First off, why didn't you set the time to check if that battery is still good or been replaced by gamestop? Secondly, controller ports break on the dreamcast because people hot swap controllers. If you have a dreamcast, for the love of god please set your controllers up completely (including vmu's and rumble paks) BEFORE turning on your dreamcast.
Yeah that was my first thought with the clock too, I bought a refurb PS2 not long ago and the battery was dead. Those batteries have around a 10 year life, so after 20 years most will probably need changing. He also talks about soldering a new battery, which in my experience is a bad idea, it's 50/50 whether you'd overheat one of those coin cells and cause them to leak. It's a far better idea to just attach a proper holder.
From what I can tell, the biggest issue with them is the optical drive. If that goes, it's going to be increasingly hard to source a replacement. But, on the brightside there are optical disc emulators out there and it's super easy to back up the discs for use, assuming the drive still works.
I bought a Dreamcast at a Flea Market for $25 and it came bundled with 4 Sega sports titles, Crazy Taxi, and Fighting Force 2. Also paid $20 for a copy of Seaman with the mic included.

I am really enjoying these refurbish segments, also watching you take apart consoles is helping me understand the internals im totally going to start deep diving consoles and replace parts on my current retro consoles
I’ve believed for a long while (past research etc.) that you can copy a game if you own the original copy. Maybe I’m wrong but even if I’m legally wrong; if you’ve purchased a game you should own the right to a copy of the code no matter the circumstance.
@@israelgottmein6925 I agree. I DO make my own backups from my PS1 and PS2 games, but I can't do it with my Dreamcast and GameCube games, as Dreamcast discs use a proprietary format called GD-ROM, and GameCube discs are encrypted, so I DO download those.
holy shit i was convinced he didn't make one to begin with cause he's acting like it's as easy as popping it in your pc and burning it to a blank CD which there are multiple reasons that isn't gonna work in the first place but i didn't even notice that LMAOO
@@bionyx6368 yeah exactly, he'd have to Rip it via the Dreamcast itself and then make a MIL-CD format version of it by Scrambling the image. no one does that so it's a bit dumb like he's acting like he totally did all that.
It wasn't an 'underrated' system, but it died young because Sega couldn't get necessary parts for it in the volume they needed at a crucial point. 'Underrated' means 'reviews and opinions gave it a lesser estimation than it deserved' and that's not the case.
KeroBero Nah they wrecked themselves. They could’ve been selling consoles alongside Sony and Nintendo if they had better practices. This console was initially successful but they didn’t have enough money to keep it alive.
Assuming he did ever own a disc of the game, then ReviveDC could probably be considered an Authorized Agent under 17 U.S. Code § 117 in this particular situation, so it very well might be legal. I don't know if that's ever been formally adjudicated though, probably because honestly no one cares. No one is losing money from people playing Dreamcast games in 2020. Nor was anyone ever losing much money due to piracy, if you believe the massive amount of peer-reviewed scientific research that seems to show that people tend to only pirate things that they have no way of buying in the first place. In many cases, people go back and buy the thing later, or generate third party sales via word-of-mouth even if they can never afford to buy it, or if it's not available in their area. This is because most people have feelings. Only 1% of the general population are psychopaths who choose (in many cases, according to fMRI research) to turn off their feelings and take advantage of people just for kicks. However, according to research data, over 20% of CEOs are psychopaths, compared to 1% of everyone else. So they tend to be really paranoid and just assume everyone would do what they would do when it comes to questions of ethics (for example, bragging about your "winnings" while underpaid people are dying of heat stoke in your warehouses), and then project that narrative to all their flying monkeys to repeat to everyone, regardless of what real research actually says. You know there are some developers and musicians, myself included, who actually encourage piracy of their own work, and they still make money. Maybe it's just the people who make stuff so shitty that people DON'T want to go back and buy it later, after they get a chance to actually see it, who are spreading this nonsense.
i was looking to see if anyone said this. lol. Because you can't just put dreamcast games in a PC and back them up. Dreamcast games are not CD-roms they are GD-roms which is a disc format that can only be read by the dreamcast. the only way to actually make a backup is to do it through a network connection to a PC and it takes a LONG time. and on top of that cutscenes need to be shrunk in order for the GD-Rom data to fit on a CD-rom. kind of funny how he acts like you can just pop the disc in a pc and make a backup when you can't.
@@nighteel Yeah .... i was like wtf... this guy has no clue how to make a backup .... you can either use your solution with the network ... or rip to an sd card with the sd adapter from DC-swat or jj1odm ... or you can even use your pc ... if you can get a very old (and very rare) cd drive model and flash a custom firmware to it. Maybe it is also possible with the sega katana ...(don't know about that one, but seems possible)

