8:01 the vista installation detected ntldr (the boot loader 2000 and xp use), but starting with vista windows uses bootmgr and i think it just places bootmgr (the newer windows boot loader) on the partition with the existing installations, and bootmgr allows you to go to ntldr under "earlier version of windows"
19:29 the MBR partition scheme only supports 4 primary partitions, and you've used all of them up by this point, though you could've made the 4th one an extended partition with multiple logical drives and potentially install other versions of windows but i'm not sure how well that would work, if at all
MBR only supports 4 primary partitions... Therefore, just add more HDD's!

128 partitions on UEFI GPT that mean 128 oses
Why did Windows 2000 stop working?
My experience with Windows ended at Win98. I used XP for a short time to test it out, but I don't really count that because it was just a couple of months and since then I've been Linux only. I've never tried to dual boot multiple Windows' versions, so I didn't even know it was possible, but you can make your life a whole lot easier by just using a good OS instead.

This tutorial is not fully correct. Since it's MBR you can only boot 4 versions (because the maximum number of partitions allowed is 4) but you could use GPT and with that you can boot up to 256 different OS (the maximum number would be much more, but Windows only supports up to 256 partitions). The disadvantage is that only Windows Vista (or 7) or greater support this, and requires a UEFI BIOS. GPT (GUID partition table) has a big advantage: you don't need to have active partitions: every partition is bootable. Some years ago I tried this and I could boot 10 different OS with no problems. (As I said I could have done much better, but I think it's still a great result).

19:16 A MBR disk can contain a maximum of 4 primary partitions.
With 3rd party apps, you can make more "logical" partitions, which means you can dual boot more oses
@@GalacticGamerrYTSadly Windows usually only supports booting off of a primary partition.
@@hallohallo926 well for me I can boot off of logical partitions. I have a mbr hard drive with a legacy bios
@@hallohallo926I'm not 100% certain, but I think it's just bootmgr that has to be on a primary partition (in other words the part that brings up the screen asking what OS you want to boot) while the OS itself can be on a logical partition
This was really nice! I kinda want to do a triple boot of Windows XP, 7 and 10 on a X58 motherboard and i7-920 that I managed to pick up recently.
Out of interest, what specs are the machine used for this test? I reckon Windows 7 was probably the best OS for your machine, with Windows XP not being too bad either if you installed all of the drivers.

@@JigaTech sure go for it
Maybe at some day you have to revisit the 5 counts
- Vista and above boot fine from extended partitions
- Windows 8 and above can boot from a VHD file stored on a NTFS partition, as long as the free space on the NTFS partition is more than the maximum allowed grow size of the VHD. It can even install directly to a VHD file if during setup you open cmd window and mount one with DISKPART. (I used this sometimes to install another Windows version on a machine without repartitioning to test driver support).
- I believe Windows 2000 can also dual-boot with DOS; and from DOS you can start Windows 1.0 to Windows ME all installed on a single FAT partition.
- If you start with Windows 8 (or 7 unofficially) you can install in UEFI mode on GPT Partition which has no limit of primary or extended partitions (other than free disk space)
You can do 1.0-95 on 1 partition but 9x does not like it if you install multiple versions of 9x on 1 partition
5:54 Windows XP
Man I really wanted to do this, but my laptop (my only computer) is legacy bios so i can't do more than 4 partitions
Edit: WAIT WHAT YOU CAN FIT MUTIPLES OS' ON ONE PARTITION HUH WHAT
Edit 2: nvm?
you can have more than 4 partitions if you make 3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition with an infinite number of logical drives.
is it safe because i want to install ubuntu without getting errors in my windows 10
You technically can for older versions of windows that don’t use image based deployment. What I’m saying is that you can make an extended partition that looks like a primary partition, but you can put any number of logical partitions inside that extended partition.

It's not necessarily dual booting as you have 4 OSes shown on the w10 install screen but that's a lot of time for an experiment. I wonder if with extended partitions you could have windows 95 to windows 10!
I once tried doing that but I was insane and actually started with MS-DOS and Windows 3.x, 9x and NT 3.x. that didn't go well. Windows 2000 installer straight up told me that I won't be able to boot OSes earlier than NT 4 because they are no longer supported.
Or something like that. I might have mixed up some details.

