That wasn't stains on the wood. It was charred. The rings were made by a black smith. They are applied to the wood when it's wet. The rings were nailed in and the ring under pressure. As the wet wood was crushed, it cooled the ring and the char made it strong. Watch a video on how wood whisky barrels are made, same technique.
Another interesting fact about charting wood
Bugs think it's dead and won't touch it
I was thinking the same thing, but then it really is a decorative piece and the restoration wasn't to make it strong enough to build a wooden schooner.
@@KellyMurphy
It was cool looking before the restoration.
Exactly. I love a lot of restorations, but really liked the patina on the hammer as it was. Sanding off all those years of use :( really didn't understand texturizing the metal bands like they were automotive? Pretty cool bit of tool history at any rate.
@@KellyMurphy Then it really isn't a restoration.
Save your sawdust and fill the cracks with wood glue. Once the glue is in there, pack sawdust in on top of it. When you sand it down and stain it, you might not even notice where the cracks were.

It’s funny how he’s been wearing gloves every video
I actually got to use the mighty Sledge-o-matic at a Gallagher show. Having worked construction I knew how to swing a sledge, I obliterated the watermelon and was walking off when Gallagher tugged at my shirt sleeve smiled and said "good job". That was definitely a day I'll remember for a long time.
I feel robbed. All I thought of was Gallagher
RIP Gallagher.
This feels like animal crossing villager dialogue
TysyTube: I shall fix *EVERYTHING.*
Also TysyTube: *nah, i don’t feel like fixing my tools..*
This mallet reminds of one of those gigantic mallets used by cartoon characters to clobber their enemies with.
* bonk *
Made me think of Harley Quinn!
Usopps 10-T hammer
City Hunter ? =)
It reminds me more of my childhood on the parents farm, where we used a mallet just like that to hammer in fence posts for the cattle pasture. We had a big 5kg metal hammer too, but the wooden mallet was easier to use. It's bigger size made it easier to hit the post with a full swing.
That looks like the kind of hammer that would turn someone into an accordion.

The sandblasting is an 11 for me. SO satisfying to see a huge change in colour! This was amazing! So cool!
I've been watching a lot of these restoration vids lately; your sandblast to remove rust has been the best, most efficient method I've seen so far! I rate this: TEN.
Thor: 'I have the mightiest hammer of them all!'
TySyTube: 'Be right back...'
Lol
I make a new one
The addition of the word ‘New’ makes me believe that you have a much more ancient and arcane giant hammer lying somewhere in your house.
Lol I love this comment
@@gojirazillasaurus6341 😂 same
Not gonna lie, this is one of my favorite restorations you’ve done. Not as complex as some of your other projects, but so beautiful and satisfying.
2 years ago and till now, i still find the chuck noris part funny😂😂
"I'll put that flea in a box, then I'll put that box inside of another box, and then I'll mail that box to myself and when it arrives..." *Pulls out this freaking thing* "I'LL SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER!"
Bruh you forgot her evil laugh, that’s like the most important part 🥺
Nice, an Emperors New Groove Reference
Yes I remember that
oh yeah its all coming together
It's brilliant! BRILLIANT! *BRILLIANT!*
I am so glad that you decided to preserve the wood! There’s so much character in that wood from decades past. All too often, restorations choose to replace the wood with something newer, which I see as an absolute travesty. Bravo!
I mean, most of the item here is the wood so it wouldn't be much of a restoration if he got rid of it
@@refrigeratorNO Ha ha ha, I guess you’ve got a point there! Still laughing!
I saw some circus folks use very similar sized hammers in Germany back in the very early 1980's. They were setting-up the main tent, which was HUGE, and they were using the large wooden mallets to pound the wooden tent stakes into the ground. Plus, they used the mallets for adjusting the large wooden poles holding up the tent, etc. Very nice video!
These projects make two different hearts beat in my chest. One is impressed by those detailed restorations, the other one is saying that those „artefacts“ ALL are telling a story, a part of history, and i REALLY want to know them 😅
I gotta say it, those rings where forge pressed on
The "stains" were actually burns from it.
The rings where still hot and were pressed onto the wood burning them into place and then the nails were added after.
It is AWESOME that you know that!
Totally agree with Atlas, you can tell with a glance if you know what you are looking for.
If you want to watch the process, just pull up the Engels Coach Shop channel as the same process is used to put the steel ‘tires’ on wagon wheels.
That is what I was thinking also. I watched Dave make a lot of wheels.
Can we just appreciate that he named the wooden peg Pinocchio XD
Also I rate the sand blasting 10/10
And the little hammer Geppetto😂

