Alongside my favourite famous superstar guitarists in huge bands, You really are one of my main inspirations to play and I strive to learn to play how you do. You really should be in a huge band headlining stadiums - most jams you do blow me away. I feel if you were born in the right place and the right time you would be. Thanks for all you do Dave. I love you we all love you
As an amateur garage band false notes player, I use both a g5n and a g3xn simultaneously for venues. I have my g5n set up so I use it as a 4 effects at a time + expression pedal board, including noise gate and compressor, and the g3xn sports my amp simulations and after effects. With 7 accessible toggles and 2 expression pedals available at any one time, I can't say it's a true pedal board, but for 500$ that's certainly about the best you can get. And you can set different patches for different situations; that's like having about 150 (and counting) potentially different pedal boards at your disposal. Be it all different pedals altogether or just slightly significant variations of the same old loved ones, you are served as you like it at the press of a button. As long as you can find effects to suit your style, of course (I still can't get a satisfying, chugging and cutting metal sound out of them for the life of me).
It's such a joy to see you just doing your thing. Your honesty, your determination to get it right...to me you're one of the few examples of how it works: blood, sweat and tears, trail and error. Just by showing these kind of videos you illustrate that being a guitarist (musician) is a lot of hard work. No glamour, sex, drugs or rock and roll. Let this be a lesson to all of us and especially for those who think you only need talent...😎👍
To get two different types of technology, sounding that close is a miracle. This is another video where you teach us to ignore the values we see and just listen for the right setting. Also, of course, what to change to get what we want and when to switch to a different effect, if one isn't right. Many Thanks Dave!
Mate, after each pedal on the Zoom, just put in a Eq pedal and match your original pedal boards tone by boosting or sculpting the eq. Play around with the position of the eq in the chain. That's what a lot of pros do 😀👍
Just really nice to spend time in your company, Dave. If RUclips burned to the ground and I could only dash in and save one channel, it would be yours.
I was going to choose a Vox Tonelab, old but good sounding board, but the way You playied the U.S. hymn exactly the way Hendrix did in another video of Yours, plus versatility, made me to choose this Zoom!! Oh, btw, great comparison.
not really a gearhead myself but i watch your videos to support you dave cuz i respect what you and i want to do what i can to help you. good intro and good day
The scrolling is a problem, I have the G3X which has three effect windows at a time out of 6 total. I have noticed a partial solution built into the unit which may also apply to the G5n. When a patch is stored/saved, the scrolled position is saved too. In other words, Comp and ZNR could be in the put in the 1st and 2nd positions, then the user scrolls over 2 effects leaving 3 (3,4,5) empty effect windows showing. Then store/save the patch, whenever you recall that patch, it will be already scrolled to 3,4,5 showing. It's a partial solution.
Edit & Share helps for the older pedals - albeit most folks won't want to take a laptop to a gig. I have been reverse engineering most of the pedals (older G5, MS-70 CDR, B1On) and newer ones (B1XFour, G1XFour, G3n, G5n and my fave the GCE-3 that can emulate all of the above) controlled from a Raspberry Pi4. Really versatile pedals.
Wow, that's admirable, I love RPis. I used to be into finding ways just for the fun of it but lately, I'm really tired. Good for you though. Best of luck!
I could be mistaken, but I thought Amp Modelling was designed to replaced amps and to be used DI into a PA or Audio Interface. Maybe you'd get a better tone if the Amp model section was bypassed and you used the Zoom's FX models straight into the MG. Just a thought.
Agreed! If Dave's comparing his pedal board into the front of his Marshall, he can just set the Zoom up as a chain of effects and leave out the amp model and put that through the front end. I use a Zoom G5N in my covers band and initially just used effects into the front of my amp. For more variety I've recently set up about half a dozen different patches with effects and an amp model but now go through the effects loop return straight into the power amp, bypassing the pre-amp.
Plugging the output of an amp modeller into a guitar amp connected to a guitar speaker is idio... not clever. You have a guitar and an amp modeller - BOTH of which are capable of producing frequencies beyond the capabilities of ANY dedicated guitar speaker. No wonder it sounds different, as you're essentially clipping it. Plug a modeller, physical or a software-based, into a big Bose L1 or a similar full-range, flat response amp/speaker and be amazed by what your guitar is capable of.
I'm glad to see that you still prefer your main pedal board :) Because after finding your channel some years back (when you reviewed the Orange Crush 20 RT) and following you ever since, AND after buying basically -- because of your sound! -- a Marshall MG100HDFX half stack, an Orange CR120 (with PPC412) and your analog pedals (Zoom G2.1u, Line6 DL4, Boss DS2, Guv'nor 2Plus etc. pp.) over the years -- I am unwilling to follow you into the lands of this new black plastic creature board! :P Cheers Dave, you and noone else got me into guitar playing (and massive G.A.S.)!
