Just going through your older videos. I have watched you for over 3 yrs my friend! I have an employee I've gotten into the hobby, now he's hooked and ready to order his Barbatos Rex swallowtail! He was asking about chrome. I knew right away to find your video and share it with him! How far we've all come thanks to your efforts! And for that I'm proud to say I'm a patreon and so thankful for all you do!
This stuff is off the chain! Never thought chrome paint would ever be possible.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Chrome is my specialty. Check out my channel
@barbatosrex9473 I was messing around with fingernail paint... the kind that you brush on some kind of UV-cured base, and then apply the metallic flake. I gotta admit... it looks pretty good. Only drawback is that it's suitable for small items.
Your stuff.... good lord... IMPRESSIVE. Both shades you showed are remarkable. Good stuff.
One question...
Why is it that these chrome products require a black background? Would it be because black is actually the absence of all color?
Thanks for your time.
I tried this years ago and didn’t know what I was doing, glad to know I needed to perfect it and do it right like your video now I am extremely confident I can finish my project 14 years later hahaha, I was trying to restore a plastic chrome figure defect and the base on the figures was chrome!! Thank you so much!!
If you want to protect your chrome, use Allclad's clear coat on top. It will make it a bit foggy, but there is a fix. Apply some 2K automotive clear gloss paint on top of Allclad's clear coat. When the Allclad clear dries, it has a rough bumpy surface, which isn't really visible to the naked eye, and that diffuses the finish on the chrome. You absolutely MUST use Allclad's clear before you use the 2K clear, because the 2K will destroy the chrome paint. The end result is almost mirror like, and it will stay that way for a long time.
How about Alclad Aqua clear coat? Same solution?
@@garylai9248 I just saw this and about to use Alclad. Did you ever find out/try this?
Thanks for the tip. That seems to be an issue with all the chrome paints. I give it a try for sure
I got that same rough, bumpy texture from Alclad's Aqua Gloss clear on normal paint but I was told it's because I didn't start with a wet coat. Instead, I sprayed a light tack/mist coat, like you would normally do for spray cans etc.. Apparently it likes only wet coats. Areas where I unintentionally sprayed it heavier were definitely smoother. I'll try only wet coats on my next car.
To follow up on this, I did only medium wet coats on my next car and it was very smooth. Not sure if all of their clear's should be sprayed like that but I have to assume so. I just got some of their Gloss Klear Kote and the directions also say medium coats, same as Aqua Gloss's directions.
I always find myself back on this channel when I'm looking for specific paints, haha. Great work man
Thanks buddy 👍
I've just purchased these 2 chrome's and the primer and can't wait to use them...I found you video very informative and put together great....keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Thanks buddy and good luck, those are great paints
Hey, I just realised that I very frequently watch your videos to help me know what paints works for what I need, but never comment on it. So I really would like to thank you a lot for what you do ! Alclad is unavailable where I live (France) so it's quite expensive to get (about 20 to 25€ a bottle), so you helped me a lot of useless expenses haha ! Thank you very very much for all your work !
Glad I could help in some way 👍
Exactly the detailed video I was looking for. Thank you.
Thank you for the tip about being able to buff out the chrome. Thank you for what you do!
That does look great. I never thought I'd see a paint on chrome look that good.
Hi fella. Cheers for your alclad 2 videos. Really helpful. On a side note, alclad 2 paints originated in the Norwich, England in 1999. A factory was opened in 2001 in the USA so the product would be available to you guys. There is a company that is American called Alclad but they produce fully coated cookware products . Easily mistaken for each other .
Wow the reflective resulting effect is awesome. I was looking for some options for a chrome paint and am thoroughly impressed by what you got!
Alclad is some of the best paint in my collection. I'll be testing more here in a few days. I'd pick some up you'll be pleased with the results. For the record, when I say best paint in my collection, here is my paint collection
instagram.com/p/CAbRT9dD6Ie/?igshid=gaza6zc86fbo
@@barbatosrex9473 Quite the collection! What's your opinion on Alclad vs Gaia Notes in terms of their lacquer paints? Also, I've been reading that some ppl are having issues with the Alclad gloss black primer not sticking/chipping too easily, have you experienced this?