I wonder if when that came up he thought "oh shit! I hope nobody notices that!" How stupid does he think we are anyways? Claiming he made a backup of a GD-rom using nothing but a standard PC drive.
I personally think red is nice, what i really want though was for the spiral to be Orange, which they almost did, because orange is the color of luck in japan, orange is also my favorite color.
@Ordinary GP A lot of the PAL Dreamcast games had a 50/60Hz selector so you could run them in 60Hz mode if your TV supported it. This was on a title-by-title basis though - and there were some annoying games that obviously had 60Hz support coded in because they worked at 60Hz with the VGA box connected, but didn't give you the option when connected to a TV.
@Ordinary GP You can also mod them to play out of region games, luckily our TV's here support RGB Scart (in the US you basically have to own a PVM/BVM to get that kind of quality) so the video quality will be much better for systems in Europe with the right hookups and RGB mods if needed. All our TV's made from the 90's onwards support a format called PAL60, which is what PS2, GC and a lot of PAL Dreamcast games support. But yeah with a regionfree mod you can basically play imports/backups from the US or Japan in 60Hz too, with a way better video signal and TV to boot ;)
@@linkhatchet Yes but it's the other way around, in the Pal territories there was a company in Germany that already has the red/orange swirl logo so SEGA used the Blue color over there.

