Considering that 99% of home studio tours are essentially about showing off accumulated gear, it was incredibly refreshing and inspiring to see someone actually embody the principle of using what is necessary and effective for achieving results, no less, no more. Thank you for your insight, all the best.
Pro tools has nothing to do with it. By the way...pro tools is the industry standard and if your mixing for record labels, you better be running pro tools! But yes, studio one is excellent software.
sounds like a typical fan boy response, yeah it might be good to learn PT but it is not necessary! I use Presonus Studio One and I am glad I made the switch from my previous daw. Worse case scenario a person can use whatever daw they want and if they want said song mixed, bounce to AIFF or Wav, done deal @@faderismyname644
@@faderismyname644 lol I mixed for Metal Blade on a prehistoric version of Cubase. There are pro records made with Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic, Studio One and even Reaper.
Good advice on the sub frequencies. I’m use the Yamaha HS8’s with the sub and I’ve run into the surprise when my mix doesn’t sound as huge on headphones or in a car because I’m used to the sound of the mix on my setup. Mixing quieter and checking multiple sources has improved this for me.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought about downsizing my interface for mixing. I heard Apogee has some of the cleanest D/A conversion out there, but the Duet is the only one currently in my price range.
You can actually update the operating system on that old 2011 Mac to the latest system. There is a trick to bypass the date system on the motherboard. I did it with a couple of my computers.
Greetings, amazing video. I am new to your channel and must say I was shocked to see that you condensed your studio in the box without UAD platform. I'm impressed!!! Hoping to watch more of your videos.
Very same headphones I use Jordan. I use them mostly live but have been using them in the studio as well lately. I don't mix through them though. Like you, I just use them to check my mixes. They have a nice flat response.
If you want headphones that will give you good low end reference, I recommend semi-open back cans, as opposed to closed-back ones. I have those AT's and while they're good for tracking, my Beyerdynamic semi-open cans have much better low-end response and they are not hyped in the meds like the MTH50's.
I've seen a few of your vids here and there during some casual YouTubing, always been good stuff. But I just realized that you mixed Intervals' "A Voice Within", thanks to that handy little use of "Ephemeral" at 9:08. Subbed. :D
Great simple setup, similar to mine, i have an interface, adc, a distressor and an mp2nv and 4 mics. You dont need a ton of gear and even if you do it dosent have to be crazy expensive. If i was a mixer only all i would need is good monitors, treatment and a apollo twin.

Hey Jordan, Nice, simple set-up you have there. I have a similar set-up, but I am concidering a computer upgrade. I currently have a mid 2010 iMac 2.93Ghz i7 that I would like to upgrade. I use, like you, Protools 12 native. As I understand it, Protools 12 requires OS-X 10.10.6 as the latest OS it will run reliably on. If I want to meet that spec, I'm limited to a 2014 iMac. However, you say you're running PT 12 on a 2017 iMac. What OS are you using with it? What problems do you run into, if any, with regards to Protools and stability issues? It can be quite fussy... Thanks for any insights! Take care! E.
@@hardcoremusicstudio Awesome, thanks! I guess I'm going to configure an external harddrive with the most recent OS my current Mac wil support and see if I can get PT12.2 to run properly from it. If that works reliably, I can make the jump to a newer mac that will still support that same OS (: Thanks a million and rock on!!
Haha!! I just bought the same pair of headphones, 1 step down... the ATH M40s, and for just playing guitar, plugging into my amp, sounds pretty awesome! Really liking them, and they are mu first pair!
I 100% disagree on the NS10's. I mixed on NS 10's from the late 80's through 90's. You have to learn how to compensate for the low end. I remember burning CD after CD abd listening in the car, on a stereo, on a boom box (yes boombox lol). But the bottom line is, we have speakers that are very accurate now. I use Focals and Genelec. The Genelec's give me a real representation of the audio. The low end is real! The key to a good mix (if you ask me) is to mix at low volume. Do not fatigue your ear! Another problem with NS10's (which you forgot to mention) is the fact that they use a separate amplifier. Depending on which amp you use, that colors the sound as well. Where as todays speakers, most have built in amps and are matched.
