  • Support for Tokitae’s release has come from across the world in recent years- with celebrities like Cher even joining in.
Yet, a vocal group of people, some of the people closest to her including former trainers and veterinarians, are now speaking out against her release.
“I spent 18 years with her, that is a 35% of my life... forming such an incredible love and bond with this animal,” said Heather Keenan, manager of animal training at the Miami Seaquarium from 1999 to 2016.
“She leaves an impression on everybody that meets her, said Marnie Wood, also a former manager of animal training at the Miami Seaquarium. "Even people that see her for a minute or two. She is truly a unique and special animal."

Former trainer's, MARNIE WOODS, reasons to want to keep this living intelligent enslaved:
    1. She spent 18 yrs with her, ie 35% of her, the trainer's life.
    2. She formed a bond, according to her (nvm it had no choice given it is confined and dependent on them for survival).
    3. She trusts it with her child (poor kid).
    4. Her child loves killer whales bc they have one confined that she can force to entertain her child.
    5. She loved getting to intoduce her newborn baby to it despite that it is being deprived of its family and home to make that happen for Marnie.
Her fellow trainer's, HEATHER KEENAN, take: "i don't think it is in her, the killer whale's, best interest. I FEEL LIKE it is what ppl think is in her best interest .. what ppl feel in some virtuous moment, TO MAKE THEM FEEL GOOD. But its not looking out for this animal's best interest."
Is Heather talking about herself and Marnie? The lack of self awareness is astounding .... the only reasons they are angry is bc they dont want to lose what makes THEM, the trainer's, feel good. All the reasons they give as an argument to keep her are about making them feel good 🤔 .... and the other ppl want the killer whale to be reunited with its own kind and free in the home to which it belongs.
They do not know the difference between selfish and selfless???

And she had the nerve to insinuate the public is pushing for her release so we can feel good about ourselves. No lady, we are imagining spending 50+ years in a bathtub sized room and have actual empathy, this is why we're pushing for it. They say she's afraid of other animals, OK, so don't put other animals in the holding pen with her?? They also say she wouldn't handle being dumped cold turkey in the cove, when they know that there are a series of pens that prepare the orca over months for the eventual relocation. If the objective experts (not any of the people in this video) feel her health is deteriorating during this process, then she's not going to be forced into the cove.

@@wallabygoose3943 i agree with you. I do not know how anyone, knowing what we know now, could advocate keeping these magnificent creatures isolated from THEIR families in, as you say, a bathtub to perform for very loud audiences which they do bc they want to eat .... using food/fish to get them to do tricks is so sad to me. The whole thing is sad .... and these trainers in this vid are the worst ... very selfish ppl. The Miami Seaquarium staff and ownership should be ashamed of themselves. I live in Seattle but have family in Miami. Last year, I took my nephews to the Seaquarium thinking, "it's by the ocean, it's in Florida...certainly it's gonna be one of the best aquariums in the USA...right?" WRONG. THE MIAMI SEAQUARIUM IS A PRISON FOR SEA CREATURES. Dolphins, orcas, manatees, etc. swimming in circles in tiny cylindrical tanks with absolutely no semblance of their native habitats (at least some zoos *attempt* to replicate land animal habitats!). Just tanks with white walls (and apparently peeling paint, which makes it even worse). Trainers treating dolphins like show horses for tourists who couldn't be bothered to think twice about what they were watching. They made those dolphins and orcas perform shows while blasting Van Halen and KISS over the speakers. The park itself was neglected and most of the exhibits were closed. Huge waste of money. If the administration can't even keep the park in decent condition, why should we trust them to know what's best for Tokitae?
This story is beginning to really frustrate me. There is absolutely no way that Tokitae is happy where she is, and the doctor and team suggesting that the Miami Seaquarium is her "home" are psychotic and untrustworthy. At best, she has a relationship with her handlers because those are the only friends she has and she is trying to make the most of being in prison. The hubris of people who think holding animals captive is what's best for them... Orcas are highly intelligent and I know Tokitae will be absolutely overcome with joy and relief if she's returned to the Pacific/Salish region where she belongs. If Tokitae is returned, even in the very worst possible scenario where she doesn't adjust well, at least she will be in her real home. I do, however, believe Tokitae will adapt quickly to her home. BRING TOKITAE BACK!!!!

