  • #Retroid's latest handheld is a kickback to the clamshells of yester-year. Going clamshell enables really compact designs but also huge limitations for hardware. Without updating the internals from the Retroid Pocket 3+, was Retroid able to strike a good balance between the two?

    Important Note
    I feel it should go without saying, but this product isn't aimed at anyone who bought the Retroid Pocket 3+. If you did, there's really no benefit to buying both. You should really wait for a Retroid Pocket 4+ before upgrading (if the performance is actually increased).

    I ordered one as my first emulation device. I had a vague interest in emulation before, and I tried using a gamesir x2 pro along with my phone but wasnt feeling it. But when i saw the flip, i knew i had to give a dedicated handheld a shot, love that clamshell design.
    Still waiting for it to ship out, so i appreciate the review in the meantime!

      I’ve also tried using my phone, and it just doesn’t do it for me - but I’ve enjoyed my modded 3DS I recently got. Clamshell is great, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it

    Nice video mate. I'll sub but you might consider the camera angle, move it slightly higher to see you better. Nice video. I love handheld content. Good luck growing the channel.

      I’m leaning towards to Flip because I travel a lot for work and it would be easier to just toss it in my bag when I leave.

    i've picked one up from aliexpress and i think if you look at it as a mid tier portable emulator that can handle alot of classic 3d games you are going to be happy, what you get is portability and power working well together, if i wanted more high end games to run i would be wanting a bigger screen and something i can play for longer periods, if im on the bus or have downtime in the day im reaching for this or a jailbroken 3ds xl/vita

    The RG353M does not have similar performance, it´s the RG505 that has the same internals.

    • @GameXData
      @GameXData  Год назад

      Same internals aren't necessary for similar performance. Reviews say point to the RG353M being able to run up to PS1, PSP, N64, and Dreamcast, which essentially what the Flip can do comfortably.
      Choosing the RG505 instead would be fine as well. Although, I've seen less favorable reviews overall comparatively. I also personally just really like the RG353M's all metal chassis.

    The retroid pocket 3+ and flip both come with a fork of Dolphin MMJR built in called Dolphin for Handheld… it integrates with Daijisho and the retroid front end just fine.

    • @GameXData
      @GameXData  Год назад

      Except, not really? Only stock apps (like Clock and FM Radio) are preinstalled. There's an option to download Dolphin for Handheld during initial setup. However, trying to redownload it after the fact, through their standalone app setup, redirects to a broken link to the Play Store. If I have to jump through hoops to get a function working, I can't recommend it. That's especially the case, since Gamecube emulation still feels fairly inconsistent on the Flip regardless of the app.
      As for the frontend issues, of course Daijisho works, but that's not really the focus of the video. Installing apps through other sources completely breaks the ability to launch an app from the Retroid frontend. With a bit of tinkering, I'm positive I could get it working again, but it's a real annoyance that makes me not want to use their frontend in the first place.

    • @RedNocturne
      @RedNocturne Год назад

      @@GameXData Oh snap, I didn't realize that the download isn't working anymore during setup. Well that's annoying! They should get that fixed - it worked at the time that I got my 3+.

    • @GameXData
      @GameXData  Год назад

      @Red Nocturne Yeah...it's a huge pain, tbh. When I first noticed Gamecube games not running well, I tried to download Dolphin for Handheld (which I didn't know was necessary during initial setup), and it just did not want to work at all. The only solution I've found is to actually restart the Set Up Wizard (which is buried under multiple layers of Settings) to get it redownloaded. It's not that great of a user experience and something I imagine most folks (including myself) would miss altogether.

    Hello. Can we talk about the Anbernic RG405V for a sec??? How you are with clam shell machines is exactly the way i am with vertical machines. If you can get one id love to see you do a substantial review on the machine. If not that's cool.

      I've added it to my list of handhelds to look into. If the channel budget doesn't allow for it right now, I might wait for Anbernic's (inevitable) next vertical handheld.

    I would love to buy this but i have no clue how to load games and do firmware updates and tinker with various emulators. I dont own my own PC so i dont mess with any of that. This is why ive always stuck to consoles, i dont have to worry about any of that any games and consoles update themselves. I do have an Ambernic handheld but i just play the library of games that games already loaded on it.

    • @GameXData
      @GameXData  Год назад

      The setup process is actually a lot easier than you'd think. For the Flip in particular, there was a setup script that asked which emulators I wanted to install and most of them worked fine out of the box. Likewise, settings in emulators typically boil down to mapping controls in an input menu, changing the resolution scaling in a graphics menu, and telling the program where to look for your games. If guides are more your style, Retro Game Corps has some really in-depth material that might help: retrogamecorps.com/2022/03/13/android-emulation-starter-guide/
      As for the games themselves, I might recommend checking out the r/Roms subreddit. On their home page they have some really solid info to guide you to where you'd need to go.

    It would be neat if Retroid would do a duel screen version. Imagine perfect DS, 3DS and maybe even Wii U emulation on a duel screen device.

    • @GameXData
      @GameXData  6 месяцев назад

      If you're looking for a dual screen handheld for DS and 3DS emulation, the Surface Duo already exists. As for Wii U emulation, you'd probably be best off strapping a screen to a Steam Deck considering no Wii U emulator exists for Android right now.

    Nice video. Basically the same as what I want it for, I have a Steam Deck, but want something small for maximum portability and just to sling in a case/bag for retro stuff, I have an RG503 but I am a sucker for the clamshell design having had all of Nintendo's in the past. Plus it's a "Slight" upgrade from the 503 chip wise.

    Imo, they should make a higher end model with an 8g2 and sell it for around 350 to 500 and add a DeX-like desktop feature, and dual boot to Windows.

      I could see something like a G3X Gen 1 fitting nicely into a handheld like this. Although, I think any price increase above $200 might need to come with some extra investment to build quality. The Flip's nice for what it is, but the display and buttons would be harder to stomach for something closer in price to a Steam Deck or Razer Edge.

    the flip is great but I will simply say this if you order from this company keep in mind if you aren't buying more then 2-3 devices and or a youtubers you wont get a shipping notification for about a month after you order from them they had a launch day for April 10th and didn't start making the devices until the launch day so they still have a bunch of backlog orders that still aren't filled and when you try to contact support or even go on the discord and ask about shipping you will be banned from the discord and or you will be muted and or you will have your order canceled and refunded this company is great for flagship devices and I love the company but when it comes to openness and transparency with shipping the devices you pay close to $200 for they fail to inform you about shipping information and or keep telling you that you're order will ship in 2 weeks which I have been told multiple times and I still haven't had my ordered shipped and I placed my order on April 4th its been over a month just be warn if you order from them expect you wont get the device for idk over a month at least or longer and I am not the only one who had this issue I do hope they improve shipping and more communication about how they prepare launch days and what they do behind the scenes also would like to say if you try to go on the discord the lovely SOB Chris Nathan will ban you if you ask about your order being shipped and or if you ask for updates about what's going on with shipping you will get laughed at and told to shut up and wait like the others from the lovely boot lickers