Just discover you keep your gear and make good use at its best capabilities. You earned my greater respect. Now I know if I open my ears give attention, I can learn a lot from you. Cheers.
I’d be at work, put in my earphones and just listen to you go on about effects, run home try to tweak my mooer ge100 and marshall mg10 as close as possible to your tone, hope to afford pedals and a bigger amp one day, love you and your content man :)
Hey Dave your doing the right thing, stick with it, as I mentioned before I use a Zoom Multi FX pedal that has the same amp and cab models and FX as your rig. It took a little while to get used to the various mixing together of the various amp/cab models and combinations and FX modules in the zoom, but now I can get some great responsive tones from the pedal, with some of the FX and amp pedal combinations. I found adding the graphic equaliser module near the front and sometimes one at the end of the patch chains can make the world of difference to bring out the desired dynamic response and tones. I am amazed at what pretty convincing amp and overdrive tones I can achieve, that added to some quality modulations including delay and reverb can produce as you have found out some amazing sounds. As I say you only need a bit of time put in to create your own patches and once created I don't tend to fiddle with them. Enjoy your new Zoom Dave. Also have you tried the Line Select module which can turn on the next module in the chain, it might work for you. Also sometimes I find putting the Compressor module in front of or even behind a distortion/overdrive module can give it a bit more of a push.in the mid and lows.
Hey dave, nice video as usual. The scrolling thing does bother me a lot too (54:20 min). There is a easy fix: I usually run the g5n in the fx loop and another multi effect in front of the amp: noise reduction, overdrive, distortion. Honestly I dont use the amp simulation (pre amp on pre amp) my jcm2000 does the plexi or jcm800 job pretty nicely. Take care brother
If you're using a real Amp too then overwrite the G5n Amp and Cab blocks with like Univibe and Delay. The patch path can be like "Guitar - [Distortion] - [Univibe] - [Delay] - [Reverb] - Amp" all four blocks matching up to the four foot-switches. There's also a Controller jack in the back for a Zoom FP-02M Expression Pedal were you can assign it to control the Univibe level effectively making it a on/off button.
Nice, natural and honest reviews, and great artistic approach to playing :'). Your videos convinced me to buy... the G11! jaja. Zoom reliability, but 1 more FS, dedicated amp controls (with no slots on the FS interface), and avoiding that scrolling madness! (On the G11 scrolling is immediate, looks like all you would wanted? -even a touchscreen jaj) One more sub, greetings from Perú :D
The Zoom's are great bang for the buck, been using them for years. They react to dynamics in a way I prefer to Boss and a few others. Cleaner duties in the main here and The Twin amp is the basis of almost every patch. Even the piss cheap G1Xon has some great sounds in it and works great with my piezo acoustic and slide in a busking setup with a usable looper thrown in.
I own three (5, 3, 1). I do live gigs with a 5 going to a 3 - 5 does pedals, 3 does amps and after effects. That's all I need personnaly; they're pretty adequate hardware-wise so long I can find the sounds I'm looking after. The 1 I keep home for practice and research; I am considering either doubling it or upgrading either the 5 or the 3 and bringing it back home. They all use the same effects pool, so I don't have to bring the whole kit back from every practice to experiment or fine-tune.
@@EddieOtool I've literally just finished an ambient pedalboard setup which needed to be battery based. Using a powerbank and two 5V-9V converters I have an A1X Four >EHX Superego>MS50G>Ditto4>JamMan XT with a G1Xon that was sitting doing nothing on the Send/Return of the Superego which turns it into a whole different ballgame with the pedal and effects options. Bought them all sechand and compared to some pedalboards has cost peanuts. A friend has a reverb that cost about the same as the whole board and this has FAR more flexibility with sound-mangling and pad creation. Also, going the powerbank route has solved any noise issues to my satisfaction. Looks like we've both gone the two unit route and split effects/cabs/etc and, like you say, having a common workflow saves so much time. I wouldn't swap this for a Helix/whatever if it was offered just wanna make music.
@@Tomlinsky Good stuff. The G1on with a battery pack goes a long way; plug it in a bluetooth speaker wich has an aux input, and you've got the most portable setup that exists.
@@EddieOtool Aye. Running it into a Yam THR can play a small solo set anywhere. Forgot to mention, the JamMan XT at the end of the chain doubles as a 10 minute recorder with 200 slots available. Get back home, put card in comp. Jobs a good 'un! Also, made a cable up that MIDI syncs pre-recorded material with the Ditto!
