My 7 year old and I look very your videos. He is on the autism spectrum and recently told me.he wants to fix old metal things. So we found an old rusty pipe wrench in our garage and we have started to slowly restore it. So far a good vinegar soak and some scrubbing with a wire brush. Hoping to work with him on it more this week. It's been great finding an interest he has through watching your channel and has given us another way to connect with him. ❤
The metal isn't turning white; it's turning the color of bare metal. It appears brighter because you see the contrast between the freshly sandblasted portions and the raw, rust pitted portions. Also, the deformations and crevices in the metal allow the grit to scour tiny scratches all over but it's not smooth enough to achieve a mirror polish so what you're left with is metal that's clean enough to reflect light evenly but not smooth enough to reflect it perfectly, if that makes sense. It happens with any metal item that's sandblasted. Of course, the media that is used also makes a difference.
@ivanmit3366 oxidation varies upon the composition of the metal and the environment its in, but yes- that's why you see content creators applying oil to freshly blasted parts, to act as a moisture and oxygen barrier. The oil can easily be removed to apply the desired final finish.
@edwardsdarkmistress in a sense, yes; I'll admit I've not yet finished the video- because life happens- but unless he's hardened the metal or done something else to affect its structure, then it's obviously in a more brittle condition than when it was originally issued. That being said, it's very likely that this knife won't see anything remotely serious enough to stress the blade.
I also guess that all the microscopic crevices and pits left from the rusting helps scattering light in a way that makes it white (it's not uncommon for porous materials to look bright/white)
Dude the fact that you turned something so beyond repair into something that is not only beautiful but incredibly functional???? That's beyond incredible 👏🏻🔥🖤 love your work so much

4:58 becuase the surface of the knife has been physically polished quite roughly and it cuase a diffused reflection, otherwise the smoothly polished surface cause the perfect reflection.
Besides the obvious expert craftsmanship, I am always stunned by the creativity of these works of art… how people get a picture in their mind of what COULD be versus what is.
Recently I was talking to a friend of mine about most satisfying RUclips channels and yours came to mind. Turns out my mate is also subscribed to your channel! Shout out to Fré for having good taste too! Btw, thanks for being back, missed your craftsmanship! Keep up the good work!

13:19 I've always wondered why when I see these restoration videos submerging something in liquid like rust remover they don't use something like glass marbles to reduce the amount of liquid they use. I think this is the first time I've seen this done in a restoration video.
What a beautiful result! I love how you incorporated the damage into the final design instead of trying to make it appear like brand-new. Absolutely lovely - and such a blast to see your video back on my feed!

Very cool restoration - I really like the plating idea: the knife has so much character from all those interesting rust pits, but you don't want to to start rusting again. Plating is a great solution (and something different from cold blueing).

At first, I thought the whole thing would end up in your rust jar. A work of art, it turned out beautifully.
So does that mean that the sandblasting reveals true color of the metal? Does it change color pretty soon after with oxidation?
@ivanmit3366 oxidation varies upon the composition of the metal and the environment its in, but yes- that's why you see content creators applying oil to freshly blasted parts, to act as a moisture and oxygen barrier. The oil can easily be removed to apply the desired final finish.
I have additional question: with the holes in the knife, doesn’t mean the metal is compromised and could easily break?
@edwardsdarkmistress in a sense, yes; I'll admit I've not yet finished the video- because life happens- but unless he's hardened the metal or done something else to affect its structure, then it's obviously in a more brittle condition than when it was originally issued.
