Parrot OS Security Install and Dual Boot with Windows 10 | Step by Step Guide

- Parrot OS Security Install (UEFI) and How to Dual Boot with Windows 10 this is a Step by Step Guide/Tutorial that will show you how to install Parrot OS and Dual Boot it with Windows 10. This is intended for users who need a guide/tutorial to follow that's in depth. There are many steps to this, but if done right you can have Parrot OS and Windows 10 both on the same system. You simply get a choice at the beginning of boot in the GRUB menu to chose between which one you want to launch.
Parrot OS 4.9 is a distribution based off the testing version of Debian that focuses on security, privacy, and creating an easy to deploy development environment for the end user. There's plenty of tools to use if you choose to do so and the Security version includes tools for pen testing, forensics, engineering, hacking, and privacy. Making it a great distribution for more advanced users who need advanced tools that can help in the becoming a member of the cyber security community. It's a great alternative to Kali Linux if you're looking for a change and comes highly recommended by security users, as well as, developers and it's gaining in popularity.
Since Parrot OS 4.9 takes a while to install and there’s plenty of chances to mess up I suggest you get comfortable by doing the install on a virtual machine before moving onto another system. It will help you better understand where you went wrong in your install and easily start over.

Thank you so much for this video. As a new user to the Linux community, I realized there a few steps I made incorrectly but decided that after 1 failed attempt, I would watch the video and refer to the online manuals. Since I have a Thinkpad P1 Gen 2, I had no idea there were so many known issues with the NVIDIA graphics card. I loaded at startup without the NVIDIA and it all works perfectly. Do you have a video comparing the features/.differences between Parrot and Kali? Curious to understand your take (or whomever you find is not too biased of a comparison review). I am def a subscriber now!
Sandy, no problem! Welcome to Linux and glad to have you as a subscriber!! I don't have a video per se comparing the two side by side, but I do have review videos for both where I explore their unique environments.
Kali - ruclips.net/video/zQ6jC2lHNGg/видео.html
Parrot - ruclips.net/video/zEsJk61JZpo/видео.html
When it comes to the foundation (base) level between the two distributions.. they are practically the same. They are both based off Debian and offer many (if not all) the same security tools. If something is missing you can always install it post. The main difference is how the desktop environments are arranged/laid out. All of the same packages, tools, and updates will be available in both since they are based on the Debian (testing) branch. When it boils down to it the reason to pick one over another is really based on which layout you like personally. That's why I suggest watching the videos above. See what you would be more comfortable using and pick one.
In my personal opinion/experience I like Parrot OS better. I simply like the environment more, although, I do use some of the guides/docs from Kali from time to time in order to understand some of the available tools. Hopefully this helps you out, again, thanks for joining the community!

