The Aftermath of the Helene flooding of Erwin Day 1

- It's been a solemn morning as my friend Michael Baker and our group joined first responders early at dawn in Erwin to start the long process of surveying damage so plans of action can be implemented. We've pledged our full support over the next few weeks documenting with photos and video for the town of Erwin and an other municipality (Elizabethton, Hampton, Greene County) that we can be of help to. Please pray as we met several families today that had suffered total losses. Now is the time to donate anything that can be of help. #erwin #elizabethtontn #rebuild #ErwinStrong #Standwithcommunity
I’m thinking about all of the jobs and the livelihoods of the people that is now gone. Wishing them all of the best in these tough times
I was thinking the same thing. Small city, lots of industries are going to be out of commission for weeks, some may not reopen at all. Going to be a hard hit to the local population. Hope they pull through.
@@sharkheadismPeople will rebuild and thrive. And do their best not to ignore CC.

Terrible to see, but I also want to say that I appreciate how drone- based video has given us an awesome way to view the planet we live on.
All the better to see how we are destroying our planet.

Thank you for doing what the news is not doing. Thank you.
It’s hard to get footage currently because there’s so little coverage and so many roads and bridges are destroyed. There’s cities where all roads in/out are gone.
The news sadly reports these events and devastation as a form of entertainment with no remorse nowadays. I believe we are each other's keeper to help in times like these. My prayers to all of you that were affected by these unfortunate events.
Idk what news you're watching but Im in another country and been watching US news and have seen all the destruction

@@AceRasputin Really........what happened to their helicopters?? Here is the Carolinas, they used to fly down the street to show you a mud puddle after a rain storm.
I live literally a couple hundred yards from all of this. It was crazy to watch it all happen
I'm here in Jonesborough and had NO idea this was happening until I got a bit of cell service for like a 25min and saw the news.
🙏💗🙏
6 or 7 years ago, I broke down in Erwin and had to spend two days waiting on repairs. It was the most unlikely place to become my favorite southern town because frankly, I'd never even heard of it until then. It did though., it became a destination for me.
Those two days are some of the fondest travel memories that I'll ever have. The people of that town are top notch. Everyone from the cashiers at restaurants and stores to city officials treated this weary traveller better than I have ever been treated in my life.
They welcomed me in with open arms and included me as one of their own. It truly showed me the value and make up of the great people of that little city. My prayers and my love are with the people of Erwin.
❤
My town devastated right now but us southerners find away to smile and laugh during situations like this it’s bad worse than I’ve ever seen here I’m 53 years old here every one comes together and do whatever we have to do to help our neighbors and our community 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Yeah that's so weird. I had the opposite experience there. (TW for SA n Violence)
I was 17 about 25y ago, and it was a sundown town. I was SAd by a city official who picked me up for "curfew violation" for walking at night under 18. He tried to get me drunk (I pretended to but dumped it when he wasn't looking) and told that if I told anyone I would get chopped up and thrown in the woods because I don't know the mountains being a tourist and all. I'm not going to lie. I had a very different reaction when I saw this headline. Obviously I feel for any good people in the town, with a place that has a gift shop called The hanging elephant (bc they actually hung an elephant there, seeing as Johnson City wanted to but didn't have a big enough crane according to the local lore), whose neighbor towns still had sundown signs, whose residents constantly asked if our family member who was moving there from DC we were helping if we were "leaving bc of all the N******s"..... Well I just hope it's a very different place now so that I can actually feel appropriately bad. Bc anyone voluntarily living in a sundown town in 2024 might just be seeing karma.
Thanks brother ❤🇺🇸
@jerryroof9152 Just moved to South Carolina from Greeneville. Wow, I am so sorry about the flooding and pray everyone is ok. You're right, we southerners always find a way to make the best out of any situation with a smile. Thinking about everyone there. ❤
Im thinking that structural engineers are in high demand now in several states! WOW and OMG!!!!!
Those are probably the same kind of people who said it was ok to build in a river bottom flood plain.
@@buckydoedowner9040 Indeed, they'll probably say "go ahead and rebuild in the same place. This'll never happen again in 500 years."
This could be one of the most expensive hurricanes ever. Such loss.
NOLICHUCKY RIVER caused all this!! I was at that river Saturday!! unbelievable destruction!!
Ofcourse it will be... Inflation is real.
@richdiana3663. Without a doubt. Over 350 mi. from Helene, getting 60+ gusts in coastal SE. Fl. Unheard of in my 72 years here!!
@buckydoedowner9040 = 🤡
I don't think people realize just how devastating this is for the years to come! Food production and manufacturing took a massive hit with this hurricane and there's another one on the way!
Then, on top of that you have the inflation!
Crazy to see that much damage that far inland from a hurricane.
Hope they recover quickly from this.
I'm thinking the total for all the damage Helene had done is going to be over a zillion dollars. The last death count I saw was 40 but I'm sure that will at least triple. This was a storm of centuries. I've heard that if the Atlantic's water temperature rises a half of a degree more there will be a permanent hurricane 🌀 in it
So devastating. Thank you for sharing the images. It’s hard to imagine the scope of events like this. I’m sorry for all affected by the storm, people, homes, workplaces, livestock, pets, wildlife.
Just think for a minute .
Why is that vally so flat !
Becouse its built by floods .
Partly by floods, but few were caused by people unlocking billions of years of stored carbon into the atmosphere.
Imagine what a world flood could do.
@@IcelanderUSer Nonsense. ANY educated geologist will tell you that this is a river floodplain being used for what nature intended. The floodplain was BUILT by floods of that river for hundreds of thousands of years during innumerable floods when there were no humans. I swear, the common layperson is SO incredibly ignorant of the geological history of our planet. You people should strive to take at least one science class in high school that includes earth science.
You are too Smart for most of RUclipsrs.
I’m just some idiot watching this drone footage on his iPad and even I can see how the river was channeled between the hills at the upper end into the flat plains below. This wasn’t the first time this happened. It may have been over 200 or more year’s ago but the waters going to go where the water can go. You see the results.
Instead of music it would be better if you did a voiceover. said where this, city, state, region, how many miles it covers, what river that is, what highways those are, what cities they connect to, and what those buildings house.
You must understand people are watching from all over the world. Most local news broadcasters aren’t even saying which state they’re covering only the county so you’re not the only one.
I’m in Alabama and I’d like to share this but I need more information. This is devastation on levels never seen in my lifetime. I’m so sorry for everyone’s losses. The video is good I just wish I knew more. I’m so sorry and God bless.
This is eastern Tennessee. Interstate 26 near Interstate 81.
I agree. Would be nice to know what we are looking at besides total devastation. Appears to be an industrial area with several large buildings, but what? Not much info in the description either.
It’s the Unicoi Hospital at Exit 40 on I-26 in TN and the interstate bridges are just north of that hospital that was on news for needing 50+ people rescued from roof.
The interstate connects to I-81 north of this and goes south through Asheville.
I was thinking the same thing. You took my words wright out of my mouth. I would love to know what highway that was and what was those buildings that were destroyed and what area was this?

