    *Fun fact for those interested:* The PS2 controller he has is definitely legit, and RARE, and it's actually kind of a collectible. It's controller model SCPH-10520 and is basically a DualShock 2 controller with the rumble motors removed. The timelines here are a little fuzzy to lock down, but for some time in 2006 Sony sold these controllers in blue packaging with the notice "DOES NOT SUPPORT VIBRATION" printed on them. The controllers themselves were cheaper than DualShock 2 controllers so most people thought Sony was introducing budget-friendly peripherals to the market. But in reality this was all due to a lawsuit with a company called Immersion over the vibration function of the DualShock controller. Sony was able to keep selling the DualShock 2 while they had an appeal under review with the court, but they actually lost their first appeal in 2006 which is why these controllers were released, and filed a new appeal with federal court. If anyone here remembers correctly, the original PS3 launched in 2006 with the SIXAXIS controller which also had its vibration functionality removed. Sony eventually settled the lawsuit in March of 2007 with Immersion and was granted the right to continue to use the vibration technology/design. That same year at a press conference in Japan Sony announced the DualShock 3 controller, which was essentially a SIXAXIS PS3 controller with the rumble motors put back in to it (lol, right?). Sony released the DualShock 3 controller in North America in 2008. For some reason a lot of people don't remember the rumbleless time period between 2006-2009. Even I forgot about it until I did this little research after seeing this video. When Sony released the PS3 Slim in 2009 (the one most of us had and remember) it came standard with a DualShock 3 controller, and since then we've had uninterrupted vibration functionality. So if you think about it, the controller he has in this video (and for anyone else who has one) could be considered a collectible because it was made only for a specific reason and had a short lifespan.

    The last wave of the PS2 controllers had the haptic feedback removed as a consequence of the patent lawsuit with Immersion and Sony not wanting to pay the licensing for the PS2. The rumble-free version should have a different model number on the bottom.

      @DUW1G1T 5 лет назад +30

      Yep, this all happened around when the original ps3's came out with the sixaxis controller that didn't have rumble either.
      After the patent litigation with Immersion Corporation ended (Microsoft settled out of court much earlier while Sony continued in the court system which is why the 360 controller always had rumble), Sony later released the dualshock 3 and continued sales of the dualshock 2.

    Controller model is SCPH-10520, released around 2006/2007. Sony announced at E3 2006 that it would remove the rumble feature from the PS3 controllers because of "interference with motion controls". In actuality Immersion's lawsuit against Sony considering haptic feedback was the cause for this, as proven by this rumble-less PS2 controller, which appeared at the same time.

    Remember when the PS3 was first released, Sony was hit with a lawsuit from a company stating that the rumble mechanism was their creation; not Sony's. The lawsuit claimed that Sony was using the rumble feature without compensating the company. Thus, the 1st round of PS3 controllers only had SixAxis controls and NO rumble feature. A few months later, the lawsuit was settled and Sony released the PS3 controller with SixAxis & rumble feature.
    All that said, I wonder if Sony was still making PS2 controllers at the time and had to remove the rumble feature in them?

      @gravis778 5 лет назад +1

      I remember the lawsuit, but I am thinking there may have been another thing with the PS2. Not everyone liked the rumble feature when it came out - I was one of those, and actually looked for controllers that did NOT have the rumble feature. Nowadays, it doesn't bother me, but some of those early rumble features were just poorly implemented by games, and I would have controllers shake out of my hands sometimes. The rumble feature added to the cost. I remember there being 3rd parties that offered controllers without the rumble feature for people like me, which cut down on the price of the controlers, but I cannot remember if Sony did or not. I do remember taking apart a Playstation controller before to fix it and it looking exactly like that, with no rumble packs, but I don't remember which system that was, but I am guessing it was a PS2 Slim because I remember picking up Kingdom Hearts 2 day one and I seem to recall having issues with my PS2 controller buttons being mushy, and I just spent all my money on the game and didn't have any money to replace the controller.
      So yeah, I don't recall the exact details, but that controller and its innards look very familar to me.

