My darkest nightmares could not have even foretold what would happen should you have said "This is not a box." Friend, I thank you. This is truly a great day. Edit: I've actually never seen a Metroid Fusion pak, I always emulated, and when my N3DSXL still had working R and ZR triggers, I played the VC version. Earlier this year I picked up Metroid Prime 3 from GameStop for somewhere between $9 and $12. Was pretty happy with the purchase, even though the box it came in had some crusty orange stuff all over it. I was slightly more amazed by the dirtiness of the case than the insane deal I was getting. For all I knew the game was new without the original case because the disc had no scratches, nicks, bumps, etc. on either side. Either someone took great care of their disc before selling it (thank you!) or they had to start getting rid of Wii boxes to make room and this copy just never sold. Either way I'm impressed.

While I by no means like anything about GameStop and how it is run, this video was trying a little too hard to crap on the items in the box. Almost no game stores disassemble games to check the battery and at most will power it on and see if it saves. Saying the original battery is somehow bad when it still works is somewhat dishonest. It's pretty labor intensive relative to what you can charge to replace video game cartridge batteries, so it's completely understandable GameStop isn't going to mess with that especially if it's still working. As for the "refurbished" PS1, I'm pretty sure they put that sticker on a used console after it is tested, or maybe it was repaired once many years ago when it was still relevant and happened to get traded back in. Interesting that it didn't work, though it could be the fault of the game as my SCPH-1001 PSX (very first gen) was picky about which games it would read when my PS2 or PS3 would read any PS1 game you threw at it. You might try buffing the Crash disc with a paper towel or cloth as if there is residual wax it might keep it from working. Resurfaced games are a mixed bag and sometimes you're better off leaving it scratched. The reason the Crash disc was in a paper sleeve is because those crappy polystyrene CD cases get cracked super easily in shipping and they probably had a ton of complaints of cracked cases, so they said "screw it, here's paper". Maybe a more durable polypropylene slim DVD case would fare better, but these are already low margin sales and even adding $0.50-1 would be cutting into their profits pretty substantially. Lastly, the Mario Kart cartridge back looked like it was a victim of the standard yellowing that happens to about 25-50% of Nintendo plastic from that era. Due to a flame retardant chemical used, chemical yellowing happens even without UV exposure. Swapping the back out for a collector wouldn't be a big deal, either, as there are probably tons of 99 cent sports games that have the same back. Overall, it felt like you were expecting everything from GameStop to be sold as if it were collector-shape eBay items and that's just a ridiculous expectation considering you're paying at or below market price for similar condition versions of these games. I found this stuff to be par for a typical used game store and no better or worse than what you'd find at most indie game stores I've been to. There's plenty of reasons to hate GameStop, but this order isn't one of them.
Many mom and pop game shops will check things like batteries. I agree it's not something that's particularly reasonable to expect from a chain store, but it is absolutely something that places that specialize in this sort of product will do.
With that resurfaced Crash Bandicoot, you can also tell that it's been through the buffer by the white residue on the inner ring. Used to see that all the time with refurbished disks from Gamestop.
@Justin Grimes: Nothing wrong with resurfacing a disc to buff scratches out on disc, All data is behind the front label on the metallic surface anyways. As long a you can't see light through the disc should be okay. If you can see light through disc it is done forever and a coaster. None of my discs have scratches cause I always put games back in case after using. But, when I worked at a local family owned game store we would buff scratches out of discs for customers all the time and hardly ever had an issue. If really deep scratches we would try but tell customer if disc is done for It was not our problem (liability).
I ordered a copy of Silent Hill on PS1 to replace my missing copy. To my surprise I got a black label damn near mint copy. I was really happy. I paid $20 compared to $30+ on eBay.

@@noobiewatcherz9938 that the whole point of collecting for some. It's not as fun if you just play emulation. I really enjoy finding the actual games and playing everything how it was back in the day.
A jewel case is not much safer to "ship" a game. If the middle pins break down the disc can move all over the case and get scratched. Other reason is probably for storage. Jewel cases take way more inventory space than simple slips.
He complains that the disc came in a paper sleeve, but he'd probably also complain if it came in a jewel case and the front was cracked or a pin broke and scratched the disc, like you said. Guy seems a bit strange.
I worked at an EB shortly before/during the GameStop transition. I picked up quite a few old nes and SNES games for 1/10th the cost of many today. Today's GameStop is trash.

