Couldn't agree more! I'm coming up on one year with my M240 and I love it to death. A lot of people don't really fully process what it means to shoot through an OVF with total control over the image yet no ability to actually see the image. The connection you need to core photography skills but, also, the world itself is really empowering. You're not shown a little preview on a tiny screen, you're not managing the camera's expectations of what you want in focus, etc. You're the creative force and the camera does nothing but step aside. All failures are yours, no implicit accountability on some tech failure. All successes are yours too, a perfect alignment of a patch, an exposure triangle, an understanding of light, and nailing the moment. To me, that's a door to flow time-- my measure of success when shooting. Really, really nice photos throughout this video. Perfect mix of technically nailed shots and shots which surely feel just like the moment. Easy subscribe 🤘
Yes I love not having a preview when I take a shot - even the lack of a live view in the viewfinder makes it so much more fun! You put the feeling into words so well! Thanks for commenting 🫶
Thank you for making a video about photography which features a lot of photos taken with the gear and not only close ups of the camera itself. Enjoyed it!
My M, type 240, bought new 11 or 12 years ago was in my hands quite a lot to begin with. Then, as GAS took over, it found a quiet spot on the shelf. I started with an M9, which I remember gave me quite the nervous feeling going home with it. What did I just do?!? I just spent $7000 on a camera body, with no lens to go with it! I ended up loving that M9. Still have it, but the sensor is cracked and can not be fixed any longer. So, it now lives on my shelf. I totally agree with you on everything you have said. It's so interesting too, that I have reignited my love for the M240, I now take it with me everywhere. I don't always use it, but it's always with me. Like you say, the images are just outstanding. Once a person becomes one with the Leica M, it's something that cannot be put into words.
Very much agree! It's feels like such a difference experience shooting on an M (or to be fair, other rangefinders I've tried too!) It's amazing how long they've been going!
Bought a M monochrome (type 246) and fell in love with the Leica M system. After this experience I bought a M-P (Type 240) for all other pictures in Color. Love this cam. Carry and use it every day. Thanks for your video. Great work and pictures.
Loved watching your video and even more to listen to you ! I not often heard such a great description of “the Leica pleasure” , I totally share your feelings about the camera (even if I moved to the M11 😀)
Like you, I am using M6 and M-E 240 in parallel. IMO the M 240 has the most unique color rendition which is similar to color film even with its CMOS sensor. No other digital camera I used offers something alike. Battery life is fantastic. I don't see the need to upgrade either. You mention increased film prices - correct - I added two years ago a used monochrome M 246 for this reason which is fantastic, too.
Congrats on the new Leica. I've been using an M240 for a few years now and still absolutely adore the camera. It's still the camera I carry every single day.
THE LEICA M10: A DISCUSSION WITH STEFAN DANIEL AND JESKO VON OEYNHAUSEN In the interview, the following was mentioned: The M240 was definitely an improvement over the M9. Jesko: Yes. We improve from generation to generation, but I think there’s nothing that had to be improved compared to M 240 from the end users’ results. But I can tell you if you’re interested. If you look at the RAW files, the uncalibrated RAW files, from certain lenses that are critical, they have much less color shift or other issues, so the sensor is really solid. For users, it’s still interesting if they use Voightlander lenses for example. They might be much more usable now with this camera.
Stockpile those batteries! I’m up to 3 for my mp240, but agree that it pairs well with the M6. The most difficult thing about this is the battery barrier to me. Love this. Spoke to a guy in Leica San Francisco and we discussed the color science of their sensors from the M11 to the M240. He said that when they created this camera, Leica wanted to have it be close to an ektar look, which I see. Thought I’d share! Cheers.
Oh interesting! I've found the battery life pretty solid so far, but I am a bit nervous about how old the batteries are so it makes sense that they're degrading a bit! Grabbing a few extras is a very good idea. That's so interesting about Ektar - but makes sense to me, from the colour and the contrast level there are definitely similarities! I'm actually working on a comparison at the moment between the M6 and the M240 and Ektar is one of the film stocks I was going to test so that'll be interesting! Thanks for sharing.
I am in the USA. I found one NIB battery in HK, but they would not ship it? Then during another deep Google search found (4) NIB in California, and bought them all for both my m240 & 246.
Ooh, I’m intrigued. I still remember loving using my Mum’s old Kodak camera, then my next favourite Nikon D300 and 50mm f1.4 - that changed everything. I still use it for personal stuff but not as often as I’d like. The Sonys… technically useful… and there we have it. Catch up soon I hope, let me know if you’re around for a coffee in town.
Will let you know when I’m around, would be great to catch up! Sounds to me like you need to get back out into the forest for some more abstract images my friend :)
I was ready to make the jump to getting a 240 but has anyone seen that the batteries have been discontinued? How has Leica allowed something to happen for a product still going strong 12 years later.
I got myself a black M240 after almost landed on an M10. There's something about the M240 images that are more pleasing to me. The gripe that I have with this camera is mostly the buffer as it can make the camera freezes when doing burst shooting. Other than that, love the M240 very much!
Yeah I think there feels like there’s something special about the sensor. To be fair, the M10 looks fantastic too, and I wouldn’t complain about the slightly smaller size, but the price was just that little bit too much apart for me - would much rather have a camera and be shooting than saving for another year or 2! I’ve not done a lot of burst shooting, but that doesn’t surprise me - there are definitely places like that where you can feel its age!
Thanks! There’s 3 I use - a voigtlander nokton 35mm, a voigtlander nokton 28mm, and a TT Artisans 50mm f1.4. I would say about 60% of these are on the 35mm, but I’ve only just got the 28mm! The 50 is nice too - it punches well well above its price point!
Great video thank you for sharing !! Love having this kind of chill user experience feedback with a lot of REAL photographs, not just pictures you took in one week to review the camera 🙂By the way, what do you think about the 28 Nokton ? I'd love having you thoughts on it. I am use to the 28 Ultron II, which is already an amazing little gem !
Thanks so much! I’ve not had the Nokton for long, but I’m liking it so far. I have to say there’s been times where I wish I went for the ultron for the smaller size, but the larger aperture has been handy too - different use cases I guess! But image wise and handling I’m a fan. I tried a thypoch 28mm first, but I couldn’t get on with the infinity lock - even if I do think the image was maybe a hair nicer. But the nokton handles exactly like my 35mm which I love!
@@willhdolan Thanks for your feedback ! Same for the Thypoch, I quite liked the rendering, but hated the handling.. I guess it really depends on everyone preference because a lot of youtubers enjoy the Thypoch. For me, it had the feeling I was blocked on each side of the focus ring : one because of the infinity lock, and the other one because of the 0.7m stop point to go up to 0.4 or something. I found it too "strong" for my taste, and also because I don't always use my lenses with rangefinder but also live view and evf. Anyway, thanks again 🙂
Very much agree! Now I grant you that my main photography camera for work is an a7rV which is comically high resolution, but almost all of my work is released at much much lower resolution that that! The high res is handy to crop into an aps-c mode - especially when doing unit stills and bts on a film - but I’ve not felt any big benefits other than that for my work! 24mp is still absolutely more than enough!