@@miisakachan8727 I have to say I've never had a problem with their Gloss black base. I also use Mission Model Paints Gloss black base and that's great too. I just got their regular black, gray and white primers in so I'll be testing those soon. Also I just ordered Badger's new Gloss black primer so we'll see how that is. As far as Gaia goes, I like it. Now it's not head and shoulders above the rest, I see it as just as good as Mr Color and therefore prefer Mr bacause it's half the price. Do you have a request for me testing a brand of paint?
@@barbatosrex9473 Have you tried Vallejo's Metal Colors lineup? I've seen some pretty good reviews on them, they're acrylic paints however.
@@miisakachan8727 I just got a bunch of the Vallejo Metal colors in. Test video is coming soon
man that's so gorgeous, you can see your reflection in the chrome for crying out loud!
This company is just down the road from me here in Tennessee. I love their paints.
as always THANKS FOR DOING ALL THESE !!!! All Alclad is perfect. ALL HAIL ALCLAD. Their primer is BY FAR the best primer.
Thanks for this. I've ordered these. Can't wait to use them for my London bus for the seat frames.
Thanks for the video, I’ve been looking for a decent alternative to Vallejo since it’s so expensive, and the fact this stuff is even better is a win win!
Amazing video and workmanship
Absolutely Great Demo !
I like using the black chrome right on top of my chrome parts in my car models to tone down the bright fake look of the included chrome pieces, works great every time. Great line up these Alclad paints.
These are great paints. Some of my favorites in my inventory. That's a great type, I dont like model chrome at all. I always strip the chrome off my car rims and repaint it chrome. I'll try your technique next 👍
@@barbatosrex9473 I bought their entire line up just to have in case the company doesn't stick which happens lol. Their Candies are great especially for Car bodies and Gundams, I enjoyed your video on them as I do all your paint videos.
Awesome video & great tips! I've been looking for an application that would simulate polished stainless-steel on an aluminum apple watch. The Alclad Black Chrome looks like it might be a perfect solution. Any experience or guesses as to how the finish would hold up with occasional water exposure: pool, ocean, etc?
Rex, I need a comparison between Klear and Aqua gloss over all the different paints! Which is worth the money!? You da man!
These tutorials are awesome! Thanks.
You're welcome buddy and thanks for watching
That black paint is awesome! Most gloss black paint doesn't cover in less than 2 coats, and being RTS (ready to spray) makes it that much better. 🙂👍
I use their Gloss Black Base for everything, it's a great paint
Thank you for the kind words, it's very much appreciated 👍
Great video, thanks for posting. Awesome info!
You're welcome, thank you for taking the time to watch
I lived in New York for 28 years. Now in Houston. Your accent is so nostalgic, makes me feel at home.
Nice to know my Italian Rhode Island accent brings to mind your memories of home
You sound like a New Yorker! I guess, its the North East Accent :)
Thanks! Just tried it and it is awesome!
Great stuff! Did you keep the airbrush at 20 psi for the chrome/black chrome also?
I tried spraying the chrome tonight for a gundam kit, the chrome ended up looking more silver. Before i spray the chrome i applied alclads gloss black base.
Am i doing something wrong or will aquagloss correct this with a reflect glossy mirror effect?
It look great my question to you is those that paint work on soft plastic or rubber and don’t stay tacky or sticky
Really great results!! I might have to start building car models again. Wow!
Thanks for watching, come back to the hobby, we'll be waiting for you. 😀
@@barbatosrex9473 Thank you! Your channel is great. I very much appreciate all the research and testing you put into evaluating paints and products. It certainly helps us average joes.
I did come back to the hobby a few years ago, mostly building 1/35th scale tanks. I was heavy into car models in my younger years. The paint finish and chrome trim is so critical with car models. I'd like to get good enough to finally do that right.
@@jamiesworkshop3198 I love car models. In particular imports, being in the US getting imports when I was young was tough but now it's different. I just ordered a ton of kits directly from Japan and I'm going to start painting them using actual auto paint.
I like these Alclad metallic paints. I use them on my accented bicycle small parts & accessory mounts. There are some clear reds I spray over solid reds that adds depth to to reds. No 2 reds come out exact. There are other clear colors you may create some unique finishes.
This paint can be used on polycarbonate ? the spoons already had a primer base? I really liked the ability to cover with few passes and the shine
I always thought Alclad were English. Looking at the label there is the Union Jack and Stars and Stripes so maybe both or something! They look amazing. Thanks for the video.
