I used to enjoy seeing them at these shows, but I was small and didn't know what I do now. I hate that these poor, beautiful and wondrous creatures are locked up like this; it's inhumane and cruel. If people want to see animals do tricks so much, watch them in their natural habitat; or better yet, have studios create animltronics that look exactly like real animals and use them instead. That goes for zoos and circuses too.

l totally agree with you, and have been saying the same thing for many years. ln fact, there's no reason why places like SeaWorld and Miami Seaquarium can't stay open and continue their Rescue/Rehab/Release programs and still turn a profit without the orcas, dolphins, sea lions..etc. They could charge tuition and train people to become certified in R/R/R. They could get their patrons involved in the care and rehabilitation of their rescued animals, such as manatees .sea lions and sea turtles. SeaWorld still makes very good money from all their other rides and attractions.
Animatronics and Imax technology have come so far that you could sit in a theater and feel like you're kayaking or diving with a pod of wild orcas or dolphins. Most kids today are into that kind of stuff anyway. Lots of anti-captivity folks would love nothing more than to see all the SeaWorld parks bulldozed to the ground but I and many other anti-cap activist/advocates agree that they can still remain open and be a very valuable asset to conservation and "real education" and still be a fun place to visit. Monterey Bay in California has life sized replicas and they do great business.

I think it’s too late to give her back. She can no longer catch live fish or swim long distances like her relatives. The best option now is to send her to a sea pen where she can still be in open water and live out the rest of her life happily.

This animal is so old, moving her now would be incredibly cruel and stupid. She hates change in her environment so much that she'll often perform her show on her own if they change show times. She also seems to be in great physical condition despite the tiny tank and lack of fellow orcas. I agree her tank is really small, but ripping her away from her home and 'family' (the dolphins and trainers she's incredibly close with) now is only to boast the ARA's own agenda and not doing any good for this animal.

@@justbecause2914 I’m sure you remember what happened to Willy aka Keiko everyone saw the film Free Willy and found out he wasn’t really free.. People were out raged and demanded he went back to Iceland where they captured him when he was two years old. Mind you He’s been with his trainers, Hollywood in motion pictures, he has been training for people for 25 years & he LOVED his fans. They had to raise $20 million to get him out of Mexico they had to build him a brand new tank in Oregon which was beautiful by the way I think he should have lived out his last year’s in Oregon.. Instead it took four or five years to get him healthy and ready for “the wild” You know how stressful it is to get an 8000 pound orca from the United States to ICELAND 😳 it cost soooo much money - finally Keiko was freed. He Immediately traveled 900 miles to Norway he was swimming up to boats Frantically looking for a human companionship, he was also showing up to people that had a oceanfront backyard and he would never leave. We didn’t ask HIM if this is what he wanted? The ocean is a scary place! He cried for his owners, his home he Eventually died four months later after being freed, he died of pneumonia and loneliness, starvation. If Lolita is freed The same thing will happen to her because she’s triple his age, I’m sure she loves her owners and trainers. Where she lives is unacceptable, people have swimming pools bigger than where she lives. Miami Seaquarium makes big bucks all year around instead of trying to free her they need to find better resources of getting her in a bigger tank. She also need shade from the Miami sun, I live in Miami and I’m gonna visit Lollita on Thursday. But People need to calm down about this whole freeing the orcas, its like kicking A five-year-old out the house and say get it together, you’ll figure it out!

I agree she could not survive the move at her age. Honestly I feel it be nice for her to join Kiska but that’s not an option as well as having her moved to sea world be like putting my grandma in a young persons concert. Same with Lolita she doesn’t like change. Miami seaquarium owns Lolita as if Miami seaquarium were to decide to move Lolita it be where they decide like an adoption center decides who to have their cared for child to in state or out of state. These people are on a non realistic mission. The southern resident killer whales are in poverty and having a sea pen should be for their use as for Lolita they attack her to her death same to an orphan child going back to a town of poverty. When in the state of poverty they don’t think right and kill for survival. Moving Lolita would make no sense at all whether she lives or dies is no change on her life or the southern resident killer whales.

Same with this so called plan as if the park that owns the whale wanted her to be moved it be where they decide not what the people with this plan want to do doesn’t work that way. When she learn the vital survival skills she needs she'll be released into the wild with the skills she should've learned decades ago.
Just throwing her back into the ocean is selfish and unnecessary. She's been through enough and us putting her in a dangerous situation because of science is horrendous and unthinkable. The fact you would even be onboard with her suffering more than she already has is just stupid.

There is information on that. They figured that out with Keiko, who had been in captivity for a way shorter time (17 years vs 50 years for Lolita), they spent 6 years trying to rehabilitate him, they released him and he was dead after a year because he couldn't readapt to the wild. @@zenithkillera1966 The problem with Keiko's story is that some perceive his release as succesful and other don't. So there is a lot of conflicting information on it. (Keiko is the orca from the Free Willy movie btw)
He was doing pretty okay in the seapen, but his caretakers (some of his former trainers and cetacean experts/researchers I believe) said he couldn't be released after they worked on rehabilitating him for a few years, but the activists who funded the project wanted to release him. They fired the experts and trainers and took up rehabilitating him themselves. They tried to introduce him to wild orca pods in the area (they trained him to swim after a boat so they could lead him to them), but he would never try to interact with them or the other way around.
Eventually he did swim away (although I also heard stories that they lead him miles off-shore and quickly turned around and left him, not sure how true that is), he was lost for 3 months (tracker fell off). He eventually turned up in Norway after following a boat back to shore (same as they taught him in Iceland). They examined him and he hadn't eaten in those 3 months, clearly a sign that he was not capable of hunting on his own. They decided to just go back to feeding him dead fish again in Norway and let him live out his days there. He eventually died about a year later from pneumonia.
Many claim his release was succesful, but I really don't see how they can call it that after 6 years of rehabilitation efforts, him getting lost for 3 months alone in the ocean without eating anything, and then going back to the old routine because the rehad efforts clearly didn't work.
They will also often point to Springer's story when talking about reintroducing orcas back into the wild. Springer was found alone and emaciated 250 miles from her family. They had her in captivity for only one month for medical treatment, during which human contact was limited to the bare minimum. She was succesfully reintroduced to her pod. Of course this can't be compared to Keiko's or Lolita's situation where they have been in captivity for decades and formed very close bonds with people.
We do know who Lolita's family is, but she's a Southern Resident orca, who are facing really harsh conditions in the wild rightnow. There are only about 70 left in the wild and their numbers keep going down due to overfishing of the Chinook salmon, which is their main diet. They also have a lot of trouble reproducing with calves dying just hours after birth or later dying of starvation.
(Okay, this comment turned out waaaaay longer than I expected)

Sending this animal to a sanctuary is not the answer she needs to be sent to a better facility where she could have a lot more room and be with other killer whales

@@horse24draws9 exactly. People dont realize that Orca do NOT communicate with other Orca Pods in the wild. Southern Resident Orcas like Lolita stay with their family their entire lives. The bare minimum she needs to be relocated to Sea Pin the Puget Sound. Ideally, she gets the strength to meet up with her family when it is all said and done. honey, the located her family. they know by the sounds she make and the location she was taken from. actually they know precisely who her mother is, and that yes she still alive. im sorry but i think your childhood memories are way better than hers, so i think its time now we return the favor and retire her in a sea pen. where she can volutarily try to reconnect with her pod as they speak the same language when she's ready. and if she's not ready, she will be looked after by humans still