Thanks for your honest review. You mentioned that it is annoying to scroll up/down to adjust individual effects in a patch. Well, if you could hook it up to an android phone or PC then you’d be able to see all 9 slots in one shot (I think). If it is for live application, then I suggest the following (I don’t own the G5n but basing this on the million review videos I have seen). Assuming you don’t need more than 4 effects to be switched on/off in a song, you can make a patch and copy it four times and in each patch switch on/off individual effects/stomp boxes as needed and save the patches say at location 001, 002, 003, and 004. So now you can get up to four tones in song without scrolling (in memory mode). Between songs, you can switch to another set say 005,006, 007, and 008, etc to get different tones. Since there are 200 memory slots, it should not be a problem creating such several groups of 4 patches.
I use that way even on my Digitech RP360XP which has three footswitches to turn off/on three effects in the chain. I have the delay, the modulaton effect and the compressor/overdrive/distortion on it in all patches. Then I have three to four identical patches (amp/cab) each for a specific setup (guitar type) in a row so I can have three or four combinations of effects. In one I might have a Boss chorus clone in the next a uni-vibe for the modulation effects part and similar for overdrives etc. Thats perfect for onstage use.
This cures Daves problem but am I right is saying that to use the looper, that is part of the preset so you couldn’t change the preset without loosing your loop?
@@lupo10 I think that is true and perhaps is standard rant for many G5n users. For me it was a kind of a deal breaker. Although, I read on FB forums that if two patches both have a looper then if you change the patch the loop continues but I can't test it obviously. Personally, I am not convenice if that will work based on the concept of the looper in G5n, which is ridculous, I might add. Currenlty, I use a Zoom G1Xon and overall like it but it's getting old and just wanted some new tones, so was searching for a new multi-fx pedal, and my first choice was G5n and second, Mooer GE150. However, accidently I came across the newly launched NUX MG-300. After seeing almost all the reivews, I finally ordered it (delivery awaited). It is much cheaper than G5n and should do the job. Nothing against G5n - it has great tones from what I hear.
@@lupo10 In my case(Digitech RP3060xp) no I dont lose the loop if I change the preset. My looper is not part of the preset its present in all presets anytime. And the sound is what preset was used when looping. But I have to use an external drum machine because the drum machine and the looper dont work at the same time on my Digitech RP360XP. They are exclusive.
I circumvented many of those problems by sending my g5 through a g3. g3 manages amps and after effects; g5 does pedals, noise gate, compression and expression. Honestly, that's enough hadware for me, and I have a reputation of being quite whizzy. Inbefore doubling the pedals, I always felt too restricted; but never since.
After watching this and your other videos about the g5n I ordered one today. I did research on the g11 also but I got to say this was the better deal for the price of 329.00 compared to the 800.00 g11. There wasn’t much difference in sounds. Almost 500.00 more doesn’t justify the touch screen. I’m happy with this purchase.
G5n it's a huge deal I'm in that dilemma... but G11 is not only a G5n plus touchscreen. It has one more FS-it sounds not that much but can add possibilities, also two free slots in the middle (because of the amp controls that leave those free) and even the scrolling madness disappears because the scrolling is now totally immediate (Not 1 or 2 seconds), also IR possibilities. Or maybe, just maybe... I'm convincing myself to pay near $500 more for that beautiful convenience :'( jajaj.
A very admirable attempt Dave but your analogue board still nails it for me...what a tone with that DS2 and the Guvnor. That’s what does my head in with multi fx units chasing tone all the time, and I love zoom products too but my brain just can’t cope with them.
Thanks, got my G1x4 going a bit better for the night. I have a G5n and G11 coming for price to value and functionality test. My gripe so far is not being able to assign effects with my discretion to what sub lcd switch. I wish more products had the instant row of knobs for at least four pedals. The rotary encoders like on the quad cortex would make other brands more to my process.
I have a number of zooms. G3, and 2 g1 onx's. The mic on the can sim is for DI, if your running into an amp turn the mic off. Wherever I leave a patch, as far as scrolling, it open again in the same spot. I use the zooms and some stomp boxes into two Fender Mustang setup in a funky wet dry/stereo setup. Love the Zoom, it took a while to get good time out of it.
One solution is just saving two presets, one with delay and the other dry, so you just have to switch one or the other preset...wth the G5n is not practical thinking in terms of "effects chain", but use it more as "presets". Anyway, sometimes is very useful the expression pedal, to activate one effect (for example using the delay in the pedal)
@@CentaurusRelax314 you have hit the nail: you can activate reverbs and delays tails, BUT that only works when you press the efect INTO the preset, not when you go to another preset. To me that´s not a problem anyway, cause the presets change is very smooth and there´s not "gap" at all. I´ve been using this unit since about two years and is very cool for many reasons. But to me, to get "punch" and "balls", valve pedals and preamps are better option than modelers, even for DI recording. Anyway, every kind of gear is useful, it depends of the sound you are looking for ...
