- As this generation is coming to a close I wanted to look back at the original Xbox One that released back in 2013, specifically how it was built. The overall build quality of the Xbox One was actually pretty good and Microsoft seemed to go over the top with the size of the system to make sure the failure rate was much lower than the Xbox 360. I decided to order a Refurbished one from GameStop as well to take a look at what they were selling.

It's the Phantom Black controller and is actually updated with Bluetooth and a headphone jack, which the original Xbox One controller wasn't

This is why I'm glad Phil took over. The company is finally turning around thanks to him.
When Phil took the wheel he steered the ship in the right direction but by that point it was too late to save this generation. Everything he really has done has been setting up and preparing for the next generation.
Not that there was much he could really have done by the time he took over but even with Phil if you bought an Xbox One you kinda got screwed over.

I have both a PS4 and Xbone and I throughly enjoy both.
If a lot of third party titles were exclusive to Playstation, then I could see Xbox players being "screwed over".
The over reliance on the Kinect and charging 100 more was a bad call. As was cancelling Scalebound. That game looked really sweet and was from Platinum games too. 🙁
EDIT: I guess it depends on your "flavor" when it comes to the exclusives. Both consoles have some good ones, but I don't think every exclusive released on either platform is a slam dunk sotospeak.

@@JJAB91 not really, i have both consoles and there's pros and cons of both systems. Saying this generation of xbox was a total failure is just ignorant, they fucked up but they've made great strides to redeem themselves. Ps4 won this generation but xbox made a huge comeback

that is a phantom black controller. my brother bought one of those when they first came out. They were originally a special edition controller and cost 75.99 before tax.

For the most part, that is true. Though I would have appreciated it if the Xbox didn't share its exclusives with PC. That is my only major pet peeve with the Xbox. Aside from that, Phil Spencer's definitely helped the Xbox brand out.

I was dumbfounded by Don Mattrick said that during his interview with Geoff. It was one of the most tone deaf remarks from a company trying to convince people on the then-current generation to upgrade. It makes me wonder if that led to his eventual departure from the company. Xbox really started off this generation several laps down in the race to get into gamers' homes.
Fuck Don Mattrick, really the Xbox One launch was awful, but his interviews and mentality made it 2x worse than it could have been.

Ferna_Postales ps4 when offline isn’t as user friendly as Xbox 360 offline I own an Xbox one X and that is also not as user friendly as the 360 but not as bad as PS4

The reason why that design had so much free space and a large fan was because they expected people to keep in on all the time - having their cable box tethered to the console.
I literally keep mine on 24/8 and basically have continually since 2015
Out of 5 X360s I've used in my house, I've seen zero red ring failures. All of mine were cleaned regularly and sat in open entertainment centers with wired Cat5 to them. So my results were maybe an outlier. Bottom line, I replaced all of those X360s with XBones (original, S, and X) with no issues years later. I used SSDs externally on all of them, and still love the whole set for family gaming and my travel gaming.
2:11 That is kind of funny now since they actually started years ago locking some content behind online with you needing Plus to access some of those features/content of even single player games.
Microsofts really shot themselves in the foot with this launch, and im positive Sony re-wrote their presentation to completely take advantage of it. Getting easy aplause for features literately every console before it had. And then they abused their lead by restricting accounts Only to their platform, not letting hardly anyone play with PS4 players (notice now at the end of its life, sony is opening it up to try to win points for ps5).
After the Xbox 360 and Xbox one, PlayStation doesn't need points to compete or gain consumers. The PlayStation always delivers a quality console with very little issues and is actually superior. And it's player base is 2 times as big as Xbox at the moment. PlayStation will outsell Xbox at launch, again. And if Xbox doesn't keep up this time, and actually do more than PlayStation next time around, they will never catch up. And at this point , that's fine with me.

Let's see their customer service sucks, oh their lame controller light that drains the battery quickly, oh their consoles break faster than most xbox consoles(not always but I've generally noticed my friends have gone through several gaystations) so Sony sells more cause they break faster. Controller isn't very good for gripping compared to xbox's controller. Generally louder and more obnoxious, overheating issues are more common though not always, and made from cheaper thinner plastic yes sir where can I sign up to have my freedom taken away to play with other consoles. My 360 outlasted most of my friends ps3's and it still works.
I understand Xbox isn't perfect, but Sony sorta sold its fan boys a nice good butt fucking and that's how they like it. Enjoy your anal Sony soy boy. And yes me and my friends have dealt with customer support on both sides, and Microsoft at least has that in the bag.

How well does the SSD impact loading times? I thought about getting one.
@@Sherolox SSDs are generally 5 times faster than normal HDDs. An average HDD has read speeds of up to 100MB/s whereas SSDs can do 500-700MB/s.
@@Sherolox as a new computer gamer I will say SSD is crazy fast. As soon as I click on an application it opens right then and there or at least 1 second after I press it. Especially Google Chrome as it does take a lot of resources, but opens within a second
Considering the PS4 installing each game on its hard drive and after reading the other’s replies, I take a SSD would boost the loading times considerably.