Pov you've angered a horde of bees
King Dedede will be so happy you took care of it!
“That’s it, I’m gettin’ me Mallet!”

And on this day, TySy Tube broke the perfect ASMR streak with the trumpeting of an elephant.

I don't know what's more impressive, the restoration or the camera quality...
I thought this was a novelty from a long time ago then I realized that with a long enough handle this is a very feasible tool for its time
A piece of history preserved. Comedian Gallagher should add this to his collection of "Sledge-O-Matics"
I saw him live back in like 09-10, super awesome show but I wish I was sitting up front lol.
@@Badenhawk My ex-wife and I saw him in Nashville around 2002 or so. So glad we got to see him perform. He kicked a drunk woman out for being stupid. Her husband was pissed but Gallagher said he could stay 🤣
@@Badenhawk I had tickets to see him like 2nd row, but it ended up being the same day as an very important deadline at work and we were already in emergency mode trying to make that, I couldn't walk away. By the time I realized I wasn't able to go, I was already to busy to give the tickets away.
@@TheBaldr oh man! I hate when work interferes with stuff like that. I hear he's touring soon though, maybe you will get your chance?
I was really hoping for a Sledge-O-Matic style montage at the end.
Calling it the Sledge-O-Matic with no watermelon is blasphemy.

I thought of the hammer in smash bros
I’m a bit torn. I think the hammer was really cool before and it still looks cool now. However, I can’t help but think that it may be better just to make a new hammer using the old as a template rather than change its rustic character. To each their own! If you saved it from destruction then more power to you!
This dude would be out of business if he just bought new stuff and never restored anything.
The whole idea of this channel is the restoration :)
Y'all miss the point
TheDecoyDude meant that it's age and overall look made it look special, and in his opinion shouldn't have been restored (I think, correct me if I'm wrong)
I agree I think he should have at least left the wood alone and not sanded it and taken off it’s natural protection and patina
I was waiting for a comment that said what I was thinking
This guy will 100% survive in the zombie apocalypse no cap😂
Habe alle deine Videos gesehen...und vergleichsweise auch von anderen...Du bist der Meister der Restauration. Zweifellos!
Can you imagine the ships that were built with that hammer? Imagine the men that used it every day to make those ships. If that hammer could only tell us it’s life story. A beautiful piece of wooden ship building history... transformed into a cartoon prop.
One of the few who “actually gets it”
Whew….🏆
Yeah, that bummed me out, too. I thought he was going to restore it, not turn it into a toy or display piece. Those things are hard to come by.
It's one of the reasons I've kind of stopped going out of my way to watch his videos. He slowly stopped doing actual restoration work in favor of goofy and silly renovations.
Okay I'm lost. What's wrong with the way he restored it? Looks fine to me. What could be have done that was more respectful?

Also, the screeching sound from those smashed pufuleți, left a mark in me...
I swear this channel gets more and more satisfying as new projects come along. The knurling on the “crowns” was such an excellent choice.

I've seen these to bash in stakes for circus tents.
The scissors you used to cut the sandpaper needs a bit of loving too. Lol
When the camera went through the hammer, it was SICK.

I believe that type of mallet is referred to as a beetle. Those iron rings are super important for the sake of the life of the tool. It holds the wood together under the stress of impact. I love tools :)
You're supposed to heat the bands just shy of glowing to expand them then fit them in place hot and drench with water to compress them in place before the wood starts to burn too much. The nail only serves as insurance. Also, the rings are vaguely conical, so one must be careful not to put them on upside-down. These techniques are adapted from the realm of the wheelwrights.