you are trying so hard to shit on gamestop here in the title, it seems like that they sent you a random box full of games, but LITERALLY at the beginning section of the video, you said that you hand-picked all the items to be delivered to you. This seems a bit desparate.
he never said they sent him a random box full of games in the title. You just assumed what the title meant and were wrong. he was just making a video reviewing random retro games/console/accessories and letting people know what they can expect from gamestop.
"Did they change the laser?" Early models did have laser problems, yes, due to thermal reactive plastics used next to the power supply, but I went through 3 PlayStation consoles, from the original with RCA Ports as well as a Multi-out for A/V and a Parallel Port on the back to the version that dropped the RCA ports but still had a Parallel Port, to the version that didn't have the Parallel Port. All of them stopped working eventually, just wouldn't turn on. It was a pretty common issue in this part of Texas due to both humidity and heat. I did buy a PSX with LCD screen and it's still chuggin' along like a champion.
ya there's no clickbait in the title. He ordered stuff from gamestop and he does a video showing the quality of each item he received. If you thought it meant anything else its on you for not understanding.
I feel you have everything backwards on the whole game stop thing. I would never expect GameStop to replace game batteries but I would expect them to inspect / referb the consoles. I am not a GameStop fan boy, but i feel you are just way off base on this one. For the amount you are paying for the game you can open it up fire up the iron and do 30 seconds of work. I would not trust my 17 year old son to do this as a part of his part time job after school.
They dont fix it at the store, they send it off to "professionals" and they "refurbish" it. And it doesnt matter the price, they said it was "refurbished" meaning they fixed it and it should work with no problems, and if there are any, send it back. You shouldn't have to fix it yourself no matter how quick you can do it. You paid for it to come in working perfectly, not fix something they goofed up on

I used to work at GameStop. They aren't supposed to take games without labels or with tape on them. And as far as the old systems, they have no way to test them. They make sure all the cables and controller is there and they just send them back to the warehouse. Same with old controllers. They can only test the last 2 systems generations (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and those games). Handhelds can be tested when they come in and should be. Pretty much everything that comes in that is an older generation, a sticker prints that says return to warehouse, it goes into a drawer and is sent back once a week.
@@blarghts It's unlikely they would. They don't want to have to spend any money they don't have to. I can't tell you how many times my first manager at GameStop invested her own money into the store buying cleaning products, vacuum cleaners (because they would send us used ones that wouldn't work), etc. and never got paid back by the company. We had so many things that were broken that had to be fixed over the time we were there. and it would take months to get it done. Our security system was messed up for like 4 months until they finally sent someone.

It's almost certainly not personal, his GameStop console breakdown videos did really well and the algorithm favours new videos in a discernible high-view series (not all of the channel's Gamestop videos, just the ones with similar titles to this one.) There's no reason for him not to keep on making similar content, especially when the channel still has a wide variety of other content and the algorithm's really favoring these videos in particular.
@RoseWolfz Prime And the overpriced memory cards and the fact that Gamestop didnt really get a lot of games for it - at least in my area they didnt. Personally, for me it was the rear touch pad of the Vita that I didnt like. Always bumping it and shit lol.
7:10 I'm confused with how he says "most people wouldn't do this and they'd have to live with what they get"... like if any normal person just orders a used game online to play, it's pretty obvious that they wouldn't screw open the fucking cartridge and then cry about the inside... like what kind of high quality stuff do you expect when ordering used games online...