Crazy thing is, I have the OG XBox One and never did I say to myself, “this thing is underpowered.” And I don’t like mid gen systems because you will be less wowed going from a One X to a Series X. But for me going from the OG to the Series X will be insane.🤯

John Mecca That's because both consoles were underpowered. The PS4 was just slightly stronger, allowing its ports to be higher frame rate/resolution in some instances.
The difference wasn't anything noteworthy, but when you're buying a system, to play the same games, most people would get the version that runs the game slightly better, even if it's not as noticeable. Especially at that launch period, where you were paying an additional $100 to get the version that was at a lower resolution/frame rate.
I'm here with my 2013 Xbox one and never think about other versions out there, I'm just happy it isn't dying like the 3 360's I had. Only had controller issues that I found cheap parts for
What about Star Wars Jedi of the Fallen Order? I saw the Digital Foundry analysis and there seems to be a lot of loading and stuttering on base Xbox One.

My ps4 pro sounds like a jet airplane taking off. Now my one x is extremely QUITE in comparison.
Especially that darn disk drive. It’s sound will follow me into my nightmares. It’s not scary, just so darn loud.

I had two ps4s cos the one I got at launch was just really crap. I ended up finally properly cleaning it and the noise is completely gone. I sold it for over 100 I recommend you do the same if you don't use it.
Just open it up and clean both sides. Its Easy and mine went from being unbearably loud to not hearing it at all and unless its dead quiet i have to look to see if its even on. It was CAKED with dust inside and took great care alot but lived in a hot upstairs for the first half year i got it at launch. All you have todo is wipe it down clean, hope you didnt chuck it or use this as a bad reason to miss exclusives. Much much Easier than taking apart the ps3 especially for just cleaning

That's probably the cleanest looking Xbox One (inside) I've ever seen, usually caked in dust and roach carcasses so "refurbished" must have just meant "cleaned thoroughly".
Still using my Xbox One day one edition to this day. This thing just won't quit, I have had absolutely zero problems with it. Microsoft really has stepped up their quality.
The controller is actually pretty new! Phantom series was launched this year literally if I am not wrong.

So while xbox live had features that the ps2 and ps3 didnt have like voice chat, essentially microsuck were the only ones charging for online multiplayer for over a decade until sony and nintendo decided greed was more important than their customers. I had OG Xbox as a kid. Never got to experience online (because I was a kid with no money) and they charged for retarded attachments like a DVD remote, otherwise your XBox didn't play DVDs. And you also had to buy an attachment so you could get online (which you still had to pay).
Switching to PS3 was the easiest gaming decision I ever made.
And for some reason PS2 players switched to XB360???

Modern Yin anything from MS that is a console is always gonna be what would be a very budget pc lmao,and their heat sink source is not a good one (cheap) like the rest of the build materials they use. Just open any xbox and you immediately see the mostly empty cases with really cheap budget hardware,always worth a laugh.

Yeah after working at GameStop I can tell you right out the gate we never sent them anywhere. We would wrap them up clean them up remove all stickers including the warranty and shove them in a box just like that told by corporate say they were refurbished..
I have a feeling that Sony is probably going to regret the easy street they have had with the PS4. The 0 competition for the PS4 gave investors an inflated idea of PlayStation's performance. Now that Microsoft and Nintendo are more on demographic I can imagine PS5 is going to struggle compared to PS4.
Especially when sony wants to make playstation gamers move faster and really quick to ps5, it will definitely fit that narrative

@@epsilonsmind4803 Well PS1 and PS2 were pretty dominant. While the PS3 slipped the trend I think PS4 made investors feel like things were back on track. The problem I see is that PS4 didn't really innovate, so PlayStation doesn't have much to build on. XBox seemed to know that years ago and while PlayStation was struggling to keep a head of 3rd party relations, XBox bought most of their third parties. The PS5 might actually sell worse than the PS3 over it's lifetime.

I don’t see Sony struggling at all with the PS5 because Sony learned their lesson with the PS3. As for innovation none of the next gen console need to they just have to supply gamers with good games and more importantly good exclusive games.

I gave my original Xbox One to my niece. She's playing a lot of Sims 4.
All though the PS4 was my first Console for this Gen. I eventually got a Xbox One, and i noticed how quiet it was compared to my PS4.
My PS4 was a jet engine. So i cut a hole on top to make it breath more, and that's how i reduced the noise. But i only touch my PS4 for Exclusives, the rest i play on my Xbox One X.
I hope Sony do a better job on the PS5. The cooling was very bad. Especially on the Pro.
Microsoft basically over engineered the Xbox systems.

@@GlitchedPepsi It was already loud when i bought it. Apparently i wasn't the only one. When my launch PS4 died earlier this year, i got a Pro, which was even louder. I exchanged it 6 times, and all of them had the exact same issue. So i eventually settled with a PS4 Slim which is quieter.
I clean my stuff thoroughly every month. I don't shove my stuff into a corner, its right next to my TV.

I've had my original Xbox One since the end of 2015 and it still works great. Never had any issues with it. The only time I've even noticed it getting hot was after I booted up the Anthem open demo a while back. For whatever reason, that game was a little much for it.

