to everyone complaining about this video: there are still people getting into SSBM as we speak, so if they wanna learn to wavedash, this very informative video is probably the first thing they'll see.
been a casual player back in the day. thought id play some old games again and thought id look this up on chance. never knew there was a competivive edge to the game. and now im trying to master this technique lol. never heard of it until now... and it seems insanely hard to do how its done by the mario in this video. really kind of funny, used to play this all the time back in the day with my friends and none of us knew anythign about this stuff. i was already better then most of my friends without knowing any of this stuff. now i have to master this all and convince them to play again so i can be a god lol

Well, there’s a point in the actual game where Susie figures out a puzzle that Berdly couldn’t, and Berdly says “You’re cheating!! J…just like when you wavedash!”
As someone who never played Melee, seeing Wavedashing explained here puts it in clear terms. It's like using the air strafe's momentum to propel forward or back, from the looks and sounds of it
This is so perfect and concise. Puts the same segment from the documentary to shame. I fully intend to recommend The Big House stream to non-smashers now, because of knowing resources like this will be there for them.
I can honestly say that even though I just started playing this game again and I suck complete ass, this technique seriously draws me in so fucking much and keeps me playing the game.
to wavedash: do a short jump(gently press X or Y button), tilt joystick diagonally towards the bottom left or right side, press the L or R botton fast enough that you are close to the ground, but it will be an air dodge. Since you will air dodge into the ground and if done correctly, you will do a wavedash.
Wow, I've been playing for years and I had no idea. This is really going to help!! But for real, this is a really good refresher in the techniques of wavedashing/wavelanding because I certainly haven't mastered it all - especially wavedash out of shield - and will help me be more mindful of how to use them. Thank you!
Protip: if you're not into muscle memory territory yet, it is very recommendable to learn to use shield with one of the triggers and wavedash with the other, so that you can have a way easier time doing wavedash out of shield (just hold shield with one trigger and wavedash out with the other. Personally, I use R only for wavedashing, and L for teching, L cancel and shielding. Good luck!
Memo_Mj that's a good advice let's push it even further : when you are in game, Pause, unplug your controller, hold one trigger of your choice and then replug. Doing this will sacrifice the ability to lightshield with the selected trigger, but will make your powershields more consistent. (this was popularised by armada I believe) Now you can wavedash out of Lightshield and Powershield at will with enough practice, however you gonna have to pick your comfy side for this ( I like to l-cancel and powershield with L, and Wavedash with R, I also wavedash with L but it's less natural thus im more prone to WDOoPS)
I just hit the competitive scene back in february, and back then, i had trouble even wavedashing, but now i'm wavedashing all over the place. I'm a luigi main, so wavedashing is crucial. The forst thing i got down was dash dancing, and then wavedashing. I later found out about wavelanding and started doing that. Then i learned crouch cancelling and l cancelling. Then i picked up abate's moonwalking, which is like pivoting, but throw wavedashing into the mix. Wavedash backwards, dash, and wavedash backwards again. I'm currently trying to master di and sdi. I've already figured out how to di out of falcon's uairs, and how to di to avoid getting pillared by a falco. I've almost got powershielding down as well.
OHHHHH SO *THAT'S* WAVEDASHING! I WAS WONDERING HOW YOU BIDOU IN MELEE!!! So, for the newer players in the Big House 6 stream? Nice. Good to see someone's gonna try to help the more casual players with understanding the movement.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Finally now know how to do this?!? Been looking for a few days and finally something that shows a very introductory step by step to wave dashing!!!
To the complainers, this and the dash dance one are useful to show people who have little to no intention of playing at least a little bit about the game. I'd show this to like my brothers or my parents.
I can't wavedash. I've practiced so much and I still cant get it. Is there any tricks or practice methods that I can use to learn this and then once I get the hang of it practice it faster?
Firstly you probably have barely practiced it, it's not something you can get the first time you try it. People have been playing for years and still mess up sometimes Practice going straight downwards first, so that you don't leave the ground. Once you get this timing down, do the same button presses but instead of straight down try going at an angle. The better you get at it the further you can go
So that’s what that one guy would do 20 years ago when he kept whooping my ass in melee. I thought he just mastered time manipulation or instant transmission.
I know what wavedashing is, but what's the best way to learn it? I've been practicing it forever and I still can't do it unless I'm super focused on it and not actually fighting...
I feel like you should mention that it is possible to not wavedash the maximum distance the character is not capable of wavedashing. The way it was phrased you made it seem like Marths wavedash was a fixed distance that was the right distance for that scenario.
Honestly, I think it's a lot easier to wavedash as Samus, maybe use that as practice, maybe? Then slowly work up to your main's regular wavedashing speed.
Can you guys do a video on why pros will do an arial off screen. does it help them recover? i see hungrybox do it with fair alot, and mango does it with up air when he plays fox.
Mostly just something to do. In some matchups it can be useful to bat away projectiles like turnips/missiles. It also takes your character out of tumble, which lets you use airdodge as a recovery option without burning your double jump.
I play melee for more than 2 hours straight not knowing how to do it, I need to know which buttons need to press and how to do it. Also, you said wave landing which I’m not sure how to do so if anyone could let me know how to do it then that will be helpful, thank you.
can anyone tell me if haxshining(jump canceling shine in dash dance range) is any good competitively. for me it works well against characters that get knocked down by shine because I can only wavedash down afterwards just because how technical the input is. so once they are knocked down and I wavedash down I can tech chase them. Do other top players besides hax do this input. for me it seems like maybe one of the hardest in the game.
Breck the FG Mac, it is called the Luigi slide. Anything makes him slide from hitting his shield, to rocket/missfiring, to legit getting hit in general.
Are there any games that have a similar movement like wave dashing?