lol Gamestop employees were not allowed / don't really have time to open Gameboy games to check the battery, at least when I worked there back in 2006. Maybe the distribution center could? Idk.
The saddest thing I read from r/gamecollecting is that this guy was telling us in a thread that when he worked in the warehouse that packed all the retro games for GameStop that they would take the large jewel cases from Sega Saturn and PS1 and throw them out for reasons that it would require bigger packages to ship the games.
Unless you are lucky probably not since the "retro craze" hit. I used to dig through bins of games at shops or flea markets $1 a game and find hidden gems like rare games or first prints of games, etc. Now the same shops and flea market vendors have the same bins of games and want $10-15 a game and they've long since picked out any gems to sale separately for crazy mark up.
Whether or not any games would be a steal or not at smaller stores and flea markets, we can all agree that 99.9% of the time it's better prices than gamestop.
Maybe in your area. Over here, the chumps are selling mario duck hunt for 20$ and a boxed copy of smb2 for 50$. And no, neither of these games should cost this much.
They may not stay open for that long. They have about 700 million in the bank from the sale of their cellphone division, with massive debt. They want out.
I was a manager (sga) at gamestop till earlier this month. We took all retro games and systems in on trade and they get sent to warehouse. Gamestop resells our retro trade ins via the online site. The thing is though, the way gamestop outlets and warehouses process packages and mail they dont usually use bubble wrap or cushion they just throw them right in the box. They arrive with cracked cases and sometimes worse. We aren't limited to what we take either. We are allowed to take in retro games without cases so most likely you might get shipped a game in a yellow little sleeve if warehouse was (and likely will be) lazy. I wouldn't suggest ordering from the website. Ever. For retro games OR modern games due to the way they are handled. Go into the store if you want modern games, go to local retro shops for older games. Gamestops warehouse does NOT care if you get something in working condition or not. Trust me.
Highly unlikely, the chance of them screening orders seems highly unlikely, and a huge waste of resources. It's not like they're a household name everyone would recognize. The vast majority wouldn't recognize their channel name, let alone their actual name. I suppose it's possible they could recognize an email address if it was using the channel name, but I think it's a major stretch that they would notice/care/give preferential treatment. This order most likely just got sent straight to a packing order at a big warehouse.
Honestly, when you say that you used to check the Pokemon games for a battery done right and fix it if it is not, it made me smile. That definitely doesn't sound like something that would be in your job description, but you did it because you knew people would want it done or otherwise risk an unhappy customer.
Wrong. Those cases break very easily during shipment. Often times ps1 discs are very strong and will do much better just in a sleeve unless you like your games come with broken glass.
I purchased a PlayStation 1 after its original release and remember it like it was yesterday when my best friends daughter broke the unit after only 2 weeks of my owning it. She was 5 years old and had been told over and over not to run or jump around the game controller cables. CRASH !!! After that, it wouldn't boot up at all. I was so pissed, but didn't get all verbal about it. I just simply stated " Oh well, there goes that !!! ". This all happened on a Saturday and my buddy and I worked for the same corporation who worked us Monday thru Friday. Come Monday, when he came to pick me up ( we carpooled together because I was on his way to work and gave him gas money to pick me up ), I got in his pickup truck and there was a PS1 unit sitting in the middle of the bench seat. I asked him, " Hey, what's up with that PlayStation ?? ". He said, " That's yours ". I was all, " Dude, that's your wife's PlayStation, she's going to kill you !!! ". He simply stated after a chuckle, " You let me worry about that ". lol. He was so goofy. We lost him to a heart attack about 22 years ago. Dennis had a heart of Gold. His wife, Jenny, also left us about 2 years ago. Sidenote: Life is precious, people, live your life to the fullest and have as much fun as you can while living day to day.
I've always have issues when I order retro games from Gamestop. It's too bad GameStop doesn't take more effort to differentiate the conditions of the games they have for sale. I for one would be more inclined to order if I knew whether or not the game came w book & box or not.
Basically dont expect any disc ones to come CIB. I had that happen with the dreamcast stuff i ordered and i had to end up ordering replacement cases off ebay to make up for it.
I agree. As an exemployee it seemed strange to me that we had a button to differentiate between fine and defective but we could simply have a third to show in system that a game didn’t have the original box. Having a collection with a GameStop generic box in the middle is such a drag

And they get a C. Not biased at all. Also, you probably paid peanuts for crash bandicoot, it doesn't need a jewel case. And a "collector" isn't going to order sight unseen to begin with Other than that, and the obvious jealous contempt for GameStop you have, I give your video a C.
you ever hear of taking a chance. Maybe a collector is having a hard time finding a certain game in a given condition and decides to take some chances buying blind lol. If it doesn't work out they could always send them back.
Also for the record fuck game stop 😂 if youre defending gamestop then have no idea what business practices they implement. They harass customers, their cycle of life business plan fucks game developers, pre-order bullshit and grandmas buying games for little timmy are what keeps game stop in business.

Seriously good review of the review-er.
100% agree
and the prices looked really ok!
crash bandicoot was a free game. look at the invoice 2:39. he does come off as a douche.

He did briefly allude to that in the video.
Not to mention that disk rot will eventually take hold. :(
Justin Grimes does it affect the graphics, gameplay or game content?
it's 'sanded' down to the layer of the scratch
@Justin Grimes: Nothing wrong with resurfacing a disc to buff scratches out on disc, All data is behind the front label on the metallic surface anyways. As long a you can't see light through the disc should be okay. If you can see light through disc it is done forever and a coaster. None of my discs have scratches cause I always put games back in case after using. But, when I worked at a local family owned game store we would buff scratches out of discs for customers all the time and hardly ever had an issue. If really deep scratches we would try but tell customer if disc is done for It was not our problem (liability).

A jewel case is not much safer to "ship" a game. If the middle pins break down the disc can move all over the case and get scratched. Other reason is probably for storage. Jewel cases take way more inventory space than simple slips.

They should just invest in a Single CRT for each store to test older systems on would save money in the long run.
@@blarghts It's unlikely they would. They don't want to have to spend any money they don't have to.
This is true. I have a friend who got fired for taking jewel cases (that were put in trash) home to box his old collection.

$111 for all that? That’s such a rip off. Go to locally owned game stores if you can find one and you’ll get so much for $111
Unless you are lucky probably not since the "retro craze" hit. I used to dig through bins of games at shops or flea markets $1 a game and find hidden gems like rare games or first prints of games, etc. Now the same shops and flea market vendors have the same bins of games and want $10-15 a game and they've long since picked out any gems to sale separately for crazy mark up.
At my local game store Pokemon Yellow itself would cost $50.
Well idk what the shops around you guys are thinking. I got a heap of ps2 games, Pokémon gameboy games, and a Wii for $175
Whether or not any games would be a steal or not at smaller stores and flea markets, we can all agree that 99.9% of the time it's better prices than gamestop.
Maybe in your area. Over here, the chumps are selling mario duck hunt for 20$ and a boxed copy of smb2 for 50$.