  • @PretaxEmu
    @PretaxEmu 5 лет назад +11

    Yes, there was an Official PS2 Controller without Dualshock capabilities around 2008 (from my research) and it didn't have rumble for the reason that Sony had to temporarily stock stores with tweaked controllers to dodge licence fees when it comes to vibration but swiftly got the licence for vibration back so they could continue the manufacturing process for Dualshock 2 controllers.

    There were some early ps2 controllers that didn’t have rumble motors. I remember my very first ps2 the original model didn’t have any rumble motors but looked like a DualShock 2, and was jealous when my parents bought my sister a ps2 slim and hers came with a DualShock 2 with rumble motors

      What it could be, there is a black version of the original “analog” controller that came before the dualshock which looked just like it, which shipped with early ps2 like mine, and later ps1, it looked just like DualShock 2s. That’s what it might be

      @@ultramagnushurts It's surprising it happened at all given that there's a number of games that actually require the Dual Shock 2, and having owned both the PS1 and PS2 the Dual Shock 1 did come with rumble. It was an answer to the analogue and rumble compatible N64 controller after all. I digress, the DS2 actually had touch sensitive buttons which could trigger different actions based upon how hard they were pressed. While this wasn't commonly implemented it was necessary to progress in some games, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time being a good example of this as it had a late dungeon where the puzzles required this feature.

    • @ultramagnushurts

      flarpman2233 that’s true. I’m not sure why Sony did it at all tbh either. I was 10 when I got it and remember it vividly, and I have it somewhere in my attic boxed away. I know a lot of the FPS didn’t differentiate between the analogue and the DualShock but I do remember some games had to have a DualShock and I had to breakdown and spend my allowance to buy one.

      Bangin' Badger Bangin' Badger it’s definitely clickbaity... it’s walking that line a little too closely.
      The wording of the title alludes to him not getting what he paid for.
      It’s no different that if I said “ I ordered a big Mac from McDonald’s, but you won’t believe what was in the bag”... Only for there to have been exactly what I ordered with no deviations.
      Why couldn’t he have just said “I ordered a refurbished PS2 from GameStop... And it’s not bad” ?
      It’s definitely more subtle than some of the overtly blatant click bait that a lot of other youtubers will use, but it’s there.
      The entire purpose of saying *“… And this is what they sent me”* is to keep peoples interest piqued throughout the video because they’re expecting something more/unusual/different.
      So you end up watching more of it expecting some big surprise, or omission than you would have if you had known it wasn’t going to be anything but what he ordered.

    • @joshuawilloughby2696
      @joshuawilloughby2696 5 лет назад +7

      @@quiettimegaming3642 it's how RUclipsrs attract clicks, it's almost standard for all RUclipsrs these days. It triggers someone's curiosity and pulls them into the video to see what happened. I really don't blame him because he isn't one of those big channels that attract the lowest common denominator (kids) in to watch videos on fortnite. You have to have a title that draws the eye of people who arnt subscribed to the channel, who may be curious to see what he got when he ordered the ps2. If it was labeled as 'i ordered a ps2 from GameStop... And it was ok' then there would be no curiosity about the contents of the video and the user may pass the video by. I don't like clickbaity titles but it's just how the system works, regardless of if it's a video or a news article, they all have titles like this to get you to click to find out more.