I'm in England and my Alclad says made in uk on the bottle.. Great products thanks for the review and recommendations
Yes, it is made in the UK. They also have a US office in Tennessee. It's great paint that serves a specific purpose.
These videos are so helpful! What would the alclad holomatic spectral chrome look like over the glossy black and chrome? If you ever did a video of that, that’d be sweet!
It looks awesome over any color. I love the stuff. I just in another brand of holomatic paint, I will do a comparison soon with all of them on different colors
After spraying gloss black base, I noticed there are some dust particles trapped by paint. What would you recommend in such situation? Sand with high grit (which one?) sand paper? Strip and try again?
Hey, I was wondering if that aqua gloss stuff holds up well against water. I'm making a full set of Mandalorian armor, and I plan on doing photoshoots out in the snow and rain. Also thank you for making this demo, it was very informative. I'm extremely new to airbrushing.
Aqua Gloss might not hold up to the elements. It's primarily for models. You might have to go with a 2K Gloss. It's made for automobiles and stands up to abuse. I'll be testing some 2K over the chrome soon so look out for that
Looks real great, would it work on headlight restoration, as in handle heat, the lens is plastic, the original chrome coating is very tired
Love alclad man its some amazing stuff
Hi, could you tell me what size nozzle/ needle you are using to spray these please.
Paul from NB Canada. I hear there are two separate Alclad chromes, new and old formula. Is this the newer one with the shinier label? Also how does this do up against Inspiration chrome paints? Thanks
Wow! Pretty awesome 💯
great video. i use alclad a lot but ive never tried the black chrome or the gloss black base. ill have to give it a try
It's as good as I say it is. You'll be pleased with your purchase for sure
WOW excellent chrome paint
This is a great brand
I was originally tempted to use the Molotow chrome refill in an airbrush since they said you could do it, and I love their pens anyhow, but this seems to look better than even that. Any thoughts on that?
I would go with Alclad. The Molotow marker liquid was meant to be applied brushed on. Alclad is solely made for the airbrush. I'm sure it might airbrush fine but I would stick with what was made for the airbrush specifically. Plus I think cost might come into play also. Molotow isn't cheap. But I'm truly impressed with Alclad's results. I'm doing another video this week with another brands metal colors and chrome.
Be careful with Alclad, the more layers you add, the foggier it is. So you could have stopped at 1 or 2 layers on the chrome. If you keep building it up, it starts to look like aluminium.
You are absolutely correct
Did you mean alunimum
@@patrykkwiatkowski8474 No. I meant Aluminium, as the metal, not the American misspelling. Do you call Cadmium, Cadmum too?
@@dunka12 it was a joke mate, the dude in the vid always says alunimum. r/woosh
@@dunka12 Ah yes, that European snobbery poking it's ugly head up once again. Gotta love it.
Colour me impressed 👌
I know this has been 2 years ago but, I thought I'd watch it again. The question is , Do you have to use the same paint product or can you use Tamyia's gloss black instead as the base color?
I need to paint a set of white plastic guitar humbuckers chrome. The Alclad II 5114 Chrome for Lexan 3oz (aerosol) was recommended. I do not have a spray gun. What should I put underneath the Lexan? Will a regular gloss black primer/paint work? If so....does it need to be enamel, laquer, etc? Getting confused. Thanks!
What size of the needle are you using?
I used black chrome today and although the black base was perfect not there are some wierd dots on the chrome. The gloss is there just this texture is bothering me
Hi mate just watched the allclad chrome painting on your chanel they are amazing I do customizing to diecast where can I get the paints and which ones would u recommend I also want the blueing one regards tony
Is it okay not to prime parts when using alclad gloss black base?
Not only racing cars exhaust also the Tamiya Kawasaki H2R fuel tank and side cowlings.. (Blk Chrome) Thank you for your help!
Will these yellow when exposed to the sun? Do you recommend a top coat for UV protection? I am building a Tamiya Semi truck this winter and used your recommendations. Going with Alclad Candy Violet and want to strip the cheap looking chrome off the plastic and go with this chrome. You videos are super helpful btw, because of you I went with the GSI Creos Procon Boy PS-289 as my first brush.
I don't believe you will have a problem with yellowing but I would protect anyway with Aqua Gloss. The Aqua Gloss makes it super durable and resistant to heavy handling. Watch my video on testing the durability. Definitely go with Aqua Gloss
Been trying this lately, on a perfect gloss black base but the struggling to get a nice Chrome finish, seems quite speckled, any ideas? Using a 0.3m nozzle at 15psi.