You've gotta use what works for you. Ultimately for me, this sounds like being too much in your head about the gear and the speakers. I stuck with NS10s for one simple reason: my mixes sounded better when I used them. Unless my mixes stop translating and start sucking, I'm happy to ignore all other options.
Jordan you can run High Sierra on your 2010 in the closet. I did the upgrade on mine. The Bios flash is free. I was also able to upgrade it to a 12 core with SSD drives. I did everything myself and super simple. If you want the link to the tutorial video that shows how to do everything msg me.
hey man, unfortunately the issue isn't with running the OS alone, it's that I can't run that OS with the old version of Pro Tools that i need for certain plugins.
OK I see and knowing Avid to update to 12 with your hardware probably to expensive. I went to Cubase. I have my Protools 11 key sitting on the desk collecting dust. If you know anyone that wants to get Protools 11 pretty cheap with some good plugins that will come with it on the Ilok let me know please.
Hi Jordan, I really like the choice that you took on your small studio setup BUT you can take a small SSD (500Go or 1To) from 60$ to 100$ , buy the High Sierra and installed it! (maybe upgrade RAM in the Xeon it can goes to aprox. 64Go of DDR3 It's very simple and you make a double system (on 2 different disk) on your Xeon which is better or equal than my Macbook Pro touch bar 2017 i7 quad core 16 Gb ram. Isn't worthy or too expensive in your case?
Yamaha NS-10 monitors were discontinued a long time ago and it's basically impossible to buy a new pair nowadays; that said, what do you recommend as a good replacement for those? I'm thinking about Neumann KH 120 A as my main monitors and then Avantone MixCubes Active to have a more "real world" overview of the sound, what do you think of my picks? Also I wonder if I really need to buy a subwoofer in the future, since I'm probably not going to be mixing any songs to be played in the club in the next few years... I mainly mix pop, rock and metal.
i wouldn't use the audio technica for mixing anyway. they're too lovely especially in the midrange it's too balanced sounding and it has a lot of boom and fizz which is really nice to listen to music but not ideal when you wanna mix
Very cool, as always! One question related to recording videos for YT: How do you do to record your voice with your SM7b and the sound of Protools simultaneously without leaking from your monitors? Do you turn the gain of your mic off every time you hit play? Do you have the monitors at a very low volume? Cause I don't see you using headphones. Thanks!
Hiya. You have the NS10s with the none rotated drive unit. Have you tried placing them in the vertical position? I have the same NS10M uprights and it made an audible difference pertaining to stereo imaging and increased the listening sweet spot in size etc. Cool video man :) best regards
Hey Jordan, great vid. What specific pair of NS-10s do you have? Drowning in NS-10 model “advice”. Basically reading that the more rare/expensive is better. It looks like yours are the more readily available vertical models and you’ve just turned them horizontal. Thanks for your great content!
i'm not sure man - i just waited for a used pair of NS10's to come up in my area and i bought them. don't waste time in murky details, just move forward!
Great video, makes me feel good about my decision to downgrade from my HD1/96/Mac Pro setup. I’m now on a Focusrite Claret/MacBook/PT12 setup. The only pieces of gear I kept was a distressor and a monitor station. Scary similar! Question regarding your acoustic treatment, what about the ceiling? Do you have something above your mix position?
What amp are you using to drive the NS-10, I use NS-10's, NS-200;s & NS-1000's in my mix room. - I was thinking of trying a Yamaha M-85 power amp. I use an M-85 for my home stereo and love it.
Hi, Jordan. Thank You for the tour. I have a questuins about monitors. Are MAudio AV30 good for mixing? I've heard your comments on low end in the monitors, but some people say that these monitors don't have much of low end. Thank you.
