The dot being stuck means the CMOS clock battery is out. The dot spinning is the internal clock. To replace the battery you need to take that PS2 apart.
It could also be the clock. Apparently the orb will slowly progress its movement depending on the time. Edit: When he booted it up, the PS2’s date was 1/1/2000 00:00, which could be the reason why it doesn’t move.
I was wondering why you say "its hard to not get any scratches on a disc this old".. then i saw you pile the discs up on top of each other around the 16 min mark.. and now i understand why. You would prlly be baffled by all my computer, ps, ps2, and xbox games that are still in pristine condition bc i simply handle them correctly lol.
I always put games back in cases as well, but that's not so easy to do when I'm holding a camera with one hand. Two hands are needed to put games back in those sleeves, which I could do but it's inconvenient to undo my camera strap to put every game away while using them in the video. The only games I've ever had scratching issues with are games I bought used
The reason the dot is not moving is because the button cell battery inside the PS2 is dead. The battery keeps the clock going when the system is unplugged. Just replace the battery, set the clock, and you should be good to go.
The orb isn't spinning because the internal coin battery which keeps the time is dead. Easy to replace but you will need to open it up. Once replaced set the tone and orbs will spin. I'd suggest cleaning the laser with some isopropyl alcohol and see if that helps. Also the laser mechanism might be slipping on the worm screw. You can look at other videos on how to adjust
I’ve got a silver one of these consoles that still runs perfectly today. Just re ordered The Simpsons Hit and Run and San Andreas again for it as I lost my discs for them.
The odd noise with certain discs can be caused by the disc tapping the stopper that comes out to stop the disc spinning when you open the lid. Mine did that with a few games, but when I taped the stopper down, the noise stopped and those games were less prone to locking up when loading.
@@TucBroder it depends on the model of the PS2. If you've got a slim, you can open the lid and look near the back just to the right of where the laser mechanism is, there's a little bit of plastic that's stuck out from the smooth plastic tray. Mine has a tiny little white rubber(?) patch where it touches and stops the disc. I think, while you can actually see it move if you watch it while tapping the open button on the console. It's not hard to find if you're looking for it, and it actually touches the outer rim of the discs when they're in the tray, so it makes it easy to spot against everything else in there. It does no harm to tape it back so it can't touch the discs anymore, you just have to wait for a disc to slow down on it's own when you open the tray to take it out.
I remember being mad at my dad back when he bought me a ps2 instead of the ps3 I was asking him for. Now I am grateful he didn't, and didn't make him return it because I still have it to this day.

My PS2 slim from 2006 is still in fantastic condition. Just finished the original Devil May Cry last week and it was great. That said, I still have the same clock and orb problem as you do but from what I read, it shouldn't really affect the console reading discs.
Until you manage to replace the CMOS battery on the motherboard, you may want to try setting the date anyway in the system settings (I think if you just select the date and press confirm that's enough), then you should be able to see the little orbs on the dash screen spinning. This was my experience at least when I bought a European PS2 model SCPH-75003 earlier in 2020. Of course, the date will still revert after power-down (or maybe only after mains power is lost?) until the dead battery is changed, but if you just want to see the orbs spinning, this is what you can do.

The dot in that first menu that spins in circles is tied to the consoles clock, if that’s not running than the clocks not running, the clock can be set and started in the system configuration.
The first mistake was buying the Slim. Those PS2 models were garbage. I unfortunately had 2 back in the day and eventually both broke in similar ways. The lid was the culprit each time.
You are correct. That dot is supposed to animate and there are supposed to be lots of them. From some reading, it not moving may be the CMOS battery (a battery on motherboards that enables the keeping of time and settings when there is no power to the board) is out of power
It's spinning around yes. This is because your batteri is dead. But you can fix it without replace the batteri. Go to system configuration and clock then press X and O together, and everything should be back to normal
That is the sound of the laser tapping on your disc when it cannot properly focus. Do NOT continue using your discs, because it will eventually create a double-ring scratch. This is due to the laser being pushed up and down in order to focus, and in doing so, the two plastic retaining clips that keep the laser eye in place hits the disc. The disc speed is also changed during this process, again to find the right combination of speed and focus. You can verify all this by opening up the console and taping down the two "cover-is-closed" switches (on by the power button and the other is under the leg of the cover door by the PS2 logo on the top) and watching the red light under the disc. This is an issue with probably ALL slim models (except possibly the ones where the laser assembly is screwed down). You can try to fix it by adjusting the potentiometers underneath the laser eye. This adjusts the voltage for the laser and may help improve its ability to focus, thereby stopping the optics head from moving up/down and hitting the disc. Make sure you have a multimeter to check the resistance at the potentiometers to ensure they are set within the proper range, because using wrong values could very well cause the diode to burn up. This is a temporary fix (how long will it last? who knows...) and even a brand new replacement laser will eventually have this problem. For slim PS2s, look into Free DVD Boot and make yourself an FMCB memory card. From there, take an old router that has NAS support via USB drives (the router must of course have USB ports) and set up a network share -- I use an old ASUS RT-N66 and use Open PS2 Loader to stream your games.
I never knew why this always happened to me when I was a kid and now I know it was always only the ps2 slim. Like it happened to me all the time one game would load perfectly fine and the other wouldn't work. I thought it was just a piece of junk thanks for the info cause I never knew 😂

