Sorry but she deserves to be free & possibly meet her mother & other pod members. 50 years is enough! Whether she lives another 10 or 20 years or 1 or 2 in the ocean it's better than not being able to swim free of concrete walls. Play recordings of her pod & see how she reacts, if she doesn't remember them then maybe sending her to SeaWorld is the better option, but I bet she remembers all too well.

This guy may be smart, but also I don't agree with his message at all. We need to let Toki live out the rest of her life in a natural environment. It's torture otherwise. It's infuriating hearing this. Does he want her living in concrete walls ALONE for the rest of her life? It's absolutely ridiculous. I realize that this guy has close and personal relationship with Toki, but this is NOT the environment that she needs to spend the rest of her life in. Her new home IS the sanctuary. And hopefully she'll find her mother and pod one day...
Look at the Beluga Whales who are living in sanctuaries now... they are doing just fine.

Toki is the equivalent of an 80 year old lady. Did you even watch the interview? She would not survive the attempt at release - THAT would be torture for her. She would get sick from EVERY germ she comes across, and at her age, that is a death sentence.
Worse: She does not even know her relatives! And those relatives are struggling already. The southern population is in decline - and Toki would bring germs with her that they haven't ever encountered. Their few calves would be the first to get sick and die. It would wipe out the southern population.

Concerned about the potential illness she could have found in a ocean pen where she could at least hear her mother one last time before dying, then she dies in her oh-so-safe pool less than two months from the interview. Talk about cruel irony. With reports that the under feeding and wrong practices made her sick and mad at the end. Because of a staff member who used to work for sea world allegedly not wanting to feed her as she was before. In a green pool in isolation. Solitary confinement is never better than getting to experience her home or hearing her mom even in occasional visits. But ofcourse, no mention of her insurance policy. How coincidental that she dies before getting to go home.

It was a money making thing and they made it apparent they were not going to provide her with a bigger pool. I think she may have done well in a sea pen as long as she had round the clock care. As far as having more space. They should not be in captivity and the least they could’ve done for her is provide her with a pool twice that size…. I hope she did receive love from her caretakers and they at least treated her with love and gave her affection, she surely didn’t not have the adequate space for a animal that size. Brilliantly and eloquently said. Dr. Michael S. Renner is a kind, compassionate, and highly experienced marine mammal veterinarian. He is one of the best in the world. He has dedicated his professional life to making sure that every marine mammal in human care gets the best medical care possible. Everything he says here needs to be shared widely and digested. As a marine mammal radiologist, I have also been working with marine mammals for decades (25 years) and can confirm that what he says is true, and based in reality. This reality is based entirely on what's best for (1) this individual whale, and (2) the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale population in the Pacific Northwest.

@@oatsmcgoats8493 wow… I can’t believe what I just read. You just described the ocean (the ancestral home of orcas) as being cold, lonely and dark to them… I can’t actually believe that level of stupidity…. Orcas have spent thousands of years adapting to living in an ocean environment, the same ocean environment Toki lived in for 4 years before her capture. Yes, she isn’t used to it as of now but she is literally primed to adapt to it. You’ve also spread misinformation here, it’s been confirmed that 2-3 pacific white sided dolphins will accompany her including her current tank mate. So she’ll have THE EXACT same company she currently has but in her natural waters where she’ll have more space, natural enrichment and the same round the clock care. You’re making bold and baseless assumptions by saying she won’t know how to interact with wild orcas (which by the way- isn’t the plan anyway). No one knows fully how she will react so don’t assume. As for diseases- yes that is a risk, but guess what? Her current environment IS making her ill. Captive cetaceans frequently suffer illnesses rarely seen in the wild but that consideration wasn’t, and still isn’t, taken into account when they’re taken into captivity.

The boaters were even at one point told to ignore him! He did make contact with a pod possibly his, however as per the scientist that were there when this momentarily momentous moment happened there was a very strategic approach from the pod to Kieko however complete silence!
Which begs the question on how else these amazing creatures communicate! But I digress he did not leave with them! He chose his human companions however less of them he had at that moment!
I actually started a Free Kieko petition at my junior high back then. However I honestly believed that the Marine Biologists & Orca Research Specialist were going to have more of a say in his “release” & what exactly that meant! Even then at the age of 14 I had been studying the research on the Orca long enough to know that he more than likely wasn’t such a great candidate for reintegration with his pod! The transition from tank water to seawater should take place as gradual as possible via the estuary. She is 100 percent welcome to choose her tank. She could choose the "sea pen" though. We move her dolphin friend and all of her water as well. If I had my druthers I would even close the road and cancel all other flights during her transport.
