    Very informative (and funny) video. Amazing how technology has advanced since the 80s to have a home studio as big as the Soundcraft series, and nowadays you can have an entire studio running in your hard drive. It's mind boggling if you think about it.

      I agree with you. Personally I wouldn't throw anything away that still can be put to good use for ones craft. Me, I never had the pleasure to experience recording/mixing with a physical mixing console. My first experience was on DAWs and it took me a long time to get the hang of it.

    Hey thank you for this amazing video! I have same board. I had been using the Input Channels section of patchbay to go out to my digital recording interfaces (apogee ensembles)...ive been using line in and out there or send/return and everything was working pretty good. Well I finally got some elco snakes made to send signal from the 3 elcos under the board directly to my digital recorders...can I ask you: is this supposed to be automatic? I have the snakes plugged under the board and patched into recorders and I get no signal...is there some other step? Appreciate your thoughts if you have any. Thanks

    • @samuelsimonovic2139

      If the elco pinout is soldered correctly, it should be "automatic". However this is the group/bus out, not channel line out, so you need to push the gorup faders up..

    Having a set of fantastic ears helps a lot. I could probably reveal your secret sauce because I use something very similar in my rack. I'm not going to because that would be mean to an extend I'm not comfortable with. We each have our unique sound right? Groups like Infected Mushroom, Orbital, and JunkieXL are some of my favorites. In fact Technologique Park by Orbital off their Blue album is one of my all time favorite tracks. So much so that I have a vinyl pressing of that record. With that, there's a lot to be said for the validity of VST plugins in DAW software but it doesn't really match the richness of old analog gear like what you have there because it's just too rigid in it's function on the digital side of things. I have a model of the ARP2600 which is nowhere near as good as the real thing but still produces reasonably decent sound. I'd just about kill for a Juno-60... Anyway, great stuff man. I hope you're able to continue putting these videos out for a long time into the future. I do sincerely enjoy them.

      Those Mackie 24-8 and 32-8 were very popular in the '90s and early '00s. I remember seeing them often in budget recording studios, even in New York city. Keep in mind their preamps and EQs are perhaps not as "refined" as the previous mixers of the '80s, which you can find for 1-2k , but they are not bad at all.

    Tell me, how did that work out to have one effect channel (e.g. of the SPX) going to several instrument channels from the TR?!

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  7 лет назад

      The typical way (same as I have it in this video) is to use (an) auxiliary send(s) (often shortened to aux send) on each of the TR channels, going to the channel(s) where your FX (like the SPX) is routed to. For more information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aux-send

    • @SchwizzZer
      @SchwizzZer 7 лет назад

      SynthMania Yes, but given that the SPX got one input and one output, how are you able to have the reverb effect on multiple instruments, isolated?

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  7 лет назад +1

      The other way around. The SPX return is fixed on two channels L & R, and they don't change. It's the individual sounds of the 909 that are fed to the input of the SPX via the aux sends. If you leave the aux send knob all the way to the left, you only have the dry signal from each 909 channel. If you open the aux send knob towards the right, an auxiliary send "copy" of the signal will be fed to the SPX input and you will hear more of the 909 signal going into the FX, and thus more effect on each 909 sound the more you turn the aux send knob clockwise. Then you can further tweak the balances by moving the actual faders of the dry signal(s) vs the FX signal(s)

    Synthmania how is that SSL AX? Are you able to track all 24 ins at low buffer sizes?

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  6 лет назад +1

      It's good. You're talking about a $4.5K system (3K for the interface an 1.5K for the card when I bought them years ago). On my system, I use 128 buffer samples, and get 2.9ms at 44.1KHz / 24 bit , no strain at all, even with more than 24 channels on tracking and mixing. At 64 samples buffer I can get 1.5ms and it's still solid, even though I don't need that much low latency as I mostly use hardware, 2.9 is fine for my needs.

