- For the last few years I have been looking around for a backwards compatible first generation PS3 system to replace my old one that finally gave out. I decided to pick one up from eBay to see how it would turn out. Today we'll be taking a look at the 20GB launch model PS3 that has the Emotion Engine chip for full backwards compatibility.

"PS3 is almost 14 years old"
In my head it's still "Next-Gen". I feel so old...
Niall Crallan lol I feel you. Going from my composite GameCube to the first hd generation was wild. I don’t think we’ll ever experience a leap like that again
@@alistair4909 Ever since the early HD generation, the newer consoles were just average. Hopefully the newer consoles will finally introduce something to the industry.
In my head, it's kind of current gen. It really feels more powerful than it is.
It'll always be next gen to me
their CPU was fuckin fire back in a day, so powerful...they had to disable extra cores...talk bout power
Still have my 80GB model. Works great. Has more fingerprints than the FBI Database, but that’s a small price to pay to play a library only Sony’s machine could offer.
This model never had full (PS2) backwards compatibility (emulated) and after an update has none, right?
Steve Erikson ah, u might be right about that. It’s been too long to remember, but in any case it definitely did play ps2 games. I never had an issue either.
get a pc bud.
Steve Erikson - 80gb still has PS2 b/c I just played some DQ8 on mine
Oh wait you mean hardware update, not that they patched it out lol. The 80 GBs with 4 USB ports on the front play PS2 games.

Exactly. Thumbs down for click bait title. It implied that they sent him sth else with the title. There was no reason to write "this is what they sent me" unless it was sth else.
"I bought an original PS3 ... and this is what they sent me." No way?! You're telling me they sent you an original PS3, exactly what your ordered. I can't believe my eyes.
@Mussell Bestbrook No. It was a clickbait. Let's be honest. :)
A friend of mine bought a PS2 memory card on ebay and they sent him 2 PS1 memory cards, i am not even making this stuff up.
Piers Awramenko - the Sarcasta-ometer just went off the scale 😂
@@Mundus66 LOLZ!!!
Arctic Wolf How is it clickbait? He literally shows what they sent him, just like the title says.
I still remember when the PS3 came out, you couldn't go anywhere online without someone saying "PS3 HAS NO GAEMS" or calling it a glorified movie player. Including that Bluray player really helped them move units though. Even though the PS3 was stupid expensive, it was _still_ cheaper than most standalone Bluray players. A lot of people bought it just to be able to play their shiny new HD movies.
The lack of games was true though. I bought mine on launch day and really had nothing to play on it for a year. Things definitely improved and I still have the machine now.
@@Th3OmegaPoint Meh.... There were DEF games. Cod 4 literally came out not much later
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe when they launched a PlayStation 3 was the cheapest Blu-ray player you can buy
it was
Correct and gaming started to die out thanks to introduction of paywalls and shitty unfinished games on day one. Still far better and reliable then the shitbox360. Sony said it didn't sell well enough yet it outsold everything else on the market. Fuck their logic.

The ps5 better be backwards compatible. That’s literally all I care about for a new console other than improved power
EDIT: WELL THEN... it was expected anyways
Hasn't it been confirmed like six times over that it is?
@@DeltathRiylaan only for the PS4. They have not confirmed anything further back than that.
The fact we still know little about the PS5 beyond basics has me suspicious that it may not have the all system backwards compatibility that everyone wants.
I'd be happy with 1,2 and 4, technically, but that's not very exciting and I wouldn't bother buying in the first year or two. Figure out how to make PS3 work on it as well and I'd be a day 1 buyer, no question. Zero interest in both PSNow and re-buying games I already own on a marketplace, it's gotta work with old discs and previous digital purchases too.
I'm almost definitely setting myself up for disappointment, prove me wrong, Sony.
Why do you wanna play old games ?
Since you're planning on keeping this around mostly for PS2 games I'd definitely recommend you jailbreak it just for access to fan control. I personally set my fan to dynamically cool and keep the system from going higher than 65 C. With the way the PS2's emulator works, you don't have that same level of control but you can set your console to automatically bump the fan up to a certain % when booting a PS2 game.
Plus a big bonus of course is you'll be able to play whatever PS2 games you want from the internal HDD.
MrMario2011 here with the facts

Yes, but is it the grill?