@@accentontheoff Sorry-I have no idea. I never owned one of these. Not sure why i was even commenting, unless it was to perhaps offer a solution to someone else. Maybe reply directly to Eduardo?
Although I think the zoom does sound awesome there is still a digital modelly (if that's a word) sounding low end frequency that I just always associate with digital modellers. I love Dave's pedalboard more and I think the way his pedals are set it the Dave Simpson Trademark tone!
Technical "imperfection" and tolerances of those good old pedals let the sound come alive in terms of dynamic & compression... You can't beat the real thing!
what I done when setting the patch.wha amp delay delay reverb... when saveing the patch..wha on control on and off from the pedal for on off .save patch from left hand side showing.boost from amp delay delay reverb boost.normal reverb to right hand side not showing...so not to have to scroll.....it's limited but no scrolling.....I think we're zoom really nailed this machine is the construction guitar players love it.black box with lights sexy... compact...but you can't use to meny effects live witch is a shame.great vid got me thinking.....
Yeah, the scroll function is really annoying. Because of that, I prefer having more patches with fewer effects in each patch because. I'm only using two or three different patches for a song anyway. That aside, I'm loving the amp sims and FX options. I particularly love the dynamics pedals, which allow for some marvellous clean tones. Also, NYC fuzz + JCM800
I've been experimenting with digital and analog effects (single treadmills and multi-effects units) for probably 30 years. In the end I always came back to my own assembled board for live gigs, although it is heavier, more error-prone and ugly than most multi-effects units. Even if newer digital effects are better now: especially the distortion / overdrive effects sound rather bad in the multi-effects units live over the amp. Too glaring, too flat or too muddy. Even though I always turn off the speakers and amp sims, of course. However, the multi-EFX have the advantage that they are light and smaller than a self-assembled board. Besides, if you want to make the time investment, you can prepare ready-made patches for each song for a gig. This can be useful. Where I find multi-EFX really useful is for home recording and where you don't want to or can't use a big amplifier. For direct into the desk or into a DAW, the Multi-Efx sound very good and have a lot of sound possibilities that you can't have on an analog board. Is also a matter of taste. If I do not have much time and space at a gig, or no transporter (car / truck) is available, such a Multi EFX can be the solution. Often less is more - whether digital or analog: For many gigs an overdrive, a chorus, a reverb, tremolo, phaser and wah wah is enough. You can do a lot with that. I use the ME-80 as well as the Zoom G3X - but now ordered the G5n.
David, you should use the patch/memory bank mode on the G5N. You don't have to keep scrolling all the time. The zoom has 4 switches, so you can have up to 4 patches easily accessible.
The original old Zoom G5 had several global settings that adjusts it depending on what you're plugging into (direct, front of amp, effects return, combo amp, amp stack etc) .... Not sure if the Zoom G5n has the same, but maybe check it in the manual or poke around in the menus for it. You might find it sounding better or closer to what you expect when that's adjusted. Also, as another person commented already, if you're running it into an amp and if you're using the amp sims, either ensure the clean channel is neutral as possible or run it straight into the effects return bypassing your amp's preamp. Either way bypass the cab sim, as you already have that covered with a real cab/speakers.
make 2 identical patches: 1 with delay, 1 without. Now you don't need to scroll. patches 3 and 4 can be with univibe (and whatever else you like). fixed.
I had this thing until yesterday, you may do this in the video. I'm early on so don't know. When choosing cabs make sure the mic is on. Sounds night and day. I have ton of love for the zoom but I bought a 5150 and a Katana so between those 2 I'm covered. Hint, you can do stuff you can't in real life like use an overdrive straight into a cab with no amp.
Alright Dave great Video as usual detailing all the pros & cons, had my eye on either a G3XN/G3N or G5N for a while but life is hard at moment and I’m really skint no matter how hard I work!! I desperately need a multi effects unit to play with my band cos been lending pedals from mates when I can so constantly using different pedals all the time, which obviously is annoying!! Due to some little scrote in Manchester nicking my Line 6 M13 which despite being big I loved. So I need to bite the bullet and buy something even though I shouldn’t really but the music matters!! I can either get a used G5N for £120 or a Line 6 M9 for £110 I tempted to go for the G5N but then think M9????? Ahhhh!!! Not sure which to one to hit the button and go for? If you can mate please can you advise and tell me what you would go for? Cheers Steve
I’d personally go with the zoom but with your history with the m13 I really don’t know. Maybe try the zoom before you buy to see if you get on with it.
@@thedavesimpson thanks for your reply and opinion Dave much appreciated, the Zoom is the one I was really steering towards and I might buy just an M5 when I can afford one and can pick up a cheap used one. Cheers mate have a good one.