Im A Newbie To Linux World & I Tried To Triple Boot Windows 10 & Ubuntu Studio & Lastly Parrot Os & Two Times It Troubled Me & Third Time I Was Succesful In Installing & I Used To Get Lots Of Grub Errors, Minimal Bash Errors & I Used To Get Installation Failed In Live Booting In Parrot Os & In This Video You Just Selected A Parition & Directly Replaced The Partition Fully & Being A RUclipsr You Must Always Teach The Hard Way Not Easy Way Of Doing Things Bcoz The Ground Reality Will Be Different Means What You Teach Here Might Had Worked Perfectly For You But When We Try To Do The Same Thing We Encounter Many Installation Errors Related To Grub & Boot Errors & You Have To Teach The Manual Partitioning & Clear All Micellaneous Doubts A Newbie May Get & I Got Efi Boot Partition Error Once & I Got Failed To Write To Harddisk Error In Manjaaro Os Once In This Way Thier Wil Be Hell Of Errors While Installation Its Not Easy As You Shown In This Video & I Was Totally Confused & After Many Failures Now I Learnt It Myself Now I Figured The Right Way Myself... Teach How To Avoid Common Errors One May Encounter At The Time Of Installations.. Thanks
@Donnie Darshan - I understand your frustrations that's why at the very beginning I start by saying that this isn't an easy process and that it needs to be attempted on a system other than the one you plan on using at the end of things. Since there's always a possibility you'll run into errors. This is a general outline for people to follow for Dual Booting, not triple booting or any other combination so idk why you would assume it would just work the way shown for triple boot. Of course, there's going to be times where people run into issues, but with a fresh install of windows and parrot this will work fine for people. Of course, you can get hardware errors, but who's going to be able to work around all those scenarios. I don't know how you can say it's "the hard way". That makes no sense to me. Wouldn't manually partitioning something that you don't understand be harder than a graphical selection and something that you can clearly see for beginners? I'm sorry but I'm not following that thought process. Thanks for the feedback either way. I'll look into possibly showing manually partitioning in the future.
This video is great, I'm a Linux novice, and I have a question is is it ok to install on a different disk?C in the video could it be on D or some other disk?
@H4xx0rz Jackey - Thanks for the kind remark!
It can be on whatever disk you would like. Just make sure it has unallocated space and you don't overwrite anything that may exist on the disk already. Stick to the unallocated space portions. If the disk has absolutely nothing on it you can choose to erase and install only parrot on it. Then through bios you can toggle between which disk you want to launch. Hey my friend
I have two questions, when you do the installation, in a system without windows, the partitions phase asks you to define 3 spaces, swap, root and home,In the video it is not seen that you do that?; the other question is how do you start Linux Parrot, without disabling Secure Boot, at least not seen in the video.
Thanks in advance
@Grover Núñez del Pino.
- Great questions. First off you don't necessarily need swap if you have plenty of physical memory that's why I didn't create another partition with swap. You can of course create it if you want. I thought I mentioned that in the vid. You need to disable secure boot otherwise the system will try and boot Windows instead. Not sure of a way around that.
@@SavvyNik Thanks for your answer, of many videos that I have seen, with instructions to install distros, the cleanest about patches (windows) is yours, I suggest you expand it and correct the details, emphasize having two systems on a Laptop or PC, in a short time the patches will be native Linux, at least I think so, they may last 10 years, good luck and Congratulations!
@@revorg23 Thanks for the kind remarks. I'm not sure what you mean about by having two systems and/or patches? Maybe you are referring to virtualization or perhaps WSL on Windows containing native Linux platforms?
@@SavvyNik I call Windows Patches, for many reasons, but it is still a good system.
When I say two systems, I mean to have Windows and a Linux distro on the same machine, (dual boot) so the users are learning and losing their fear.

Hey SavvyNik! First time watching one of your videos. I've installed parrot as a dual boot a few years ago (4.18 I believe) and I didn't have any issues. But this time I have encountered something weird. I have tried flashing with both rufus and balena, and I have tried both live mode and the mode for Nvidia gpus (The laptop I am attempting to install this on has an Nvidia card in it). Anyways, I get all the way through the install process, except it doesn't tell me to remove the boot drive, the pc restarts to the grub menu, I choose parrot and then after a while of sitting on the terminal login page ( the one that flashes right before you actually login) my pc shuts down and the next time I turn it on i get an error that says device not found. Any ideas? Please let me know if you need any additional info to help me out with this issue.
@Justin Eckert - Welcome to the channel and thanks for posting! Sounds like the drivers for the Nvidia graphics weren't installed properly if I had to guess. I assume you did end up shutting down the computer and removing the install media anything so you can actually boot into the newly installed system? If so I think you might have to follow this guide for installing Nvidia graphics drivers: docs.parrotlinux.org/info/gpu-drivers/ also you will more than likely have to set nouveau.modeset=0 inside of the grub configuration. This will at least tell you if it's graphics related and should let you boot into the system with a failsafe for the graphics. Here's another link: askubuntu.com/questions/747314/is-nomodeset-still-required let me know where you get with it.