“ THIS IS A BOX”
Trust me.
Gamestop in general doesn't care if anything you buy works. In store or not. I've gotten so much broken shit from them so I no longer from them.
GameStop knows who you are, they sent you their best stuff.
Spawn getting a lot of heat on this one!
Wrong. Those cases break very easily during shipment. Often times ps1 discs are very strong and will do much better just in a sleeve unless you like your games come with broken glass.
Literally never had a jewel case even crack on a purchase/sell. Common sense helps avoid it
The PS1 cases were frequently cracked on the shelf when they were new, I would always check them before buying.
Yep, thats how a disk doctor works... you've solved the most important and arcane secrets of the universe.

ReneeNme that was beautiful
GameStop puts the discs in the sleeve thing cuz if it’s in a case the game might fall out during shipping and get scratched.
thats not the case at all, if so even new games would fall out
In case*
I've always have issues when I order retro games from Gamestop. I've been buying Gamecube games around this time of year for the last three years or so now and I always have an issue with a game or two not reading. Honestly, I've had better luck ordering from Ebay. I'd rather take my chances there and I've have had more success lol. I'm surprised Gamestop doesn't get more slack for this. It seems to happen a lot. I've never bought a retro or refurbished console from them and I'm not sure if I should.
Really enjoyed this video! Subbed!
No one would buy them if they knew the quality was poor
@@Mashamazzi but if they priced the poor quality one's cheaper they could probably still move them. Their prices are more attractive than what you would pay on E-Bay.
@@Jokir4754 most people would still prefer to spend the extra to get the complete game/item
"So apparently GameStop sent me a box - Let me just open it with my hammer."

He seems like the type of guy to open a box with a hammer
Wait! GameStop mailed you your Cyber Monday order? I still haven’t gotten my Black Friday stuff from them yet! Lol
I got my black friday stuff from em about a week later.
I ordered a game on November 21st and it's suppose to arrive tomorrow... we'll see.
@@Randomninja47 aye my guy come back to this thread and tell us if it comes, I'm very interested in this and wont be able to sleep if I don't know.
Don't tell him. Let him suffer.
@@walkerlambert815 yeah don't
"This is a box" No Wayyyy.
Just found your channel today watched the video where you disassemble the wii U and now this video. Great content keep it up I'll be binging your library for a few days
Judging by the comments, a lot of people didn't understand the purpose of the video
No, people understand, he just worded it in a way that implied he ordered something similar to a loot box, when in fact he was already aware of what was inside. Given that he went through and showed the order list straight away though, I get the sense that he just misspoke.
So...you got a good ps2 controller, the Nintendo stuff was all legit and working, and you didn't try another game to see if it was possibly a decades old ps1 game and not the new looking system... And they get a C. Not biased at all.
Also, you probably paid peanuts for crash bandicoot, it doesn't need a jewel case. And a "collector" isn't going to order sight unseen to begin with
Other than that, and the obvious jealous contempt for GameStop you have, I give your video a C.
crash bandicoot was a free game. look at the invoice 2:39. he does come off as a douche.
He said in this very video that he tried another game in the PS1 and it still didn't work. Stay in school.
you ever hear of taking a chance. Maybe a collector is having a hard time finding a certain game in a given condition and decides to take some chances buying blind lol. If it doesn't work out they could always send them back.
He said he tried another game and it didnt read that one either.
Also for the record fuck game stop 😂 if youre defending gamestop then have no idea what business practices they implement. They harass customers, their cycle of life business plan fucks game developers, pre-order bullshit and grandmas buying games for little timmy are what keeps game stop in business. They are crooks and they use predatory practices. Essentially gamestop is a used car lot.
I ordered Super Mario Sunshine because it was much cheaper from GameStop than it was on eBay, and I was surprised to see it came with the case. Actually been pretty happy with retro orders from GameStop for the most part. It’s easy to return something if I’m not satisfied with the condition, and if you use it for mostly Cartridge games than you don’t really need the box with it.
You know who else (still) ships discs in sleeves.....Netflix.
Really I thought they stopped doing that
OPENS THE BOX WITH A HAMMER AS CASUALLY AS IF YOU WERE BUTTERING SOME BREAD...
Mike Time lmao if you were buttering some bread with a hammer
🍞🔨🤤
Expected clickbait... left with 20 minutes and 46 seconds of wholesome content
I have 2 playstation 1's so it's pretty cool seeing you get another one.