Zoom is a great excuse to not bothering bringing your amp and pedals and mic for gigs and then not getting paid what you deserved and feel like a donkey... I ordered and I'll just plug it in the mixer You know the feeling after gig you just want to go to your car without packing up your heavy staff and go home as quick as possible :) So the zoom g5n is the gear brother and your talent of playing guitar and you are great guitarist... 🤠🎸
Dave I find when using a real amp, using amp modeling sounds muddy, I use the FX only option in my Pod HD 400, and find it sounds a lot better. I only use the amp modeling when I am recording direct without an amp, btw you sold me on the zoom.
Hey Dave! I was wondering if some point if you would be able to do a video where you show us how to input a full effect chain into the G5n, I bought the G3xn and it’s great, but I’m finding it rather difficult to navigate! Cheers, fellow Guitarman, Joe. 😀
This is such a cool video :) If the amps settings have low treble maybe thats why you need the treble higher on the actual board? Also recent or modern metal pedals have so much more mids now cause modern metal is VERY middy, I think you might like lots of the newer metal pedals! Maybe try some out :) very punchy and middy and cutting just as you like! Btw I think the Zoom sounded very good maxed but your pedal board sounds epic, i love the characteristics of the distortion compared to the g5 but its pretty close :) I wanna hear some more distortion settings and amp models! haha
Great video! Quick questions! 1) for the "clean:" sound from the Zoom..since both the analog board and the Zoom are going into the Marshall why is there any difference...or do you have an analog pedal on as part of your clean sound? 2) are you using just this Metal pedal to approximate the sound of both your analog gain pedals? Thanks again, love this!
Interesting, I found that the clean was wayyyy better with the actual pedal board but I thought your distorted tone was 10 times better on the zoom. It was so much tighter and less flabby
the only distortion effect I used on the g5n was the metalworld. Good tones. Do you get a slight pause when you use the footswitches to select patches? If not you can put delay on one patch and the other patch without delay so you don't have to scroll.
Dave a very interesting exercise and compulsive viewing. . I've learnt a lot about multieffects pedals but I haven't changed my mind. Personally, pedals win hands down. Life's too short to spend hours on micro-tweaking. The pedals sound authoritative to me, whilst the multieffects unit sounds kind of apologetic! Pedals dial-in in a few minutes' adjustment and their controls are usually far less sensitive to small changes. The other thing to bear in mind is reliability - are you going to buy a back-up ZOOM? Thanks for a great video!
i was thinking about getting the Zoom G5n but i like to see what i am adjusting so i went for the BOSS ME-80 i have only had it for about 4 weeks so still tweaking it but so far it dose every thing that i want and with all the built in pedal sounds i think it might give the G5n a run for it's money i love it you should check one out Dave
Have you heard of the terminated headphone plug trick to make the ME-80 sound better coming out the main outputs? The terminated plug enables a really good speaker simulation made for the headphones but it also affects the main outputs making them sound better too! There should be YT videos showing just how to do it.
Damn, I’m a new fan. So many demo of tube amp sounding like $hit on RUclips, even from well known guys. You can make transistor stuff to sound very good. I feel it might be because the ability of adjusting the gear and the nuances in the playing of the instrument. Hat off. From a guy with 30 years of experience in guitar, gear and stuff.
Hey Dave, just saw this video last night, it sounds fine, it's strange all the settings have to be maxed out to get the desired sound. As for the scrolling hassles, at 1st I thought just plug in an external control switch and assign it to the effect but, unlike the G3x, the G5n with only accept an expression pedal on the control jack. Zoom has had this scrolling interface for at least 9 years and they don't seem to care about ease of use. I have some ideas that I sent to them concerning improvements to the interface of all their units that use scrolling. I`ll put it in the next comment. Tell me if you think the changes would improve the usefulness of scrolling.
Great video Dave. I've just got a G3XN and found the Metal pedal to be the one to give me the distortion sound I want and like you, I wouldn't have picked a metal pedal... Ever. Maybe Zoom labled the pedal wrong haha.
I have the g3n in my front room into a micro terror and a celestion vintage and it has some good tones in it at lower volumes so its good for noodling. I also still have my zoom 505 which was my first pedal i ever bought back in the 90's and i also have my boss metal zone, The metalwrld on the zoom is an emulation of the metal zone. Just buy a metal zone you know you want to.
I own another pedal from Zoom, the G1xOn and it has also the Boss Metal Zone model (MetalWRLD,i use Dist,Tone and Volume on 100) and it behaves really well on simulating the DS2,though sadly no pedal sings and sounds like it
You would be close with stock , especially with your fingers if you nail down that “ trickfinger sound “ . Vintera series is very good for the money , however I would put Tex mex pickups in it , mainly just the neck if anything , thank me later 👍
The vintera has some beastly pickups, very raw vintage sounding. If you it's in your budget, get a vintera. If not, a squier cv is also great for a frusciante tone (y)
For me, I just don't use the amp or cab models. I use my modified version of your John Fru settings on my katana as well as the katana's reverb and delay. So then I just use the effects on the G5n (looper, dynamics, wah, distortion, fuzz, chorus, univibe)
I might sound crazy but the Boss blues driver with the neck pickup really sounds so much like Frusciante , it gives that on the verge of breakup sound mixed with clean & bridge pick up is boosted as well ( certain songs only like can’t stop ) but mainly for neck & middle pups .