Every 20 sales have to sell a warranty, every 40 sales have to sell a power up rewards pro. Then I got my two 360 games and left, and they never put the damn game in one of the cases. I had to go back. Anyways, GameStop is a 50/50 chance I would say, but they do have a good return policy so that’s always on the customers side. Keep the great videos coming, you see now my number one game channel lately.
IIRC you can't copy the Dreamcast disc using your PC drive, the discs are proprietary 1gb GD-Roms. You would need some sort of software on the Dreamcast like Dreamshell to rip the GD-Rom. Then you would have to transfer it to the PC and modify the media to fit a CD-R in MIL format. It's way easier just to find the premade CDI online. (Which is what he did)
angelshide yeah, I was curious about his ripping of the disc as well because last I heard there was only a couple of drives that could do it otherwise you had to do it from the dreamcast via the broadband adapter or dream shell. Then I saw revive dreamcast project pop up in the bottom right... lol
Yeah, as soon as he said he was gonna "make a backup" and that he "has a disc drive and everything" I knew he was just gonna grab a copy off the internet.
I still have my sports one in all black. Still works. Fond memories playing sword of the beserk, phantasy star online, the online browser disk, Sonic adventure and the mini games you play on the memory cards with the Chao...the list goes on lol. Oh and there was an arena game of spawn that was awesome to play with friends too. I need to pull it out from storage and play again...
Yep although my original battery still holds a charge, compared to the clock capacitor on my Original Xbox which was bulging and about to start leaking onto the mobo.
It would still be twenty minutes of narration about the box, the receipt, and anything else he can milk for time by doting on the so-what details, like most of his videos. He'd probably show himself testing every single key individually.
I've had a good experience of using tape on sticker residue, it removes it completely. I used just some regular packing tape on the adhesive that was left behind on the Intel sticker I ripped off my laptop.
Often I find that when I pull a sticker off something, I can use it to pull up the residue as well unless the 'sticky' has turned to gluey crap like old electrical tape.
The reason the controller ports on the Dreamcast would sometimes randomly stop working is because there's a fuse on the board that can blow out if you plug/unplug anything into the controller ports while the console is running
I love when you do these! That feeling of not knowing what YOU'RE gonna get is fun for us too as much as it is for you!! Top notch review! I just love these man!
The laser might need a simple recalibration. You basically pop it open and twist a screw a half turn, test and repeat until it reads. I did the opposite to make mine read cdrw instead of CDR.
yeah i have a revision 0 dreamcast that doesn't read discs either, but mine was caused by a gear in the laser's arm warping and cracking, specifically, the gear that's right on the motor.
Unfortunately Sega used pretty cheap disk drives to keep the cost down after the Saturn's poor sales in the west due partially to it costing $100 more than the PS1. Despite its weird design the Saturn is built like a tank in comparison to most other consoles.
I believe they changed the battery. The original battery has a blue border. The original Dreamcast Battery is a Rechargeable ML2413 battery and should be replaced by and should be replaced by a ML2032 3v rechargeable battery (since the original model does not exist anymore), but most refurbishers puts a non rechargeable CR2032 (which is non rechargeable) or a LIR2032 (which is rechargeable but it is 3,6v) and it will slowly damage the Dreamcast.
Love these retro console videos. I bought the metroid prime series cause of these videos lol. I saw how cheap you got them from Gamestop so I did the same thing and all three came with original cases and prime 2 with manuals 👍👍👍
This was the first console I ever took apart and was able to put back together too. I remember getting this for Christmas of '99. I got NFL 2K with it and played it non stop. About a year later the GD ROM drive stopped reading my games. I went to EB Games with my mom and bought a used Dreamcast, went home and swapped the GD ROM drive. Went back to EB Games and returned the used Dreamcast I bought from them and told them it didn't work. The benefit of keeping the original Dreamcast with the swapped GD ROM drive was games like PSO wouldn't view it as a different system. To this day I still have that Dreamcast and that GD ROM drive is still working.
I got my broadband adapter on eBay for $125. I had been trying to find one for AGES! At first I thought I got scammed bc the shipping progress said it was at customs for like 3 days and the shipper stopped responding to my messages, then it said it couldn’t find my tracking number. I was livid and then one minute I refreshed it and it said it was at the post office up the street from my house. I immediately ran over several people to get to it and I LOVE IT! That was also the day I found out my DC could play backup copies... I love my DC.

Thank you for your interest. The console can not read the discs, but it can probably be repaired by calibrating the laser. Yes, I am a big fan of Berserk, since 1996 and I loved the game, especially the bright red eye, the fights and the cannon with endless ammunition.
Isaac Delacroix hope you can get that laser fixed my friend. That game will obviously be remembered by us both. Most memorable part? That crazy hard battle with the giant gargoyle. Least I think that’s what it was? 🤔

