Spray Chrome Clear Coat Tests, Finding the Perfect Clear Coat

  • Every spray on chrome I have ever used has had issues when clear coated. Spray on silver has it's issues too. If you spray chrome paint on your lures, or anything else, you have probably seen your shiny finish go gray and dull. In this video I review tests I did on Spaz Stix and Looking Glass chrome sprays. Then I run a new set of tests to see what clear coat is best for two part spray on silver. www.amazon.com...

    Great stuff! Having worked with engineers my whole career I am very comfortable with the way you approach things. My focus on lure making is more casual/practical in that I am handcrafting wooden copies of commercial lures that have become ridiculously expensive at $15 to $25 each! Really appreciate you sharing your experience and the results of your tests. All the best and Merry Christmas!

    I bet the haze you got from the UV was because it was cold. I use the same UV, and the first time I used it I got a very dull finish. I contacted Alumilite who recommended putting the bottle in a bowl of hot tap water for about 5 mins. Now I do it every time and I get crystal clear results every time. I say that because you started out by saying “it is cold”. Great video.

      You'll see that in the video I had the clear coats all warming up in front of a heater...
      The finish was glossy but it had a very slight affect on the silver..but, you're right it's worth experimenting a bit more with the UV.

    Built a lot of props so here is a tip for this or that spray chrome can paint clear....
    Modpodge the surface watered down multiple airbrush coats or wet sanding then spray or use self leveling 2 part epoxy or spray clear.

    • @droid_protocol_official
      @droid_protocol_official Год назад

      I’m confused about what you wrote. Are you saying you wet sand the midlpoge after you’ve top coated it onto the chrome?
      Isn’t there a risk of burning through the modpoge layer and ruining the chrome layer?

      you're right that one is the one with the floor wax. using the floor wax was an afterthought , I knew it would be very good if not the best. But it's only a midcoat. It looks darker than the others because I messed up the silver plate on the first attempt and when I cleaned it off the painted part of the spoon stayed dark,

    Thank you for the very informative video sir! Just a question, suppose for small parts like action figure armor pieces where I would only silver plate some parts, and I won't be able to dip the whole piece in floor polish, would it have the same results if I just drop or brush some floor polish on it? Thanks!

  • @bluepill85
    @bluepill85 4 года назад +1

    not a metallurgical guy myself but would the results be skewed by different application methods? i.e. dipping cuts off all contact with air. where spraying may cover irregularly and have parts of the silver exposed to oxygen? would that cause corrosion under the clear? seemed like the better results were from dipping.... except the automotive which probably has more to do with the thinners used in the the product than the application method? great video. look forward to further nerd sessions!

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  4 года назад

      I have been doing these kinds of experiments with this stuff for over 6 years. But you're right, often the method of application makes a difference. The thinner and the propellants in spray cans often are the problem, but unfortunately the results have often been inconsistent. The 2K automotive clear is the typical method that folks use. I don't like the complications involved in using it. Using a safe midcoat is the most reasonable way.

    I still would like to see you try the Molotow liquid Chrome. It sprays and cleans great and is by far the best besides your plating silver.
    Also Bob Smith 30 min Epoxy is most popular brush on clear and maybe you can add this.
    KBS is most popular dipping clear and would be nice to see it included.
    Most would still like to paint over the chrome. Black back, markings etc. and then add a final durable coat.
    Thanks for your time and money spent on this testing.
