Hey guys, Ari, can you guys make a video on valve adjustment with shims and also break down the math to it plus going over long term affects of running either tight or loose over time. Great videos, really enjoy them.
If you guys dont mind, I completed the survey even though I don't live anywhere near the land of the free. Dont really mind that I wont be able to win that gopro, but I'd be more than happy to contribute to the riding community all around the globe. Cheers, Aj, Philippines
I'm rockin' a 2008 Buell 1125R with around 55,000 miles and the belt still looks like it did the day I rode it home. It is even nicer because of the belt tension pulley do you don't have to deal with axle adjustment.
Guys. Whenever you do a survey please let us know that it's for people from particular places. I'm a fan of you and I'm from India. Not only me there are many audience outside US . We are also your fans and we too get excited about your surveys and giveaways. We also wanna be a part of your channel. Anyway you guys are amazing and this is a great video. You are helping us grow in motorcycling. Love you guys ... Love from India...😊❤️
It might be worth mentioning those would regularly ride on gravel roads to check the sprockets for small pebbles lodged in the sprockets, they can wreck a belt pretty quickly.
thanks for producing this video, good job ! i would like to add one point. for Indian bikes it is important that before you adjust the belt, the bike must be fully rested. do not adjust right after riding, allow it to cool down for a few hours.
Nope, better of adjusting when fully hot. Now your adjusting in real world conditions. Throw out the tool and Use your common sense when setting the tension
Believe u can use shoe/rubber polish to keep ur belt long lasting. Havent tried yet. As it get older it becomes hard, shoe polish will come handy. Should be used only on the outer and side surface.
Wouldn't be that hard or take that long. Did mine a couple of weeks ago at 125,000 miles. I've got an '07 Dyna and the hardest part was pulling the clutch basket and counter balance to get the inner primary and front pulley off (if you're replacing the front pulley). Take the lower bolt holding the shock and pull the rear axle out a little (don't have to pull the muffler). Take one belt off and put the other on. Repeat in reverse and you're done. took me and a friend about 1 1/2 - 2 hours.
I had a 883 and the belt went at 50,000 and the HD dealer did the inspection 2 days before, And when I complained they told me I was lucky some break at 10,000 & 20,000 but when I bought the bike they told me at 100,000 change it and you will have no problems., but still charged me full price for a new one + shop time. I just got a S40 Boulevard How long should the belt last on it. Sorry Harley but once lied to I don't go back.
I just bought a 22 year old bike with 20 miles on it. Yes 20 original miles. not 20k. The belt and bike look brand new. Minus the chrome pitting from age.. debating if I should replace the belt just because of age. after I take care of some necessary maintenance like changing out the 22 year old fluids
Reason belts aren't used on sportbikes? Limited rear wheel travel to maintain proper tension, or else required to run belt tension idler (such as a Buell). Also, massive horsepower nees more belt width, requiring heavy pulleys. Chains just don't have these shortcomings.
I have a topic suggestion for the MC garage: Suspension: how does it work? OK, more specifically, many bikes these days offer a lot of options to play with - compression damping, rebound damping, and preload. Are there situations where you might want more compression than rebound daming? Or heavy damping with low preload? How does the surface play into this - like bumpy city streets vs a well maintained track? We're diving (hehe, pun, see?) into these questions in this video from the MC Garage!
On mine I have to use an app on the phone to gauge tension by the harmonic frequency of the belt being thrummed. Requires 25 kg of tension and those Harley gauges don’t go that high. Tried a krickett but heck if I can figure out to get a reliable reading with it.
Hi Ari, hope you made a MC Garage video about the advantage and disadvantage about drum and disc type brakes, because my friend tell me that the drum type brake easy to maintain than the disc type, is that true? i wonder about the type of the motorcycle brake and their advantage or disadantage. Thank You.
I dont remember why I posted that, but there are only two pulleys, the engine or motor and the wheel. If no adjustment is possible at the engine, that leaves wheel alignment. Im able to center my belt on my Zero by using the left/right adjusters on the rear wheel.
Can you guys do an episode on loading bikes safely into trucks and trailers? Also strapping them down, I always mess up my grips when I truck my bike somewhere.
Gonna go out on a major limb here considering how long this video has been up, but I have to ask, do you recall the size of wrench for the axle nut? I’ve got the same bike.
Its a bit of a weird questionaire if you ask me. Do i think Suzuki is a poor brand because my bike from the 70's doesnt have ABS? How many miles did i ride, with the max being 300?
It means your engine is running rich (too much fuel, not enough air) and the only reason it's bad for the bike is because it will foul up your spark plugs, so you will have to change them more often. That's it. A minor side effect is increased fuel consumption. This usually happens when a full aftermarket exhaust is fitted, which doesn't have oxygen sensor (O2 probe, lambda probe) so it's not a closed fueling loop anymore. Therefore ECU has no information about the combustion process and can't adjust fueling on-the-fly. Fueling in that case is fixed by either fitting a Power Commander, or by getting your bike's ECU flashed in a reputable tuning shop to adjust fueling. That being said, it's better to run rich than lean, because running lean can actually damage your engine.
can you tell about my motorcycle 2008 honda cbr 600rr that have problem when the engine cold it ok to start but when temperature up to 217 F suddenly the engine has stop. when i start the engine is not work .
Heyy I had a question for you Why does a twin cylinder of the same capacity of a triple or a four cylinder, make more torque than the triple or four cylinder engine ?
Distilled to the simplest explanation, the fewer the cylinders (for a given displacement), the longer the stroke must be, and that equates to more torque.
My bike has 30,000 miles on it and the rear sprocket doesn't look worn but it has a lot of scratches in it it's aluminum is that normal no gouges no Knicks just thousands of little scratches please respond so I don't have to buy a new one thank you
Fractions are not hard. Every human can reasonably split something by eye in 1/2. 1/2 of a thing is .5 1/2 of that is 1/4 (.25) 1/2 of that is 1/8 (.125) 1/2 of that is 1/16 (.0625) Ect... Fractions are just ratios, they are what the natural world is built upon.
Indian says to adjust tension and alignment at 60F ambient temperature. That makes it easy (Not). Seriously, in the real world a temp range would be more realistic if not perfect. Kevlar has a negative coefficient of expansion. Meaning that as the belt gets hotter it contracts rather than expands as most materials do. So it is logical to do the adjustment at a "mid range" temperature rather than further out in either direction. Set tension when the temps are too low and when it is warmer and the belt is hot from riding you could have an overly tight belt and damage bearings.
All other things being equal a rubber band does not transfer power as efficiently as a metal chain. However, all other things are never equal (especially driver skill) so it isn't consequential in real world use. My 1125r has a belt and it can hang with any chain driven liter bike.

