is pretty much how I clean my rugs and will be doing once I get my business up and running here shortly. Edit:. Also you can use a leaf blower to help dry it quicker you would just need to elevate the carpet a little to do so.
@@HandzforHire no problem. I learned some of those from professionals and especially since I'm starting small I have to use some old school methods to do so
Go to Bed Bath and Beyond or Walmart or Target and get a Bissel Pro Heat 2x Revolution carpet cleaner. Mix OxyClean a teaspoon dish soap alcohol if you have mites. And hot water.
@@caroline61804 I have one of those and it's worth every penny! I actually paid $250 for mine but that's when it had just come out, but I've never once regretted the money spent. I have 2 dogs, 3 cats, a teenage son, and a husband and *none* of them are easy on my beige carpet. My Bissel cleans everything right up!
I thought you are never supposed to mix vinegar and oxy…. As it can make a dangerous gas. But then I’ve seen a couple times of people using them together. I’m so confused.
Great question, and I don't think it's dangerous, but the pH might cancel a bit. Vinegar is acidic and oxiclean is basic. You may be thinking of vinegar and bleach. You never want to mix those two because they release a toxic chlorine gas when they react together. Have a great day!
Thanks! It does take some time, but I only do it once a year. I can imagine this would be tough in a flat in the UK, but maybe you can use the solution for some spot cleaning. Have a great day!

Hi David, I actually just published another video cleaning the same carpet with various methods; one of which is using Oxiclean in a carpet cleaner. ruclips.net/video/HzHwarjdW4E/видео.html
You also had an extra added element in your process, as you let the carpet dry outside in the sun... UV rays have disinfectant and bleaching properties. With the OXI clean turning into Hydrogen peroxide this would have a bleaching effect...

I'm proud to say that I drink 8 glasses of Oxiclean a day. Thanks for the video!!
Lol, love it!
Thanks for the video. I found it to be very meaningful and educational. I particularly appreciate the science lesson about OxiClean at the end. I wish I had some of your energy!
Thank you so much! It's the high school physics teacher in me =)
I have been trying to figure what to do with my carpet. I was just playing with the idea of throwing it away and buying a new one even though this one was quite expensive. I will definitely give this a try before taking the final step of dumping it. Thanks! Great video!
Simply Dee I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Please let me know how it goes! On a side note, please don’t use OxiClean if your expensive carpet is wool. If it is then just leave the OxiClean out. If it’s not wool then go for it!
Hey Dee, his video is great. But, if you don't tackle the project, take it to a professional carpet cleaner. It'll be far, far less than replacing it.
We use the liquid Oxy in our shampooer. Works amazing and smells amazing.
That's a great idea!
Where did you find liquid oxy at? Didn't even know they made it in liquid form.
If it didn’t work you should still post it because we still want to know what works and doesn’t work. So we don’t make the same mistake in future
I used a floor scrubber with 2 roating heads too clean the carpet was alot easyier. (I got mine at thrift store for $5.00) also when dry Scotch quard the carpet really well. It will stay cleaner longer.
That is truly good advice. Says me who bought a $249.00 Shark. However I do buy a lot of stuff second hand. Goodwill is a great way to go.
i have the same exact rug! ty!! i bought it for 30 dollars today !! it has some high traffic in the center area, and i was wondering how to clean it. it looks exactly like yours before! i will try this! 👍
Brianna Kaye awesome! Let me know how it goes!
Thank you! I have been looking at my dirty living room rug for weeks. It stinks. I can’t wait to follow your video and get it cleaned. Awesome you explained the icy clean!!! Thank you!
My pleasure! Let me know how it goes! I also recently released a second video cleaning the same rug comparing a few different methods. ruclips.net/video/HzHwarjdW4E/видео.html
Baby wipes work great on ground in ( dried) & greasy stains.
Great video!!!I'm in the middle of doing mine..I started with my power washer....wow!!! Then got my carpet cleaner machine to suck up all the water. Next I'll try this mixture and see what happens. I've got white in my rug too. Thx for sharing ur experience!!
Lisa Janette awesome! Let me know how it goes.
I use my power washer for rugs too! It’s great!
Lisa Janette ~ I learned to flip it, from this video: ruclips.net/video/L3sn1eBW5q0/видео.html
Pressure washer is how I clean almost every rug & car mats too!
When you started vacuuming without the attachment I was definitely rolling my eyes a bit. lol glad you remembered it!
Lol, we all have our moments.
Wow this was so satisfying thanks for sharing you're idea I'm gonna try it
Thanks for watching! Let me know how it goes!
Wish my husband cared about thorough cleaning things.
Lol. I'm the clean one in our house.
My husband is the one who mostly clean the house too lol
Handz for Hire Lucky woman! 😊
tarshia baker He’s a keeper! ☺️
Thank you for the great tips!
Omg I washed my rug a while back and it turned brown lmao I though I didn’t wash it good and that the dirt just rose up thank you so much
Awesome job!
I would definitely try this if I had a rug. Inexpensive and effective. Awesome job. BTW I love your voice.
Vontique87 thank you!