I have a Zoom G3Xn and a Marshall half stack with an effects loop. I was wondering how you get your sound so good. Are you fronting or are you going through the effects loop? If going through the effects loop could you tell me how to wire it?
hi, i got this pedalboard, i think you need to put the tone and bost knobs at 12 o'clock and setting again the pedals after, the boost it's not a boost, controls the lows and low mids
@@lamms6957 yeah i used to think that, but the tones are weak, i turn the boost all the way down for months but i tried to put at 12 and all the body i was missing was there
How do you make it not sound fuzzy and all the string noise and stuff? I set up my g1 four the same but it just doesn't sound the same. I'm clearly missing something lol
Dave, I have a question. Can you run, the guitar through the Marshall (I like the 4 channels on my MG50CFX), then out the effects loop into the multi effect and just add the pedals you want without the amp modelling to cut down on the scrolling? Trying to work out if I should get a Zoom or one of those Mooer GE200’s.
I’ve ordered the Zoom with a couple of guitar cables to find out for myself. This has taken an early Christmas present from the wife. Don’t think I’ve managed to do that as early as September the 1st before 😂
In answer to my own question. Yeah I can. So I bought it as I wanted a looper and a drum machine. The Boss RC-10 had both things I needed but it was £50 more than the Zoom so I went with the loom. I can confirm that: Guitar into the front of the amp, this gave me access to clean, crunch OD1 and OD2 and the digital effects that I like in the MG. Zoom in the pedal loop, created a patch with RC Drive, that awesome metal pedal, drum machine, double slot Mono Looper and the Waw100. I also tried it into the front only the amp which I loved too. Think I’ll just swap around, when I want the amp models I can run it into the front end of the manual channel and go back to the loop when I don’t need them. Awesome bit of kit. Only been playing a couple of months, uploaded a video yesterday of my first loop I created when it got delivered if anyone is bothered.
Hi Dave I’m thinking on getting one of these for my Katana mainly for the expression pedal tuner and looper.I want to put in into the effects loop. Do you think it’ll work well with the amp? and will i be able to use the expression pedal for master volume? Cheers mate!
As for the scrolling back and forth to quickly change or turn off a single pedal: if you can't do it from the normal screen without scrolling, you can copy and paste identical patches next to each other, leave one with the desired pedal off, and switch back and forth from the pach select screen without going into the patch. On my g5 I can select from 3 patches so you may get an extra one, not sure. I use it one for clean and the others for fx

Well said
To get two different types of technology, sounding that close is a miracle.
That's what a lot of pros do 😀👍
Good solution!

Is that from a song?
@@spookyskeleton3379 Idk... It would be a really good song, though :D

I've missed the white strat. Beautiful intro
Fantastic. This is how I setup my own stuff, but without the success rate. This helps.
Just ordered my first pedal in a long, long time - a looper. Wish me luck. (this old dog must be barking trying to learn new tricks !).
Youl only hear Your playing........better to get abit drunk and think of a soulmate...
not really a gearhead myself but i watch your videos to support you dave cuz i respect what you and i want to do what i can to help you. good intro and good day
Love how mistakes are taken as part of an everything and not edited. Awesome company this channel. Saludos!
This could be my most favourite and inspiring intro jam u have done. incredible.
This is how tutorials should be "indepth but simply explained"...gr8 work yet again..👍🤘🤘🤘🤘
6:50 you smile because you press the buttons
Just discover you keep your gear and make good use at its best capabilities. You earned my greater respect. Now I know if I open my ears give attention, I can learn a lot from you. Cheers.
I’d be at work, put in my earphones and just listen to you go on about effects,
run home try to tweak my mooer ge100 and marshall mg10 as close as possible to your tone, hope to afford pedals and a bigger amp one day,
love you and your content man :)
Love your playing, has some real gritty snot to it but emotive too.
May I ask...Do you plug into an amp or computer?
@@jamesrobert4106 Hi, I plug into an amp, a solid state amp actually.
Thanks for this Dave! the analog sure does sound better overall. I kind of want to see you do this with the Boss Katana now with a GA-FC footswitch.
Damn dude, you inspire me to grab my axe everytime. !!!! Alot of your stuff is just incredible !!! TY Bro,,,so glad I found this channel! 😎✌✝💕
I'm so happy to hear that. :)
Dear lawd, that intro jam. 😮
You are wrong. G5n have a Price from 220 to 240 e, I was buy it before 7 mounts....