    • @quiettimegaming3642
      @quiettimegaming3642 5 лет назад +9

      Joshua Willoughby I wouldn’t say that it’s standard for all youtubers and channels. I wouldn’t even say it’s standard for most channels.
      But over the past year or so I have admittedly been seeing that intentionally vague and clickbaity wording more than ever before. But that’s just and excuse to justify misleading or crappy actions.
      Saying “everyone else is doing it” is never an acceptable justification for doing something that you know is wrong.
      On top of that, if you’re willing to click bait it shows that you are willing to sacrifice long term viability and respect in exchange for a few extra clicks now. Because while he maybe a younger/smaller channel now… He won’t be forever, these kind of things won’t be forgotten, and like every other RUclipsr that does stuff like this, one day someone is going to make a video and call him out for all of his instances of lies and click bait and misleading his audience over the years…
      And everyone will just hop all over it because people love to be outraged.
      You can see MatPat going through that exact same thing right now, where everyone’s calling him out for anything he’s ever done… And even things he didn’t, all Because people felt he used a misleading title and thumbnail for his recent HeartBound video. And things started snowballing from there.
      In fact I would argue more of the opposite position. Where, *if everyone is doing something, why not stand out by being the only person who isn’t?*
      The reality is that good content doesn’t need to click bait. And there was nothing wrong with this video, meaning the clickbait wasn’t unnecessary.

    I'd wager the ps2 controller is a relatively new one. Early in the ps3 era, when they would still be selling ps2's and ps2 controllers, Sony was in a trademark dispute with the owner of the dualshock technology, which is why early ps3 controllers don't have rumble. Its entirely possible, if not likely, that ps2 controllers made during that dispute were manufactured without rumble.

      @@doomkid02 all my issues were because of the ceramic paste they use between the processor and heat sink aging. When it gets old, dried-out, and cracked, it doesn't work well anymore. The difference in effectiveness between ceramic and silver is negligible, but silver lasts a lot longer. Having one long session with expired thermal paste is enough to overheat the area of the board around the processor to the point it gets damaged. I wish they charged us the extra money and used silver paste. I'd think even for people lucky enough to have not had problems, the assurance that they won't have any problems in the future that comes with a silver thermal paste would be worth the negligible price difference. Ceramic is about 15 cents cheaper to use per machine, but also saves money because there are less mistakes; if a machine accidentally applies the ceramic a little bit outside the lines so to speak, the conductivity of ceramic isn't enough to damage the motherboard, but with silver they'd have to be sure every application was correct.

    Fu fact the tape you see on the ribbon often, it's not to get it out of the way of the optical pickup, it's so the ribbon doesn't pop up too gmhigh and scratch the disc, we see that very often in PS2 slims.

I was pleased to see that nba jam came with the box, however no manual, and my ds, while having some scratches on the shell(both inside and out) looked and worked very nicely. considering the games you showed on the video where you ordered gamecube games, i thought i would be safe in ordering a couple on the website
    so i ordered three games, they took less than a week to get to me, and one of them was in the original box
    so i was pretty optimistic at first
    they also all looked pristine save for a bit of smudging and scratching here and there
    when i tried them, all three of them would not function
    they would load a little bit, then it would say the disc could not be read
    and i know it's not my gamecube because not only do i keep it in the absolute best shape possible, but i also can play all the other games i own on it perfectly fine
    went to a local physical store and had them take them all back and order me replacements
    that was last friday and it is now monday and only *now* have they shipped
    this is just getting worse and worse
    i'm going to be incredibly disappointed if the replacements i get don't work

      Actually, it's the other way around. Newer PS2s have issues playing some PS1 AND PS2 games. The older PS2s run all PS2 games, and all of the PS1 library, save like 5-6 games. This is why I have a fat PS2 instead of a slim one. Plus, the slim ones get hotter.

      @richardsinclair7661 5 лет назад

      @TheLegendkiller2100 Eh. I can't say for sure whether that's true or not. I'm not saying there isn't evidence supporting the slims over the fats, but I think that really depends on how well one takes care of their consoles. I've had my fat PS2 for years and it still works just as good as it ever did. Never had a problem with it. I play it regularly too, considering I like collecting games, PS2 games especially.

      @@CAPCOM784 I never said the fat PS2s last longer than the slim ones. I said I couldn't be sure, and it depended on whether you took care of your console. I should've said this as well, but you also have to hope you're just lucky enough to avoid getting a bad unit.
      Don't treat your experience as fact. By your logic, I could claim the fat PS2s are better because I've had 2 slims die on me, before being replaced by my current fat PS2 and it still works perfectly to this day, all these years later.