You also needed to add 91 percent alcohol! Dawn platinum, alcohol picks up tar shoe polish etc. Used in detailing cars and use a shop vac just a small one will do.
Thank you for the tip! I'll add that to the cocktail next time.
Back in the day my father used to pull the mattress and box spring out and use boric acid and hot soapy water. He would scrub each side and let them sit in the sun. Good idea.
Very nice!
Hmmmm
Handz for Hire my rug is the same size! I live in Houston so idk if it’s a Houston thing but we have massive washer and dryers in our laundromats!
Jasmine Escobar Perry good to know! Have a great day!
Excellent video! Again the science at the ends of your videos makes it interesting for me. Now, I'll have to get a few kids and a dog so I can try this one out.
David thanks! Haha I can loan a dog and some kids if you want to try. Lol
When every comment is a critique 🙄🙄🙄
Sometimes you want a deeper clean than the bissel, and this is probably done once a year so calm down y'all- jeez
Or as Dave Ramsey says, a PhD in DUMB
Oxi Clean works. PERIOD. You can add other ingredients to make it even more effective.
bikeit 32 I can tell you likely don’t restore anything from your narrow focus on value...
bikeit 32 I rebuild cars. It’s obvious we have different skills and priorities. I don’t buy crap just to toss it away and buy another. But to each his own
@bikeit 32 lol at the thinking a rug costs $50 😂.
Yea true but his way saved him $150 and not that much hard work for a medium sized rug
That rug looks amazingly clean! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! My pleasure!
Great video. I have actually power hosed mine before. : )
Thanks!
Great video and loved how you included your daughter way to go Dad
Thanks 👍
That is what I call working real hard. I am going to try this.
I hope it goes well for you! Have a great day!
Woah that’s determination. I think I will hire someone or would just buy a new one unless was very expensive
Haha, not a terrible recommendation, but it wasn't too bad. To be honest, the hardest part was filming while I was doing it. Lol. Have a great day!
This reminds me of how my mom washes our rugs including the bathroom rugs. Soap, water and a good hand brush.
Awesome!
I have the same rug so this tutorial is even more helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Had to laugh a little. That is the same carpet I have and I am trying to clean. It's too cold to do this right now in WI, but I will try to spot clean with this mixture. Thanks for the vid.
Autumn Smith that’s great! Good luck and let me know how it goes.
I actually use that oxiclean all the time in my clothes. It really works wonders. Used it since I was a kid and I have never had a bad experience with it.
Awesome!
Great job! And with the science lesson at the end you can’t go wrong so you definitely got me thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great work. That’s a lot of work.
Thanks!
Hey buddy great job sorry about the so called people giving you negative feedback....👍👍👍
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Nice!
Watching it is a therapy
Glad you enjoyed!
Oxiclean works if given time...I had given up on a white hoodie with fresh tomato stains ....used oxiclean soaked 24 hrs.. twice....clean....
Awesome. That's amazing!
At any rate, it's your carpet so do whatever the hell you like.
good video, mate.
Thanks!
I use my power washer. Works great
One of the tips I love to share with others when it’s needed. Oxiclean without fragrance or added chemicals can do wonders in the home and lifestyle.
Great tip!
@@HandzforHire // It's linen. I've tried using store bought products and my cleaning machine and it just doesn't work.
Good luck!
@@HandzforHire // I'll make a call to a furniture cleaning place and let you know what they tell me. You've helped a lot, so thanks again for that.
@@Donna-vh5ym my pleasure and would love to hear when you find out.
Looks like hard work but worth it for a nice rug... good job
Thanks!
I would use a pressure washer, works great, gets rugs Clean...plus less work, hang vertically, dry in the sun, or in a hot garage.
(Also I recommend a cheap 2gal pump sprayer)
great video, can oxi clean clean cuffs and hem on a red jacket without colour damage and then throwing to washing machine
Thanks! Great question, and OxiClean is safe on colors. It is chlorine free which is the chemical that normally does damage to color on clothing. Good luck!
Looks good. One lady demonstrated her cleaning outside on a table and she left it outside for 3 days to dry in heat. Can you use it on dark carpet?
Thanks! Oxyclean is color safe, so I don't see why not! Have a great day!
Watched 5 different videos and this is the best one! Could I line dry a rug or will it crease? Because it's already cold ❄️ in Michigan 🤦🏽♀️😭
Awesome! Thank you for all the tips. I'll have to try on the next round.
@@HandzforHire no problem. I learned some of those from professionals and especially since I'm starting small I have to use some old school methods to do so
@@justinchimento5654 cool. Good luck to you!
@@HandzforHire Thanks appreciate it much
Go to Bed Bath and Beyond or Walmart or Target and get a Bissel Pro Heat 2x Revolution carpet cleaner. Mix OxyClean a teaspoon dish soap alcohol if you have mites. And hot water.
Sams club sells the bissel proheat 2x for 176 bucks. You cant go wrong. Works on sofa too
Caroline Kuo thank you so much for the tips!
That carpet cleaner it way overpriced! You can make it for pennies!