I had just a couple questions please. Are you mixing off of the external drives and if so are they USB3 5400 or 7200 rpm, Also was wondering is the computer a I7 4 core and have you ever tracked to the external USB drives? Thanks Jordan love your video and saving money for your course to bad you couldn't break the videos up in sections like weekly classes to purchase and then have a live stream question at the end of the week. This was something I thought of that I wanted to do but just not that good yet and still learning. I have Nailtomix and bought it right when it came out and was blown away. I was learning so much and then they started to go to the other studios and producer and its nothing but a over view of the mix and not what they started with. I feel completely ripped off. If anyone buys Nailtomix the best knowledge you will get is like the first 6 videos. After that a complete let down. I love your teaching and your honesty. My band is always broke and the members never have any money to pitch in I am sure you know what I mean.
No I don’t! But in the old studio it was a hard floor, so the cloud above helped. Here at home the floor is carpet and I don’t notice any weird reflections.
JV, I just got a set of NS10s for my home setup. I love them. Im used to them from my old job and the studios I work at. What amp do you use, and do you fuse them? Ive heeard so many things, and I trust you and was curious about your setup in that regard. Bryan
Hey Jordan! Thanks again for another quality video. Just had a question about the NS10's. Are you using a special foam or something to reduce vibration transmission through to your desk? If so, what is that?? Are they made by Yamaha or specficially fitted to hold NS10's? Thanks in advance, looking forward to hearing more from you!
Kenny Nguyen Auralex MoPads. However, I would recommend getting sorbothane hemispheres off of Amazon. They provide a tighter bass response than the foam, while providing just as good if not better isolation.
Glad I’m not the only one with a closet full of old gear. Maybe you can help....should I sell my mic’s? I really only mix now , any tracking I do in a studio. But don’t want to sell thousands of dollars worth of mic’s and regret it but I could also put that money to newer stuff that I’d use !? Any advice ?
I totally get it. Here's how to solve this problem. 1. How much could you sell the item for? Let's say it's $500. 2. Ask yourself: "If I had [$500] right now instead of this thing, would I use that money to buy it? If the answer is no, sell it!
I needed more flexibility after getting married and having kids. I also overworked myself and got burnt out. AND I just prefer mixing on my own... and I'm happy to track the odd project when something good comes up, and just rent out another studio to do so.
I've heard that since the speakers are rather tall, the tweeters are aiming over your head and ears. By putting them sideways, the tweeters are more aimed to your ears. Can't remember where I heard that, but it kinda makes sense :P
The high frequencies are more directional than the low ones so if you have the monitors horizontally, you get them more accurately than having them vertically. You can have them vertically if you want, but you have to have your ears at the same high than the middle point between the squaker and the tweeter. I hope it makes sense. Kinda hard to explain since spanish is my mother language but, in the end, it all comes to what Jordan always say. Know your ears, your room and your gear. :)
I'm going to start a Sound Course and the required software is ProTools... now that I've finally mastered Reaper, every single course requires me to buy another extremelly expensive software that I know nothing about and, as far as I'm concerned, does the same as the FREE reaper.
I know theyre in many major studios but aren't they used just to check mixes vs more accurate monitors? they were popular because they weren't that good from what I understand, not trying to be snide I'm juts curious
I don’t rave about one daw being better than another. Its about productivity and what is best for your workflow and what makes you as creative as possible. But I do wonder about why anyone would stay with protools considering the insane cost and not getting anything that anyone has told me, for that extra money. I never used protools. Can you tell me why you use it. I am always open to opinions from knowledgeable people and you seem to be in that category. I like reaper, but if I can get a step ahead with another daw, so be it. I am a very fast learner and adapt easily. I obviously won’t switch for minor things, especially when the investment is daunting. Reaper is almost free and has continuous updates and improvements. Protools scares me considering no one really speaks out about it being great. They only seem to use it because they know it well.i also hear it is unstable. I would like a real opinion from a user like you.