I'm still incredibly salty as I'm one of those people that bought a "VCR" XBone back on Black Friday
2014. Little did I know shortly thereafter we would get the S.
And of course years after that we get the much better X.
Now even though I know I can go and get an X for $350 I feel like it's worth holding off. It's less than a year now till the new consoles and I haven't bought a pro yet either.
I have the old VCR so I appreciate this video in case I ever need to clean it sometime or do repairs. Instead of upgrading consoles I just bought a 4tb external Hard Drive. Oh regret.

Back when I worked at Fry's Electronics we sold these. In my time there they had a 100% (one-hundred percent) failure rate.
So I wonder if the internal HD can just be switched out to a larger GB SSD if the data is transferred to the new drive.

After having the xbone and the ps4 I didn't feel a big enough difference between them that made me want to give one up. I loved them both and I think I'll feel the same with the new gen.
Those gloss plastic bits were the bane of my life when I actually wanted to clean the damn thing, seemed like anything would scratch it

I got the 500 GB model of the One in 2014, right after GTA V was released for it. I got it for $125 from my financially-irresponsible stepbrother, with 2 plain black controllers, GTA V, a Madden game, and Call of Duty: Ghosts, as well as an HDMI and the power adapter.
No real story here I guess, except that I got this console for how much it was actually worth... lol

I still have an original Xbox from the elite bundle when they introduced the elite controller, it still runs great, do you know if that elite bundled console is any different then this one?
I have an original xbox one that is black screened. My kid had the hard drive full and since there was no space it auto updated and now doesnt work. Any advice? I tried hard reset and also tried the flash drive thing too.

Man, you showed me something I havent seen for years, and glad I'm not working with these anymore. When I worked at IBM, in Bromont Canada, I tested some of the CPU that got out of there. We got rid of many defective chips or we had chips with either missing balls or lost balls.
Fun fact, they were tested on modified Xbox 360 boards. I saw the Xbox logo so much on to of the screens that I became sick of seeing it for the next 5 years.
I've been a PS fan for a lifetime but just got a One X and is a fantastic neat system. Definetively interested in making the Series X my workhorse for next gen

Squeaky trigger can be easily fixed by adding a bit of oil (canola oil should be fine) with q-tip. I had that problem with controller that came with One X.
My local EB games shut down recently (only one in town). It was next to Walmart.
gamestop tends to sand glossy parts or plastic in general that is scratched .. i saw some people get switches from gamestop and the backs where sanded to hide scratches etc .. lol

I still use my Xbox one H5 limited edition from 2015 and I still haven’t upgraded yet
I had this model, sounded good, looked great on the inside. When connected to the internet it would screech at an ungodly pitch and never stop till you unplugged the power. Would 10/10 recommend testing the internet on the thing before saying it seems great. Not trying to say anything about the video, love your videos!

They have really turned it around as a company. The fact they are willing to port pc version of their games over to steam now is amazing to me. Also how the PS4 Pro is louder then my stronger gaming laptop when its fans are turned up to max rpm.

With the new xbox and how its designed it would be good if it can hold multiple discs it will store them inside on an internal shelf and it keeps track of what discs are stored inside it and you can select what game you want to play from a disc select menu
I honestly think the case has two main portions to it. The bottom half is all the components and the top half is just a gigantic fan about as wide as the console itself.

Hardware-wise the XBone blows the PS4 out on both the console build and the controller IMO. The fact that MS is allowing the XBone controllers to work on the Series X is a big positive to me. It's just a shame that Sony has such an amazing exclusive library that will likely carry over to the PS5.

I’m in to taking my game consoles apart and fixing them but where should I start if I know nothing about internal hardware? For now I’d just like to take the shells off my joycons for the switch so any advice would be great
There is a channel the guy shows you how to repair consoles... And his videos are pretty clean and detailed oriented... For Joycons specifically just watch one oF Spawn Wave older videos...
The only thing you need for the joycons is a tri-tip screwdriver. The inside of a joycon is pretty simple. It's a batterypack sitting on top of a piece of plastic.the plastic separates the batterypack from the board. Once you unscrew all of that you should have full acess to the stick (reconnecting the stick to the board can be a bit annoying tho if you have big hands)
I just bought a broken one (update e101) so fingers crossed it comes in good condition and it will work with the new and prepared hdd I have ready to install when the console arrives!
I'm finished with Xbox forever. I liked my 360 well enough, but Sony is my go-to platform now (and Nintendo for Nintendo games), and occasionally PC (I prefer physical over digital, but there are good digital exclusive games, some of which Sony never sells). There is literally no purpose for an Xbox when PC is superior and that's all Xbox is trying to emulate.

( i work at gamestop)the issue with refurbished systems is that when we send them to the warehouse to be fixed there is no accountability when someone works on em theres no quality control, while if we keep it in store from a system where there is nothing wrong if when we go to sell it and then find something wrong we are held accountable, I don’t personally ever recommend people buying refurbished systems due to the fact there’s no accountability on weather it will actually work and due to that there’s usually something still wrong with em
This honestly might be my old xbox one. I say this because when I traded mine in they said 1st party power bricks are fairly rare to come by and the refurbished/replacements were essentially the same problems
