  • Folk Tales of Durian, a gigantic sweet and stinky cheers with my wife, and a time to sit down and savor one last moment around the buffet table - its been a great trip to Indonesia, and there's just one more thing to do in Indonesia, one last way we want to spend our final few hours here.
The entire experience of durian in Indonesia is amazing. This is not "just" a fruit, and of course we have durian in Thailand, but the way Indonesia treats this beautiful and natural wonder is just something I appreciate so much! I love how approachable, how affordable, how plentiful!! Although 'Nasi Goreng' fried rice and 'Rendang' could each rightfully be called the National Food of Indonesia,* I vote that DURIAN could just as easily be there in a three-way standoff to represent the amazing country it calls home.
*There is no single national dish of Indonesia (some sources say there are 5 National Dishes)
**The tale of the Tiger and the Durian is the story I talk about in this video (from a book)
***The Medan Magnet seems to be a well-known local legend, I did not see anything written down from this one :)
Stay tuned for a few videos from Thailand before I start the series in Karnataka, India! I thank you for all the messages and comments, and the encouragement you send my way.
Have a wonderful day today, a big durian cheers from both Li and myself.
See you for the next adventure!

Matt!! Ha, just replied to your comment on the “Live”… hey man, well Durian is definitely gonna be an experience! Nothing quite like it :) I have had a quite decent frozen durian (which is fresh in Thailand, frozen to be shipped, then sold at a big market store in the USA), it was surprisingly not bad at all, AND the same price as here 😂 but if you have a fresh one, obviously, choose that one

one thing you need to know about durian, we cannot choose whether we will like or hate the taste of durian because durian is the one who chooses who can eat it, there are only 2 possibilities for people who eat durian, either they will really enjoy it or they will couldn't eat it at all

Hi Joel, tigers DO love durian. My father has seen in Malaysia a tiger waiting near a durian tree and quickly rushing in and pulling away any durian that falls to the ground. Then, using its sharp claws, it opened the durian and sucked up the segments. It then put the seeds in a neat pyramid. So if you are in the jungle and see a neat pile of durian seeds nearby, better run for your life 😅

Durian is best fruit in my country..but not for me eat durian fruit because strong smell aroma durian..but I prefer processed food rather than the fruit directly, you have to try durian ice cream in Indonesia, street food is very delicious, if you know your family doesn't like the smell of durian, it's too strong to make you dizzy, this might be one of the best solutions for you to try. durian

I had friends who owned a durian orchard. They knew when they were ripe by the appearance. The tips of the spikes turn darker when ripe. The grandmother was an expert. She walked us through the orchard one time. She'd point at a durian way up in the tree, and say, "That one's almost ready.
Before cutting open they tested by tapping the durian with a piece of rubber on the end of a stick. When durian is ripe, the fruit separates from the skin. When you tap the fruit, it will make a hollow sound. I used to be able to tell the difference in sound between ripe and unripe, but it's been so long it'll probably sound the same to me now.
All the durian I've bought in recent years has already been packaged. I like the softer durian, so I look for the deeper color. Harder durian is much lighter in color, and is less pungent than the creamier stuff.

MyThai, I have missed your very insightful comments!! Wow, yes this grandmother sounds incredible, she must have had just decades of experience being so close to this one special fruit, wow. Saibaidee Joel! You know my feelings about durian but I still enjoy watching you and Li loving it. The tiger story was interesting. I'd definitely choose a durain as a weapon of defense. If the spikes don't hurt 'em, the smell will! Haha.

HaHA!!! I didn't even think about that, oh man... and I guess the story I read didn't mention it either?! That's kinda funny, now that you bring it up, the smell is almost painful for some people, why didn't the tigers mind that part? Very interesting :)

They say that you either love or hate durian, there’s nothing in between. But I’m exactly that; I don’t mind it but I don’t go looking for it.
My family likes to drive out to the rural areas where the durian trees grow naturally Indonesia, it’s something very local and traditional for us. This way of thinking is why despite we’re being a larger country, Indonesia is losing out to Malaysia big time where they keep on coming with new cultivars of durians and cater to the huge Chinese tourist market.
Glad you and the missus enjoyed some sort of a durian party in North Sumatra, hope you guys enjoyed your time in our country Indonesia! 🍻

Hey Kilan man!!! Well, my dad likes durian sometimes, just a few bites, and my brother in law as well, just so-so... so they would be with you!! haha, right on the fence, waiting for the perfect durian!!

Imagine.... me the only one in my family who doesn't like durian. When my family have durians party, I am hiding in my room. When I was young, I could handle the smell, and I love watching my dad cutting durians. But as I am getting older, I get dizzy more easily when I smell it.
But it is very hard to find it in Germany and very expensive, €15 for 400gr. Once, I bought it to celebrate my friend's birthday, she is from USA. So...my housemates (2 Germans, 1 Spaniard, 1 American), none of them like it... 😂
I told them to mix it with vanilla ice cream. I could handle half of a small cup durian ice cream. But still they were struggling, in the end we couldn't finish it. So I gave it to my Indonesian friends.
There were several news of "gas leak" in Germany but after further investigation, it was only durian smell...😂

durian culture between thai VS other asian country is so much different apart.
thai prefer unripe durian, which most expert durian eater consider unripe durian is failed durian, they call it cassava durian
thai typical durian is very full of meat, sweet but lack of umami, fragrance, smell, bitterness. the very difference you can feel is the after eating effect, thai durian wont stay on your finger and wont lastlong lingering in mouth
thai durian is suitable for beginner durian eater
thai durian price is so insanely high.
among south east asian country, malaysia have the best durian in term of R&D.
each durian can be classified clearly, so you can choose which profile suit your preference
indonesian durian mostly random flavor, the seller cant particularly define. its random

Durian as a weapon? Maybe you imagined it'll be great to replace iron ball on a flail, right?😅
I imagined that if durian flail cracked open I would it it after the war ends, if it's still edible tho. Yeah, durian may have side effect bc it has fat, protein, and vitamins even some minerals in a huge amount which is unreal for fruit standard. Idk how it rises body temp but it is what it is actually. Strange but true fact.

    • @JoelsTastyRide
      @JoelsTastyRide  3 месяца назад

Hey Gideon!! Yes actually both things you mentioned are true. This is an extremely healthy fruit, but it also does have unique properties (raising blood pressure, also blocks alcohol digestion, the two together causing problems for elderly). very rare for a fruit to be so powerful!! :)

    • @GideonicGaming
      @GideonicGaming 3 месяца назад

@@JoelsTastyRide that's why I always eat it moderately. I don't like it's fragrance but I like it's both texture as well as unique taste. Sometimes it's a fruit, sometimes it's a cheese, sometimes it's bland. I think durian is like a flavor slot machine.😅😆