There's a simple answer to how many Windows versions you can dualboot, it's 2. Dual boot means "two boot" so the maximum is 2 and the minimum is 2.
seems like someone didn't watch the video. towards the end, they hit 4 maximum partitions (basically 4 operating systems).

only 2, cause otherwise you're triple, quadruple booting it
Wouldn't it just be multi-boot at that ppint?
Dual is double/two.
At most you can "dual" boot two OS's and that's it.
none... you can only boot 1 version of Window at a time... and if you want to have multiple OS'es installed, well DUAL-booting allows only 2, because that is what DUAL means...
It is kind-of correct to say that Vista and Windows 7 are the same OS, given that Windows 7 is actually Windows 6.1.
If you have a UEFI Enabled system use GPT to have 128 partitions in Windows
i think 5 m dotts
19:15 The reason why the Windows 10 installer said "You have the maximum number of partitions is because for GPT Disks you can have up to 128 partitions and for MBR Disks you can have only 4 partitions.
To convert from MBR to GPT you can use third party apps like MiniTool Partition Wizard which has support from Windows XP to Windows 11 whether its 32 or 64 bit. Or, you could use AOMEI Partition Assistant which has support for Windows 7 to Windows 11. And also when installing MiniTool, DO NOT CHOOSE THE PRO TRIAL because when you try to do something it will not let you do it until you buy the pro version. If you choose the pro trial dont worry, this can be fixed by reinstalling MiniTool

You can install up to 128 operating systems on a UEFI system with a GPT disk, as GPT supports up to 128 partitions by default. However, managing that many OS installations can be complex due to boot management and system resource demands. Most users find it practical to dual boot two or three OSes.

How many Ubuntu (LTS-ONLY) could you boot?
This is what I had in mind on my Netbook a couple years ago, it runs terrible so Windows 8.1 suits it better, though some of my software needs Windows 10, and to keep up with the new OS, I use Windows 11, and to see what it originally look and feel, I installed Windows 7 (I also tried Windows XP and Vista but I can’t get them to install properly)
good work, but i would recomend you install evry windows version on separate partition , and have backup or restore point when you go to f8 safe mode for them if you can boot, installing new versions the more you do the more there is possibiloty that old ones with older boot managers give you error screen like of windows 2000, and the thing is that you need to have at least as well either more older ones which is compatible with like 2000 and xp , when windows vista and 7 and 8 and 8.1 and windows 10 you install and 11 , you will not have lost them they are new win nt versions they could maybe sometimes just deactivate version but not ruin ability for use and you just reactivate you can from vista to 10 use with reactivating and it is always then and always no matter if older or new versions you install to all always put on separate pertitions. and if you want to use longer use ssd dist and not hdd , ssd last longer with several partitions with in evry you install windows operating systems, the more you have the more slows your computer or laptop down, and the best thing is that you have backup of data and on external sources you put data so it will work faster when you have several windows operating systems slows it down the advice i tell you better then store your data not to work extremly slow store data on usb or cd and dvd and floppy or whatever external data storage things you have , put there music and movies or pictures or business data or whatever that is important to you on external for both faster use of computer and for security reasons because if you install on hdd and not on ssd then it lasts not as long as ssd disk which is better then hard drive.
12:19 i noticed that
You can make more than 4 partitions on MBR partitions but you will need a special application for that.
you can't dual boot on one partition with the newer versions of windows because all of their files is the same name so it won't work
like everyone said mbr drives can't have more than 4 partitions idk about gpt but ik it can have a lot and you can't use gpt because old versions of windows don't support gpt drives so you need more drives to continue

Use VMware 16 pro by using ISO image
Here's how you could've also added Windows 10: you can use some tools like AOMEI wizard which will allow you create more partitions and will work just fine.
That really depends on the computer's hardware (storage and memory are the two main factors taken into account).

When I tried to install Windows XP Professional on my first computer it took forever to format the disk.
Use diskpart to clean your drives if you get stuck or you see Windows can't be installed on a GPT format only MBR is for all operating systems. You can Google this information if you need. Good luck oh really recommend a 20TB drive for everything that's your best bet which I will update mine to soon.
Crappy hardrives fault
Replace the drive's I have added XP recently installing it through the same way a tech would from the boot menu. Since its an older Os it works great. Remember to get the driver pack DVD to activate your services like internet. I have now XP-11 and Linux except I'd recommend a larger HDD for installation of all operating systems. XP software uses basic CD-R discs to burn programs too and the other OS use DVD-R discs to burn software to. Good luck my friend. P.s. what I did for all six OS was just what I'm leaving you here. Just remember to boot from the boot menu and select wherever your CD-ROM ls listed. If you have issues use diskpart to clean all your drives via list disk then select disk 0 or 1 and 2 etc.
Then type clean all to start over.

Vista only complained because you didnt have graphics drivers, the default generic display driver has no idea how much vram your gpu has, so it assumes the worst case scenario, 1MB of vram
And vista didnt have compatibility issues, it was just the first version of windows in a while to have a rela increase in system requirements, and a bunch of people ignored those requirements and installed it on their crappy old pentium 2s and 486s and then complained it ran like shit
