I have a HP 14-df0023cl bought for $229, it has a i3-8130U, backlit keyboard and Full HD IPS display. RAM was originally 4GB but I upgraded it to 8GB dual channel.
These model laptops are definitely worth recommending. I got the dk0017na model, with 1080p matte screen, Athlon 300u, 4gb ram, 128 SSD. All for around £270
I just got this laptop because I need something on budget to do social media, video streaming and do streaming of Animal Crossing adventures in Facebook and my friend, for what it is and what I pay for it I’m happy, it gets the job done.
The best part about this exact model is the upgrade ability. I got the model with the 128 gb SSD (1022) but I wish I got this one instead. Why? They use the exact same motherboard, the only difference is the 1025 uses the R3 3250U. Same speed, slightly better thermals. No noticeable difference. Why is that important? By having the HDD, this model already has all the parts needed for a two drive system. You can easily drop an NVMe drive into the unpopulated M.2 slot, migrate your OS to that, then replace the HDD with a SSD. Throw in another 4+ gb stick of ram and you've got a solid little daily driver that can handle a bit of light gaming. At this point, mine is sitting at 32gb of RAM, a 500gb NVMe and I've got the cable and caddy coming to install a 1tb SSD
Good review. I agree with everything you said. Had to take a webcam proctored test so I went to Walmart in search of a webcam for my desktop--ended up buying this laptop since they were out of webcams. For the money (I got the version with the 128 GB SSD) this is a solid little laptop. It's not amazing, but it can handle basic every day tasks. The screen quality is the biggest turn off for me, but it's $300, has an SSD, a good processor, USB-C, solid battery life, a good keyboard (even Apple can't always accomplish that) and a pleasing design. You could do worse for the money.
I just returned the 15" version with the lower-spec non-IPS screen and had to return it because the horrible screen was hurting my eyes! I ended up getting a 14-dk1032wm from WalMart with a better IPS screen, so I am hoping it will work out!
I purchased the HP dk1035wm version on Ebay for $280 brand new and upgraded the RAM to 8GB, so about $295. This video is spot on cause this laptop has not disappointed me for the price point, except on the keyboard issue. Typing is good but the letters and numbers are not visible when it's not under direct lighting. I had to get a laptop lamp which worked out well. The graphics is integrated but I was able to play my older games like Skyrim, Medieval II: Total War, Supreme Commander, SimCity 4, American Truck Simulator, but all at low specs (no Bloom, Antialias, etc) and at 720p. Fallout 4 was the only one that is not playable, but that's not a biggie for me and for the price I paid. I also put a small fan next to the heating vent and the laptop stays very cool. Oh, and yes, I even play Guild Wars 2 and it runs beautiful at the lowest specs too. The screen is glossy but sharp and crisp. I just had to go to the BIOS and change the setting to disable the FN key from working with the F keys. The 1TB HDD is good for me as it gives plenty room for my video downloads, and it keeps the laptop cool. Many people don't realize it until it's too late that putting in an M.2 card causes super high temperatures because of its high-speed capacity. A few seconds more with an HDD drive won't kill my personal time. I chose the HP dk1035wm with the 1TB HDD because not only can I upgrade the RAM up to 32GB, but I can swap an SSD if I would like, besides adding an M.2 card. Other models that have 128GB are with the M.2 cards and does not have the connector to add an SSD drive. 10 months with this and so far, so good. ====== Update======= I've upgraded this laptop with a 2TB SSD drive and 32GB of memory and now I am able to play Fallout 4 at 720p. Because of the SATA III SSD the temps stays low yet I still place a small fan near the air vent to help even more. This laptop is still the best I've had for the price I paid.
The super slight increase in temperate isn’t worth missing out on how fast they are lol. I’ve never noticed a difference in temps of any of my laptops after an m2 install
@daBoi223 An m.2 hard drive will run hot when playing games in a laptop due to minimum airflow. The speed of huge data transfer will cause the drive to get hot and it would be the same when editing videos. Of course, other less productive use would keep the temps low. I've just upgraded to an SSD drive and when I play games it just gets warm because the speed of an ssd is only one third of that of an M.2 drive. You should read or google about the heat issues with m.2 as its all over the internet. In fact, it is always recommended to have a heatsink with an m.2 but I guess in your case the laws of physics doesn't apply.

