Yes! Met the woman of my dreams just after my t3 spinal injury. We were in college. She's an able bodied woman who happened to fall in love with a guy who uses wheels instead of legs. That was 36 years ago... been married for 33 years and we have four children (the last two are twins). I'm still a very active and outdoorsy wheelchair user and she is still in great shape and works out at the gym three or four times a week. We've had our ups and downs just like any other couple who've been married for 33 years... but we still love each other and keep rolling along!

Today is our 50th anniversary. On our 5th he was in the burn unit at Cleveland Metro. On our 10th, I was in a wheelchair. He has now been diagnosed with a series of spinal cord injuries and is in a chair. Pretty much one thing after another forever. You guys have nailed exactly how a relationship works well. He is a C4, incomplete Asia d. We are always there for each other, complete honesty and trust. Love of my life and best friend. Hang in there, you are teaching some great things.

You two are such a lovely couple ❤ Both myself and my boyfriend have chronic illnesses, but neither of us are in wheelchairs or use mobility aids. I think a lot of what you talk about is true for couple's with any medical issues. I have some systems in place to help my health and my bf has his systems too. We are long distance so don't get to see each other often, and with this coronavirus it's been at least 3 months :(
I think a useful phrase in any relationship is "is there anything I can do to help?" It lets the other person know you're there and available and puts them in charge. I think problems arise when we assume someone needs help and assume what they need doing. Asking is a better bet.
Also it sounds like Jelila (sorry I've probably spelt that wrong) understandably experienced second hand trauma from the crash. I'm proud of her for coping with it in healthy ways, and Richard how you cope with set backs and new problems is inspiring. It is telling of the work you've put in over the years to rebuild life from rock bottom.
I've heard there are 5 ways of expressing and feeling loved: physical touch, kind words, thoughtful deeds, gifts and companionship. It sounds like to me you have both figured out what the other needs which is fantastic and so important to have a healthy and strong relationship.
Much love to both of you ❤❤❤

I’m an above knee amputee and use my chair more than my prosthesis due to nerve damage and injury to my meat leg. I also have kids. My beautiful husband took us all on. My accident was 17 years ago and my amputation was 11 years ago. We met six years ago. Not only do we have a strong and loving relationship but we have had children together and he took on my other kids. Too many people assume that, because I’m disabled, our relationship can’t possibly be fulfilling for him and he must be in more or a parent type role. That is absolutely not the case. He works outside the home and I work from home. I’m the primary caregiver for the children and he steps in as soon as he gets home. I also take care of the house because I’m home. When he’s home we share all the duties. He’s an excellent husband and father and we have a very close and very “normal” relationship. My wheelchair is a part of me but it doesn’t define me.

  • @katjaanjuli

The part about not creating systems that constantly rely on your partner really struck me. I’ve only ever been in relationships with “able-bodied” men & SO many times that has happened & I’ve felt like a mother or a maid.
I do think I would feel differently if I was dating a guy who legitimately required assistance with ADLs but when its just laziness its so annoying!

Listening to you both talk about your relationship is refreshing, your honesty with each other and us viewers is awe inspiring. I am from an older generation where such openness was frowned apon if not taboo. I think if more people communicated as well as you two do then relationships would flourish and last, I have seen too many relationships flounder and die because of a misunderstanding or/and embarrassment, A lot of able bodied relationships would benefit from your experiences. I think you compliment each other in so many ways and if the truth be told your girlfriend is right when she says the wheelchair is just part and package of who you are... All relationships able bodied or otherwise should be based on mutual respect for each other and each others space. You guys are awesome together, may you have a long life together... One thing for sure your sex life will never be boring (I am almost jealous... Lol) 👍❤️

We just dealt with a wound that finally healed after a year. She helped with many things I needed taken care of that I personally couldn't do myself because I was in bed for a year. Caretaking is apart of our relationship but it's not like a mom or dad taking care of their child. She takes care of me because she loves me. Now, I am able to do many things that I couldn't do while in bed. But, its not like that at all.

Your videos are really helping me out to get use to the idea that I am going to have to have a wheelchair. In my case it is not because of injury it is because of safety. I fall way too much and the falls are getting more serious, to the point that doctors and I are worried about brain injury or spinal cord injury from the falls. I have already had major kidney damage from a major fall. The fact that I don't know when a fall will happen is what is very scary

At the local low income senior apartment were a couple who had had polio. She would drive a scooter with him in a trailer like seat. Together to the end. Slowly the polio effects came back, sort of. Years of disability took its toll on her. Married many years, their decades love was forever. Many disabled people have long love life’s and failure is not from their limitations.
I will never ever have a lover or mate. Because I am not looking for love anymore. Good luck with love.

You mentioned Bowel and Bladder stuff. When do you think it’s okay to talk about that kind of ‘awkward’ topic? I’m not dating right now, but it’s been a scary topic to me to think that I might meet someone I’m interested in and scare them away because of my weird problems. Like...
“Hey dude, I pee with a catheter FYI” 😶

Personally, I would just assume any wheelchair user would have a bladder/bowel program. But I probably have more experience with such subjects than the average Joe. And personally, I’m ok with bodily fluids and helping in such situations.

Yes they can. I am a home care nurse. I had several clients who were in a long term relationship. 1980-2020 when she died of Covid. They couldn’t get married because if they did, they would have lost 1/2 of their disability income

I was injured from a car accident at 52. Hardly seems real that it’s already been about 10 years now. I’m no longer taking any pain meds or anything for spasms. I feel blessed that those things are now minor and tolerable. I did develop blood clots about a year and a half ago, so now I do take Eliquis.
I’m curious about your journey with going vegan. How long did you do that? Never did I realize I’d be going poop so much. I guess that’s why I’m a Flexitarian... Standard American Diet 20% / vegan 80%. Hence the term, Flexitarian. That diet does not affect my bowels in the same way. I already have to cath 5 times a day. I didn’t want to deal with added bowel movements too. 😂🤣

You mentioned your pain in the video, can you do one that goes into more detail about your pain. Based on my disability, my partner needs to do the majority of things around the house & when we leave the house. I try to be as independent as I possibly can, but not even close to how you are.

Hi. I have a question. I want to buy Kuschall K series 2.0 Right now i have quickie wheelchair. My seat depth on quickie is about 44cm,and mu knees are in front of the frame..and I want on Kuschall to be longer seat depth 47,5cm. My question is,if I make my seat depth longer on Kuschall, will frame be in front of my knees automatically,or I have to choose also longer frame for about 5cm? I want a longer seat depth, but I also want frame to be in front of my knees-legs.. I have the same problem as you do,when you went to manually adjust your chair..Thank you in advance 🙂

Wow ! Thank you ! nice to see open talk about this. 42 years of sci, with the last ten completely single, got me thinking I may stay that way forever. Realizing I just have mostly non negotiable "systems" that well work for me, helped me think about possibly "integrating" again. So the one trick here is finding a person thats a better person than yourself. But its damn hard though....i personally never want to discuss the deets of my struggles because i feel i dont need to trouble my partner at the time with any issues that a normal relationship with a normal person would not have. Perhaps its all about finding the right person who you can open up to...