Hey Perry, I know there are many DAWs that can match Pro Tools now. But the reason I won't switch is the pain and lost time it would cause. When I started in the studio, nothing was close to PT. After a couple years it was so second nature for me that any time i touched another DAW I hated it. I want to be able to sit down and do everything without thinking. It would take me months or years to get as fast with another DAW as I am with Pro Tools. I don't care so much about exttra features, I'd be happy to go make a record on Pro Tools 7. I think that whatever you start on is what you should stick with. But I'd still recommend PT to a newbie because most big studios still rely on it. I love the flexibility of knowing I can book almost any great studio in the world and be able to settle right in.
Thanks, that is the sensible answer I get. Of course it makes sense. I wonder how many new studios go with protools. Also the importance of the big studio is becoming less and less. They might only be necessary for the physical space for things like tracking bands, drums and setting up for any daw is so quick and easy as consoles become obsolete. There seems to be no statistics on DAWS. I mean how many users they each have etc. I think avid is sticking to its high price because they know that their client base will stick with it either way for just the reason you mentioned. And that is probably a smart business decision. When eventually protools loses that big studio advantage, they will be in trouble because there will be too many users using other DAWs but that will take a long time. Its an interesting thing. Thanks for enlightening me.its pretty clear. Thanks for the video.
Perry Pelican I use reaper for all kinds of stuff. Midi, vsts, triggering, etc. Etc. But when it comes to mixing, of all the DAWs I've used, I just can't understand why they are the way they are. There's always some weird, obscure limitation that makes no sense and is laborious to work around. Or, there's something that's just easier to do in PT. Or the routing schemes are unnecessarily convoluted. Idk, I sit down in a PT session and everything is just simple and does what it's supposed to. I need a bus, I make one, set the input and I'm done. I need the same setup for another mixing session of the same band? I can import my exact session setup, everything from audio files to plugin settings, with a click of a button. You can include, or exclude, any detail of the session you wish. It's just super streamlined for mixing. There are some things, though, that I wonder about. Why can't I dock my mix window under my edit window, like I can in reaper? Why does a $60 program automatically head and tail fade every single item on the timeline, but the industry standard does not? I can drag, extend or decrease the length of items, adjust the lengths of fades, separate items etc etc etc with a simple mouse interface in reaper. In PT I would have to click the timeline, separate the the item with ctrl+e, highlight the face region and place fades(fades are super easy though in PT), highlight the items, select the grabber tool, move the items then I need to select another tool to adjust the length of the item... Or I could use the multitool, but even then I can't right click and separate, or things like that. I mean, all of that would take like 15 seconds and it's not like it's tedious, but it's just weird that PT doesn't have some pretty obvious workflow options. I still pick PT over reaper, for mixing, for what it's worth.
Well,i dont understand being some adult child and trying to show off gear, since the point is supposed to be recording, not gear.I also dont give a hot damn about 'treating a room' because you can easily use books, records, drapes,or whatever ends up in a room,to get the sound you NEED.I use whatever is here and then i have a Time Delay, which is a way to cut out standing waves, reflections, and other nasties. You NEED clean ,constant power, grounded power, clean cabling, and to KNOW your gear.Squarepusher and his cohorts know their gear, know how to hack their gear, know the math, and use software like REaper,MAX/MSP(Autechre),C Sound, open source programs, like I have. Much of the time,we dont even know what some musicians use, because they are too busy being creative to care.I still have to delve into my Yamaha QY700 sequencer, because i lent it to a friend and he misplaced the power cable.I dont get a lot of outboard or efx because I have hardware samplers with complete sound libraries, plus some have amazing DSP efx.To add to that, you can sample anything, not just recordings, and build your own personal sounds only you have.I liked the setup though, and the Avid control surface is a good idea...

If anyone buys Nailtomix the best knowledge you will get is like the first 6 videos. After that a complete let down. I love your teaching and your honesty. My band is always broke and the members never have any money to pitch in I am sure you know what I mean.
Do you still have the clouds on the ceiling?
No I don’t! But in the old studio it was a hard floor, so the cloud above helped. Here at home the floor is carpet and I don’t notice any weird reflections.
How do you buss the tracked vocal stems thru the distressor with the duet2?
it looks. good. I like that
What about the iMac specs? Did I miss that? Thank you.