The hypocrisy of these "trainers" and veterinarian who have traumatized this whale for decades now claiming that many experts are doing this for "human benefit". Their selfishness comes through with every word but I guess they have to rationalize what they've done to this poor captive for so many years. The reality is that it's already been done and not just with "Keiko" (who btw, lasted longer than he would have if he had remained in captivity). The ugliness of suggesting that this poor creature hasn't yet suffered enough that she should be sentenced to remaining in a shallow concrete tub, with chlorinated water, getting sunburned, continuing to develop severe tooth and health issues from gnawing the cement pool from frustration and boredom. How very kind and thoughtful of them.

I think its bad for her to be let go, shes been in Captivity way too long to know how to hunt for herself,. Let alone even know what other animals are to be afraid of them. I think this is gonna end up killing the wale in the long run. I feel for bad over this

She isn’t being out in the wild to fend for herself. It’s a sea pen with 24/7 care. They aren’t just dropping her to be on her own.

Unfortunately most of the news coverage about Toki is really misleading and this video in particular leaves out many of the crucial facts about her planned journey. As it is, Toki is not actually being "released" into the wild, she is merely being returned to her native waters to live out the rest of her life in a huge special made sea pen that will properly accommodate her and will be as close to supplementing her natural habitat as possible. She will still be protected and all of her needs will still be provided for, including feeding and routine veterinary care, she just won't be on display, forced to perform or be exploited for profit anymore. She will be allowed to live the remainder of her life as close to free and naturally as possible and be near to her native pod. It's actually the best case scenario for a whale like Toki, and will be a vast improvement over her current enclosure (let alone moving her to another theme park to be exploited further as her former "trainers" want).

Totally agree Lolitra and Corky releasing them is signing them a death sentence in their late 50's. The riskd mare too great!!! Kierko only lived in the wild for a year and was a teenager. Corky is the matriarch of sd sea world and at almost 60 still [performing., Why does mno one talk about condityions of elephants and hippos in spaces no bigger than a house confined

Keiko lived 5 years in the ocean, 1.5 on his own. he died from pneumonia which was not his fault. And corky shouldn't be preforming she should be retired to a sea pen aswell. they're not going to the wild, lolita is going to a sea sanctuary with 24/7 human care. please do research! and what do u mean! all the elephants from the ringing bros was moved to large 100 acre sanctuaries

Keiko was released in 2002 and died in 2003 ahole. U do research I don’t consider a pen being released.
If corky is healthy and happy why shouldn’t she perform? Are u a vet? Releasing them even to a pen I’m the ocean exposes them to a world with viruses they have not built any immunity to. It also forces them especially at ah old age fight for food and Keiko would never have gotten sick if he wasn’t exposed u kniw nothing u Bloviating douche bag.
Everyone at San Diego sea world talks about how healthy corky is and is the training wehale for new hires because how calm she is, III have followed corky since I first saw her perform with Orky.
U people like to lie and say how killer whales don’t live as long as wild counterparts when the fact is they only started captive programs in the 60s. All most all wild animals live longer captive because of the medical attention steady diet and managed health programs . Corky and Lolita Vancouver pic is almost gone because of human encroachment and lack of food and pollution!!! Is that factored into these dangerous decisions with older animals. U should do research Jack.

Do people adopt huskies malamutes shepherds allow for exercise in the open or are most confined to tiny corners in apartments and small homes? Mistreatment of animals is everywhere. How often u go to zoos and see elephants who can’t even walk around?? Hypocrite

@@charfras4767 last time i checked Huskies or Malamutes are not considered wild animals. I haven't been to a zoo in over 20 years. Orcas are ripped from their families and used for profit in horrible conditions. You sound stupid Karen 🤦‍♀️