Great killer tone
I have a number of zooms. G3, and 2 g1 onx's. The mic on the can sim is for DI, if your running into an amp turn the mic off. Wherever I leave a patch, as far as scrolling, it open again in the same spot.
I use the zooms and some stomp boxes into two Fender Mustang setup in a funky wet dry/stereo setup.
Love the Zoom, it took a while to get good time out of it.
ZOOM does have the g11, would be an interesting review
Really interesting Dave. Great to see your process. Thanks 👍👍❤️
That's what i was about to suggest, but do you know that the Zoom doesn't have an audio 'gap' when switching presets? And do reverb tails continue?
@@CentaurusRelax314 you have hit the nail: you can activate reverbs and delays tails, BUT that only works when you press the efect INTO the preset, not when you go to another preset. To me that´s not a problem anyway, cause the presets change is very smooth and there´s not "gap" at all. I´ve been using this unit since about two years and is very cool for many reasons. But to me, to get "punch" and "balls", valve pedals and preamps are better option than modelers, even for DI recording. Anyway, every kind of gear is useful, it depends of the sound you are looking for ...
@@eduardoallo8786 I second all of this
@@CentaurusRelax314 Sorry, so is there or isn’t there a time lag when switching between presets.
Stunning intro.
Classic guitar man........awesome. Glad I found you. May get the Zoom G5n. What buttons do I push to make me play like you...:)
I like to use the "Exciter" effect on my Zoom G5n. It guives a lot of life to the sound.
You should try.
Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘
Same here
David, you should use the patch/memory bank mode on the G5N.
Good comparison
make 2 identical patches: 1 with delay, 1 without. Now you don't need to scroll. patches 3 and 4 can be with univibe (and whatever else you like). fixed.
Great playing as usual dave, could you do a video, using the g5 into the katana please?
I had this thing until yesterday, you may do this in the video. I'm early on so don't know. When choosing cabs make sure the mic is on. Sounds night and day. I have ton of love for the zoom but I bought a 5150 and a Katana so between those 2 I'm covered. Hint, you can do stuff you can't in real life like use an overdrive straight into a cab with no amp.
“Ive lost my mind already...... whats new? “
that got me man hahahahaha
Great comparison dave thanks 🙏
Alright Dave great Video as usual detailing all the pros & cons, had my eye on either a G3XN/G3N or G5N for a while but life is hard at moment and I’m really skint no matter how hard I work!! I desperately need a multi effects unit to play with my band cos been lending pedals from mates when I can so constantly using different pedals all the time, which obviously is annoying!! Due to some little scrote in Manchester nicking my Line 6 M13 which despite being big I loved.
So I need to bite the bullet and buy something even though I shouldn’t really but the music matters!! I can either get a used G5N for £120 or a Line 6 M9 for £110
I tempted to go for the G5N but then think M9?????
I ordered and I'll just plug it in the mixer
You know the feeling after gig you just want to go to your car without packing up your heavy staff and go home as quick as possible :)
So the zoom g5n is the gear brother
and your talent of playing guitar and you are great guitarist...
This is such a cool video :)
If the amps settings have low treble maybe thats why you need the treble higher on the actual board?
Also recent or modern metal pedals have so much more mids now cause modern metal is VERY middy, I think you might like lots of the newer metal pedals! Maybe try some out :) very punchy and middy and cutting just as you like!
Btw I think the Zoom sounded very good maxed but your pedal board sounds epic, i love the characteristics of the distortion compared to the g5 but its pretty close :) I wanna hear some more distortion settings and amp models! haha
Thanks for the comparison, that was really interesting. The Zoom sounds really good, but all that scrolling, I wish it came with its own scribe!🤔
Dat intro, Dave. 👏 - pretty.
Cheers for the inspiration. 👍🏻
Excellente vidéo comme toujours 😁🤘
Dave a very interesting exercise and compulsive viewing. . I've learnt a lot about multieffects pedals but I haven't changed my mind. Personally, pedals win hands down. Life's too short to spend hours on micro-tweaking. The pedals sound authoritative to me, whilst the multieffects unit sounds kind of apologetic! Pedals dial-in in a few minutes' adjustment and their controls are usually far less sensitive to small changes. The other thing to bear in mind is reliability - are you going to buy a back-up ZOOM? Thanks for a great video!
I wont be buying a second zoom no. :)
i was thinking about getting the Zoom G5n but i like to see what i am adjusting so i went for the BOSS ME-80 i have only had it for about 4 weeks so still tweaking it but so far it dose every thing that i want and with all the built in pedal sounds i think it might give the G5n a run for it's money i love it you should check one out Dave

Hat off. From a guy with 30 years of experience in guitar, gear and stuff.
they have to do a dedicated button for delay,so you can press it no matter where the delay is located, just on off
Hey Dave, just saw this video last night, it sounds fine, it's strange all the settings have to be maxed out to get the desired sound.