I just purchased (but I haven't opened the box yet) a HP Laptop 14-dk1035wm (for $369.00) from my local Walmart. I think I'll take it back and put that money toward getting a more powerful laptop at some point in the future. I can only assume that you'd necessarily conclude that the 14-dk1025wm and the 14-dk1035wm would be close to identical in terms of performance. Anyway, thanks for your review of the one. It gave me something to go on for the other. Surprisingly, I haven't been able to find any reviews at all for the 14-dk1035wm.
I just got one of these in what appears to be perfect condition for 80 bucks today, I haven’t used windows since 7 so I’m getting used to it but really like it so far. I’m hoping I can upgrade the ram since that’s the same amount I was using in 2009

Beautifully done! Even though I've pretty much just found your channel because of my interest on this laptop, your review videos are definitely put together very well. Thank you for showing some of the games that it can run. I was shocked to see just how 60FPS is possible on many games, even in 720p. I will be upgrading this laptop with even more RAM and see if I can get an SSD installing into it. Thats all its lacking is more memory. I love this laptop!
I just got the 128gb solid state drive version for $300 bucks, it’s a great laptop for the money, not planning on doing much gaming with it but it’s nice to see it can handle a few oldies I throw at it rather well. And just how do you upgrade the ram?
Just bought the HP dk1035wm with a Ryzen 3 and 250gb ssd today (11/19/21). It's still at the "Just a moment..." screen, has been for over an hour. Any ideas if that's just because it's the initial boot up, or can it be something else?

Spring for the 128gb SSD model if at all possible. It'll be more worth your money than the one I got, at least for daily use. But if not, this will serve just fine, just make sure you upgrade the RAM either way.

ive bought this laptop about a week and ive came out of the s mode and the laptop only freezes while watching videos online and requires a hard restart to come out of the freeze is it coming out of s mode the cause or ist it the ram casuing the laptop to freeze

As far as the criteria you mentioned, I think it should do just fine. As long as you have at least 8gb memory (which would require an upgrade in this model's case), I see no reason why it can't do any of what you need to do.
Im a college student and do all of that as well. I went for wallmart's lenovo ideapad 3 (ryzen 5) 15.6 inch screen. Pretty fast and nice for what I require. Also, it costs $399 (plus taxes) rn on wallmart

So I saw the 128GB SSD version of this at Walmart. I've been looking a for a cheaper laptop for general use, but also wanted to re-teach myself some coding. I also just want something I can play Morrowind on with some mods. Do you think this would handle all that well enough? Or would I have to add another channel of RAM?
I'd probably get a used ProBook at this price range tbh also. However, being honest, this was honestly almost worth keeping just for the sake of the input devices being decent, as well as good battery life for what it was.

The Asus f412DA-WS33 is $380 at Walmart, for that you get 8gb of ram a 256GB SSD and 1080p display. You lose the Ethernet, one use type a is 2.0 and the sdcard reader is micro instead of full size. Ether way 8GB should be a minimum as the 3250u takes a good chunk of system memory for the iGPU, 12GB or more is ideal.
@@jwoolery99 Agree, as soon as Windows starts paging to the disk the system will be come unusable. $300-$400 is a lot of money for many people. The laptop to need to be upgraded right out of the box feels like it is just taking advantage of non tech savvy buyers.
@@unicaller1 Oh yeah I have this laptop and when Windows starts paging you can forget about using the computer for anything productive. The computer was so terribly slow because of the ram problem I literally only had 1GB usable after just installing a few apps. I said screw it and I got 32GB of ram 2x 16gb sticks and it’s amazing now i can actually use the damn laptop now. I’m probably going to get a ssd soon too

Excluding te gaming aspect of this laptop because personally, I don't care about that, and also excluding things like using RUclips because I don't need this laptop for that either, would you recommend this to be a decent and lightweight laptop for someone wanting to use word processor/scrivener (which is a writer's program)? I don't want a laptop that will burn out and be unusable after having it a year or so. I would like for it to last as long as possible for what I would like to use it for which is writing.
I only owned this laptop for the review period and didn't perform any upgrades as I returned it shortly afterward. However, yes you can do both RAM upgrades and add an SSD.
For the price its worth it, due it's Radeon Vega igpu does good In video editing but get 8gigs of ram (dual channel,on the other slot) increase shared vram to 2gigs and use filmora or there are light weight but feature packed video editors adobe premier pro will struggle
Are you real sure you even used one. I just set up one and it is the worse computer I have used in my 40 years of working on computers. I have a second one that is only slightly better. Either you got the best one or I have the worse one. 0 stars
Only if you plan to use more storage locally than the 128gb SSD would have, as there are a few drawbacks to the 1TB model, not the least of which would be disk performance.

