Tutorial is great! I just wish Blender (and unity, and similar free software) would stop moving everything around and changing everything. For instance, I don't have the same types in fluid as you do, so I can't even follow all the steps.
The biggest hurdle to learn Blender is not the program it self, it's that they change the user interface totally between each minor update so tutorials are obsolete quickly. I have 2.82a and there isn't much that is the same. Of course, when you know it all, you understand what everything is anyway - but when learning you just want to follow along amongst all these thousands of settings everywhere that just scares the shit out of you. I guess the best way to learn is not to have the latest version, but 2.80 which seems to be when many tutorial-makers was born.
Thank you this is the best tutorial I’ve seen yet!!! This helped me soooo much more than the tons of others I’ve watched have. Thank you, and keep up the good work!!!
Olav, I'm a long time subscriber to your channel & I really want to thank you for this tutprial. I've been trying to find a way to create splash simulations without having to use a flow controller for battle scene's in stagnant water but every tutorial I found was on either flow simulations or ripple effects using dynamic paint. I never thought to try other perameters in the fluid sims because I wouldn't know what I was doing. This video encourages me to leap out there & experiment. Thx.
I thought you were meant to do smooth shading on the water... Edit (sorry, it's very long): I set my water sub-divisions to 4 and resolution to 351 because that's 69 below 420. I got a giant 210 GB cache file so i wouldn't recommend doing it (but it's worth it because 210 is half of 420). I rendered the animation at 4K and at 60 FPS... I completely forgot to do smooth shading half way through rendering but i realised that the fluid looked extremely smooth anyway. The 960 frames which i wanted to render took veryyyyyyy long... It was the biggest animation i had ever don! Baking took like about 14 hours on a i9 and rendering about 4 days non-stop on a 2080!!! My samples were set at 2048 because on 1080p... high samples are really needed... i had no idea that 4k sucks out all the noise and horribleness at about 1024. I also wanted particles so i generated 1 which is the normal amount.. I set my end frame to 960 because i wanted to make the fluid go at half the speed but still have enough time to calm itself down around the end... i was wrong on that also! The fluid on very high resolution had wayyyyy more particles than the one on preview resolution 100. I also kept getting random bugs where my GPU would render out blank frames or the very first one occasionally. I was wondering whether or not smooth shading is compulsory even on very high resolution animations... if yes then i am completely fucked :D
I had the same issue but it only changed for them because they had baked something and the data was still in the cache folder. once you pick a location and bake it it will work.

same here the domain box doesnt change like in this video ruclips.net/video/_ECgy5hawyY/видео.html Finally got a sim but volume doesnt seem to work just shell or both, but i get a thin sheet rather than box, you dont mention if water needs to be slightly smaller than domain, or any friction settings for domain.
before baking make it sure you go to the physics tab and add: Collision to the ball and Rigid Body to the water, and select passive for the Rigid Body so it would not move. Now both can interact.

Is it doable (in terms of convenience) to do this with an animated character? Let's say you drop a character in the water and then the character moves in the water for about 10 seconds. Would the water react to the character's motions?
Another nice and straight forward tut Olav, thanks! How does one change the domain shape after baking? I changed the domain shape in edit mode (after baking/testing) but when I baked and ran again, the shape is still the original form. When I stop the sim and tab into edit mode the shape is different than what shows in the simulation. I like in the Rigid Bodies options that one can delete the bake and rebake. Is there something similar for fluids? Post testing edit - I created a similar new project using cones and surprisingly my cone shaped domain turned into a rectangleish form not really in the 3d location I intended ... very weird
Hello, thanks for tutorial, very good. I have some questions. Firstly, I do all like in the instruction but my animation don't work. After baking I haven't go so much waves and another physics. What I do wrong and how we can fix the problem?
Yes and no, it would ask for a lot of computing power since you're asking the ball to react to the water flow as well. Easier to set up but long to compute or fix should there be issues.
It is possible if I want a fluid like water, but that does not have a sphere to drop and splash, just water and that perhaps drops a few drops, it is possible, I cannot find any tutorial, since they all place a sphere.