Hopefully one day the national media notice something happened up here too when they’re done focusing on some boats washing up in FL. Think there’s only 2 routes between NC and TN now - tail ‘o the dragon and 74 near the GA border. This will take some time.
Praying that can get cleaned up soon for all affected. 🙏❤️

Thank you for doing this.
Are you going to do one of the nolichuckey towards Greeneville and maybe asheville also? Or elizabethton/Hampton? Would be good to have for historical purposes. In my 43 years in the tricities I have never see anything like this. 33 people still missing in Unicoi.
Im in JC, I said the same. Never this bad

Did the Nolichuckey break ?
@@barbaradw9969 The last I saw about it the dam hadn't broken but was at high risk of it. Supposedly fingers cross the water height is dropping fairly quickly and that should reduce stress on the dam.
@@barbaradw9969 in the middle of the night TVA stated a dam failure was imminent & emergency evacuations were ordered. upbeat music for a tragedy is ridiculous. Who chose this song? Very poor taste
The storm, the flooding aftermath with dams threatened, roads and buildings destroyed, this is one, unfortunately that will go down in history. A disaster worse than the Johnsonville flood in terms of damage. My heart aches for all those affected.

People don't have a clue how bad things are about to get in this country!
GA reported what was done to their agricultural sector. Fruit trees, nut trees, row crops.
We've got dam failures. Manufacturing and food just took a hit. So did the lumber industry.
Hospitals destroyed. Post offices destroyed.
All of those vehicles destroyed.
Huge propane tanks floated away from convenience stores. The stores and gas stations are gone.
I'm pretty sure warehouse distribution centers are destroyed. Just in time delivery doesn't work during disasters.
People don't have a clue! 😮
Complete devastation..I hope folks impacted by this finds the strength and means to push on and rebuild. Life can turn upside down in a blink. Appreciate the sun on your face and the innocent laughter of a child..nobody knows when life will deal you this type of blow. 💪 🙏
I honestly don’t know that I would suggest rebuilding at least not in the same place since this type of storm may just become more common. This is the reason rule America is becoming a place people move away from because natural disasters and man-made, disasters, and businesses being destroyed will kill these small towns.

Wow!! 😨
Looks like that stretch of I-26 is going to be out of commission for awhile. It's just unbelievable how fast this all happened.
My heart is breaking as I watch this and the tears just flow. I am in middle Ga and what we have all just experienced is devastating. It's not about the things, houses , jobs but this and the time we live in is about God Almighty !!!! Get to Him quickly, run while there is still time. He loves us so much He sent His only son . Give it all to Him He will see you through. As this is happening to us here please know the middle east is jumping right out of the pages of the Bible speaking very loudly And prophetically. Pay attention. Time is short. Very short. Much much love
What entity allowed those warehouses and hospitals to be built on a 100-year flood plain. Shame on the medical system management for wasting millions of dollars building in such an obviously low-lying dangerous place. Those responsible should be held accountable. Even a 10-year-old child sees this location as a vulnerable to flood
It’s more like a 1000 year flood plain. But given the intensity of rainfall, the 1000 is now the normal rate. It’s just going to get worse.
All those jobs right by the river just got washed away, many of the probably forever. I wonder if they'll be rethinking the location of that industrial area now.
I have no idea what industry that is (was) and whether or not it is tied to local resources.
That’s terrible. God bless all the people of Erwin and everywhere that were affected in anyway by this devastating storm.
Lots of folks going to realize they don't have a job to go to Monday morning. And for a lot of these businesses, building back may not be an option...

What, do you think all the insurance companies are pulling out of Florida in recent years for the fun of it because they do not want to make money????? No of course not, they are pulling out because the flood and wind damage caused by hurricanes due directly to climate change is steadily getting worse with each passing year and they can no longer make a profit due to the natural disaster losses they are having to cover regularly now.