Few things that came to my mind:
-I think it just boils down to keeping it clean and cool, those capacitors will die no matter what. Delid it and replace that crusty thermal paste.
-Oiling the fan bearing helps with the noise that may occur, my 80GB made horrible (literally) "niuuiuiuiu" sound..
-Be sure to replace those NEC/TOKIN capacitors and heck yeah get the newer model PSU that is APS-xxx (black plastic casing ones).
@AleksSDF xacto knife or anything whit a long sharp edge and alot of precision. very easy to messup wouldnt recomend it if you have no idea what you are doing
@AleksSDF Painting blade is actually pretty safe tool when compared to that suggested X-acto knife. The adhesive is strong as hell to begin with. Whole operation took like 3 hours to do, 80% of that went to sliding that blade around
@AleksSDF be careful :)
Still got my backwards compatible PS3 and still works to this day
My RSX Temperatures on my PS3 are higher than the CPU, which can only mean one thing. The RSX proccesser needs more thermal paste?
So true about the wrestling games. How they haven't gone back to that old style is a god dang mystery to me.
I would like to see a ps3 with liquid metal instead of thermal paste that would be very cool to see if it works or not.
Yh lol
Why wouldn't it work
It's just different thermal interface
It would run a few degrees cooler and that's pretty much it
There's no reason it wouldn't. There's no reason to own a ps3 for that matter.
That would be cool to see tho, the ps3 is my first console that I ever had that had the red light of death not yellow thankfully and it's all original except for miner upgrades.
It works, I just serviced my 2007 80GB model last year. The 2 major upgrades I did were a 2TB SSD and Thermal Grizzly liquid metal. Runs cool as hell
Man this really took me back to the Yellow Light Of Death times. :') My friends giving me their "broken" consoles and me fixing them without them knowing it wasn't scrap. good times good times lol
Scamming the boys 😓
Currently doing an attempted fix of my launch 60GB PS3. It got YLOD back in 2010 or 2011 and I'm replacing the NEC Tokin capacitors after never trying to fix it before due to not liking the idea of reflow/reball.
I'm awaiting some parts and it's definitely *not* an easy system to work on but hopefully I get my beloved behemoth back soon. We'll see as this fix has been done before.
UPDATE:
The rona stuff made it difficult to order the parts needed but they'll now be here in a week! I'll update on any progress!
DannyWilliamH I’m thinking about looking into doing the same with my launch 60GB
DannyWilliamH Doing a cap replacement is the best thing you can do for it. Hopefully you get it up and running again!
Just buy a PS3 slim or ultra slim. It's cheaper. Lasts longer too
Paid $50 to get my YLOD 60 GB repaired. Then the GPU failed. It’s in the attic along with my PS1 (which still works).

I already have a slim (not super slim). Grabbed it within a week of my launch 60GB getting YLOD. Modded and all.
I just want my 60GB baby back lol
Cheers Spawn. Got an A01 recently (pretty rare here in Aus) and did a repaste last night. Your advice with the paste amounts and BR ribbon cable were much appreciated.
How much money should I be looking at for a good deal on the A01?
Did you CFW the console to play our PAL games? Or do you have some NTSCs around.
This is also why emulation is so important. These more modern consoles just don't have the longevity of the old cartridge based ones without moving parts.
No kidding. I still have the NES and SNES units that my dad bought us secondhand when we were little kids (already quite well-loved by previous owners at that point). Both still work, as does the N64. Nothing else has proved half as durable since then.
Good thing all Nintendo and Playstation consoles are emulation capable with almost all games being playable upscalled today. Except the PS4... and the Vita which is still on its very early days but should see progress soon. I hope to see more progress on the Xbox side though for CXBX-R and Xenia. As for the games, the internet has definitely preserved them.
I think companies should always have 2 launch models each generation. One as the standard version, directed towards more casual players. And then the premium console with full backwards compatibility capable of reading cartridges, CDs, DVDs, basically for collectors or people who also still want to play older games. Otherwise we have to rely on PC emulation which to be fair, has not disappointed either.
Well that and people just want to steal games and not have to pay for them - which is the number 1 use of "emulation"...
Facts. I concur. That's what I would be looking forward to
That's because modern console use moving parts. That's always the first thing to go on most recent consoles. I've already replaced 2 Wii disc drives, but so far that's the only issue I've had with Wiis.
And yes, emulation is important, but I'm certain we'll still have working retro consoles within our lifetime. As long as ppl can repair/replace parts and clone consoles get manufacturered. They aren't going away anytime soon like some ppl make it sound like.
So did I two years ago, and fingers crop it's still going strong and is my most used console.
Don't crop my fingers