real quack.
It might be worth mentioning those would regularly ride on gravel roads to check the sprockets for small pebbles lodged in the sprockets, they can wreck a belt pretty quickly.
like with a chain, the most interesting part is at the end, when you torque the rear axle bolt and then check alignment and tension 'one last time'!

What about alignment of the rear wheel to make the belt track straight?
Did you ever find an answer? My belt is a bit to one side and not centered.....

A video about spark plugs Please!!!...thanks bud!
So you mention looking for nicks and tears etc; if you find damage is there anything you can do or do you just have to buy a new belt?
Some wear, fraying, and nicks/chipping is fine, but anything major warrants replacement.
Is it posible to change into chain type a fatbob?
100,000 miles. Tell Erik Buell that.
1990 A Buell is a different beast than a stock Harley therefore the tolerances are not the same.
And nor are the belts. LOL
So follow up with how to change a belt perhaps?
I remember doing a survey for y'all awhile back. Weren't you doing a give away as well? Never heard an announcement.
Yup! We didn't make an announcement for the winners but we contacted them and sent 'em their swag.

Is it bad to not use Neutral Gear while Starting(with clutch pressed), after stopping? I leave the gear in first. Thank you.
I always leave it in gear so that I'm ready to roll. It's safer for you that way and doesn't do any damage to your engine.
Dont forget to check the torque on the pulley bolts. Mine rattled loose and snapped and that's why I'm here
Use loctite also