You should press and hold the power button then change the game disk. You shouldn't tap the power button which is mean restart then open the disk tray because when restarting the ps2 wont stop spinning the disk inside. So suddenly restart and open the disk tray may damage the disk motor. Take a good care of this legendary ps2.
The reason why the orbs are not spinning is because the CMOS battery in the ps2 slim is dead, meaning that the console can't tell the time and date anymore, this happens with both ps2 fat and slim
That is definitely not like new at all! Should of returned it! I’m selling a much better condition one currently on amazon which still had the plastic wrap on the glossy part.
Back in the day we had 2 second hand ps2 slims and both had the same problems with weird noises and disc tray /reading disc problems. It also gave red screen a couple of times.
the issue with the orbs are not spining because from the CMOS battery that keep the time running after you unplug the the power you need to open that ps2 and change the battery and thats it I do it myself and its working great
@@jrob0021 hey man mine was doing the same thing. Set the date on your settings. I set up my current date and when I went back to the menu the orbs and music started to play. me who doesnt have a ps2: interesting
I have been thinking about selling mine now that I have a PS5. It is in better shape than the one you have. With all packaging mint. Sigh. Might keep it just because I feel so attached to it even though I'm not using it. :)
I'm looking for one if your interested in selling it
I'll buy it💁♀️ then I have one spare😅
Don't ever sell your old consoles unless you really need money.
Slim 9000xx models cuz solid network port great for smb and its softmoded thx to funtuna still have a pi hooked up to my slim ps2 with a 1tb ssd runing like 300+ games off of it runs silky smooth and crispy image from component cable
You should press and hold the power button then change the game disk. You shouldn't tap the power button which is mean restart then open the disk tray because when restarting the ps2 wont stop spinning the disk inside. So suddenly restart and open the disk tray may damage the disk motor. Take a good care of this legendary ps2.
i love your videos you made my 2020 awesome
My childhood in one video
Yeah my is ps3 and xbox 360
@@Windows-rx7qn me too
The reason why the orbs are not spinning is because the CMOS battery in the ps2 slim is dead, meaning that the console can't tell the time and date anymore, this happens with both ps2 fat and slim
That is definitely not like new at all! Should of returned it! I’m selling a much better condition one currently on amazon which still had the plastic wrap on the glossy part.
Happy 2021 Jacob R
Back in the day we had 2 second hand ps2 slims and both had the same problems with weird noises and disc tray /reading disc problems. It also gave red screen a couple of times.
the issue with the orbs are not spining because from the CMOS battery that keep the time running after you unplug the the power you need to open that ps2 and change the battery and thats it I do it myself and its working great
Best youtuber ever
I agree I really love unboxing
About the orbs, it's the internal battery wich regulates the clock that died. It's normal after all that time
I think the swirling logo only starts once you have game saves on the memory card. Save a game and see what happens.
Yeah I saved a couple games and it was still like that. I read that it's because there's a dead battery In the console that keeps the clock running
@@jrob0021 It is the battery
@@jrob0021 every console have an 3v battery, you simply must change it
@@jrob0021 Maybe try changing your
year from 2000 to 2004 or later. On the PS2's time settings.
@@jrob0021 hey man mine was doing the same thing. Set the date on your settings. I set up my current date and when I went back to the menu the orbs and music started to play. After unplug you console from any power source and plug it back and turn it on again. If the orbs are not moving it means that your internal clock battery needs to be replaced. Hopes this helps
Ok I dunno what a “LIKE NEW” is but I still *like* this system
If the light is still in the main menu, you have no clock that works on the system
Is the ps2 slim really that small
@@Windows-rx7qn yes it is
Hi I love your vids I haven’t watched your videos in a while
I have gta San andreas on ps2 it’s complete in box.
Same here. I also have GTA 3 and Vice City complete aswell :) I bought them on ebay and they came in a used bundle with all 3 strategy guides for each game
Who asked?
@@lordmegatron65 my local Wal-Mart had 3 of the bundles in 2019 brand new, but for $20. They're still clean without scratches
@@Marsalona Joe Mama
The light is not spining in the main menu of the PS2 means that the internal 3volt battery is dead : you must replace it and the light will spin again.
I still never eaten a ps2 slim if it's a slim It will be easier to eat
C'mon man, the ps3 slim was much tastier......

The Destroy All Humans game had a deep scratch on it which is why the music was messing up and it didn't even load the second time you tried it
I wish I was as rich as you dude, what with all these consoles you buy off Ebay and GameStop 😄
Maybe it's because I live in Europe but 0 problems with consoles on ebay we take good care of stuff in general

Check all your connections and your memory card. It's happened to me. Also this will happen if your disk is slightly warped.
Finally, take a hand vac and vac the area where you place your disk, not to close.
Good luck
Sounds like the laser needs to be cleaned.
it could be a disc problem with fixing worn out game discs too.
Slim has a problem of scratching up your ps2 disc, I prefer the fat version
8:54 is sitting there because of dead battery
I found that out later in the vid
@@jrob0021 oh OK
@@jrob0021 i must of not watched the vid far enough lol
@@unlined_sardine7426 yeah it was like the last thing I said in the video lol. Like in the last minute or 2
Mine used to do this when loading games. Its dried up grease on laser track. This causes laser worm gear to jump and grind. Remove laser unit and clean with IPA. Fresh grease will solve this problem. Different games/developers read from different areas on disc once anti piracy section has been read. While your in there replace clock battery and clean fan.
Why did he say, weird 2001 sports game😭
Had me dead
Cuz sports suck
Just saying, that ligh stays because the cmos battery were dead, replace it with cr2032 disc battery. Or else you won't able to save your device settings
Bet you $10 GTA 3 is in there lol