I must've gotten lucky as hell with my 60GB launch PS3 that I bought all the way back on launch day as I have not had a single problem with it. Never been opened, never needed any repair of any kind and has worked flawlessly since day one.
Same, but mine needs a new case
This is exactly what I've been looking for. Been wanting the backwards compatibility to play PS2 games. Thanks for doing this.
Loving the new setup, After watching the tour of the office I'm very pleased with how the new setup looks and it's pretty fresh!
The PS3 Super Slim was my first console, I bought it with my first sallary... And I love it till this day. I don't boot it very often after I bought the PS4, the 3Ds and now the Switch, but it's still my most precious boy. Such great memories!
This teardowns of used consoles are really interesting, I got a ps3 for super cheap, seriously like 25 bucks a couple years ago and just had to mod it for the fan to work hard and the console not shut down on overheating, but overall it works just fine
I've got 4 bc PS3s in my collection and have had my Japanese launch PS3 for over 10 years and has CFW running with custom fan speed built-in and I play it almost every day. I reballed it within the first month I owned it after it crashed twice whilst playing a game which got me a bit worried...best decision I have made. ZERO issues on the greatest PlayStation hardware ever and with the CFW I regularly play all-region free PS1 PS2 PS3 and even PSP games. The original beast still going!! Thank you Sony ❤
Very interesting as always Jon. Come on 400k subscribers!
The new desk and lighting looks great Spawn.
I bought my OG PS3 about a week ago from a Value Village for $8! Haven't tested everything yet, but only thing issue I've found so far is the Red flashing light problem, somewhat fixed that and in the process broke the eject / power Circuit ribbon cable. I ordered a replacement from Ebay though.
Edit: It's fixed and working great now!
That can happen if you dont have av cord plugged in av or hdmi it will flash because it's not plugged in ...
Got a launch one (November 2006) from Salvation Army for $30. Disc drive needs replacing, and for piece of mind, new thermal paste.
I still have my old PS3. It was the MGS4 bundle. I remember at the time it was an incredible offer. At that point they had already removed PS2 compatibility on all models, but they brought it back one last time just for this edition. Also it was the first bundle with the new Dualshock 3 instead of the Sixaxis. I think it was also the first model with 80GB.
I didn't know any of that! I remember seeing that bundle and, even though I'd never played MGS at that point, I wanted it so bad. I read the Gamespot review of MGS4 at the time and remember it getting 10/10 lol It was years later I finally bought myself a PS3 and that game, yay first job!
Yup I bought my MGS4 bundle from EB games. I still have my original copy of MGS4. My ps3 unfortunately crapped out on me back in 2011. I still have that system to this day but I never opened it.
This video gave me the confidence to try and fix it myself. If not I got a couple of ps3 experts in mind.
The mgs4 bundle ps3 is backwards compatible? So its a ceche01?
your videos are almost as good as the ifixit ones for repairs but way better for actually learning about a system before you open up a system. Great explanations and info for what to be ready for.
smackdown here comes the pain i miss that game glad to see u still have and love it
You could buy two Wiis, a remote and Twilight Princess. Or.. more logically, one Wii, three remotes, four nunchucks, Twilight Princess, WarioWare Smooth Moves, then for Virtual Console, Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros, G unstar Heroes, Bomberman '93, Dungeon Explorer and Sonic the Hedgehog for a grand total of $598. Still cheaper than a launch PS3 with nothing. And remember, the launch PS3 didn't even come with the required HDMI cable. The official Sony one was another $40 and sold separately.
Taking inflation into account, launch PS3 is as expensive as PS4 + Switch with Zelda combo.
The PS3 20gb and 60gb models in the UK could run on scart lead which was provided, a HDMI lead wasn't a requirement, only if you wanted HD, most people ae the time I knew didn't have a clue what a HDMI lead was lol
Keep in mind, he was mostly refering to launch, Wii had nothing good except TP, unless you really enjoyed Red Steel or Excite Truck... LOL Oh and HDMI wasn't requirex, you could use any old Composite cable, component cables (up to 1080p) and even any old PlayStation RF cable!!

It might be that i dont use my consoles that much (im a mix of a pc and console gamer) but why or how do your consoles keep dying? By dying do you mean they dont turn on or you have any other hardware/software problems?
I really recommend installing custom firmware if you can, you'll be able to control the fans and PS2 backwards compatibility will be region free.
@Mc Carthy for PS3 I would recommend PSX-scene. And if you're worried about being on a low enough firmware to install custom firmware onto a launch model PS3. I believe if you're not on the one right before the newest that's out right now you should be able to install it using the newest method.

