Wow. Kudos on being an absolute true musician displaying so many different types of sounds… and absolutely killed this one. Thanks for taking the time to make and explain the process. So fun to watch!! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks so much. So simple but I'd never have guessed this. I've been trying to work it out for weeks. Beautifully demonstrated too. I've just waded through someone else's endless wittering on but yours is crystal clear. Thanks.
Hey. I have to say your channel is awesome, very inspiring and you seem to really understand music and it's many levels, also the song was good. Keep doing the good work!
I watched RUclips of the Joy Division studio and it looks like Martin was using a 24 track with 4 sends to 2 reverbs and 2 delay effects racks. I liked how he boosted the lows and mids on the kick drum and then used a gate to cut the hiss.. The setup is probably the idea behimd the alesis quadraverbs.
That console sounds so holographic and big! Everything you play through it sounds fantastic! I'm wearing my ATH-M70x yet this sounds outside my ears and in front of my forehead, like there are invisible speakers playing in the room I'm in! God bless!
You're probably the first person I have heard that replicated the Martin Hannett sound. I'm assuming he's used a large amount of flanger in his work though, not just chorus. Have you ever tried using ambisonic plugins? That's what I've been using on my DAW these days...
Hi, on the stereo simulator box I actually only used the modulation effect, not the stereo output - yes, the output is mono here - sorry, I should have specified that.
I left a comment on another video asking about recording with you if you were local but in the chance you weren’t and you were willing to mix (of course not for free) would it be possible to send you tracks to mix? If not totally fine and love your content, thanks for putting this online 😊
Thank you for this! Was the MXL thinned out to fit the track? It was deceptively full sounding when you were talking into it with no other music just dry but I know things can often change in a mix. My singer uses a 58 for tracking and I'm getting tired of fiddling with a chain of stuff to get it to sit right..
What settings did you use for these outboard effects? Anything specific? I would love to be able to reproduce this "vibe" if even with plug-ins. I notice you have a pretty "swirly" effect going on with the H910...any settings tips for any of these different boxes? I'm on a mission. Help us Obi-Wan Di Nicolantonio....your our only hope! lol
Any digital delay plugin will do - just set it to a handful of milliseconds - like between 10 and 40 and you should get in the ballpark - remember that these early digital FX like the H910 had very small delay times, 60ms at max, so you can definitely get that with any digital delay plugin, or simply by copying your waveform audio, and moving it slightly on the timeline - you can also add some filters and other ways of "darkening" the audio output. Also, there are emulation of the H910 in plugin form, on the market - you might just want to get that
You're right, I may need to. lol. Turns out Eventide actually has an H910 Plugin. But for the otherwise $200 they're charging and as much as I would love that specific plugin, I was able to dig up a Harmonizer in the Max for Live section of my DAW (Ableton Live Suite 9.5). I was also able to dig up a pretty good spring reverb in that Max setup as well. I'm liking the results so far! I'm using a waves stereo simulator (set to the grittiest of mono > stereo settings) and am relatively pleased with the result. I feel what you have here is a really nice formula for effects that can help a mix sound "older". I'm really liking the spring reverb on the snare and overheads, so far. Really nice. Now to see where this goes for the vocals I have yet to write. lol. Thank you so much for everything here, Paolo! This kind of stuff goes under the hood, the right way, to help fill in those little holes that we all may have in the pursuit of our quest for an honest "throwback" to (what I think we both would call) the best era in underground post-punk music. All the best to you, as always! :) Keep up the good work!
I wish I knew for sure. My theory is Marshall Time Modulator - well - modulation of the ARP Omni-2, plus other EQ treatments, reverb, and AMS delays. I finally have all those types of equipment and plan to start doing research myself
really enjoyed this , superb , I learn alot from you , need to get a Marshal Time Modulator though to get the full early Hannet sound , that was his secret weapon
Chris, thank you! Yes, you're right, I've slowly been putting together some of the classic Joy Division / Hannett studio gear over the years (so far I got ARP Omni-2, Powertran Transcendent 2000, AMS DMX15-80S, spring reverb, Synare) and the Marshall Time Modulator is definitely next on the list... thanks for watching!
SynthMania , just sold my Synare 3 , had a few T 2000 s. but imo the worst Mono synths created , I know I hot them because JD used one , but mainly just on I remember nothing , Widerness , Isolation , so didnt justify keeping them , ill never part with me Omni 2 , now that is the JD sound completely , I repair ARP synths and enjoy it , only Arp I never got was the 2600 , but they only used it for Bass drum sounds anyway mainly like Decades , but would the Time Modulator bit have you seen the prices ??? around £3000
The guitar is a HH tape delay through either an HH IC100S, or an IC100 amplifier. The Watkins Copikat tape delay was used live, and an Echoplex was used just as often, including on the American tour. The trebley sound of the Telecaster is not due to the IC100, it's due to the treble bleed circuit and 1M pots used in Telecasters of that model year. The IC100 is actually super dark on the sustain channel, I know because I own one. You roll the volume knob back on the Tele and you get a severe high pass filter that overcomes the natural darkness of the sustain channel. If you watch the live footage at... I can't remember the gig, but it's the one that there is heaps of footage of on youtube, there is a scene where they are setting up and you can see the Carlsboro flanger and then in one scene they show the soundmen at the mixing desk and there is like 3 Roland Space Echos, so you know, it ain't all just Watkins copicat, I bet the whole band is going through all three of those Rolands.
Hahaha, great! You really know this stuff! I've heard countless albums sounding like that, and you fix it in a tick. You're better than Joy Division, Wolfgang Press and X-mal Deutschland.
You don't get it. These videos are technical he's not trying to make music here but help others to learn to make music. What he's singing or playing is not important, but I think his ideas are great.
Wow. Kudos on being an absolute true musician displaying so many different types of sounds… and absolutely killed this one. Thanks for taking the time to make and explain the process. So fun to watch!! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