Why not crack it open see if it has a m.2 and upgraded ram allot of these laptops have 4gb DDR 4 soldiered to it and one empty dimm slot put another 2400 4gb in it it may run as dual channel
I only purchased this for review. If I intended on keeping it as an upgrade over my Acer Aspire E 15 (which I almost did), then I would've immediately done something like that to observe the motherboard and upgrade paths.
@@jwoolery99 but i would be nice to see how i would be like before and after. These are the cheapest laptops out there with some upgrade path. If you can get ssd and a stick of ram is cheap to review. A product need more then out of the box . yes show out of the box performance but also best case scenario. They say on ryzen dual channel will almost double performance.
I only had this laptop for the review period, but I would assume this would make for a starter machine if you just need something for simpler projects.
Actually looking into the requirements for the software directly from AVID, I actually take back what I was originally saying. It looks like the program requires that you have 16gb RAM, for which that laptop can use 16gb but I don’t think it’s worth making that kind of investment into. You will have to look towards a more powerful machine with a better processor, something with a 4 core Intel Core i5 or a 4 core Ryzen 5 at a minimum.

I got this for a birthday present, opened it up got it started up, it was slow an froze up, brand new out of the box, still not working well

Yes, ram and hard drive are both upgradable. A good source of ram comes from crucial.com, and any standard 2.5” SATA SSD should work fine.

Open up and slide in a RAM module. 1 empty slot there. OR swap out the old 4GB module

No minecraft would run pretty bad, I play Roblox on this exact one and it runs on max graphics at a stable fps, On really demanding Roblox games

During my time with it, not really. It can run warm under load but that's to be expected with a physically small chassis and single fan cooling.
Looks like a modified watered-down ProBook to me. I prefer a ProBook over this.
I'd probably get a used ProBook at this price range tbh also. However, being honest, this was honestly almost worth keeping just for the sake of the input devices being decent, as well as good battery life for what it was.

I believe there are two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots inside and an m.2 slot, yes. That would be for the model with the 128gb SSD.

The Asus f412DA-WS33 is $380 at Walmart, for that you get 8gb of ram a 256GB SSD and 1080p display. You lose the Ethernet, one use type a is 2.0 and the sdcard reader is micro instead of full size.
Ether way 8GB should be a minimum as the 3250u takes a good chunk of system memory for the iGPU, 12GB or more is ideal.

@@jwoolery99 Agree, as soon as Windows starts paging to the disk the system will be come unusable. $300-$400 is a lot of money for many people. The laptop to need to be upgraded right out of the box feels like it is just taking advantage of non tech savvy buyers.
@@unicaller1 Oh yeah I have this laptop and when Windows starts paging you can forget about using the computer for anything productive. The computer was so terribly slow because of the ram problem I literally only had 1GB usable after just installing a few apps. I said screw it and I got 32GB of ram 2x 16gb sticks and it’s amazing now i can actually use the damn laptop now. I’m probably going to get a ssd soon too

Excluding te gaming aspect of this laptop because personally, I don't care about that, and also excluding things like using RUclips because I don't need this laptop for that either, would you recommend this to be a decent and lightweight laptop for someone wanting to use word processor/scrivener (which is a writer's program)? I don't want a laptop that will burn out and be unusable after having it a year or so. I would like for it to last as long as possible for what I would like to use it for which is writing.
I found the keyboard rather decent for typing, especially for long sessions, so I would say yes.

For the price its worth it, due it's Radeon Vega igpu does good In video editing but get 8gigs of ram (dual channel,on the other slot) increase shared vram to 2gigs and use filmora or there are light weight but feature packed video editors adobe premier pro will struggle

Why not crack it open see if it has a m.2 and upgraded ram allot of these laptops have 4gb DDR 4 soldiered to it and one empty dimm slot put another 2400 4gb in it it may run as dual channel
I only purchased this for review. If I intended on keeping it as an upgrade over my Acer Aspire E 15 (which I almost did), then I would've immediately done something like that to observe the motherboard and upgrade paths.

If you can get ssd and a stick of ram is cheap to review. A product need more then out of the box . yes show out of the box performance but also best case scenario. They say on ryzen dual channel will almost double performance.

Actually looking into the requirements for the software directly from AVID, I actually take back what I was originally saying. It looks like the program requires that you have 16gb RAM, for which that laptop can use 16gb but I don’t think it’s worth making that kind of investment into. You will have to look towards a more powerful machine with a better processor, something with a 4 core Intel Core i5 or a 4 core Ryzen 5 at a minimum.