I have glass globs with copper foil wrapped around edge. Can I spray the foil and then remove the paint from the glass without masking it off?
Im blown away.that is some good stuff.which local stores have it in stock and can you use 2k clear on it?
You can but it takes away a little bit of the chrome effect. I will test it out and post a picture here
Love the videos! I think I'm going to use the black chrome for my Mandolorian. Thoughts?
I have that kit. I was thinking black chrome myself. It's one of my favorite colors. It's probably a perfect color for it
Nice . Thanks for sharing
Thanks for this, I've invested in a Harder & Steenbeck infinity CR+ and am about to jump in on the Alclad line of metallics.
Quick ask, would it be possible to do a comparison video or IG picture with all of your alclad metallic spoons next to each other - thinking it could be a good way to show the colours and reflectivity against each other, while they're all under the same light source
After I seal the chrome i put a French ultramarine blue oil thinned with oil medium and oms. I let it sit for a bit. Then I hit it LIGHTLY with a rag that is barely damp with oms. It makes a beautiful blue chrome steel. Very realistic.
Please read need help and thanks
So I paint 1/64 cars and I use molotow Chrome for a base for candy spectra flame paint and 2k automotive clear but been watching all your videos and love them got some alclad chrome to try out and the they turned out great but when I put the clear on the Is the black base color bleed through so I put a heavy wet coat on one to see what would happen and a lot of black bleed through I used splash blue clear and tru-color high gloss kandy apple red never had an issue with molotow should I use there clear over chrome or the paint any help be greatly appreciated thanks love your videos
Thanks for the video I’ve been looking for a black chrome for the mandalorian model it’s the right sheen
Nice one how would that cover a 4” square area looks dam good 👍
Great Video! Ive used Alclad for years and seems no one has usurped its throne even in 2021! This might be a bit off Topic but what are you using for your Paint Booth?
Its a Testors Aztek that's manufactured by Spar Max. I put a link to a similar one in my airbrush set up video. Thanks for watching
Excelent tutorial is very easy and effective thanks for sharing
Your comments are much appreciated, thanks for watching. More chrome and metal paint tests coming this week
Hello, wonder if this alclad chrome lacquer allow to spray over acrylic paint base or oil paint base?
Couple of years late, but did you ever make that video about printing your own decals?
What type of air brush do you use as well as your airsource for spraying .
Can you mix candies with that chrome since they are a dye? I would love to find a blood red chrome or orange chrome .
Can I use the white gloss primer? The store where I bought the paint only had the white primer and I wasn't aware that there are several
Any tips on this? I cant get mine to do that in 30 seconds. I end up using a lot of product to get something far less impressive. Im doing it at 13psi to 15psi range and I've tried far away, mid, and close up, but i end up with lots of imperfections, mostly long lines going up and down the spoon.
Excellent video appreciate it. I usually exclusively use acrylics through my airbrush is it difficult to get this cleaned out after use?
I find solvent paints to be easier to clean than acrylics. A quick shot of thinner or Acetone and it's clean. Because solvent paints are super thin when you spray them making them easy and fast to clean out the brush
Awesome Video! What do you use for top coat?
I use Alclad Aqua Gloss. Check out my video I posted on it recently
have you tried Molotow chrome ? i tried the markerds and its crazy amazing
Damn! Pretty great results! I have to find out the best way to remove old flaking chrome from plastic, so I can refinish it. I probably am writing this early and I’ll be shown how maybe even in this video! Otherwise I’m sure that your channel will have a video on such a simple topic.
Caustic soda (lye) does it beautiful
Can it be used for a rubber material like marvel legends stuff?
I know the instructions for Alclad Chrome are pretty clear about using it on a gloss black surface, but I'm curious if I could still get the chrome effect over a very dark blue metallic coated in a high gloss lacquer clear coat. Also, if you spray the black chrome over a high gloss dark gray, would it be more chrome and less black chrome?
It works great over dark metallic blue. I actually tested it in one of my videos. I will be testing it on several different base colors in an up coming video
Not sure if u notice, I had already used three bottles of the Alclad gloss black base sometimes it has a tiny piece on the paint surface. It will on the paint surface once in a while. Not sure if anyone has this as well?