Great Stuff Dave...What Flanger Pedal would you recommend Dave ?
Great video Dave. I've just got a G3XN and found the Metal pedal to be the one to give me the distortion sound I want and like you, I wouldn't have picked a metal pedal... Ever. Maybe Zoom labled the pedal wrong haha.
After owning one for 3 years - I would say that is fairly good. I really rather use BIAS fx, than the zoom g5n any time to be honest.
Zoom could not find a better spokes person, I really hope the next zoom video if fully sponsored by them.
I own another pedal from Zoom, the G1xOn and it has also the Boss Metal Zone model (MetalWRLD,i use Dist,Tone and Volume on 100) and it behaves really well on simulating the DS2,though sadly no pedal sings and sounds like it
What's the amp here?
Hi Dave Do you think I could get the Frusciante tone with a Fender Vintera '60s Strat combined with the wah and ds2? Sorry for the random message
You would be close with stock , especially with your fingers if you nail down that “ trickfinger sound “ . Vintera series is very good for the money , however I would put Tex mex pickups in it , mainly just the neck if anything , thank me later 👍
Definitely. :)
@@thedavesimpson cheers dude
The vintera has some beastly pickups, very raw vintage sounding. If you it's in your budget, get a vintera. If not, a squier cv is also great for a frusciante tone (y)
Now I am chasing the Dave Simpson guitar tone. ;)
Can comparison with boss me80 and pedals????
I hope that since you are seemingly running it into your Marshall, you need to have and Cab/IR off.
For me, I just don't use the amp or cab models. I use my modified version of your John Fru settings on my katana as well as the katana's reverb and delay. So then I just use the effects on the G5n (looper, dynamics, wah, distortion, fuzz, chorus, univibe)
no bs video, thanks
Awesome man! What overdrive would you recommend if I play still like Jimi, Frusciante etc?
I might sound crazy but the Boss blues driver with the neck pickup really sounds so much like Frusciante , it gives that on the verge of breakup sound mixed with clean & bridge pick up is boosted as well ( certain songs only like can’t stop ) but mainly for neck & middle pups .
Tone city golden plexi or the marshall jackhammer. :)
Cool Shirt Dave!
Dave, what were the G2.1u settings in those comparisons? Or did you just bypass it?
I have a Zoom G3Xn and a Marshall half stack with an effects loop. I was wondering how you get your sound so good. Are you fronting or are you going through the effects loop? If going through the effects loop could you tell me how to wire it?
I'm going into the front end of the amp. :)
Hi Dave, now after 4 years of posting this video your thoughts please: for a gig, would you use a pedalboard or go for the Zoom G5n?
Pedalboard but if i had to use the g5 i wouldn’t be put out.
hi, i got this pedalboard, i think you need to put the tone and bost knobs at 12 o'clock and setting again the pedals after, the boost it's not a boost, controls the lows and low mids
Boost should be off and tone at 12. That's the standard.
@@lamms6957 yeah i used to think that, but the tones are weak, i turn the boost all the way down for months but i tried to put at 12 and all the body i was missing was there
Sublime my man
How do you make it not sound fuzzy and all the string noise and stuff?
I can confirm that:
Guitar into the front of the amp, this gave me access to clean, crunch OD1 and OD2 and the digital effects that I like in the MG.
Only been playing a couple of months, uploaded a video yesterday of my first loop I created when it got delivered if anyone is bothered.
forget athletic scrolling. save one patch with delay and one without next to each other, go to memory mode and flip between them
Also are you stacking gain in the Zoom in a similar way like you are on the old pedal board?
Anyone know where the g1 four fits in the zoom timeline? I'm hoping/guessing it is closer to the g3 g5 vs the g2?
Hi Dave
I’m thinking on getting one of these for my Katana mainly for the expression pedal tuner and looper.I want to put in into the effects loop. Do you think it’ll work well with the amp? and will i be able to use the expression pedal for master volume? Cheers mate!
I would say that it would work yeps. :)
Dave Simpson thanks for the quick reply 👍
As for the scrolling back and forth to quickly change or turn off a single pedal: if you can't do it from the normal screen without scrolling, you can copy and paste identical patches next to each other, leave one with the desired pedal off, and switch back and forth from the pach select screen without going into the patch. On my g5 I can select from 3 patches so you may get an extra one, not sure. I use it one for clean and the others for fx
You can also add other pedals in the chain and do it that way..
What's your fave loop pedal. The boss-rc30 seems pretty cool.
J. HiddenHand thanks dude. Just working though all his vids slowly. Quality stuff.