I have a Hoover Powerscrub right now, but will go back to Bissell when it dies. I want a machine that has on board tools like my old Powersteamer had.
If you watch the professionals clean rugs they basically do the same thing you are doing. Good job :)
Thank you!
Thank you
"The dirt really mingles with fibers" 🤣 that made the video worth it
Great video; one question: why Glass Cleaner?
Thanks! I include it because it has ammonia which is a great stain remover. Have a great day!
Cool video, I really liked that you explained how oxiclean works at the end.
Thanks, RichHomie Tom!
wow a lot of work! worth it in the end - impossible for me though - I live in a flat in UK......
Thanks! It does take some time, but I only do it once a year. I can imagine this would be tough in a flat in the UK, but maybe you can use the solution for some spot cleaning. Have a great day!
That have come out brilliantly. Looks as new. I would of cleaned the back first then turn the rug over and do exactly what you did here. X
Thanks Cheryl! You're right. I did vacuum the back first, but didn't film it. I recently made a follow-up video on the same rug if you want to check it out. ruclips.net/video/HzHwarjdW4E/видео.html Have a great day!!
Don't give up on this Channel!
I've been looking for a rug cleaning video forever! Maybe if the title said 'rug' instead of 'carpet" lol ....thank you for this !!
Nice to see you learned a few things from casey.
Haha, you noticed! I am a big fan of Casey's vlog style and you can see his influences in my videos. I wish Casey would make more videos again, but I understand that his NYC schedule and lifestyle almost destroyed him and his family. Thanks for checking in!
Would you recommend using Oxiclean in a carpet cleaner instead of the the various carpet cleaning solutions?
Hi David, I actually just published another video cleaning the same carpet with various methods; one of which is using Oxiclean in a carpet cleaner. ruclips.net/video/HzHwarjdW4E/видео.html
@@HandzforHire OMG! I'm so excited to see this. Thank you!
davidhunternyc thanks! I hope you like it.
That’s A Lot of work!
Builds character! Lol.
You also had an extra added element in your process, as you let the carpet dry outside in the sun... UV rays have disinfectant and bleaching properties. With the OXI clean turning into Hydrogen peroxide this would have a bleaching effect...
True, good call. I guess it's a good thing for lighter rugs. Lol.
You clean tha carpet realky well but there is an easy r way. Good job.
Isabel Hernandez thanks!
Can this work on rubber front entrance mats , or would you recommend it ?!? Jus asking since I got a rubber front entrance mat thats constantly being urinated by our dog .. thx
I imagine so!
Breaking it down each thing is always best for me lol. Thank you!!
You are welcome! I actually just released a video cleaning the same carpet 14 months later. My homemade solution is better explained in the description of the video. ruclips.net/video/HzHwarjdW4E/видео.html Thanks for watching!
Are you sure you're not related to Felix Unger? Haha! Omgosh, you cleaned that carpet like a maniac, every little corner and then some. Excellent job. Now please come to my house and do my carpets.
Haha, that's not the first time I've heard that comment. Thank you!
Nice break down...Love the science lesson!!
Thanks!
Problem is, that needs to be completely rinsed out or the dirt will build back up on the areas that still have a lot of soap in it. Before shop vac use, rinse thoroughly, pull water out again. Then shop vac.
No offense meant, if I had children and pets I wouldn't want a white carpet. I have used oxy clean on colored carpets and got great results.
🤣 no offense taken. I know it’s a losing battle, but an annual cleaning does the trick. Glad you have had success with OxiClean.
By the way reg laundry detergent would've don't job no plastic on bottom needed also fabric softener wouldn't helped with rinse and made everything smell goooood. I shampoo my rug this way. Lovely watching you help your wife.
Thanks for the feedback! I just recently made a second video comparing a few methods. One thing I'm using less of is vinegar and may completely replace with fabric softener next time. ruclips.net/video/HzHwarjdW4E/видео.html
This was great! I would've have mixed a light amount of bleach in the water for a white carpet like that! Just wear water boots and gloves 😉👍❤
Thanks so much!
If you put some Lenore into the mixture it will soften it up and smell lovely when it’s dried🙏🏼😇
Great video
Thanks!
Love this video. The drying part takes forever! Should have done this with the 100 degree Texas summer weather instead of waiting for fall. Lol. I am subscribing because you used Anchor Man quotes as well as great music that inspires me to clean. 👍
Thanks so much! I figured why not have fun with it. Lol. Yes, the drying is the toughest part!
Use fans if possible
I'll try this today. In the middle of July in texas with 102° lol
Would this work for cleaning a couch or mattress using a Biselle ProHeat steam cleaner with accesories?
I have used this for spot cleaning couches. Just do not use on wool. Good luck!
Good job, got the job done, but there is a potential for dirt to accumulate even more quickly.
By far the best solution is pure deionised water. Get some and try it on your windows... You'll be amazed.
Michael thanks for the suggestion. It would have taken a lot of deionized water for this rug, but I couldn't agree more! Deionized water is amazing on windows! ruclips.net/video/30RXl9C0uKk/видео.html