It will work you will just have to install the nvidia proprietary drivers to get things to render properly.
Please can you make a video on how i can join parrot OS to Windows Domain(AD)
is it safe for the partition, and the distro, and windows have parrot and windows in the same hard drive? or is safest use a live usb. i mean, to have the security from prevent damage from windows viruses to the parrot files?
Not sure, but I'd imagine the safest way to keep two operating systems from each malicious software going between them would keeping them on separate disks and only having one powered up at a time.
@@SavvyNik and how i have one powered up at a time? disconecting the otherone?
@@LuisSOfficial If you had two separate storage disks in your computer and you only used one at a time I'd imagine something like might work. Technically only one is on/booted and powered at a time. That would allow you to switch easily as well.

@@SavvyNik
Only thing that seems odd is when grub says it hasn't found any other os installed. Clearly something's a miss coz I have windows 10, right?
@@rickm1427 - Yes, exactly.. for some reason grub isn't picking up on Windows. Seems strange. Do you have an EFI partition? What you could probably do is use the live image to logon mount your root directory and then install os-prober mount the efi partition and rerun the grub-mkconfig command and you should see it detect the Windows side of things. Or your could restart the installer. While you are going through when it gets to the what do you want to do with your partitions portion you should see the option for "install alongside" if you don't I assume there's something wrong and the installer cannot detect windows.

Why would we want nomodeset?? Something about having a NVIDIA card
If you have an Nvidia Graphics card you'll need proprietary drivers in order to render graphics properly. You can use nomodeset to initially help render the graphics for the driver install process. Some distros install these drivers for you if you go through a special install process. If you don't have Nvidia Graphics then more than likely drivers are preinstalled.

In bootloader option when I select my pendrive, its shows "Security Boot Fail"
Maybe you need to turn off secure boot in your BIOs.
Hi I get a black screen after clicking live installer
Bro after selecting replace a partition... instead of "the efi system partition ...." it gives me three option for boot loader location(after selecting free partition):
1)master boot record of drive name (/dev/sda).
2)system partition (/).
3)do not install a boot loader.
What to select ?... and also at the left side of select storage device there is BIOS instead of EFI written....
That's because you have a MBR based bios and not EFI. This install shows EFI. I assume you have Windows on this system so what does the partition layout look for that side of things? Does /dev/sda belong to Windows or that's being created by Linux?
Yep i have windows 10 and i think /dev/sda belongs to windows because in select storage device only 1 option is available that is
ST3500413AS - 465.8 GiB (dev/sda).
The layout of partitions:
1) Windows 10 - 500 MiB(NTFS)
2)sda2 - 169.5 GiB (NTFS)
3)sda3 - 100 GiB (NTFS)
4)sda4 - 147.9 GiB (NTFS)
5)free space - 47.9 GiB
In short it must be efi and not bios?
@@SAMTech734 No, it doesn't matter what BIOs you have it's just a small difference in how the partitions are setup and what gets installed. You should be able to just select the main /dev/sda option and be able to install the grub bootloader there and it should be able to boot into both systems. If I install this parrot security ..is there any chances to lose my data...
There's always the chance when you are installing an operating system, especially, missing a step while it's your first attempt. Always backup your data regardless.

How to dual boot parrot and manjaro os?
I'll just try changing my bios from Legacy to UEFI if I can.
Sounds good. Good luck. Just remember you'll have to reinstall your Windows so it uses EFI as well.
@@SavvyNik Thanks man 💯
While installing the ParrotSec OS by just restarting and plugging in the live medium , the system asks for a root password( password to be entered in the sudo command ) other than the user password. But you haven't entered a different password , Why ?
If you are using the live medium to do tasks they have a default root user.. I believe since 4.4 the default root user has no password, but the default normal user does the password is: toor

Pretty much. You might be need to enable certain repos in order to get everything.
During the install I'm getting a phyton boost error and the installation failed. What should I do??
How much space are you trying to install this on?
@@SavvyNik I'm giving it about 50gb
@@rahulvishwakarma2897 should be ok.. maybe you have a corrupt image/usb. I would try reflashing my USB with rufus using DD mode for writing.
@@SavvyNik ok will sure do

What if we wanna uninstall it?
Bro how much gb is enough for parrot distribution
Typically 4GB+ memory or 32GB+ storage (although you won't have much room to install things). I personally like to do 64GB+ w/ storage.