How do you like that compressor the distresses
Great video
Many thanks Jordan! Anyway.. something cheaper than the Presonus central station? Thank you!
Mackie big knob has almost identical features. I used it before this
aaa ;) do you know that NS10 has 100% translations for other equipment? I understand that you only use NS10 and ATH50 headphones?
Awsome bro!!!:)I'm similar to you with the closet gear lol.i have a bunch of old equipment also and 2 old interfaces and my old G5 Mac lol.
JV, I just got a set of NS10s for my home setup. I love them. Im used to them from my old job and the studios I work at. What amp do you use, and do you fuse them? Ive heeard so many things, and I trust you and was curious about your setup in that regard. Bryan
Great video!
Hey man! I was wondering, what amplifier do you use to power the NS-10s?
Yamaha P2500s
@@hardcoremusicstudio is that one noisey? I have a QSC Poweramp and the fan is a bit noisey
Nice setup dude! Now from what I’ve read having your monitors on the sides is not the best way to have them...correct me if I’m wrong, just saying.
okay okay what’s that song in the beginning?!
I almost spent a lot more on iso pads/stands... but i'm totally happy with these. No issues mixing here.
Nice video! How do you use your
Distressor with the Apogee Duet?
If u bought say waves Mercury and now pt 12 uses aax will waves give you what u own in new format or do you have to repurchase?
they have the weird Waves Update plan... so beyond a certain point you do have to pay to stay up to date
Why did you stop doing recordings?
I needed more flexibility after getting married and having kids. I also overworked myself and got burnt out. AND I just prefer mixing on my own... and I'm happy to track the odd project when something good comes up, and just rent out another studio to do so.
I'm in the exact same situation (PT HD 8 on a MacPro)
Solid setup. I’d happily use it!
If you used the HS8's and wanted something smaller, why not go for the HS7's instead of the NS-10's?
NS10's have been the choice of top mixers for decades, so I decided to give em a shot. It worked out
Sounds fair. Thanks for the mixing tour!
Lit
This was a great watch as always! What are you using to power the NS10's?
Yamaha P2500
Nice😍😍😍
Why do you tilt your NS10's horizontal? I've heard people talk against it a lot because it widens the stereo image.
Honestly, that's what I've seen in 99% of studios I've worked in and photos of other mixers, so I just went with it. Works for me :)
musicforDRUMIES that was explained very well, thanks for the info!!
makes complete sense. If you're used to it, who cares!
everyone always forgets the most important part of the room.... the chair.
Top 3 books?

Cool thanks! Is there any business or life book you’ve read that are good reads?
great track on 0:38! your job? who is the artist?
sorry, not "job")))) "work" of course
dont really have anything to say about the setup just came to say that you're handsome AF
that is all
10:23 this is why ProTools sucks. Just switch to REAPER and it develops regularly with lot features and compatibility to all kinds of plugins.
readdict88 Eh, I use both for sifferent reasons.
I'm going to start a Sound Course and the required software is ProTools... now that I've finally mastered Reaper, every single course requires me to buy another extremelly expensive software that I know nothing about and, as far as I'm concerned, does the same as the FREE reaper.
Yeah, I switched to Reaper cause that update, licence, pay extra, keep updated, crap. And, keep outboard gear, it's payed, and still works.
my canadian brethren ! we have very similar setups haha
Yaaaaasss Gollum :D
I have the one ring and Bilbo's sword sting on my desk :)
Great video! What do you use if you only get guitar DIs and need to reamp them?
Currently I don't offer that. I make sure they give me guitar tone to mix.
yamaha NS 10 for monitoring? really? wow...
I know, it’s an UNUSUAL choice... 😛
I know theyre in many major studios but aren't they used just to check mixes vs more accurate monitors? they were popular because they weren't that good from what I understand, not trying to be snide I'm juts curious
#careergoals
Hi, why didnt you mix Silversteins newest LP Dead Reflection? I immediately noticed that someone else did the mixing :D you wouldve done it better (;
Was just time to change it up I guess!

Not a musician? What a waste of time.