Glad it helped!
brilliant demo - you are one of the best communicators here
Hey. I have to say your channel is awesome, very inspiring and you seem to really understand music and it's many levels, also the song was good. Keep doing the good work!
You are by far the most versatile electronic musician ever!
Excellent excellent work Paolo. Absolutely nailed the Joy Divison feel. And that bass sound really felt like something from the Curt's Faith album.
I watched RUclips of the Joy Division studio and it looks like Martin was using a 24 track with 4 sends to 2 reverbs and 2 delay effects racks. You are amazing, I learn SOOO much watching your videos. Thank you!!!!!

So happy to have randomly found this - so inspiring!
If you had online courses for synth, guitar, techno, e.c.t I would instantly join.
Really great job. Well done.
Thanks for the visit
Nossa que incrível eu amo muito musicas assim! Essa "viber", é muito doida, man!
I love it! So Dark So Dark!
Adoro questo tipo di musica , complimenti per come la riproduci 👍👏👏👏
Jak zwykle genialnie!!!
I think what's missing here is the plate reverb. In fact, everything else is so spot on, I can hear it's absence.
I can't get enough of your excellent videos. And this one is right up my street as a Gannet/JD fan. It's all spot on. Well done.
Fantastic! thanks for sharing this work
Thank you, Isaac
that was really excellent ..thank you
Thanks!
thank you my friend - synthmania is a man of golden era
Kareem, thank you!
you welcome my friend

Nice video Paolo man you have so much talent.
Lovely.
spectacular stuff!
Hi, i always enjoy your videos because i guess we have exactly the same taste of music. all the best from switzerland, beole
It didn't sound like the stereo effect was coming across might this be due to it being applied to individual mono channels?
Hi, on the stereo simulator box I actually only used the modulation effect, not the stereo output - yes, the output is mono here - sorry, I should have specified that.
Such a great video!
Great use of effects on the drums!

hi Walter, thank you for the message but unfortunately at the moment I don't have the time for mixing projects... sorry!
Tbh I don't remember... that MXL ribbon sounds really nice, but perhaps it's not particularly suited for this type of mix / genre
SynthMania It sounds pretty good over all...works well and great Job....There’s no wrong in it...it sounds good for this over all
This hit the spot.

Wow. so awesome, Paolo
Do you maybe know how they achieved such unique synth sound on ''Decades'', what effects were used? Thanks.
I wish I knew for sure. My theory is Marshall Time Modulator - well - modulation of the ARP Omni-2, plus other EQ treatments, reverb, and AMS delays. I finally have all those types of equipment and plan to start doing research myself
why is there a guitar sound on the effect return of the biamp spring reverb?
It's being sent via Aux prefader to that effect as well.
spot on!
Good job. What recording method do you use?
DAW
Awesome.
More of this, please.
Love it all.
awesome vid mate, thanks :)
Awesome
Are the drums processed at all besides the sends?
really enjoyed this , superb , I learn alot from you , need to get a Marshal Time Modulator though to get the full early Hannet sound , that was his secret weapon

kind of reminded me of sisters of mercy
Yes, I mentioned that in the description ;)
except for the voice, it's Siamese Twins by The Cure with a bit too much chorus.
I think the drums sound more like In A Lonely Place by New Order
Nice song. You like to work alone. Me too.
cool video! useful info + a sense of humor!
now show us how to make Bela Lugosi's Dead / Bauhaus ;)

Dude, just came across this vid. We should collaborate!!
Drums sounds like "In a Lonely Place" by New Order :)
Sound a bit more like "Atrocity Exhibition" to me.
Adam White It does.
Last song Ian recorded.
Hahaha, great! You really know this stuff! I've heard countless albums sounding like that, and you fix it in a tick. You're better than Joy Division, Wolfgang Press and X-mal Deutschland.
ouch!
Can you forget this kind of thing and stick with Ultravox style?
Good overall but please. Stop singing. Invite a friend or hire someone to do the job
You don't get it. These videos are technical he's not trying to make music here but help others to learn to make music. What he's singing or playing is not important, but I think his ideas are great.
New User what and how he plays and sings is not important? hahahaha
It's a style pastiche demonstrating how to track and mix a late 70's goth tune, he's not trying to record a hit, he's teaching people about technique.
apparently you have never heard Ian Curtis' voice.
I like his voice personally
