I always have my EDC gun on my person even at home. It was my wife's idea. I think what she actually said was, "If I ever find that thing laying around, I'll get rid of it!" I used to put it in a basket on top of the fridge until a tall family friend came in and asked, "did you know there is a handgun on top of your fridge?" It's just less complicated to wear it always.

I share a similar background to you. I also retired from the Army. I differ in a couple areas in that I don't stage guns nor do I worry about any long gun. Really small house and a very channelized approach to the bedroom. I also have a lapdog as an alarm, not a deterrent. I have 2 weapons with reloads available. Really the only time I am away from either is in the shower. I do have flashlights, several, stationed where they would be available and they are charged every month. Not a fan of the weapon light as I was trained back in the dinosaur days when they didn't exist. I can see their use but am not going to go out and buy more guns to have the option. Maybe I should though, damn good excuse.

I'm with you on the simple weapons light. On, off, no cables!! On either rifles or shotties..shorties... none of my pistols have light rails, so it'll be hand held.

Good stuff Mr. Brent. I can't argue with any of that! I don't just think, I KNOW I was a better shot--much more capable and confident when I had just a couple of pistols, a pair of shotguns, one bolt action deer rifle, and OCCASIONALLY an AR. I KNEW those guns...everything about them, but ESPECIALLY where they were hitting, how they patterned out, etc. I think for about a year, I'm gonna pretend I only have half a dozen guns and really get to know them (like I used to). I too have some strategically stashed about the house. I think an AR would be a most EXCELLENT home d. weapon but I don't have a suppressor for 5.56 and setting off one in the house with no hearing pro on, there's gonna be a lot of permanent hearing loss, I think. I like PCC's. They handle like a short rifle, not nearly as loud as an AR, etc. Thanks much for this look at your set up---you just sold some magnets!!!

One note, I saw you had a voice assistant in the background. If you go into settings you can give it an emergency number. Mines set to call our 911 center if I tell it to. Can do that from any room including my garage

Everyone has there opinions on what might be the "right" gun for home defense. I would dare to say the "best" gun would be the gun that you own just Always remember your responsible for every round behind your intended target. I own many guns much like most of you watching , however the right gun for me may Not be the right gun for the next person as far as ones living conditions. Stay Armed 🇺🇸

I've carried 3 flavors of rifles. Back before everyone are trained on and qualified with AR's, a SMLE .303, a Winchester 94 in 30/30, and finally a couple of different AR's.

Wow. You go to a lot of trouble to hide guns. I just keep it simple and always carry on my person, even at home. I am always in control of it and don’t have to dash off to get it. I carry just like I did when I was a patrol officer, strong side. I can’t argue with long term familiarity.

Col. Cooper used to speak of the Sicilian "Le Pantera", the side by side hammer gun w/ short barrels and a belt of shells slung over the shoulder. If it takes 2 rounds of 12 gauge buck and still needs shootin', you'll have a minute to reload!

Well spoken! Most people do get sucked into the high-speed low-drag aspect of self-defense. As one of my mentors once said “if that’s all you got, then that’s all you got”. Sure X, Y, and Z are always better for this, that or the other scenario, but when the fight starts what you have with you is all you are going to have. Sure your custom .45 ACP 1911 (or even a MAC-10) may be a better option when someone is trying to drag you out of your car during a carjacking, but if your “big blaster” is back home in your safe and all you have with you is a 5 shot .38 J-Frame, then that is what you have to fight with.
As for rifles- if you live in an urban (or even suburban) location you are much better off with a shotgun. Spend an afternoon with a 200 foot tape measure (and you probably won’t need all of that) and measure what your likely lanes of fire would be in your house and on your property (curtilage is the legal terminology)- they will not be as long as you may think. You could measure to the street as well but remember you will have almost no self-defense argument if someone is in a car driving away (yes there are always exceptions but for the most part-).
If you are in that urban/suburban location you are most likely in a Blue political location and your self-defense argument will probably somewhat be looked down on unless someone is actually on your property- or better yet INSIDE your residence- AND obviously meaning to do you harm. A “short range” firearm is all you will need and will look better in the eyes of a jury “of your peers” (yeah good luck with that aspect) where the use of an “assault rifle” will get you painted as a crazed killer. A PCC is probably a little better since by definition it is a “Pistol Caliber”, but you never know about the prosecutor looking to make a statement or a name for themselves.
Save the rifle for your bug-out firearm for when you need to leave your home in a hurry- either due to a natural disaster or collapse of society. Well, unless you live on a farm or something else pretty rural, but in that case you are probably more worried about predators at a distance with four legs as well as two. On the farm all my “defensive” shootings have involved copperheads (shotgun) or coyote (rifle).

More and more, I sleep with the safe open next to my bed, and my edc on the night stand. If I’m just beating around the house, I almost always have cargo shorts or even my pajama pants handle a revolver in a pocket holster.

Years ago my home defense was a pistol. I considered a shotgun but never 100% warmed to the idea. Like you I live in a urban environment and it is highly unlikely for me to take a shot longer then my house (42 feet) any rifle cartridge seemed way to powerful. While I did not own one at the time a 30M1 carbine seemed the way to go This was years before PCCs. It seemed to me at the time a small light carbine in a pistol caliber would be perfect. A friend of mine bought a HK USC right after that he went through a divorce and needed money. So I got the USC for a steal while not ideal by todays standards it worked well for me for several years until I got a 300 BLK 10" AR pistol. Shooting a 200 grain subsonic round the ballistics a similar to a 45 Auto added a suppressor and a light it works well for me.

You can think of it like this. 55 grain 223 is like sending a motorcycle at 200 mph into a building. It will shatter itself and do nothing to the building. The vehicle being the bullet and the building being layers of drywall. Maybe 5 or so layers
A handgun is like a truck slamming into a building at 100mph. It will pass through quite a bit. Maybe 10 or more layers in real world
A shotgun (00buck and slug) is like a semi truck at 80mph. It will pass through all of your drywall. However if you go down to no4 buck it surprisingly becomes the exact same wall penetration as 223.

Why not just stay strapped in the house? It’s easy and comfortable and nothing is faster - when speed is the most important factor in responding to a threat.

A commenter told me to use a Ruger 10/22, bx25 magazine loaded with CCI Stingers.
I just can not take this seriously. I live in a studio condo. I have 30 feet to the front door from my bed. On the other side of my door, I have a neighbors condo. Cinderblock construction, aluminum/wood door. I know I can't use my 7.62x51 AR10. Don't wanna use my 12 gauge, only 5 rounds.
With the ruger 10/22, an intruder would be on top of me in 10 seconds. I need something with some oomf. I own a 1911 government, a 9mm, 357mag.
I worry about over penetration, my neighbors sleeping across the hall.