I did pretty well myself with a $50 CECHA on eBay that was UntestedAS-IS but I booted it up and it worked but was really loud so I re-did the thermal paste then I put CFW on it and upped the fan speed. Can a CECHA fit that plastic PSU that you talked about? Any other advice for a Phat PS3 owner to keep them going? Keep up the great work.
A PS3 on that condition is a definite find, especially the model you found. I guess you'll be tiring it if the PS5 ends up being backwards compatible with the all previous games. However, I somehow doubt it will includ the PS3.
'They said it worked.' That's what they all say. As someone who's built a large gaming collection, 70% or so from eBay, I can say from experience that eBay game/console sellers are some of the biggest bull-s'ers out there. I've returned so many items due to ridiculously inaccurate descriptions and outright lies. 'It was working fine when sent it...' is another favorite.

I remenber my A01 yellow lighted on me when I started playing ff xiii. Thats the first time I started playing it for about 2 to 3 hours daily. And it dies probably on day 7 of me using it like that. Sony should be ashamed of releasing such an expensive console in that state. And they never admitted this was a genuine issue.
rafpac6 bahaha, you’re complaining about Sony releasing a console with a known issue, yet don’t say anything on the 360 which is literally known for the “red ring of death” Also pretty sure Sony acknowledges the problem just like Nintendo did with its Switch screens being kind of crap, they went “ya we know it’s a problem, but it only affects like 3% of them, so it’s fine.” I could be wrong, but I vaguely recall them saying something about the yellow light after Microsoft had their major Red Ring issue.
Literally, the same thing happened to me. I feel your pain.
The yellow light was observed in about 13% of the fat PS3 consoles in their first years of life.
The red light of death was observed at 54% of released Xbox 360 on their first years of life.
If Sony should be ashamed then Microsoft should have committed harakiri.
@@SIPEROTH I mean you're not wrong, and its also why they worked so hard on the One to make sure it didn't have the red ring issue. Also, they each sold about the same amount of consoles(within a few million), and yet over half of the 360s had that issue while a small percentage comapred ot that had the yellow light. Also to be fair the yellow light indicated a variety of issues from power, to a fan problem, to motherboard issues not just one or two like the 360's red ring did.
Sony was protecting you from that painfully mediocre game.
Man, Smackdown is a blast from the past. Brings back great memories.
I have a 60 gig backwards compatible ps3, it’s my original system from back in the day, I only use it for ps2 games basically. I didn’t realize how much these have gone up in price and they are desirable. I would never sell mine but great find. Yours is in great shape.
If you want a CECHA01 to last forever it is mandatory that you change the thermal paste under both of the heat spreaders. I've successfully done this and installed CFW on the system then played MW3 and various other PS2 games for 10 hours straight and the highest speed the fan reached was 40%.
How's it going now?
@@SheddysGaming I can't speak for him, but I just repasted my CECHA01 and it is way quieter than it was before.
I just got one today that had a lot of work done to it. Extra air holes. Great so far.
@@ozmond been lookign around for one myself, where'd you get yours?
@@SheddysGamingI’ve done this to mine about a year and half (maybe more) ago and I am happy to report she still runs like a top. I will probably upgrade the psu to the aps231 and I keep my fan on 38% with the cfw
we need an update on these types of models for sure we have better quality technology available.
hope we have at least better ps2 backwards compatibility like this on ps5 if they can do ps4 they can do ps2 and ps1 at least.
memory cards and old controllers are a pain and the virtual memory card was very handy to use
Thank you for letting me feeling old with "It's 14 years ago when the PS3 came out"...... But best thing is, you didn't even test it before ripped it apart :D
i have that same model, it needs the paste changed, but it works well, good find!
Here comes the pain brings back some memories, Dr. Thuganomics John Cena was the best! 🔥
It was interesting to find out actually how much the MIPS R5900 GS+EE really cost Sony, which was less than $5 per unit.
I think axing the GS+EE actually hurt the system, along with the premium pricetag. The RSX with it's dedicated RAM and even the Cell's difficulty to work with and code for weren't strong suits, but they weren't hurting it as bad.
The loss of the emulation engine in the PS3 hurt it too, but by that time, the damage was done by the exorbitant pricetag.
I would have maybe used Carbonaut Thermalpads on the other chips and maybe the CPU and GPU, or maybe Noctua NT-H1, but that's personal preference.
Overall how clean the system looked is good to see. It really means it could have been taken care of really well. Good find.
One good thing I liked about the PS3 was the BR-Drive had a very accurate error correcting system, because even some harder to read PSOne and PS2 games would work very well, even with light damage to the surface. I really wish Sony hadn't ended the backwards compatibility, but had kept supporting it. It really highlighted the system rather than hurt it.