    • @TrakLite
      @TrakLite 6 лет назад

      wow!!!!! I'm getting rid of firewire interfaces that are daisy chained because they seem to bottleneck even with an added pcie fw card, I have to run my session at minimum 256 buffer, I just spotted the SSL locally for 1200 with the pcie card :-) what OS are you using..ie is it a 64 bit OS ?

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, currently using it on a Windows 10 64-bit. I've previously also used the SSL on Windows 7 64-bit, and Apple OS 9 and X, and of course it works great on those too. FYI, the SSL driver for these interfaces installs easier on Mac OS (no effort at all). On Windows OS, it *might fight a little bit, where you have to install the driver a couple of times before it recognizes it, but after it recognizes the unit, it works perfectly on Windows too - just use the driver ver. 6.2 if you're on Windows

      @@SynthManiaDotCom My board is just like yours. I have a 16 channel snake from my tracking room to the first 16 mic inputs on the back. I have all 24 Tape Track send/recieves on the patchbay going i/o to a Motu 828es interface with Behringer ADAT extensions via thunderbolt into a Mac mini running Reaper. All my compressors and EQs work fine patched into the FX patchbay using the channel inserts. I can't get any of my revebs or delays to work on the aux sends, I've tried using the XLR sends on the botton to the inputs of the delays and reverbs, and I've tried patching from the aux 1-8 on the patchbay with the outboard gear on FX send recieves and running returns to line in on the patchbay for channels 17-24. I dont get any signal being sent on the sends when I turn the green and blue aux send knobs from the channel strips 1-16. Not sure what I'm routing wrong. I have a Lexicon Alex, Lexicon MX200, TC GMajor2, an Ibanez HD1000, Ibanez DM1000, an Effectron III, and a Lexicon Primetime Delay (that I need to repair but would love to use). Can't get signal into any of then using the aux.

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  10 месяцев назад

      First thing: you haven't mentioned that you are connected to the FX Sends and Returns. Are you? If you are not, you're never going to get it to work, you need cables connected to them. There are five sets of ELCO/EDAC connectors on the underside of the mixer: three (thinner connectors) go to the multi-track recorder and two (thicker connectors) go to the FX. Do you have cables connected to the ones that go to the FX? You have to use the ELCO/EDAC connectors on the bottom of the unit to use it, for both the multi-track recording, and for the effects. Then, use the built-in patchbay to route signals.

    • @ER-yq1lc
      @ER-yq1lc 10 месяцев назад

      @@SynthManiaDotCom Yes, I have 2 ELCO/EDAC for the recorder send/returns, and mine has been converted to 4 banks of DB25 connectors for FX 1-32. So I should use the patchbay only to route and not use the 8 XLR aux sends on the bottom? What do I need to route on the patchbayvia TT bantam cables and what do I need to turn up on the board? Do I need to have all the Aux knobs on the aux strip above the ocsilator turned all the way up as well? Thanks for the help and patience.

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  10 месяцев назад

      Yes, you need to use TT bantam patch cords. If - say - you want to run an effect from channel 1: go to the patch bay section on your mixer, put a TT cord on the Input Channels #1 Line Out to your desired Effect, for example connect it to the Effects "SND" 1. Take another TT cord and go from the "RET" to your desired "AUX" input. Then open up the aux individual and master knobs to adjust for optimal signal into your reverb/delays etc. If you have stereo input effects, just use two sends & returns, and pan the returns left and right. Keep in mind that if you use the "AUX" inputs for the returns, you'll be able to listen to the FX, but not record them. So it's best if you return the FX to other unused channels on the mixer - for example, instead of returning them to AUX 1 and AUX 2, you should return them to - say - input channels 23 and 24, so you can record them, pan them, EQ them etc. To do that, simply use the TT cable to go from Effects "RET" to the insert ret of an unused channel(s).

      I actually know how to do custom white balance. Two problems: 1. the current lighting in my studio still sucks; and 2. after spending six hours to make this 45-min video, the last thing I want to do is to spend additional time in the video editor to make the colors and the lights pretty. I mean, this is a music channel, not the set of Ben Hur. However, note taken, I'll try to fix the bad lighting in my studio.