Funny you mentioned the Broadband Adapter. Back when I worked at Funcoland and Babbages, I would always check them just encase they had BBAs on them when traded in. I would also check Gamecubes later on for BBA's as well.
Because you can't simply put a GDR into a DVD drive and rip it. They are on Gigabyte Disc's, which obviously can't be ripped via PC disc drive lol. I laughed out loud when he said he was gonna rip it with the PC, "Nope"!
Brilliant video, here in the UK you can still get brand new bits and pieces for the DC, Controllers, keyboards, VMUs and rumble packs, you see them on ebay from time to time and I remember seeing a lot at bidding auctions before the internet took off going for very little, sometimes it was sealed games but always the lesser titles like Metropolis Street Racer and Chu Chu Rocket normally in x50 auctions, it varied but mostly games like these, remember in europe they have fancy blue and clear cases which broke easy so were worth it really cheap just for the cases or part cases. Check the inside of your controller for dust, if there isn't any, it's found new stock. The games were a rip off IMHO maybe 1 boxed game and 1 VMU (it doesn't need it's batteries!), I noticed you used the Revive DC version of Crazy Taxi (Mmm) looks like half the internet noticed too, good luck with that HDMI mod I look forward to seeing the video on that. I changed the LED in my DC when I did my Battery MOD which is now a battery holder not soldered in, remember it uses a rechargable battery (LIR2032).
7:18 wish granted. Also, Crazy Taxi 2 is one of the best games on the system, and you really can't play it on anything but the DC, unfortunately (I know they made a PSP port, but Crazy Taxi 2 had issues on that).
Pro tip for anyone here; your Dreamcast GD-Rom drives rails dry out over time, the plastic pieces of the laser sliding down the metal rails with no lube or dried out lube cause that grinding sound. At worst, this issue can completely cause your Dreamcast to stop reading discs, with almost no lube the drives get hung up and appear to stop working. If you use white lithium grease to re-lube the rails on the drive, the drive becomes MUCH quieter, and in almost all cases the drives come back to life like that if they’ve stopped working. HIGHLY recommend doing that to any Dreamcast or console you own!
Always neat to be catching up on the backlog of a channel I've come to enjoy and hearing about them hitting subscriber milestones, only to see how much further they are now
wait ..how did you back up your copy of crazy taxi ? a PC disc drive wont read those GD-ROM disc .. you would maybe need the broadband adapter to rip the game ????
With Skies of Arcadia, you could predict (and avoid) random encounters just by listening to the disk drive. That's how loud it was. It would make a loud noise right before the encounter. If you stopped moving for a few seconds it wouldn't trigger.
I love how he pretends that he actually made a backup of Crazy Taxi himself and not just downloaded one. He claims he has a drive in the PC to do it. I'd really like to know what drive he has to backup GD-ROMs lol. Then at 9:42 it has an image added to the boot screen from the group that ripped it! LOL!
the main issue with loading backups off of the dreamcast is that, since they're in a different mode, loading behaves a bit differently, so for example, if making a backup copy of crazy taxi, the console won't be able to stream in the assets fast enough unless you burn it in such a way that all the data is on the outside edge of the disc
That noise is kind of nostalgic. I think it made me more patient for the games to load since I could hear it trying, also playing with headphones metigates the console noise a bit. Enjoyed the video.
Spawn you've done the title again. Please stop with the 'and this is what they sent me'. This type of title is for when you order a set of plates from ebay and open it to find a severed hand.
The price for seaman and an actual mic alone is a steal! That game without the mic goes for $30-$70 and near $100 with
@@jsc315 It came in the original box too.... however stupid, stupid me lost the green mic topper over the course of 3 years of owning said Dreamcast.......... Also at the same flea market, some old man was selling Super Mario Sunshine used for $3....