I just started trying Alclad. Bought at my local hobby shop, and made in USA. Support local businesses.
Right I'm buying some Black Chrome now. For a project
Great choice, one of my favorites
Hey Rex, I've tried and tried to get this effect, I've nailed the gloss black, but every time I apply the chrome it's immediately foggy with no clarity at all. I've tried 5psi up to 30psi, near and far, and light mists to a real hosing down. Any tips? It just looks like brushed on aluminum to me
Do you recommend spraying Alclad Chrome with a 0.3mm or 0.5mm?
Hi Barbatos Rex! I love your videos and your IG page. Super informative. Thank you for making all these videos because they've helped me a ton.
I do have a question though. What if there is a haze after spraying? You mentioned in the video that you'd show how to buff the spoon or piece in order to increase the mirror finish. I also wish you showed us how the sword turned out after painting with the mirror finish since that is exactly what I am trying to achieve for my gundam weapons accessories i.e. Astray Red Frame swords. Would you happen to have any instructions on how to do the buffing process? Thanks again and Happy New Year! 😁👍👍
is this chrome base what you would use for mr colour clear paints
I used the Alcad gloss vlack once, but I hated it because it would get sticky afterwards. How would I prevent that? I also painted it during a very hot day.
Ok I need some help. I have been noticing while using Aqua clear for a gloss coat on Alclad chrome I’m loosing about 50% of its shine. What can I be doing wrong. I can never get it as clear and shiny as you do
Can you do a review on the alclad chrome and compare aqua gloss vs klear kote overlay space I can see the difference please. I want to seal my chrome bumpers but not sure which one will keep the chrome finish.
Alclad told me to never use their Klear Kote on the chrome. Only Aqua Gloss. I will be testing Spaz Stix chrome and clear tomorrow .
Would I be able to use a bunch of these bottles to spray my black grille chrome ?
Wow! That's my hometown.👍👍
Nice, Brawn GP with the double diffuser. I remember those days.
Question, do you have anything that can take macro shots of those chrome pieces? Does it look grainy up close?
I use a Galaxy Note 10 Plus for everything. I believe I can take macro shots. I haven't tried yet. That Brawn Gundam was a labor of love for me right down to the custom decals I had to print. Hoping to start a senna Maclaren soon
@@barbatosrex9473 A Senna McLaren would be very cool. Or the JPS Lotus 98T. Black with gold pinstripes would be awesome.
Hello your video are very helpfull, but I'm not able everytime to obtain a chrome surface with alclad.... sometime works sometime not.... Today I tried to chrome two bike exhausts from aoshima and I used for base ts-14 by tamiya..... It was gloss like glass and dried 3-4 days.... tha alclad seemed to react on the black surface like thousand of micro drops..... the black surface was never touched after being painted. I had to cover the pieces with several layers af alclad so the chrome didn't turn out as good as it should have. I tried also with a cotton swab to polish the surface and this impruved the result but I noticed the paint disappeared in some spot.... so I have to airbrush another layer..... I also used green stuff chrome but it came out like alu..... Any tips? Temperature? I worked outside and today is almost cold....I'm goimng crazy..... :^)
Can you put a clear coat over the chrome?
This is it! Been doing a ton of research into chrome paints for my Warhammer minis, and this might just be the one for me. Now I just have to figure out how to apply it with an airbrush without it getting on anything else on the model...
Have you seen my video on Green Stuff World Chrome?
@@barbatosrex9473 Not yet, but I'll look into it! Alclad looks like it's better for my purposes than MIRROR paint from Culture Hustle USA looks nice and might be easier for hand brushing on, but I've been wanting an excuse to get into airbrushing anyway. I'm gonna weigh all my options before making a commitment though. Thanks for the recommendation and the great video!
Im so impressed.. holyy
Hi i wanna question, u make thiner for paint?
Thanks for the video, Have you tried to use the Klear Kote? I was curious how it would work out. Also after it dries does the shine wear off ?
Have you seen my follow up video to this? I show how to protect the chrome but you can't use the Klear Kote, you must use Alclad Aqua Gloss. Check out the vid
@@barbatosrex9473 My apologies, I just did. I had to order the Aqua from ebay because Amazon doesnt have it. Its not even listed on the Alclad site. I had a hard time finding it. I wonder if they are no longer carrying it?