Sad that we'll never get the PS2 BC back on PS3!
I still got my og 80gb backwards compatible one. Still playing mortal kombat Shaolin monks to this day 😊
I like the wood table look against whatever electronics you will be working on
I've got the E01 model so basically the software emulation version and I can say with Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex and Burnout 3 Takedown that there were some graphical hiccups so I ended up not really using the PS2 software as much with it which is a shame. The Wrath of Cortex does look better on the PS3 however.
I still have my backwards compatible 80GB PS3! (the one that came bundled with motorstorm) with the original packaging, warranty sticker intact and everything lol i wonder how much its worth now
A fucking ton
Koretex about 100$ a bit more if you bundle some games with it
I have it too but the warranty sticker isn't on it anymore because it really needed maintenence because it had so much dust inside of it considering i got it from my parents in 2007 i think
Only a brainfarted would by that piece of crap
@Michael Haze I know u do
Hi , i wondering if you get a complete fan noise test from your ps3 launch edition if you can please. And one big question, my ps3 is cechc04 and when i play ps2 fan isnt controling by ps3 , i jailbreak mine and use webman but this doesn't work and i will wait until webman turns the fan to 40 degrees and then run ps2 Avoiding to get overheating.
I really like this kind of videos, when you order a console and take it appart and telling is tour opinion about it!
Damned lucky you found that screw before it dropped down into the power supply.
I find it annoying when am upgrading my GPU on my pc, a screw falls inside 🤣
@My penis is unbelievably small, but daaam unlucky u
Hopefully you won’t need that because the PS5 will be fully backwards compatible ;)
Imagine if the PS5 pulls a PS3 and stops having full backwards compatibility after the first run of systems lol
Nathan Lake I hope it doesn’t end up being like the backwards compatible PS3 where it had multiple issues and is super expensive
With PS thru PS 4?
Lmao won't happen
Wistful hopefully they learned from their mistakes!
Great vid! I have a C01. Took it apart on my channel, but didn't remove the board (it had a disc loading problem). Does the C01 have the Emotion Engine???
Mine also haves a Disc Drive problem, it struggles to Insert and Eject discs, sometimes i even have to hit the damn thing. (But it still Plays games and Blu Rays fine, so the Laser does work, Haven't tested PS2 games, hell nah)
I'm honestly so shocked at how clean it is. Totally lucked out there!
Some people don't live in filthy shitholes I guess lol, cause if that thing was in my house for 12 years playing games, media, and whatever else, I'd expect it to look like a vacuum cleaner bag inside.
I got one of these on eBay years ago, and it overheated within an hour of use and stopped working. Had to return it and buy a slim from Target, instead.
@Thomas J Shears same here but I have a regular PS3 slim and a fat for PS2 games.
@Thomas J Shears I agree with you.
Does anyone know a company or a person who can fix my PS3 backwards compatible. I had a couple of companies try to fix it but no luck. Can anyone help plz. Thank you.
computer booter
How do you do video capture your PS3? It has that HDCP (or whatever it is called) that blocks video capture. The only way I've been able to figure out how to video capture was to use component cable to HDMI into the capture card but it looks like crap.
At 14:45 it shows the heat spreader removed. Is that the same PS3? How do you get it off?
I bought the og launch 20 gig for 530$ and eventually traded it in later on, worse mistake of my life
The Wrath of Cortex is getting a remaster.
The Wrath of Cortex isn't on that.
I really want this. It was pretty much the last "classic" (and great) Crash Bandicoot game to be released. Would be perfect right before a brand new entry to follow up the N.sane Trilogy
I still use my PS3 to this day, was actually just playing some MGS3 earlier today. I really regret selling my PS2 when I was younger, I'm definitely copping one from eBay so I can re-experience all the classics I had growing up.
You can play ps2 games on the ps3,btw.
Great video. Still have my 60gb model but YLOD twice and don't have the know how to change those bad caps. So it's a giant paperweight at this point. Shame because it was the best playstation they made.
23:05 The Ps3 or the game might be bugged because I don’t see John Cena...just the name. Weird.
Perfect to install custom firmware.
That's what I was saying. Hopefully he didn't bother updating it. I know mine can get custom firmware. I just haven't been motivated to hack it. I mainly wanna do it to play PS2 games since supposedly that's a thing
No it's not. Only Hen would work.
@Tony I think cfw is only pre 3.56
@@afistfulofpimples1745 On that model or All ?
I think the minimum firmware has to be 3.55, but I have a CECH2002A (two actually) on CFW 4.85.1 firmware.
@@ChannelReuploads9451 So I'm pretty sure yours has to be Hen firmware cos I think full cfw can only be done if older than 3.56
Still have my 60 GB launch PS3 and the box and all accessories! And yep, it does still work!
Bro you got a GEM of a PS3, hope you've been enjoying it :)