@@Irraptured how about you try *playing the game?*
@@Irraptured ooooooooookkkkaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy if you say so, but you are missing out. i have more nostalgia for the N64 as i never had one but i remember watching people play on it when i was at a summer daycare for a few years. i only got a dreamcast maybe 5 years ago and i had never experienced it or associated any of its games with it before then, and let me just say that if you want a good comparison between the two, it would be star wars episode 1 racer, i played it on the PC when i was a kid you i got treated to the best version, but its a very close second on the dreamcast, its only missing a few minor sound effects such as watto humming at the end of a race.
what im saying, is that if you ever do get around to trying it out, (well first and foremost look for one with a yamaha laser) you wont be disappointed. its a great system with a distinct style to it and a great library of games.
@7:22 "it'd be so cool if they remade proskater 2" well... you predicted it.
I am really enjoying these refurbish segments, also watching you take apart consoles is helping me understand the internals im totally going to start deep diving consoles and replace parts on my current retro consoles
"I made a backup. Legal copy."...yet the boot sequence says "Revice DC Project"
The Dreamcast was such an underrated system! Loved it!
It wasn't an 'underrated' system, but it died young because Sega couldn't get necessary parts for it in the volume they needed at a crucial point. 'Underrated' means 'reviews and opinions gave it a lesser estimation than it deserved' and that's not the case.
@@jamescarter3196 Thanks. Never knew it was a supply issue.
Love your car buddy
Too bad they got wrecked by Sony with the PS2.
KeroBero Nah they wrecked themselves. They could’ve been selling consoles alongside Sony and Nintendo if they had better practices. This console was initially successful but they didn’t have enough money to keep it alive.
Nice ReviveDC logo there on your "self made back-up." That's insulting to all of our intelligences.
Who cares lol
I thought the same thing lmao. Its not the end of the world tho tbh
That's not a 'legal backup' that you made - it has the 'Revive DC' logo on the boot screen!
@@nighteel
Yeah .... i was like wtf... this guy has no clue how to make a backup .... you can either use your solution with the network ... or rip to an sd card with the sd adapter from DC-swat or jj1odm ... or you can even use your pc ... if you can get a very old (and very rare) cd drive model and flash a custom firmware to it. Maybe it is also possible with the sega katana ...(don't know about that one, but seems possible)
@@nighteel I think this is why Broadband adapters were so sought after as they were obviously much faster at dumping games.

Glad I'm from Europe where the Dreamcast logo was a nice blue. It's Sega, it has to be blue, right?
I think it’s red in the US because of a company was gonna sue them for the same color logo or something
@@linkhatchet Yes but it's the other way around, in the Pal territories there was a company in Germany that already has the red/orange swirl logo so SEGA used the Blue color over there.
I remember when I got my first Dreamcast, I live in the UK so we had the "Blue Swirl" model, my friend had the "Red Swirl" version in storage for a couple years and never used it, sold it to me for £40 with 4 controlls, 4 VM's, 4 Vibro packs, 4 Fishing Reels and about 20 games. You can't dump dreamcast games in a normal CD drive, there's no shame in saying that you're downloaded a copy off the internet bro
Shicky256 he can be arrested for that, so he's probably saying that to avoid getting arested
Lmao I was thinking the exact same thing!!

Yeah, i think it's legal to download a backup of a game you own actually

IIRC you can't copy the Dreamcast disc using your PC drive, the discs are proprietary 1gb GD-Roms. You would need some sort of software on the Dreamcast like Dreamshell to rip the GD-Rom. Then you would have to transfer it to the PC and modify the media to fit a CD-R in MIL format.
It's way easier just to find the premade CDI online. (Which is what he did)
How did you make a backup of Crazy Taxi in a PC? It's a GD Rom, which means you need a modded Dreamcast to dump them, you can't do it from the PC.
He probably just downloaded an ISO but says he ripped it to make everyone shut up about piracy
@@Biskut Yup. It's a ReviveDC rip.
angelshide yeah, I was curious about his ripping of the disc as well because last I heard there was only a couple of drives that could do it otherwise you had to do it from the dreamcast via the broadband adapter or dream shell.
Then I saw revive dreamcast project pop up in the bottom right... lol
You can burn Dreamcast games with a format file ending with name extension called .cdi to a blank CD-R and it just automatically runs.
Yeah, as soon as he said he was gonna "make a backup" and that he "has a disc drive and everything" I knew he was just gonna grab a copy off the internet.

The reason the controller ports on the Dreamcast would sometimes randomly stop working is because there's a fuse on the board that can blow out if you plug/unplug anything into the controller ports while the console is running

That's what happened to mine too
Unfortunately Sega used pretty cheap disk drives to keep the cost down after the Saturn's poor sales in the west due partially to it costing $100 more than the PS1.

HIGHLY recommend doing that to any Dreamcast or console you own!

the main issue with loading backups off of the dreamcast is that, since they're in a different mode, loading behaves a bit differently, so for example, if making a backup copy of crazy taxi, the console won't be able to stream in the assets fast enough unless you burn it in such a way that all the data is on the outside edge of the disc
